DAVIS COUNTY 4-H HORSE AND LIVESTOCK ARE REACHING OUT TO PROMOTE PROGRAMS By Cindi Mansell | The City Journals
T
he best and easiest way to support 4-H Youth in their pursuit of becoming successful producers and equestrians is to talk about the great things they are doing. Complete with its own motto “To make the best better,” 4-H is America’s largest youth development program organization, with over 6 million kids and 500,000 volunteers or units. It is a non-profit, focusing on education and empowering youth to succeed. Jenna Aldrich has been running the 4-H program for Horse & Livestock in Davis County for two years but has been doing 4-H for close to 30 (she “was raised doing 4-H”). She said the group and its “ambassadors” have been presenting to Davis County cities in the hopes of raising awareness that these programs are growing and strong. “Just because they have lost the Davis County Fair does not mean they have lost 4-H in Davis County,” she said. They have had the highest numbers this year in over five years, with over 110 participants and enrolled volunteers in Horse and 80 participants in
Livestock (involving approximately 200 families). “4-H is the community involvement part,” said Addison Black, one of the Horse Ambassadors that has been serving in this role for four years. She said the Horse Program involves the primary care of a horse: riding, financing, practicing, grooming, training and showing. It teaches hard work, determination, confidence, growth and team support. The group holds Education Nights for community members (for people who own horses and those who don’t). They are more than a horse show, offering demonstrations, public speaking, requiring written tests, writing cover letters and resumes, learning about jobs in the horse industry, and focusing on community service and volunteer work. They provide pony rides and work Baby Animal Days with their own horses and livestock, offering incredible opportunities for the community and fundraise to support their programs.
