2021 FIREFIGHTER OF THE YEAR – CHRISTOPHER MONTGOMERY

A

t the February 17 Kaysville City Council meeting, Fire Chief Paul Erickson presented the “2021 Firefighter of the Year Award” to Christopher Montgomery. He explained this award is presented each year and recipients of the award are nominated by their peers (city employees serve as great judges). He said there were so many good firefighters working for Kaysville.

Firefighter Montgomery was hired full time at the Kaysville Fire Department in December 2020. He previously worked part time for the city and also worked for Roy City. He had been a paramedic for a few years and then took the initiative to get Kaysville’s paramedic program started without even being asked. He has oversight of the training and documentation program, has taken the initiative to pass out information and documentation, oversees the drug program, and other program facets that need to be managed. As a result, in 2022 the paramedic program is going strong and working well for the department and citizens.

Utahns are asked to take a high-speed internet test

W

hen it comes to state broadband access, Utah ranks 29th on the list of best-connected states. While that’s not terrible, it also demonstrates room for improvement.

Based on low-price internet plans, wired broadband coverage and friendliness to broadband competition, the ranking reflects a digital gap for Utah residents. The Utah Broadband Center is addressing that gap and conducting a statewide internet speed test to collect data.

Residents can access the 60-second test at speedtest.utah.gov which will identify areas in Utah with low or no access to highspeed internet. Data collected will guide decision-making when allocating resources toward internet projects in the state.

In a message to residents, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said, “A high-speed broadband internet connection has become an integral part of our lives. It’s more than just having access to the internet, it’s about connecting to work, education, healthcare, entertainment, or with family and friends. That’s why I encourage all Utahns to take the state’s new internet speed test.”

Currently, the average download speed in Salt Lake City is 151.4mbps with an average speed of 163.7mbps statewide. San Juan

and Daggett Counties have the most limited access with internet speeds rarely above 25mbps.

“Access to reliable and affordable internet connectivity has become increasingly important in our daily lives, and without it, individuals lack access to critical digital resources, such as distance learning, telework, and telemedicine,” said Ryan Starks, managing director of business services a the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity.

The Utah Broadband Center collaborated with GeoPartners, a geospatial engineering firm, to create a map used to identify levels of high-speed broadband. All residents are encouraged to self-report their speed at the testing website.

Those without any internet access are asked to call 1-435-777-TEST (8378) to report why they don’t have access to the internet. The Utah Internet Speed Test, available in both English and Spanish, is secure and information remains anonymous. People taking the test will be asked their location and monthly internet cost.

“The pandemic has heightened the awareness and need for robust internet ser-

vice statewide,” Starks said. “We encourage all Utahns to take just one minute to participate in the Internet Speed Test.” l

Montgomery said he is “not one for speeches.” He said he was lucky enough to have great support at home and his upbringing was top-of-the-line. His parents

He said the program was a lot of work but wasn’t without a lot of help and he thanked Chief Erickson for empowering him to take the reigns and get moving.

others who have helped and whom he has bounced ideas off, and the award should have everyone’s name on it because they all worked as a team and played a part.

Sarah’s story: Helping others with epilepsy live their best lives

F

or Sarah Hawkes, it happened the first time without her realizing it.

She was 15, sitting in her room painting, and waiting for the 9 p.m. family tradition of gathering to read scriptures. But 9 p.m. came and, as she recalled, “that time passed with no one saying anything, so I continued to paint. Eventually, I looked up from my work and the clock read 10:30.”

So she groaned, set down her brush, and went downstairs where her dad sat casually reading on the couch.

“From the staircase, I complained like the teenage girl I was, ‘Ugh, can we just read already so I can go to bed?’ My dad raised his eyebrow at me and told me, ‘We already did.’ Again, like a teenage girl, I folded my arms and huffed. ‘What? Why didn’t you tell me?’ That was when he gave me his full attention, staring at me, and said, ‘Sarah… you were there.’”

She had just had an epileptic seizure.

That was 11 years ago. Now Sarah, 26, works as an education coordinator for a company in Washington, D.C. She has graduated from universities with two degrees, including an LLM in Peace Operations, Humanitarian Law, and Conflict from the National University of Ireland at Galway; played competitive rugby at BYU, and lived with a neurological disorder that affects nearly 3.5 million people in the United States, including 470,000 children, according to the CDC. It has led Sarah, who attended both her sophomore and junior years at Viewmont High School and graduated from the Waterford School, to create a blog called “AuraYou-There?” on the Spaces app (spaces.do).

“I’m passionate about discussing this topic,” she said from her home in Arlington, Virginia. “I’ve lost two jobs because of my seizures due to time I had to take off, and I’ve found the best way for me to speak to this is through my writing.”

She recently wrote a blog on Spaces called “Blink.” It’s a wonderful article discussing what it’s like to experience this nightmare, particularly if it happens in public.

“There is such a negative connotation to epilepsy,” she said. “We don’t want to ‘advertise’ it, or talk about it openly. When it happens around others, we ask ‘did they notice it – do they think we’re stupid now?’

It is so stressful beyond just the physical exhaustion and toll that it takes.”

By definition, epilepsy is marked by sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance, loss of consciousness, or convulsions, associated with abnormal electrical activity in the brain. As Sarah wrote in “Blink,” seizures are distinguished into two types.

“First are the convulsive (grand mal) seizures. The second kind are called

non-convulsive (absent) seizures. Absent seizures are infinitely harder to explain because they can’t be seen.” She has had both.

There are no definitive triggers for the seizures, though lack of sleep, stress and either not enough or too much sugar in a person’s diet could be a contributing factor. Whatever the cause, for family or friends, witnessing a seizure for the first time is very traumatic.

“It's a very scary experience for a parent to watch your child go through that and not know how to help,” said Sarah’s mother, Sharlene Wells. “I learned quickly how to catch her (if I was lucky enough to be around when it happened), hold her head, lay her on her side, and wait for the seizure to stop. It's like a full ‘reboot.’ For the last 10-plus years, she has bravely tried to live life to its fullest despite the ever-present fear of not knowing when another seizure will happen.”

Sarah’s seizures don’t follow regular patterns in terms of severity or regularity.

She does have a calendar to track them.

Some of the grand mals are a bit more severe now when they occur. They can leave her confused, as she wrote in “Blink.”

