CRESTVIEW’S CARLY DONAHUE IS GRANITE’S TEACHER OF THE YEAR

F

riday the 13th turned out to be lucky for Physical Education Specialist Carly Donahue – it’s the day she was named GSD’s Teacher of the Year. Donahue splits her teaching time between Fox Hills Elementary in Taylorsville and Crestview Elementary in Holladay.

“District representatives, members of Donahue’s family and the Fox Hills student body were all in attendance when Donahue was surprised with the announcement at Fox Hills,” said Ben Horsley, director of communications at Granite School District.

“Donahue was chosen for her unwavering commitment to helping students live healthy lifestyles and progress academically,” Horsley said.

Donahue is originally from Montana and came to Utah during college to run track and cross country for the University of Utah.

“While at the U, I found my passion for promoting physical fitness and overall health,” Donahue said.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in 2012 and a master’s degree in 2018. She was awarded the Excel Teaching Award in 2020.

The day of the announcement, Donahue was led into the Fox Hills auditorium where staff, loved ones and cheering students were all wait-

ing for her.

Assistant Principal Kathy Hommes greeted Donahue and directed her attention to a big poster on the wall with Donahue’s picture and the words “Teacher of the Year 2022” above it.

GSD Superintendent Richard Nye gave Donahue her award.

“One of the biggest honors that we could ever give is this [award] right here. This is Teacher of the Year.

“So out of the 4,000 teachers that we have [in Granite School District], Ms. Donahue is going to have the opportunity – and we’re so proud of her – to represent the Granite School District at the state level,” Nye said.

Donahue’s principal from Crestview came out to Fox Hills to watch her be recognized. She spoke to the students about Donahue’s winning qualities, including how much she cares.

Holladay brothers return to math competition in D.C. as student and coach

L

iam Reddy of Holladay recently returned from Washington, D.C., where he represented Utah in the 2022 Raytheon Technologies MATHCOUNTS National Competition. Liam took a good coach with him—his older brother Kiran, a three-time finalist on the team.

“I don’t know when my interest in math started, but it was early. My main motivator was the competitions I did at school, which my brother suggested I compete in. Now I do it less for the competition and more for the problem solving,” Liam said.

Liam, who is in seventh grade at the Waterford School in Sandy, was one of four students representing Utah at the competition May 7-9. The competition is open to sixth- through eighth-graders. It starts at the school level and ends with a four-person team from each state.

“We have a middle school math club run by our teacher Hiram Gotza where we prepare for the competition during the year.

Mr. Gotza gives us practice problems and helpful things to learn.

“He has a lot of handouts he’s made with certain techniques to use on problems.

Once you learn enough of them, you can start applying them to the MATHCOUNTS problems,” Liam said.

Liam’s older brother Kiran is the one who suggested that Liam join the math club and get involved in contests. Kiran is in ninth grade, and has aged out of this particular competition. But he set a good example for Liam to follow.

“In 2019 when Kiran was in sixth grade he competed in the Raytheon Technologies MATHCOUNTS Competition and qualified for nationals. The next year was the pandemic.

“He took state that year in seventh grade, but nationals were canceled. Last year

everything was online, and Kiran qualified for nationals again,” Liam said.

In 2021, the only year when both Kiran and Liam could compete together, they both qualified for nationals and took two of the four places on the Utah team. Liam won third place overall in 2021.

This year the event was held in person, so the whole Reddy family went to D.C. for the weekend-long competition. Liam went as a competitor, his brother Kiran as the team’s coach, and their parents Drs. Vivek and Cara Reddy as supportive cheerleaders.

“This has been a fun experience for us as parents. The reality is we don’t push hard on this. The boys found it and have good connections at Waterford that have helped them get into the competition space.

“Sometimes we just sit back at the dinner table and marvel at their abilities,” said their dad, Vivek Reddy.

The national competition starts with a written portion which is closed to families.

Eligible students advance to the countdown round, which is similar to a spelling bee, where problems are read aloud and contestants must be the first to answer verbally.

This is open to the public.

Liam advanced to the countdown round again this year, and finished in the top 12 of 244 competitors.

Back home in Utah, Liam and Kiran had one more math hurdle to clear: the Advanced Placement calculus test.

“We took AP calculus this year. It was mostly 10th- and 12th-graders in the class.

I finished the course material during the first term. Since then I’ve done independent study,” Liam said.

Liam had to get special permission from AP testing officials to take the test. AP tests give students college credit and are usually taken in high school.

The AP test is given nationally on the same date, which was May 9 this year. Since Liam and Kiran were at the competition in D.C. that day, they took the make-up test May 20.

Liam has many other interests. At school he also takes band, Latin and computer classes and runs cross country.

Creative problem solving, collaboration made emergency management exercises a success

alt Lake County Emergency Management (SLCo EM) directed a Joint Information Center (JIC) functional exercise on May 12. The exercise brought together 23 Public Information Officers (PIO) from various agencies across Salt Lake Valley.

The players came from Herriman City, Midvale City, Murray City, Taylorsville City, Bluffdale City, Holladay City, Millcreek City and West Jordan City. From Salt Lake County, the players came from several Salt Lake County departments, including Arts and Culture, Health, Mayor’s office, Public Works Operations, Aging and Adult Services, District Attorney’s office, Sheriff, Parks and Recreation and Regional Development. Salt Lake City Fire Department also played. From the private sector, Rocky Mountain Power played.

Twenty-five exercise helpers assisted with the exercise. From the state, there were employees from the Division of Emergency Management, Department of Health and Human Services, Utah Transit Authority and Department of Environmental Quality. In addition, numerous members of the Salt Lake County Emergency management participated. From the private sector, representatives from Fox 13 News, KUTV 2 News, and the City Journals participated in the news conference part of the exercise.

“As part of the exercise, the PIOs will have to conduct a press conference with actual representatives such as fire chiefs, police chiefs, etc.,” Tina Brown, PIO SLCo EM, said. “The exercise is designed to mimic a real-life scenario the PIOs will have to work through, including answering media calls and releasing public information. I thought this could be a great opportunity for a story since many of the participants signed up are the PIOs for many of the local municipalities and agencies in Salt Lake County.”

Exercise Chet Ellis, SLCo Deputy Emergency Manager/Operations Section chief, lead the effort from design to execution to Mop Up. Ellis is completing the Master Exercise Practitioner Program from Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA). After two years of onsite and online training, this exercise was his capstone project.

Ellis and Brown were the exercise controls.

“The main reason we do these exercises is to test the system,” Ellis told the group.

Scenario The exercise scenario centered around an active shooter and an explosion at the theaters in The District. The exercise was played in real-time plus 12 hours. In other

words, while the exercise started at 9 a.m., the scenario began at 9 p.m.

Before the exercise began, the timeline was that a 911 call was received at 8:30 p.m. of shots fired at the theaters. At 8:35, SLCo EM started to monitor the situation. An explosion is reported at 8:38.

At 8:40, SLCo EM staff and support staff received an AlertSense message. The message told them to report to the SLCo EM Center. This is the same way in real life.

AlertSense messages are used to ramp up the SLCo EM Center.

At 8:45, social media erupted with messages asking for facts and voicing concerns for loved ones. Local TV started live coverage at 8:48. By 8:55, the Emergency Support Function (ESF) had arrived and received their initial briefing.

Clint Mecham, SLCo director of emergency management, told the group about the 2020 Magna earthquake. In the Operations Center, there was 185 ESF staff working on issues like evacuating Magna because of a HazMat leak at Kennecott.

Play At 9, the exercise started.

All PIOs choose an Incident Commander/Lead PIO. They selected West Jordan Officer Sam Winkler. He quickly organized the others into groups according to their expertise and experience.

A call center was staffed to take calls.

Social media was monitored to knock down rumors and supply valid information. The media was managed as they sought information in many ways.

An area called the “SimCell” was a separate room. In the SimCell, volunteers made phone calls to the call center seeking information about loved ones at the theater. Others made media calls. In addition, SimCell would provide scenario information or throw the JIC a curveball.

“One issue we found is our call center numbers don’t roll,” Ellis said. “We need to get this fixed.”

Instead of calling one published number and rolling to a free person, SimCell people had to try a variety of numbers to get through.

“The exercise is going really well,” Brown said. “Some tech issues, but this is why we test.”

The scenario ended with a press conference at midnight. Again, members of the JIC had to prepare talking points and brief press conference presenters.

“They did a great job. They prepped the speakers,” Chief Justin Hoyal, Unified Police Department, said during the Mop Up session. “They wanted to make sure we are all on the same page.”

“Everyone took their roles seriously, and they stayed within their role,” Officer Winkler said. “They all worked together.”

Cottonwood FCCLA students to compete at nationals, five place at state

T

wo Cottonwood High Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America club members will be competing for national titles in June after they, and three of their teammates, brought home state medals.

Seniors Georgia Barrus and Lily Lundeen will be representing their school June 29 through July 3 in San Diego in the leadership STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) competitive event. Barrus took gold at state and Lundeen, silver.

“We’re both pretty excited to go to nationals together,” Barrus said.

In fashion construction, Mariana Labrador, Sara Sandusky and Annalyse Staker earned silver medals at state. They each sewed different outfits, created presentations that outlined their concepts and process they learned and were able to wear them at the state competition.

FCCLA is a club associated with family consumer sciences and helps youth expand their leadership potential and develop skills for life, such as planning, goal-setting, decision-making and interpersonal communication.

As part of the club, Cottonwood’s 25 FCCLA members have focused on service and often have teamed up with other clubs to do projects, such as the school’s version of Festival of Trees, trunk-or-treat and a thankyou letter campaign to teachers, said Zahaia Cuevas, the club’s first-year adviser and second-year family and consumer sciences teacher.

“We do a lot of community and schoolwide service projects,” she said. “We’re teaching students they can make a positive impact in the community, even if it’s by doing something small like writing a thank-you.”

Since November, FCCLA students could begin preparing for competition.

In the leadership category, Barrus and Lundeen were able to talk about their leadership experience they’ve gained through their high school years, show how they set goals and worked to meet them, give examples of leaders they admire, and complete a self-inventory of their leadership skills and provide it to other leaders to evaluate them.

Lundeen, a Girl Scout, used that as a base of her presentation, Barrus said.

“She was able to really talk about all her Girl Scout leadership experience into her presentation,” Barrus said.

Lundeen, who oversees her chapter’s social media, also brought in communication, social media and time management goals into her event, Cuevas said.

Barrus shared about her five years of experience in mountain biking, including being captain this year; her presidency in both FCCLA and in Cottonwood’s National Honors Society presidency; her internship at a nearby elementary school; and her part-time jobs.

“The judges gave me notes to reflect on and what to improve so I looked at those.

Honestly, I didn’t really think it would go far and because I wasn’t sure if my presentation was good,” she said. “But I really am passionate about it and so I just thought I’m going to see what I can do since I really care about it.”

One piece of advice Barrus said was that she referred to her slides too much since the judges already had read through her presentation beforehand.

“They just wanted to hear my thoughts on it. So that’s what I did for state. I talked what I was involved in and the more I shared, the more I got into it. I talked about how I’m a leader. I talked about mountain biking and how I wasn’t first in every race, but I love it because it encourages me to try my best at every practice and race. I shared with them how I would always try to make sure we’re being inclusive and welcoming with FCCLA and NHS meetings. I talked about how communication is a great part of being a leader and how I used it with my part-time jobs how I work with the public. I talked about my internship and about wanting to be an educator is helping me become a leader in the classroom,” Barrus said.