“Imagine that you blinked and when you checked your phone, two hours have passed,” she wrote. “You go to the bathroom to get ready for bed, but when you look in the mirror with a toothbrush hanging out of your mouth, a trickle of blood is trailing from your ear. You brush it off as meaning nothing, but in the morning bruises have blossomed on your hips and knees. A person who’s never had a seizure would panic.

I usually groan and say, ‘Dammit.’”

Sarah does not have a driver’s license, instead maneuvering around the challenges of the nation’s capital on public transportation.

But she hasn’t let it stop her from pursuing her dreams, like those two years of rugby at BYU (“she explained to me that her epilepsy was not the same as a concussion, so therefore she could play,” Sharlene remembers her daughter telling her), or earning that Masters degree in Ireland.

“I used to worry about freaking out strangers if I have a seizure,” she said. “But I have faith in my fellow man – that someone will be there to help me, like happened once when I was in Chicago. You have to be ready to adapt when you have epilepsy.

I live by myself right now because I prefer to be alone, even though I know it’s a big

stresser for my Mom. I’ve studied what to do in the case of a seizure and share that with friends so they have an awareness of how to help.”

Through her blog, she wants to raise awareness of “something that is not as uncommon as you may think. One in 26 people will have some sort of seizure in their lifetime – and it may not be epilepsy. I want people to share their stories, to learn how to adjust their schedules if necessary, to do a better job of finding things they are limited to in a realistic, responsible way, but still enjoy proactive, good fulfilling lives. Sharing with one another can help do that.”

“Blink” is very well worth reading.

Sarah pours her heart and soul into her words, knowing the challenges that those with epilepsy face, but never losing sight of the blessings she, and all of us, enjoy in life.

“The brain is beautiful,” she writes. “It turns electricity and tissue into thoughts and personality; it connects with every part of our body in a fascinating puzzle; it learns and adapts like no other organ has the capacity to; it stores decades of memories and stories and emotions. Emotions like fear.

“But that beauty, with its complexity, comes at the cost of fragility. The same electricity that creates thought can malfunction and send the entire body to the floor in convulsions and spasms. Those malfunctions can damage those memories held safe in the brain. Temporary or permanent, the damage is there. Those malfunctions happen in a fraction of a second – in the blink of an eye.

“Now, blink.

An Easter message: Hope

I

f there is anything our world needs today it is hope. After two years of fear brought on by the pandemic followed immediately by the possibility of Nuclear War dangling on the horizon, we can find ourselves worn out and in need of a break. We need hope. We need something to look forward to instead of nothing but the prospect of chaos and danger in our future that has been constantly lingering in the media zeitgeist of our era.

Easter is hope. It offers the opportunity to focus on the good and the possibilities of change that we all yearn for in our world. In its basics it uplifts us to hope that this world of tragedy and chaos is not all there is, in the Resurrection of Christ we have hope of not only life after death but a new and glorious beginning. A new body and a world free of prejudice, hate, war and violence is the promise that God gave us in the Resurrection of Christ. Even if you don’t believe it is an inspiring dream we all hope for. A world without hate or the boundaries we all put between ourselves. A world instead built on love, compassion and peace, where we love our neighbor as ourselves in word, deed and intent. We all long for such things, especially in the world we find ourselves in.

Easter is transformative. Easter is the

culmination of Christ’s ministry.

He told His disciples over and over that He must sacrifice Himself and rise from the dead. They didn’t really get it until it happened. They thought Christ would be King instead of the Suffering Servant. But Christ’s ministry focused on the needs of others, it focused on love not glory.

Christ let Himself face death to show us that death is not the end but rather a transformation. It is no mistake that Easter is a spring holiday after which the desolate landscape of winter is transformed by new life, growth and splendor. It is a divine metaphor for the possibility of change that is empowered by the possibility of Easter and all its implications.

Easter is transformative and can bring hope. If that is true, how can you get a bit of this hope and transformative power yourself during this season?

By love, compassion and acceptance of others.

That is the main message of Christ that culminated in the transforming Resurrection.

Love.

Easter is God’s gift of love to you. God wants to inspire you to follow Christ’s law of love and transform the world around you. To give the world hope. For if we truly care for one another, that generates hope.

This Easter, try to be more compassionate. Don’t let your opinion of others be generated by someone else, or some group you are involved with. Let your opinion of others be covered in the same grace God gives you and let us together transform the world with love and hope. Amen.l

ebruary 28, 2022 was a very special night in Kaysville Kaysville proudly stands with other cities and the State of Utah with Ukraine. Thanks to Mayor Tami Tran, the City Council, Public Works Director Josh Belnap, and Public Works Maintenance Employee Zach O’Brien, they were able to light the Kaysville Star the night of February 28, to stand in solidarity with Ukraine.

Mayor Tran and the City Council had asked if it would be possible to turn on the star to show support, and Belnap and O’Brien were the ones who hiked the hill to cover the bulbs in blue cellophane.

On March 3, the Kaysville City Council unanimously adopted a proclamation to stand in solidarity with Ukraine and the people fighting for their freedom, including the people of the United States Armed Forces. On February 23, the Russian military began a brutal assault on the people of Ukraine without provocation, justification, or necessity. This invasion was premeditated and planned by the Russian Federation, namely its President Vladimir Putin, for months. Individuals serving in the United States Armed Forces, at Hill Air Force Base, and locations around the world, could be affected significantly by this invasion; and lasting peace and prosperity require respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries and respect for human rights.

The Council commended the courage, resolve, and restraint shown by the Ukrainian people in their pursuit of sovereignty and democracy and paid tribute to the many men and women who gave their lives in pursuit of a free and democratic Ukraine. The Council stated that it stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and Ukraine's fight to

defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the freedom of its citizens.

Council members urged the United States federal government and its allies to take substantive action to punish the Russian Federation for its evil actions and restore peace in Europe. l

Book Nook – Tsalix Silverthorn works to fulfill the promise he made to King Elosha

ollowers of Tsalix Silverthorn and his fellow villagers Asur and Kwercus in author Richard Siddoway’s four-book series won’t be surprised by the new challenges facing these three young men. Their goal, their desire and their mission is to recover the Specter of Destiny so that freedom and righteous leadership can continue in their kingdom.

As the final book in this series begins, the death of the beloved King Elosha has expedited the need for our heroes to fulfill a promise made to the king – to use the talismans they’ve successful retrieved in the previous three books in recovering the Specter before Elosha’s evil son Abadon takes possession of it. Tsalix Silverthorn and the Glittering Peak is a fitting conclusion to that challenge.