When she got flashed a one-minute warning in her 10-minute state presentation, Barrus realized she was only half-way through her presentation.

“I jumped to my summary and just talked about how and why leadership affected my life. I just talked about all my achievements and how it has helped make me a great leader.

I quoted John Wooden, ‘Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be’ —and honestly, that’s the main point. I showed how a leader blossoms. I talked about as a freshman, I was experimenting and trying to figure out what I liked in school, and now as a senior, I’m in full bloom like a flower and have just grown in so many ways,” she said.

As a freshman, Barrus joined FCCLA after learning about it from a teacher.

“I decided it was the best thing ever. I competed my sophomore year in event management and earned gold at region, but then, state got canceled for COVID in 2020,” she said, adding that Cottonwood didn’t compete last year.

After competing at state March 22-23 this year, Barrus was called to stage as the first-place finisher.

“They called ‘Georgia Barrus, gold,’ and I was like, ‘what?’ I was shocked, I was shaking. I was like ‘this is the coolest thing in my life,’” she said.

Now she is preparing for another cool thing—nationals.

my passion and not really referring to every point on my slides. I just want to rework what I say and how I present it,” Barrus said.

Her adviser, who herself placed second nationally in FCCLA when she was a high school student, will help her students prepare.

“I was able to look through their rubrics and look at the judges’ notes and I will go over those with Georgia and Lily before nationals,” she said, adding that in addition to the competition, they will attend leadership workshops and be able to network with professionals and students from across the country. “FCCLA really gives students opportunities to serve school and community and helps them grow as a leader and an individual in areas that they’re passionate.”

Cuevas, who estimates there are 300 students who enroll in Cottonwood’s family and consumer science classes, wants to encourage more students to get involved.

“Some students in my classes are real-

ly good and talented and passionate about sewing, fashion, cooking, children education so I want to encourage them to join FCCLA because we provide opportunities for them to grow,” she said. “I am so proud of my students who competed this year. They all worked really hard. My sewing students, it was their first real articles of clothing they made. They all did lining, buttonholes, collars—and things that are tricky. I think they all learned a lot throughout the while process, and they learned some great skills they’re applying to other projects. I’m proud of Georgia and Lily and the great leaders they are. They have been great FCCLA officers this year and they’re good example to the rest of the club and school. I’m excited for the things they’re going to do after high school; I really think they’re going to some really good things in the world.” l

Fox Hills student turns food waste into biodegradable plastic

C

rystal Mirci, a fifth grade Fox Hills Elementary student, recently won the University of Utah Science and Engineering Fair for the state of Utah by making biodegradable plastics from food waste. She received the highest points possible and also received the TD Williamson Outstanding Young Scientist Award.

The University of Utah Science & Engineering Fair is an annual science & engineering competition for students in grades 5-12. Students from the Canyons, Granite, Murray, Park City, Salt Lake, South Summit and Tooele School Districts as well as the Salt Lake Catholic Diocese and all private, home school and charter schools within these boundaries participate in the competition.

Crystal’s father, Curtis Mirci, said that Crystal decided to make biodegradable plastics from food waste when she noticed in the news stories about animals dying from plastic exposure and the microplastics that are in people’s bodies. “She saw that students at school often threw away leftover food and plastic after lunch, and that gave her the idea as well,” he said.

Crystal used five different types of fruit as well as vegetables, soy milk, regular milk and egg shells and a recipe from the internet to create the biodegradable plastics. She explained that she dehydrated the food, ground the dehydrated product into powder, then heated it and put it into molds to dry. She said that all of the food in the project was expired, and she changed the recipes to improve the results. Crystal was also able to extract protein from dairy products by mixing it with vinegar to make additional biodegradable plastics.

“I was curious if it would actually work or not, but it worked great. She even got the soy-based biodegradable plastics to get as strong as the regular plastic,” her father added.

Due to COVID restrictions parents were not allowed at the March 9 event, but the students were able to present their own projects to the judges. Crystal’s awards were delivered to the school in April. She received a plaque for the TD Williamson award and a trophy for the points award. “I was very impressed with her and proud of her. With all the work she put into the unique concept, I thought she would win something,” her father added.

“I would like to do more science fairs in the future,” Crystal said. She explained that she would like to test the durability of other bio- based plastics to build on this year’s project for an additional science fair project.

“I was really happy. I didn’t think I would actually win against so many kids. I was really proud of my work,” she said.

Crystal skipped kindergarten so she is a year ahead in school, and after taking math assessments for sixth grade, she was placed in ninth grade math for next year. She composes music, is bilingual in English and Japanese, and even has her own piano YouTube channel.

In a video of the surprise announcement that is available on YouTube, Donahue shared some of the ideas and teaching philosophies that have helped her succeed.

“Whenever students walk into the room we always try to get active right away. I know that I am their first experience with physical activity, with P.E.,” Donahue said.

Donahue believes the attitudes kids develop in elementary school towards physical activity can continue throughout their lives, so she’s determined to make sure they are positive. She wants to give students a foundation for fitness that will continue throughout their lives.

“We do games, and we do drills and skills. When they get to junior high they know how to do different things so they can find what they’re good at, or something they like that they will continue to use,” Donahue said. l

Potential pocket park deemed more burdensome than beneficial officials say

lected officials passed on a chance to purchase and maintain a park along Murray Holladay Road at 2394 East during a study meeting in May. Officials felt the public benefit did not outweigh the burden on the city to maintain the park.

The property in question, which has a white bungalow near the road and is 1.7 acres in size, was approved for a six-lot single family residential subdivision in January. The Hulton Park subdivision includes open space planned as a park for the development. However the applicant, Ron Hilton, proposed to city officials they purchase the park section of the property to develop and maintain as they see fit.

The park portion of the development would be a third of an acre dedicated for public use rather than solely for owners in the subdivision.