If you haven’t read the first three novels in the series, this fourth is the story of a courageous young man (Tsalix) leading a dangerous quest to restore peace and order in the tiny village of Aravah in the Kingdom of Sodizen.

King Elosha’s twin sons, Princes Abadon and Johona, are engaged in a battle to take over the throne. As you might guess, one of the sons (Abadon) has evil intentions of becoming dictatorial, while Johona is much more loving and peaceful. King Elosha had summoned Tsalix and his friends to retrieve three talismans from their hidden places, and then the Specter, to prevent Abadon from taking power.

Abadon has alerted his troops to capture the men and thus the Specter, but he needs the knowledge of Tsalix and his friends in order to find the hidden Specter from

its resting place in the mountain, and then to use it.

Siddoway is of course a New York Times bestselling author whose first published novel, The Christmas Wish, was made into a TV movie starring the late Debbie Reynolds along with Neil Patrick Harris and Naomi Watts.

It is shown almost annually on CBS. Siddoway said it took him about a year to complete each of the four books in this series.

In a previous interview, Siddoway said that, “Every book I have written has the underlying theme of good over evil. In Tsalix Silverthorn, I hope readers will get a sense of the uplifting undertones within the larger concept of the story.”

The journey is formidable for these young men, who exercise extreme faith, and overcome a number of obstacles, as they summon within themselves the strength necessary to fight against opposition.

The new community event celebrating the heritage of Davis County is intended to create a new venue to fill the gap left by the departure of the Davis County Fair. The festival, hosted by the USU Botanical Center, will be a family-friendly event held annually in the spring in conjunction with Baby Animal Days.

The inaugural Davis Heritage Festival is planned for Thursday, May 19, through Saturday, May 21. The 4-H horse and livestock show will continue as a separate event during its usual summer timeframe and will be held on Thursday, August 18, through Saturday, August 20, this year.

“The purpose of this change is to focus on agriculture, give community members and local businesses a chance to share their creative endeavors through locally made or grown projects, and to celebrate the heritage of Davis County,” said Randy Elliott, Davis County commissioner.

“In addition, it will honor the past, promote the strong future ahead, and more accurately reflect what has built the Davis County community.”

Jerry Goodspeed, Utah State University Extension professor and director of the USU Botanical Center, said he is excited to be part of the new community event.

“There is symmetry between USU Botanical Center’s mission and Davis County’s efforts in promoting and supporting agriculture and local heritage,” he said. “We look forward to sharing this wonderful new event with the community. Our new Davis Heritage Festival committee has wonderful local talent, demonstrations, an adventure zone, entertainment, and of course baby animals ready for the event.

Annual 4-H events are still moving forward in 2022 with the county fair horse show on Saturday, August 13 at the Hooper City Arena at 8 a.m. and the stock show held August 18 - 20 at the Golden Spike Arena in Ogden.

Davis County residents monitor Ukrainian war with anxiety and fear

A

s the Ukrainian war went on into April and the fighting and bloodshed and destruction of their native country continued, many residents from Davis County who were from the nation or had visited it recently remain deeply affected.

Three different events sponsored by the Utah Ukrainian Association drew residents of Davis County to the state Capitol, and a benefit concert held at the Cathedral of the Madeleine on March 21 was another bonding event for the community. (see separate story in this issue).

Yulia Holko is a former resident of Bountiful now living in Salt Lake City. She is a director with the association. “‘As you know, Ukrainians are fighting for their land,” she said. “They’re fighting for the values of democracy, freedom, and to be free of terror. Putin is a dangerous man, and he will not stop at Ukraine. If the world doesn’t stop him now, he will be at the doorstep of Europe tomorrow.”

Holko, who has lived in the U.S. for more than 20 years after coming to study journalism at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, said her family members back home are terrified, because there’s so much uncertainty.

“They don’t know exactly what to do – it kind of changes by the hour. Some of them are thinking of going to Poland, but it’s very hard and some roads are blocked and the gas shortage is very serious. Some of them are picking up guns and fighting, or helping in any way they can.”

And she said her friends who are journalists in Ukraine are obviously standing their ground to get the word out about what is occurring.

Oksana Andriishyn lives in Centerville with her mother Inia and a daughter.

She moved to the U.S. 12-½ years ago, first living in Arizona and then Chicago before coming to Utah. But her father, a sister and niece, and her two grandmothers still live in Ukraine. One of her grandmothers who has been hiding in a bomb shelter with other family members survived the German-Soviet war in 1941.

“She still remembers how they had to run for their lives, and experiences the same fears again these days,” Andriishyn said.

She credits the resilience of the Ukrainian people to the fact that “we’ve had war for the past eight years. It’s never stopped. They just continue shooting in the east. I guess Ukrainians just got tired of being bullied.”

Another couple from Bountiful staying in touch with the events in Ukraine are Ryan and Anastasia Patin. They were visiting her family in Ukraine the day Russian tanks began rolling into the country. Her parents helped them flee the country by driving them

toward the Polish border, but roads were blocked and the couple had to walk three miles and get a ride for the final nine miles of their escape. They left their belongings behind in her parents’ car.

“When we left Utah for Ukraine on Feb. 13, everything seemed fine,” Anastasia said.

“We were hearing the rumors about what Russia was doing with their military along the borders, but I don’t think anyone really believed it – not until that Saturday (Feb. 26) when we woke up and found out the airport had been bombed. We heard the sirens and we knew we needed to run and escape quickly just to save our lives.”

Anastasia lived in Zhytomyr, where she taught English in a school before moving to Utah. She learned after they returned to Utah that the school had been destroyed by a Russian missile. Fortunately, there were no students in the school – just a couple of adults who were not injured. The fate of her family remains a constant worry.

Bountiful resident Abby Salmon became part of the Utah-based International Language Program as a volunteer several years ago, and was offered the chance to teach English in a number of countries.

She chose to go to Ukraine in part because “I didn’t know much of anything about the country’s culture, and I wanted to learn more.”

“I lived in Kyiv with a host family, something I wanted to do rather than just live with fellow American volunteers, and it was a great way to learn the culture,” she said.

daughter, and later talked to a bishop in an LDS ward and he found a family that wanted a volunteer. So I spent four months with the Lysenko family, who are also Latter-day Saints, and it was awesome.”