Community Development Director Jonathan Teerlink noted it might be “the first time” they’ve had a developer propose such a use for the public as well.

In a letter addressed to the city from Hilton on May 2, he wrote the park would be close to Holladay Village in the center of the city, “enhancing the multi-use walkable environment there with the many new townhomes and condos that are going in, as well as serving all other pedestrians who visit and patronize the

Holladay Village.”

The conditions laid out in the letter include passing ownership of the park and roads to the city, the city waiving certain bonding requirements, allowing Hilton to remain in his existing home on the property until his new home is built as part of the subdivision and sell part of the park to the city for $430,000.

“We believe it to be a generous offer, well below the market value of the land, and providing a great enhancement to our community,” Hilton wrote.

But city officials felt a third-acre park, about the same size as Olympus Pines or Butternut parks, with limited capacity for amenities did not carry significant enough value to stretch their resources thinner to maintain a pocket park.

City attorney Todd Godfrey said in his experience seeing other cities do similar projects, they don’t go well.

“Maintenance of these is difficult and the cost and burden doesn’t usually justify what public benefit comes from the properties,” he told the council during its May 5 meeting.

He noted over the last 10-12 years he’s seen very few cities taking on pocket parks because of the maintenance burden.

erty you do have, every neighborhood is looking for green space and they want you to mow it and water it,” Godfrey said. “I have a hard time seeing enough utility for the city to make it worthwhile.”

park. A bigger area could allow them to do a dog park or pickleball courts.

The plan for Hilton was to add additional space to the park element if the city decided to purchase the land, without the city’s interest, Hilton indicated they would keep the park element smaller and build a seventh house on that land. l

Cottonwood forensics team heads to nationals after successful season

T

here was no fan section that exploded when Cottonwood’s forensics team claimed victory at the regional tournament in February.

Nor were there any cheers like when a goal is scored or a basket is made as the team claimed the second-place trophy the next month at state, but through the years, the Colts speech and debate team has built a legacy.

Now that momentum continues as students are preparing for the National Speech and Debate Association that will be held June 12-17 in Louisville, Kentucky.

“It will be a good capstone to our extremely successful year,” Cottonwood forensics adviser Adam Wilkins said. “Our kids are really remarkably talented and what makes it so great is the fact that the majority of kids do all the heavy lifting, which from a personal standpoint for them, is so satisfying. We have a lot of student coaches, and we rely a lot on the kids to coach each other, especially our senior kids helping our underclassmen, and they really pulled it out of the park. That’s what you want for your team so it can sustain a legacy of success. We definitely have a legacy of success— and that’s so awesome. Just to know we have great kids in the wings, ready to jump in, is so incredible. We’re just fortunate to keep attracting these students who want to be good.”

It's a legacy that has lasted for more than five decades.

“Since the school has been built in 1970, speech and debate has always been in the top three for region. It’s pretty remarkable,” Wilkins said.

It starts in the classroom where students will research topics and spend hours practicing it for one another.

“They’ve talked about anything from national and international crises, so prevalent and relevant these days, to some state and local issues. Our orators have amazing topics and there is a great range from the benefits of anger to tribal law and the way Native Americans are portrayed. They’ve discussed ranked-choice voting, local bills, national bills, Supreme Court decisions, COVID, recession, Russian aggression. The great thing about debate is it allows these students to really engage in the world,” he said.

Wilkins not only teaches them skills, but also trust.

“The bottom line is we trust kids and they trust each other. We trust them to be captains of events. I love the idea that kids can be student captains and then the success of an event is on the shoulders of those captains. We have some amazing event captains this year. That tradition of our success is handed down from our upperclassmen to our underclassmen,” he said.

It's also about attitude.

“I always tell the kids I will never be mad if you don’t win, but I will be mad if you don’t try. That’s a life lesson, you know, to be the best they can and that’s a good thing,” Wilkins said.

By Julie Slama | j.slama@mycityjournals.com in-person, others still remain virtual. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he taught students how to communicate with their eyes since some expressions were hidden under masks and body language was limited.

“The students are taking some of those skills that they naturally developed during the pandemic, and then with their diction and articulation, they’ve become better speakers all the way around,” he said.

That has led to Cottonwood’s team competing well all season.

“We’ve really been dominating all year and have won about half dozen local tournaments,” Wilkins said about his 32-team member mostly speech team. “It’s a quite competitive region and it’s definitely a competitive state, which is nice because you don’t want to win without any competition because that victory would be a little hollow so it’s nice to win a hard thought victory.”

Wilkins attributes the success of the program to the students themselves.

“They practice for each other and model what they want to do in nationals,” he said.

“They want them ready to be able to present and not lose a step and they want to get better, each and every tournament. The first thing they do when they get a ballot back is talk about what can they do to become better, they see

what are some successes, and what are the takeaways that they can learn from in this process.

It’s another life lesson they’re learning which they can apply after their debate career.”

Wilkins is proud of his team.

“These kids are geniuses; they truly are.

There are times when they say things that truly takes my breath away. It’s not just because of their intelligence, but also for their charisma and their intuitiveness,” he said. “What I love about debate is that it allows kids to be smart and it celebrates kids being smart. Several of these young adults—and they’re not children—

are being told that their opinions matter, not just their ideas, but their opinions; and that’s what debate can provide you.”

Annual 5k is back at Churchill Jr. High, promoting exercise and resilience

t Churchill Jr. High they are off to the races again! The annual Fun Run 5k, which was put on hold for the last two years due to the pandemic, was held April 29. It came at the end of Charger Week, a weeklong focus on health and resilience.

“It was a big hit, a literal breath of fresh air, and very fun. The focus was to encourage kids to find healthy ways to cope with stress, like getting out into nature and exercising,” said PTSA President Lorraine Larson.