She said the Lysenkos are still living in their home, not venturing out much, and feeling safe inside.

“I don’t think anyone thought it would actually become an invasion, which obviously it has,” she said.

What hits Abby particularly hard is that she remembers the Russian annexation of

Crimea and the war in the Donbas region in 2014. Since then, the past eight years have seen war and conflict within the Ukrainian nation. And she’s not surprised by the resilience and the resistance of the Ukrainian community.

“I remember how tough these people are, how they always find the toughness they need,” she said. “I hope it leads to their success. I knew they were going to fight if attacked, and they’ve been fighting.” l

avis High head coach Lori Salvo keeps trying to retire from coaching the Darts program, but she is back for her 10th season to keep her girls atop Region 1 and “make a run for it.” “It’s hard to think about someone else coming in here and caring about these girls like I do,” she said.

Seniors Hannah Karras, Bridgette Volk, Cheyenne Hansen, Quinn Shupe and Halle Johnston are back on the course for Davis and they will be joined by basketball player Grace Arrington who is giving the sport a try.

“The girls are excited to come back,” Salvo said. “A lot of them have put some real time in to getting better.”

Salvo also noted the additions and potential of freshmen Liv Davenport and Lizzie Rhodes to her 14-member squad.

Also on the DHS team this season are juniors Abby Lewis, Sophie Seeley and Emma Smith; sophomore Chloe Cook; and freshmen Haley Merrill and Tressa Zaugg.

Cyd Fox will again assist Salvo on the coaching staff this season.

The 6A state tournament will be at Stonebridge May 9-10.

“We need at least three of our players to shoot in the 70s consistently to be up there, and we’re really close,” Salvo said. “It’s really all about the kids competing and having fun.” l

Tips and tricks to ‘hijack’ the nervous system and calm the brain

here are plenty of things to be stressed about. A worldwide pandemic, a war in Ukraine, civic unrest and simply everyday life. Lanai Greenhalgh, LCSW, director of Center for Health and Counseling at Salt Lake Community College ,has a few quick tricks to help relieve stress.

“I’m always looking for creative ways to help people with stress and recognize when they’re in flight or fight mode,” she said. “Our bodies don’t know the difference between an actual threat or if it’s in the mind.

We start breathing fast when we’re anxious and stressed. So we need to work to calm our body.”

Greenhalgh recommends an exercise to tell the brain it is safe enough to see the periphery of the environment. “Put your hands up at about ear level on both sides of your head,” she said. “Close your eyes then open them back up. Can you see your hands on the sides of your head? This helps to soften our gaze and signals to the body that we don’t have to hyper focus on something. If you start to notice that your focus is sharpening on something else in the room, close your eyes again. Open your eyes and see your hands and what is in your peripheral vision. Do this as many times as you need to until you can keep your gaze on your hands.

Eventually, when you teach your eyes how to focus this way, you’ll be able to do this without holding up your hands.”

Next, breathe in and out slowly, she said. “Usually we focus on the in breath that makes us anxious but we should be focusing on the out breath. It’s a signal to the body to relax.”

Another technique Greenhalgh said she finds super easy is pinching each finger together. “Put the thumb and pinkie together then move through pinching each finger one

at a time. It grounds you and signals to the body to relax. Do it over and over. It’s very relaxing. If you do it quickly it can give you a burst of energy.”

These methods have been shown to bypass the brain and go right to the body and relax it, she said. “It helps you to think more clearly and reason better by tapping into the nervous system to get rid of that flight or fight response. It puts you into a calm, safe, state. Do whatever works for you. We’re all wired differently.” l

Nani Pierson’s work with special education students is recognized at a Kaysville elementary

hen Nani Pierson received the Most Valuable Educator Award, presented by Instructure and the Utah Jazz, she was humbled and honored. She was also aware that hundreds of other Utah teachers would have been just as deserving.

“I have worked with so many good people,” she said. “I know I really care about the award but there are other people who deserve recognition. But then a colleague sent me an email and said she loves it when people are recognized because it’s shared and felt by others.”

Pierson has taught special education classes for 19 years, seven of those in her current position at Windridge Elementary in Kaysville.

She is one of 21 teachers recognized this year as a Most Valuable Educator.

Her work with special education students has been especially poignant the last few years as COVID-19 put a lot of pressure on teachers and students have felt that same stress and anxiety.

“The world has a lot going on and children feel that and they don’t often have things explained to them. I find time to be present and here for them,” Pierson said. “I noticed

how students really worked hard, even when they struggle, and how much more progress they make when someone takes an interest in them.”

Windridge Elementary Principal Casey Pickett was not surprised Pierson was recognized for her good work. She credits Pierson’s growth mindset and her willingness to learn as a secret for her success, and said the award was the perfect pick-me-up for the school.

“The kids thought it was the greatest thing ever,” Pickett said. “[Nani] is just a beautiful person in our building. If you’re around her, you realize what a great human she is.”

The Utah Jazz Most Valuable Educator, presented by Instructure, asks for communities to nominate educators who make an impact in their schools and who inspire students. Each award recipient is a guest of Instructure at a Jazz game, and receives a personalized Jazz jersey and a $1,000 classroom grant, along with a surprise in-class visit from the Jazz Bear mascot.

Living on the Edge: Homes on the hillsides of Davis County

I

f you’ve ever dreamed of sitting in your living room or on a back porch enjoying unobstructed vistas and panoramic views, far away from society, you’re not alone.

Cliff homes – homes built on mountainsides near naturally-made drop offs – date back centuries and were once built for security and protection from enemies.

They are as popular today as ever, especially in Davis County along the Wasatch Front. Back in 2003, the county’s Council of Governments created a comprehensive hillside master plan in anticipation of future growth and development along the east bench.

However, when reality sets in for those who want to build or have a home built on the top of a cliff, the design and construction considerations that involve engineering and architecture can be daunting, and very expensive.

Four main elements to remember when planning such a structure – topography, the combination of logistics, zoning and permits; solid ground, and protection from the elements. Communities along the hillsides in Davis County take all of those into consideration when permission is sought to build these homes for those

who like living on the edge.

“There are a lot of geotechnical sign offs involved,” said Linda Horrocks, communication coordinator for the City of North Salt Lake, a community with lots of homes on tops of hillsides. “Those involve soils, grades of the streets, and many geographic elements that our city planning and engineering departments monitor regularly. Emergency responders such as police and fire departments must have easy access to an area being developed, and many other aspects are taken into consideration as plans are formulated.”