The fun run was started by Deb Wagner, who taught PE at Churchill for 42 years and retired in January 2020. In past years it was held in the fall and called the Halloween Hustle, with kids wearing costumes and neighbors cheering them on.

“The 5k Wellness Fun Run is one of the school’s biggest traditions. It’s designed to promote mental wellness by teaching students proactive ways to stay healthy and drug free. Students and staff can wear superhero costumes and everyone participates,” said Churchill Principal Trent Hendricks.

When race day came, it was cold and rainy, but it wasn’t enough to keep the students from finishing. Appropriate

to the superhero theme, the course wound through streets named for figures in Greek mythology—Artemis, Diana, Achilles and Hermes.

Students who dressed in capes, like seventh-grader Jane, had a bit of an advantage.

“I’m just here so I can wear a cape!”

Jane said. Her cape conveniently doubled as a warm blanket.

Current students were excited to finally join in the tradition. “We haven’t had the race for a couple of years, and everyone has to participate in it unless they are injured. There are prizes you can win, but it’s really just for fun,” said seventh-grader Amelia.

Just before 10 a.m. all students were excused from class and lined up in the west parking lot near the gates. Unified Police Department were there to get the race started and keep the students safe in busy areas like Wasatch Drive.

Larson, who planned the event with parent Lisa Doyle, said that it was a success, but they also learned a lot about what to do next time.

to help, and have a first aid station and a medical responder on a bike.

Larson will also mark the course better. She learned that lesson the hard way from her son Craig who is in eighth grade.

“Craig is a sprinter, he’s really fast, and he wanted to win a prize. He was with a group that was pretty close to the front, but they missed a course marking. They ended up taking a longer route before they got back on course,” Larson said.

Craig and his friends were good sports about it, but at the celebratory lunch he pointed out to his mom that according to his watch he had literally gone the extra mile.

“It was OK. It was a good teaching moment that life isn’t always fair. Now those kids have bragging rights that they ran a longer course. And even though they didn’t finish in time to win, we put together some prize bags for the ‘extra-milers,’” Larson said.

Doyle also helped plan the race. She had some insider knowledge—she attended Churchill Jr. High as a student and remembers Wagner inspiring all the students to take part in the tradition.

“One of the most important aspects of the fun run is that everyone in the school participates, whether or not they consider themselves an ‘athlete’.

“Deb Wagner was an amazing, inspirational superwoman! She said, ‘You can do this! You can run a 5k!’ Even if it wasn’t your thing,” Doyle recalled.

Doyle’s son Cody is an athlete, but doesn’t think of himself as a runner. Like many students, he did a combination of walking and running.

“He had a sense of pride that he finished it. Adults train for 5k races. He got to say, ‘I ran a 5k today,’” Doyle said.

Doyle said Hendricks has a great attitude and, like Wagner, he inspires the students.

“Yes, running in the rain and in the hot sun are hard, but you can do hard things.

You are resilient and it’s good for you. It’s OK to be challenged. That’s the message Mr. Hendricks wanted to get across. This is a healthy way to cope with stress,” Doyle said.

Doyle and Larson are already thinking about things they want to incorporate into next year’s fun run.

“I think we’re going to move it back to Halloween time. There’s a cool vibe with the Halloween costumes, and it’s less busy than the spring.

“We also want to let the neighborhood know when it’s happening,” Doyle said.

“In the past, and the way I remember it, people would come out of their houses and line the streets during the race. They would cheer on the students. It was a party, a community atmosphere. I’d like to see that happen again.” l

UPD hopes for another detective in new budget, final approval set for June 16

n June 16, the Holladay City Council will pass the budget for the fiscal year starting July 1.

Residents are invited to look over the budget on the city website and speak during public hearings during council meetings on June 2 and June 9.

The council passed a tentative budget in early May with department heads giving presentations to the council and further discussion happening up to the final vote on June 16.

Additional revenue from the property tax increase and new stormwater fee, both passed the council, means the city can focus on road improvements and stormwater projects, according to city officials. ARPA funds from the federal government will also see $1.8 million go toward stormwater projects in the city. The city also saw a $1 million increase in sales tax revenue.

Since the beginning of the year, the council and staff have regularly spoken about staffing issues and the budget highlights two of its priorities in retaining staff and funding changes for police, fire and public works contracts.

In the May 12 study meeting, UPD precinct chief Justin Hoyal presented proposing UPD an overall increase in its budget by just over $1.1 million, with the increase coming in salaries, precinct operational costs like fuel and vehicle replacements, and shared service costs. It’s an 18% increase from last year, with early discussions with UPD possibly getting up to 25% for Holladay. Both numbers the mayor and members of the council feel uneasy about.

Councilman Paul Fotheringham wondered why the budget increase tends to be higher for UPD each year relative to other departments, especially when they “haven’t been kicking the UPD can down the road.”

“It’s a big number…I can swallow the large increase in general, but it’s hard to get my head around why UPD always has to have this monster increase when it hasn’t been neglected,” he said during the meeting.

With the departure of recent cities from UPD in previous years by Herriman, Riverton and Taylorsville, the shared services among the members of UPD have seen budget cuts in recent years. Perhaps most significantly, Hoyal said, was fewer police officers coming out. He said their recent entry level recruitment number was 18, far below the cafeteria full of recruits when he started out.

Mayor Rob Dahle was also concerned about the amount of fund balance the precinct should have wanting to maintain a rainy day fund. City officials said during

the meeting the fund balance would be around $250,000, which also serves as an increase.

“It’s still a chunk of money having to come out of our annual budget that is now going to be ongoing,” Dahle said during the meeting, adding the city is “financially healthy” but what if in a year we go into a recession. “We should be really protective of our fund balance.”

One of the primary increases being considered would be for a fifth detective in the precinct.

One aspect, Hoyal pointed out, was UPD’s domestic violence unit used to be a shared service, now that is left up to each precinct. This investigative responsibility, Hoyal said, requires almost a full 40-hour work week for one detective. In 2021, Holladay’s precinct had 194 family offense/ domestic violence cases, which was low considering the previous four years were all above 200 cases.

“There’s a lot of follow up that needs to be done on those,” Hoyal told the council.

Another aspect is UPD’s mental health unit, created in 2017. One of the city’s four detectives is assigned to the mental health unit as a secondary assignment and is meant to go out twice a month with a licensed clinical social worker to follow up with calls, providing resources and limit the number of calls for patrol officers to respond. In 2021, mental health calls were up to 214, the most in the last five years.

Hoyal said the detective went from twice a month to spending about 95% of

the work week following up with patients.

“We have a large number of people in this community in Holladay that struggle with mental health issues,” Hoyal said.

“Compared with some of our other partners at UPD, we are a very high percentage user of mental health cases.”

With two detectives tied up in domestic violence and mental health cases, Hoyal said it’s left the remaining two detectives to follow up on property crime cases where numbers have remained steady over the past five years ranging from 900-1,100 cases a year, meaning the work load on those two detectives has doubled.

The last year has seen more in-depth investigations take place requiring more follow up and search warrants. In 2020, only three search warrants were served.

That number jumped to 30 in 2021 and 2022 already has 20 warrants so far.

In the meeting, Hoyal explained they just served a search warrant on a home and found stolen property linked to several burglaries across the valley.

“This individual has been plaguing Holladay for the last two years,” he said adding the suspected individual is linked to theft of homes and businesses in the city.

This type of work keeps their detectives busy, Hoyal said.

The additional detective would be an additional $200,000 the first year and an additional $150,000 in ongoing costs.

“This is a huge part of our budget and probably deserves the heightened level of scrutiny,” Councilman Dan Gibbons said. l

Sofi likes to draw and paint people and animals, while Avi likes to draw and paint flowers and houses. “Any flowers,” she emphasized. Violet likes to draw and paint cows.

“They’re my favorite animal,” she explained.

Wren enjoys papercutting and working with clay.

Wren and Sofi use their talents to host a YouTube channel, “Sissy Doodles” where they teach other children how to draw. In episode 15, they teach other children how to draw a platypus with a balloon.

By Councilmember Paul Fotheringham – District 3 The Arts are alive and well in Holladay, thanks to the Holladay Arts Council. Despite the entire world suffering through over 2 years of a pandemic blizzard, Holladay Arts has continued to find ways to accomplish its mission to “inspire, engage and unify the community through the arts.” From the very beginning of these weird times, when schools, offices, restaurants, and event venues were shut down, the arts council didn’t just “tie the boat to the dock and wait out the storm.” Instead, Holladay Arts served up a socially distanced “stay near your car” concert series in a local church parking lot. It was about the only fun anyone in Holladay was able to enjoy in the summer of 2020.

And perhaps the happiest folks at the concerts were members of the bands! Joe Muscolino, leader of the band that sports his name and whose band opened the concert series, had never been so happy and delighted to blow his horn again for a live audience.

As a member of Holladay’s City Council, it is my honor and a privilege to serve as the City Council liaison to Holladay Arts, led by its executive director Sheryl Gillilan. Sheryl anchors a team of committed Holladay citizen volunteers who are dedicated to making our corner of the world more beautiful and connected through the arts. So far this year, despite the ongoing threat of Greek-lettered dangers, Holladay Arts has hosted: ● Paul Draper “Virtual” Magic Show ● “Tiny Art” Show ● Fine Arts Exhibit and Sale ● Holladay Reflections in Dance Concert Summer is “prime time” for arts council events. Coming up in June, a children’s theater production, and starting July 9th at 8 pm, the summer concert series begins with Changing Lanes, followed every Saturday night with evening concerts through the end of August. The grand finale on August 27th will mark the return of the Blue Moon Festival, a five-hour arts and music extravaganza. All this and more, are brought to our community

Friends, we in Holladay are blessed in many ways. Despite the global, national, and even local storms of conflict and woe that rage all around us, Holladay seems a relative oasis. For me, much of that oasis is provided by the arts. We may yet, as a community, confront more challenges brought on by these weird times. It will be the arts that will help us re-center ourselves and re-discover our common humanity. It will be the arts that remind us of and re-connect us to the beautiful parts of our existence on this rock we all live on. Holladay’s First Nationally Recognized Historic District On April 11th the National Park Service officially listed the PARADE OF HOMES LAKEWOOD SITE on the National Register of Historic Places. West of the Cottonwood Club, most of the homes in the neighborhood were built for the 1955 Parade of Homes. The neighborhood features a wide variety of progressive architectural styles for 1955, including mid-century modern, chalet-modern, and ranch. A number of the homes feature the designs of Stephen McDonald, one of Utah’s most important modernist architects.

Listing on the National Register is intended to encourage preservation as well as provide recognition of a property’s significance. A major benefit of listing on the National Register is the availability of TAX CREDITS for qualified restoration work.

Spring Brings New Roads To Holladay City

The City of Holladay has started an asphalt overlay program to improve existing roads throughout City limits.

The work includes lowering existing manholes and valves, removing the existing old asphalt layer, and installing new asphalt pavement.

After the manholes and valves in the street are lowered, the milling of existing asphalt will commence.

The old asphalt surface will be removed, swept, and prepared for a new lift of asphalt during this process.

Shortly following the removal of old asphalt, the paving crews will install a new two-inch asphalt surface on the roadway. No traffic will be allowed until the new asphalt is compacted and cooled during this process.

The utilities will be raised upon completion of the overlay to create a smooth surface.

Residents will be notified before this work by flyers requesting vehicles not be parked in the roadway during working hours 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The roadways will be usable during this work except for short periods as the equipment moves through the area.