The first steps involve a city’s planning department and a planning commission, if a city has one. Usually a developer approaches a city with plans to subdivide an area and presents the plan to the city’s building department. Geotech firms from both the developer’s side and the city then check the site for a series of evaluations.

If those reports agree, the developer then begins a concept plan with an engineer.

That leads to review of the concept by the planning commission, the city council, and often with a public hearing. This same process is used no matter where a development is being considered–hillside or not.

Then, the process heads to the next phase.

“There’s a geologic hazard investigation done by the GT firms, staff, engineers – a contingent of different checks,” said Sherrie Pace, community development director for North Salt Lake. “This is the longest part of the process. Each analysis is reviewed and comments shared, and it can take anywhere from one to two years.

If you have soils with any hazardous content, if they aren’t solid and could move or shift, if there is a high level of clay and if the soil isn’t considered stable or strong enough – all of those factors go into the mix.”

She said groundwater tables are part of the yearly monitoring of sites, as well as seismic concerns specific to the geotech of a particular lot. All those reports are used once a homebuilder submits an application for a building permit. Criteria as laid out in the International Building Code Chapter 18 as it pertains to soils and foundations must be adhered to.

“It’s an onerous process, but we have to be certain we do all we can to protect all involved,” she said.

It takes lots of time and money just to

start the process of building the home. Is it worth it? We reached out to a few homeowners in the south part of Davis County for comments, but only one wanted to speak to it, and without using their full name.

“For us, this was our dream home, the last one we’d ever build before we will eventually downsize and retire,” said Ron G., who lives in Bountiful. “We were fortunate to find a lot that allowed us to build the home we wanted. We have solitude, an amazing view, and it’s like a glimpse of the world for us – where we live, shop and play.”

Any fears of living on a hillside and near the Wasatch Fault that runs beneath the east bench?

“Not really,” he said. “You look out over these views, feel like you’re flying or suspended in air, and worries just kind of slip away.”

As long as that’s all that slips away – which is the reason cities, developers and builders work so hard to make sure the homes themselves do not. l

Kaysville wins the UAMPS ‘Smart Innovation Award’

O

ver 100 years ago, Kaysville city leaders had the foresight to form a municipal power department. The power companies at the time were not able to supply reliable and consistent power to the community. They would only serve certain portions and did not seem interested in supplying electricity to everyone.

Since Kaysville does not have any power generation facilities, it joined a co-op call UAMPS (Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems) which builds and runs power generation projects shared by all member communities. This co-op has grown from just serving Utah communities to now serving local power departments in California, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico and Wyoming. Kaysville enjoys some of the lowest power rates in the intermountain area through UAMPS. In fact, power rates have not been raised in many years.

Kaysville’s Power Department has a qualified and dedicated team of professionals who work every day to make sure that our power is available 24 hours a day. They have been investing about $2 million per year in improving the electric power system. Last year, a reliability study was conducted to find added improvements needed to keep the power system and it supplied

As a confirmation of the excellence of the power department, Kaysville Power has been recognized as a top 25% most reliable municipal utilities in the USA by the American Public Power Association. They also received the Smart Energy Innovation Award from UAMPS. They have consistently been recognized by the Intermountain Power Superintendents Associations for low accident frequency (receiving 1st place honors).

The Smart Innovation Award recognizes member utilities for undertaking system upgrades, capital improvements and preventative maintenance measures to modernize facilities, improve system reliability, reduce losses, reduce outage times or improve power quality. Kaysville City Power & Light has made improvements in their system and have completed other projects on top of all the building and normal upgrades to the system. They completed an entire Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meter change out of 10,000 meters, all done in-house. The AMI meters improve outage response and staff receives an email

the second the power goes off to each meter.

The new meters also check power quality to notify staff if there is a connection problem.

Kaysville often responds before they even get a call from their customers.

They also changed out 1,097 street lights from High Pressure Sodium (HPS) to energy-efficient LED lighting, using less than one third of the electricity than before.

Kaysville Power and Light also received a grant from Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) and installed nine dual outlet electric vehicle charging stations around

Kaysville City. These charging stations are free to the public at this time.

The Kaysville Power Commission (made up of Kaysville residents) handles recommending how to set and manage the rate structure to ensure that Kaysville’s power department is run effectively, efficiently and has the resources needed to continue to invest in our Power Delivery System. This year, Kaysville City Power is being run by new Superintendent Brian Johnson.l

Please have items bundled together, boxed or bagged. All items must be loadable by hand without the use of heavy equipment. Limbs and branches need to be cut in lengths of 5 feet or less and MUST be tied together in tight bundles not to exceed 50 lbs. Tree limbs not tied in bundles will be rejected. Loose items such as leaves, weeds, grass and shrub trimmings need to be placed in bags or disposable containers.

All refuse must weigh less than 50 lbs.

Construction material, wood, sheetrock, concrete, sod, soil, rocks, highly volatile material, asbestos, hazardous waste, refrigerators, and lead products are not accepted.

Comcast invests in Tech-Moms, a program that encourages women to move into tech

C

omcast Corporation is investing in women. The global media and technology company is the Title Sponsor for the Tech-Moms technical training program where Comcast will provide $42,000 in cash and support in 2022, in addition to providing $15,000 in support last year.

Tech-Moms is a nonprofit organization that helps women move into, or return to, technology careers. Students in the program are given opportunities to build skills and knowledge to transition to a profitable tech position.

“I just started my second week of training with a tech company in Springville, [Utah],” said Tech-Moms graduate, Janice Knudsen. “It pays more and has benefits that my old job did not. There are many opportunities for advancement since this company hires first from within.”

More than 200 women have gone through the TechMom program, which partners with five higher-ed institutions, and 80 women are currently participating in the program. Additionally, 300+ applications are waiting for a spot to open.

Students are introduced to a variety of technical careers and given a strong support network as they move forward. As the women transition into the tech industry, they discover hidden abilities that help them build confidence in this ever-growing field.

“After graduating from Tech-Moms, I have had the confidence to apply for new jobs,” said Rosa Griffin.

“Next week, I am going back to college, and I applied for a new job that I dared to apply for, even when I didn’t

meet the college requirement. Two days later they offered me the job. The only condition was that I would go back to school and start working towards my degree. My salary has had a great increase too! I am so grateful for the opportunity I had to be part of Tech-Moms.”