The contractors are making every effort to minimize disruption with patience and consideration of the public. The new roadways will be a great addition to the neighborhoods.

Holladay Hills Update: Development at Cottonwood Mall Site Taking Shape Information Provided by the Development Partners Holladay Hills is a 58-acre mixed-use project located at the former Cottonwood Mall site, that will include living and office space, along with dining, shopping and entertainment options and a central park for gatherings. Once completed, it will offer over 600,000 square feet of commercial space - about 6 times the size of the booming Holladay Village district! Holladay Hills will also provide a variety of living options to meet the needs of singles, families and empty nesters. There will be apartments, townhomes, single family homes and condos available – in total, over 600 muchneeded residences.

Here is a summary of current and upcoming project activity: • Over two-thirds of the underground infrastructure is complete.

• Curb, gutter and asphalt is scheduled to wrap-up in the summer of 2022.

• Holladay Hills development will relocate power distribution lines serving the project underground. The transmission lines that are located along Memory and Arbor Lanes are part of the Rocky Mountain Power transmission network that supplies power to not only the City of Holladay, but also other communities; the transmission work is not driven by the Holladay Hills project.

• Many commercial and retail tenants have signed letters of intent. As early as summer of 2022, announcements could be made regarding incoming retailers and office users that will be located in new buildings and the former Macy’s building on Block B, which is being repurposed/redesigned.

• Block D is currently under construction and is anticipated to be ready for occupancy in the summer of 2023. This block will feature retail/restaurants with multi-family residential above and an interior parking garage. Purchase reservations for sixteen penthouse condos began in May 2022.

Honorees selected at the inaugural Comcast RISE Black Excellence Event

ardware Creative Collective and Comcast partnered to host the inaugural Comcast RISE Black Excellence Event in Salt Lake City on Apr. 20. The celebration honored Utah Black Creatives in a range of industries from the arts, business, education and film to mental health, armed forces, tech and venture capital.

Honorees were selected based on their ability to showcase their creativity through inspiration, intersection and innovation.

“It was truly amazing to see something that started as a vision and brainstorming with folks around a kitchen table turn into an extraordinary celebration of Utah’s Black creatives,” said Deneiva Knight, External Affairs Director, Comcast Mountain West Region. “For me, Hardware Collective is a platform for Black creatives to acknowledge and celebrate themselves and their peers versus waiting and hoping to receive accolades from outsiders. The love and appreciation in the room that night were unmatchable.”

Mountain lion surprises Holladay family on Easter weekend

he Davies family are accustomed to nature. In fact, deer frequent their property on Holladay Boulevard. But when a deer turned up dead one day and covered with plant debris the next, Jennifer Davies wondered if it could be some sort of strange, ritualistic killing.

To catch the perpetrator, she set up a camera where the deer was found. Upon checking the footage the next day, to her surprise the blazing eyes of a cougar greeted her. The perpetrator wasn’t human after all.

“I was concerned,” Davies said. “My neighbors—they have dogs and a cat.

They’re always let outside. I have small children that are out here.”

Not far from the Davies’ home is Knudsen Park and several restaurants.

“My main concern was just the safety of the community,” Davies said.

To encourage the safety of residents, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) noted in a press release that cougar numbers in Utah have been growing steadily. They also noted that deer are the main prey of cougars (also called mountain lions), so cougars can be found wherever deer are, as was true in the Davies case.

Also typical in the Davies case is the fact that the cougar covered the deer with plant debris.

“People are the most likely to encounter cougars in areas frequented by mule deer and during the early morning and at dusk, when cougars are most likely to be hunting,” Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Game Mammals Coordinator Darren DeBloois said.

You should report a cougar sighting if it has killed something in a neighborhood or yard, exhibits aggressive behavior, or appears several times on your security cameras. One-time sightings of cougars are typically when it is moving through an

area.

The Utah DWR has the following safety tips to avoid conflict with cougars: do not hike or jog alone; maintain awareness in cougar country while hiking or jogging and avoid using headphones that block your surroundings; travel in groups and keep everyone together including children and dogs; make noise while hiking to alert cougars of your presence; leave the area if you find a dead animal, especially a deer or elk, since it could be a cougar kill; if you live in an area near deer habitat, do not leave children outside unattended, especially at dawn and dusk; as a deterrent, install outside and motion-sensitive lighting around your property; trim vegetation and remove wood piles to reduce hiding places for wildlife; and bring pets and livestock inside at night or secure them in a barn or kennel with a top.

If you encounter a cougar, the DWR suggests the following: never run from a cougar; maintain eye contact; pick up

children and pets or keep them very close; stand up tall; do not crouch or squat; make yourself bigger by raising and waving your arms or jacket above your head; talk firmly in a loud voice, back away and leave the area; fight back if you are attacked and protect your head and neck.

While living in tree-canopied Holladay has lovely benefits, cougars follow where there are deer, which linger in leafy areas. A little cougar awareness goes a long way. Just ask the Davies family. l

Olympus soccer wraps up season in second round

A

lot of coaches say they would prefer not to play a region opponent early in the postseason. But that’s just what the Olympus boys soccer team got.

Meeting Brighton for the third time on the year, Olympus fell in the second round of the Class 5A state tournament on May 17, 3-2 to the Bengals. The teams split the matchups against one another during the regular season. Olympus prevailed at home on March 30 in a highs-scoring 4-2 match. Brighton returned the favor on April 22 by the score of 3-2.

The third matchup was, of course, by far the most important.

Brighton and Olympus battled to a 1-1 tie at the break, but the Bengals scored twice in the final 40 minutes. Meanwhile, the Titans could only manage one goal and were unable to match Brighton and force overtime. Parker Stebbing and Christian Kercher scored for Olympus in a losing cause.