“The value of the contributions Utah women make is incredible,” said Deneiva Knight, Director of External Affairs at Comcast. “That's one reason we are partnering with Tech-Moms. We want to help provide women the opportunity to build the skills, knowledge, and professional network they need to transition into or re-enter a career in tech.”

Ukrainians living in Utah raise funds for humanitarian shipments to their home country

W

hen the Russian army invaded Ukraine at the end of February, the Utah Ukrainian Association was inundated with calls from people wanting to help. Within a few days, the association, in partnership with its sister organization in Idaho, had a plane full of supplies heading to Europe.

Utah Ukrainian Association board member Yulia Holko was born in Ukraine and moved to the United States in 2001. Ten years ago, she relocated to Utah where she lives in Salt Lake County.

“Thankfully, my immediate family is here but I have lots of extended family in Western Ukraine,” Holko said. “Even when they’re not being bombed, there are lots of air raid sirens going off and planes flying overhead, because it’s psychological warfare, too. It’s very hard to process. Members of our community have been under shock and stress.”

The Utah Ukrainian Association, and the 1,500 Ukrainians living in Utah, jumped at the chance to help their fellow countrymen and homeland. Members have organized rallies at the Utah State Capitol and are asking people to sign a petition to bring Ukrainian refugees to Utah.

Currently, it will take up to three years to get refugees resettled in the United States.

The group wants to speed up the process as millions of Ukrainians have been displaced.

“People leave their home and leave everything behind,” Holko said. “Often, the only clothes they have is what they’re wearing.”

The association is accepting donations for the next shipment. Non-perishable foods, sleeping bags and solar power banks to charge phones are top items, along with clothes for warmer weather like T-shirts, light jackets, jeans and shoes.

“The support has been amazing. People have been turning out and speaking out,” she said. “It feels like anything we need, there’s a local business willing to donate funds. We were just a small organization before the war and we had to scale up really quickly.”

A benefit concert held at the Cathedral of the Madeleine in late March brought the community together for prayer, music and solidarity for the Ukrainian people. “Voices for Ukraine” featured artists from the Utah Symphony, Utah Opera, University of Utah, Ballet West Academy and The Madeleine Choir School. Ukrainian musicians and multicultural vocalist Alex Boye also added their talents to the event.

Although the concert was free, the standing room only event raised more than $25,000 from donations and sales to provide life-saving supplies for Ukrainian refugees, and those still trapped in Ukrainian cities.

Kateryna Hansen, a Utah Ukrainian resident, spoke at the “Voices of Ukraine” benefit. She detailed harrowing accounts of friends and family members, escaping into Poland or hiding in bomb shelters and basements.

“In less than one month, the country I know has been turned upside down,” Hansen said. “Children are dying. The dead have

been left in the street for days until they can be buried in mass graves.”

Hansen asked benefit attendees to reach out to senators and congressmen, asking for more military and air defense support as the war rages in Ukraine.

The Utah Ukrainian Association will continue to send shipments to eastern Europe. The plane filled with donations flies

from Idaho to Germany, then trucks carry the items to Poland and then to Ukraine. Information about donation drop-off locations can be found at UtahUkrainians.org.

Z.T. Bright hopes to become a new name in fantasy writing

A

vid sci-fi and fantasy readers are familiar with Utah authors Orson Scott Card, Brandon Sanderson and David Farland, but what about Z.T. Bright?

Bright, a North Salt Lake resident, is a winner in the Writers of the Future Contest.

His short story “The Magic Book of Accidental City Destruction: A Book Wizard’s Guide” earned him a spot in the bestselling anthology “L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 38” which will be released on April 12.

“What’s fun about this contest is some of the biggest names in the industry are involved as judges or instructors,” Bright said.

“I have to learn to balance the feeling of success but continue to move forward. It’s not the end goal but hopefully a step toward more. This is a whole new world for me.”

Along with a cash prize, and the opportunity to attend the black-tie awards gala in Hollywood, Bright will attend a weeklong writing workshop led by top professionals in

the industry.

Bright started submitting short stories to the Writers of the Future Contest seven years ago. His winning story is based on the concept of a magic book, the Book of Truths.

“It’s about characters navigating a fantasy world in which a magic book can provide people answers to any questions they have, but with no guarantee of its accuracy,” Bright said. “Reality is subjective. Things we read on the internet are very different based on the sources they come from.”

John Goodwin is president of Galaxy Press, publisher of the fiction works of L. Ron Hubbard. He said judges of the contest included best-selling authors Card and Sanderson, and Farland was a coordinating judge before his unexpected death in January.

Judges look for originality and creativity in submitted stories and must be engaging enough to keep a reader’s interest.

“Bright's story was a very clever tale that he claims was inspired by the explo-

sive growth of the internet and its impact on people,” Goodwin said. “I found it to be a fascinating and very interesting read, almost allegorical in its parallel to the effect social media has on people.”

The contest is one of the most prestigious writing competitions in the world.

It’s become a vehicle for new creative talent to enter the world of contemporary fiction.

More than 450 past winners of the contest have published 1,150 novels and nearly 4,500 short stories. Contest winners have also produced 32 New York Times best-selling books, selling more than 60 million copies.

Bright, who has four children and a job as a financial planner, hopes writing can become his full-time job.

“Storytelling is foundational from the start of humanity,” Bright said. “That’s how we lived. That’s how we learned and taught our young. It’s something that’s in our blood.” l

Female golfers will mix business and fun at the Copper Rock Championships in April

F

ormer Utah Senator Pat Jones understands not all business discussions happen in the office. Often, valuable deals are made on a golf course. When she realized many women aren’t usually involved in golf tournaments, she understood how often they are left out of important business decisions.

As the CEO of the Women’s Leadership Insititute, Jones organized a women’s golf clinic and tournament where they could build relationships, learn the basics of game and golf etiquette, participate in a scramble, and put themselves in a better position for inclusion.

“What I’ve learned, and I knew it intuitively, is that golf is the language of business,” Jones said. “That’s just how business has worked for so many years. It’s important for women to learn a sport that can help further their careers.”

The program was so successful that the WLI entered into an exclusive three-year charity partnership with the LPGA Epson Tour at the Copper Rock Golf Course near Hurricane, Utah.

The event is a week-long immersion for female leaders in Utah with the opportunity to play with top golfers and network with other professionals.

This year’s Copper Rock Championship event will run from April 18-23 and feature 220 pro female golfers. Last year’s event was a success, although Jones admitted she was a little intimidated playing with pro golfers. She even took a few lessons.

“I felt I had to play in the Pro-Am,” she said. “Since I was encouraging women, I felt I had to walk the talk. I can’t wait to go again this year. The pro golfers were so generous with their time and advice.”

The event starts on Monday, with the WLI Pro-Am, fol-

lowed by a Meet the Pros Night on Tuesday. Wednesday is the ElevateHER Challenge Luncheon with keynote speaker Sharlene Wells Hawkes. The luncheon will be a time to recognize companies that have accepted the ElevateHER Challenge.

Thursday through Saturday is the Copper Rock Championships where the women can cheer on their Pro-Am teammates as they vie for the title.

“ElevateHER is a corporate challenge with six actions companies can take based on best practices that will elevate women in business,” Jones said.

The program’s goal is to increase the number of women in leadership positions and the retention rate of female workers.

Companies are asked to increase the number of women who serve on community and corporate boards, establish a women’s leadership development program, close wage gaps, and encourage women to run for public office.

WLI started in 2015 to elevate female leaders in Utah.

With the WLI Career Development Series, companies can sponsor female leaders, investing in their future.

“It’s been hugely popular,” Jones said. “Companies who have accepted the challenge can send female leaders, mid to senior level. When women go back and teach their teams, it helps them be seen as the leader they are. It’s really magical.”

WLI also offers a Political Development Series that coaches women who want to run for office. The program started seven years ago and more than 300 women have completed the course. Several women currently serving as mayors in Utah went through the program.

Along with their leadership, second-year head coach Makenzie Hekking said returning juniors Ruby Jane Hollingsworth and Emma Williams and sophomores Kaydence Johnson, Tallulah Raser, Gracie Rose, Olivia Lifferth, Jacey Compton and Mackenzie Coleman will also be expected to be key contributors on the field for the fifth-ranked squad.

“We have a lot of new players this year as well,” said Hekking. “I have high hopes for them, but time will tell to see how much they contribute to the success of the team.”

Hekking noted junior Megan Gardner and freshmen Esther Facer, Lily Mickalson and Sydney Plummer as newcomers to watch for this season.

Many of the Darts players competed for club teams over the off-season and the emphasis within the program has also been on strength training and conditioning with the hopes to build up endurance and prevent injuries.

“I want to build on what we accomplished last year, and get even farther this year in the postseason and to hopefully compete for a state championship,” Hekking said.

“I’d also love to see some of my sophomores and juniors start to get recruited.”

Also on the DHS team that hopes to defend its region title are seniors Natalie Chavez and Kaylee Fiscus; sophomores Kennedy Barker, Ellie Henderson, Brooklyn McKenzie, Kerri Norton and Brinlee Wilding; and freshman Alexa Bergeson.

Hekking will be assisted by John Bunch on the coaching staff.

Supporting Small Businesses is Good for the Economy

I

recently visited Weller Book Works in Salt Lake City.

The 93-year-old independent bookstore is among the treasured small businesses in Utah that give our neighborhoods their distinctive flavor and create a feeling of community.

Small businesses like Weller Book Works not only have an important place in our hearts, but they also play a vital role in our economy. In Utah, 99% of companies are considered small businesses and they employ 45% of state’s workforce.

Nationally, small businesses have accounted for two-thirds of net new job creation since 2000, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. They also keep money close to home. If you spend $100 at a local small business, roughly $67 stays in your community.

Small businesses have been a key driver of Utah’s economic rebound from the pandemic, though they still face enormous challenges. With inflation now at a 40-year high, one in four small business owners report that inflation is their biggest concern, according

to the March NFIB Small Business Optimism Index. Much of this inflation is caused by struggles in the supply chain, and 92% of small businesses say they have been impacted by supply chain disruptions. Small businesses also continue to grapple with labor shortages.

Almost half of business owners could not fill job openings, the NFIB survey found.

Given these pressures, it’s not surprising that 63% of Utahns have an unfavorable outlook on business conditions nationally over the next 12 months, as measured by the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute’s Utah Consumer Sentiment Survey. The survey found less pessimism toward business conditions in the Beehive State, where only 36% of Utahns have an unfavorable outlook.

There may be some relief ahead for small businesses. The Federal Reserve is taking aggressive action to control price increases. The Fed hiked the key short-term interest by a quarter point in March, marking its first rate increase in more than three years. Up to six additional rate hikes are expected this year, which could cause interest rates to increase by as much as two percent. Their hope is to deflate some of the bubbles that have formed because the overheating economy.

Another positive sign for small businesses is Utah’s strong job market. All of Utah’s

10 major private-sector industry groups posted year-over-year job gains, according to Utah’s Department of Workforce Services.

Utah’s annual total employment has increased by 4.2 %, adding 66,000 jobs over the past year.

However, the Russian war with Ukraine is adding more uncertainty to the economy, just as it is turning the corner on the COVID pandemic. The war has pushed already high oil prices to new multi-year highs. The war is also disrupting the supply of wheat, which

will pressure food prices, and nickel, which is an essential ingredient in stainless steel and a component in lithium-iron batteries. This will add yet another element of uncertainty to the small business recovery.

In the meantime, the best way to help ensure the survival of our favorite neighborhood small businesses is to support them as much as possible.

Lacrosse for Dummies

tah high schools welcomed boys and girls lacrosse to their sanctioned sports last spring season, and Davis County schools did fairly well in year one.

In boys, Viewmont moved to the Div. C championship before losing 15-5 in the finals. Woods Cross, and Davis lost in quarterfinal rounds and Bountiful lost to Westlake 11-6 in the Div. B semifinals.

The Woods Cross girls made it to the finals in Div. C, losing 20-13 in the championship match.

Farmington and Viewmont made it to quarterfinals before losing at state. Davis and Bountiful lost earlier matches.

This year, the divisions are combined, so the new year of this traditional East Coast sport will have a different playoff format. That said, here are some tips about the sport, which has plenty of differences between the boys and girls games so let’s look first at this individually.

Things you need to know about boys lacrosse • There are 10 players on each side of the field – 3 Attackers, 3 Midfielders, 3 Defenders and 1 Goalie.

• Among its midfielders, teams can use a Faceoff Specialist, who may come right to the sidelines after faceoffs, and a Long Stick Midfielder, who plays with a longer stick.