The defeat ended Olympus’s solid season at 10-7 overall. In Region 6 play, the Titans were 7-5, good enough for fourth place. Olym-

pus was a game behind Brighton in the standings. Skyline was also 8-4, while Murray won the league at 9-3. Olympus outscored its foes in region play 24-19. In all its games, Olympus had a 34-25 advantage on the scoreboard. The Titans only had two games in which it failed to score, both of which came against Skyline.

Meanwhile, Olympus had five games in which it scored at least three goals. Defensively, Olympus posted five shutouts.

The Titans enjoyed balanced scoring this season, as 12 players registered at least one goal. Abe Garriot, a senior forward, led the team with five goals. Will Cox, Max Foulger and Kercher each had four goals. Clayton Numbers and Stebbing had three goals apiece this season. Junior Yien Rout and senior Jose Torres both spent time in the net.

Nine seniors will say goodbye to the program, but there are plenty of options for next season. Olympus will have eight players coming back for their senior seasons next year.

There were also four sophomores on the roster.

he Olympus High boys volleyball team came up just short in the finals of the Utah Boys Volleyball Association state championship against Pleasant Grove at Wasatch High School May 7.

The Titans lost in three sets to the Vikings 19-25, 25-18, 15-10.

“We’re extremely proud of the boys and the work that they put in to make this season such a success,” said assistant coach Brett Peterson.

“Despite the disappointing end, it’s been another great year for Olympus volleyball.”

In the title match, the Titans were led on offense by senior captains outside hitter Syun Jones and setter Quinn Johnson and came away with the first set. They then started the second set strong, getting out to a six-point lead before the Vikings came back and made it a tight game and then they closed out the second set with a run. Pleasant Grove went up 8-4 in the final set to 15 and Olympus showed their fight to close the gap to being down one at 11-10 until the Vikings ran away with the final four points.

Christ United Methodist Church

Starting on July 1, 2022, the new pastor at Christ United Methodist Church - SLC will be Rev. Lisa Petty. For five years, Rev. Lisa has been the pastor of Montrose United Methodist Church in Colorado. Prior to that, she served as pastor of Rifle United Methodist Presbyterian Church in Rifle, Colorado. Rev. Lisa graduated from Iliff School of Theology with a Master of Divinity, received her Local Pastor License in January 2012, was commissioned as a Provisional Elder in June 2012, and became an Ordained Elder in June 2014. Her history includes extensive experience in youth and young adult ministries dating back to 1998.

Q: Rev. Lisa, what was the life pathway that led you to become a Methodist minister?

A: I grew up in Southern California with a United Methodist Pastor for a father. I have one older sister, one younger sister, and a younger brother who is an ordained UMC pastor and serves the people of Colorado Springs at St Paul UMC. I am also a fourth-generation Methodist pastor as my grandmother was one of the first women ordained a deacon in the Methodist Episcopal Church. After 10 years of denying my call to the ministry, and finally going back to school to finish an undergraduate degree, I moved to Denver to do my Master of Divinity in two and one-half years.

Q: Tell us about your family and interests outside of the church.

With its second-place finish, the Titans extend their streak of 12 consecutive years with a top-10 finish in state.

Their journey to the finals at state began with a bye in the first round—due to being a fourth seed after a strong regular season and second-place finish in the Salt Lake Region. In the round of 16, Olympus defeated Provo 25-16, 25-18 with quick offense and “phenomenal back row defense,” according to Peterson. They then faced Weber in the quarterfinals and won in a tight match 32-30, 25-21. In the semifinals, the Titans faced Copper Hills, who had upset the top-ranked Springville squad, and was able to defeat the Grizzlies in straight sets 25-21, 25-16 to reach the championship.

The program’s junior varsity team also recently won the Region JV championship against West Jordan 25-21—in a “rubber match” of playing one set to 25—after defeating the Jaguars 18-25, 27-25, 16-14 in the initial championship game. The Titans defeated No. 1 seeded Bingham in straight sets twice on their way to the final match.

Junior captain setter Kade Crayk led the offense with sophomore outside hitter Reef Smylie earning the team’s MVP honors. The defensive MVP was senior libero Javin Matsumori with sophomore Miles Burningham and freshman Yuse Jones also being noted for their contributions this season by Peterson.

“The effort that our teams have put in this season has been absolutely remarkable and reflects a discipline and love for the game that is really rare,” Peterson said.

“This team has been a unique joy to coach and has made for a special season for all

the players and coaches involved.”

The Titans head coach Ben Chamberlain was assisted by Peterson and Taran Hall.

“We’ve been extremely proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish in the Olympus volleyball program,” Peterson

said. “We have created a program that has proved itself as a perennial powerhouse in Utah, and we’re confident that we will be able to carry this momentum as boys volleyball is sanctioned at the high school level.” l

Water polo’s popularity on the rise in local clubs

T

he Holladay area has seen a rise in popularity in swimming with clubs like Olympus Aquatics. What many residents don’t realize is that the sleeping giant of water polo is hatching from these same clubs.

Olympus and Skyline headline as two of the best water polo clubs in the state. Olympus is led by boys coach Shawn Stringham and girls coach Alexis Courtney. Skyline is led by girls coach Allison Fernandez and boys coach Brett Luch.

Other powerhouse programs like Kearns, Park City and Murray will jockey for positioning in the state water polo championships this month.

“I founded the water polo club from Olympus Aquatics in 2013,” coach Stringham said. “I’m also the men’s head coach for the Olympus Water Polo program within Olympus Aquatics. I also work as the Water Polo Club director for the entire program.”

While wearing different hats within the organization has kept him busy, Stringham remains as determined as ever to grow water polo within the state of Utah.

“The growth of water polo is really exciting in Utah,” Stringham said. “It’s getting national attention. They see the growth that this sport is having here. We are working to make this a sport in the UHSAA. The powers of USA Water Polo are watching Utah as a model for water polo growth. Olympus provides opportunities not only for Olympus kids but others in