• Faceoffs, where one player from each team crouches down and fights for control of the ball, start all quarters and also happen after each goal is scored.

• Lacrosse sticks are allowed to be deeper for the boys than the girls and the string can be mesh or traditional leather.

• During play, the attackers need to stay on the offensive side of the field while the defenders stay on the defensive side.

The midfielders can be mobile all over the field.

• Players can body-check another player that has the ball with referees allowing body contact from the shoulders down to the waist. Boys are required to wear full protective gear, including helmets, shoulder pads, elbow pads, rib pads, gloves and mouth guards.

• Fields measure 110 yards long by 60 yards wide – that is marked with a midfield line, two restraining boxes and two creases around the goal.

• High school games are four 12-minute stopped time quarters.

Approximately 5,500 boys play lacrosse in Utah with 2,000 of those of high school age.

Things you need to know about girls lacrosse • There are 12 players on each side of the field – 3 Attackers, 5 Midfielders, 3 Defenders and 1 Goalie.

• Games are started with a draw where centers from each team stand facing each other with the ball being placed between the heads of both players’ sticks. At the whistle, both players try and push or pull the ball high enough in the air that it clears the shoulders of both players. After a “fair” start, they can either get the ball from the air or the ground. The other midfielders are waiting outside the center circle until the draw is clear or a penalty is assessed and possession is given to the other team.

Draws are used after each goal as well as at the beginning of the second half.

• Lacrosse sticks have a traditional pocket and the material of that pocket can be different.

• During play, no more than seven players can be below the restraining line on their offensive side of the field. On the defensive side, eight are allowed including the goalkeeper.

• The top of the ball must be above the sidewall when it’s in the pocket.

• No body-to-body or stick-to-body contact is allowed. An immediate yellow card is assessed if a player’s stick hits another player above the shoulders and a two-minute non-replaceable penalty is given (like the hockey penalty box). Two yellow cards equal a red card and players are subject to automatic removal from the game. Players are only allowed to make contact with their stick when the ball carrier is holding their stick below their shoulder. Girls are required to wear a mouthguard and goggles.

• Goalies remain in the goal circle, or defensive area. The four defenders are in their restraining area and typically use a square or diamond setup while the four attackers do the same in their restraining area. The three midfielders are the only players that can be in the center section of the field for the draw with the center midfielder designated to take the draw.

• Typically, players use a tight cradle motion between the ear and the shoulder when possessing the ball.

• Fields measure 120 yards long by 70 yards wide and contain a midfield line, two creases, an arc at eight meters and an arc at 12 meters.

• High school games are two 25-minute halves.

Also, Utah now has its own U17 national team where previously they had been combined with Idaho and Montana and with that increased presence, more All-American players are being recognized from the state and moving on to play collegiately.

goal, possession is awarded to the team that is closest to the ball when and where it exits the field of play. So the offense can take multiple shots in a possession that miss the goal, and still retain possession.

• An off-sides penalty is assessed when too many field players are over the restraining line. The maximum is seven.

• Only goalies are allowed in the crease or goal circle unless the goalie is not in that area. In that case, a field player can run through to pick up the ball, but no defense can be made against shots on goal since they are not wearing the appropriate gear.

• A rule of “shooting space” protects players to ensure safe play. When players are on the attack and typically around the goal area, defenders must come in from an angle – not head on – to align their bodies to defend safely. “Shooting space” penalties result in an 8-meter shot (think penalty kicks in soccer). The “dangerous propel” rule puts the responsibility on an attack player to refrain from shooting if a defender comes at them head on until the official makes the “shooting space” call.

Otherwise, the penalties offset.

• Yellow and red cards typically are handed out for safety and sportsmanship violations and other penalties result in

change of possessions or penalty shots, depending on where on the field the fouls occurred.

• Whether it’s boys or girls lacrosse, the most basic movement on the field is a cradle which keeps the ball securely in a player’s net. The use of an effective cradle leads to the best possible scenarios for a shot attempt or a pass.

• When the ball is scooped off of the ground, it’s called a ground ball. In a battle for that ball, players cannot hit the other’s stick if they don’t have possession of the ball. That is called an empty check and is basically a turnover, handing possession to the other team.

• Defensemen use “d-pole” long sticks which are six feet long and designed for players to try and check and dislodge the ball from attackers from a distance.

Teams are only allowed to use up to four long poles on the field at one time while the other six players have a standard lacrosse stick that is required to be between 40-42” in length. These sticks allow for easier movement and protection.

• Goalies wear full protective gear and have sticks with a much larger head than the field sticks. l

A

ppliances are like Christmas lights.

When one goes out, they all go out.

We’ve spent the last couple of years replacing appliances, and not easy things like toasters or the electric carving knife. We’re talking a dishwasher, a dryer, a refrigerator, and now our washing machine.

I hated to tell my husband the bad news, not because of the expense but because I had to brace myself for the laundry puns. He has loads of them. But I threw in the towel and waited for his list to unfold.

“Well, sheet,” he started. “I spilled laundry soap and now my hands are Tide. I’d better come clean ‘cause I’m in a lot of hot water. I’m all washed up. Oh, the irony!”

Once that was done, I had to decide the best way to clean our clothes until the new washer was delivered. Options were 1) go to a laundromat, 2) drive to Utah Lake where I could wash my clothes against a rock until developers make Utah Fantasy Island, or 3) say, “Alexa, do the laundry.”

The laundromat won. It’s been years since I’ve visited a laundromat. I bought a chai tea latte to sip, packed a book to read whilst waiting for clothes to dry, and a notebook to write pithy thoughts.

My first impression of the laundromat was the warmth from the dryers and the smell of fabric softener was so cozy. This will be joyous, I thought. Maybe I’ve found

my new community. Things went downhill quickly.

While inserting 19 quarters (!!) into the machine, I shoved clothes into the washer and noticed my tea had spilled all over the laundry basket. I grabbed my tea, closed the washer door, and sliced my finger open, leaving bloody fingerprints on the handle.

Trying not to think about what types of bacteria live on the handle of a laundromat washing machine, I considered leaving the blood there so the next person would wonder if a serial killer had washed his T-shirts. But I used a damp, tea-soaked towel to wipe it up and looked for a place to sit.

Making my way to a row of stiff, plastic chairs, I sat down to enjoy the lukewarm remains of my tea. I opened my book and looked around the room where people sat staring at cell phones. No one made eye contact.
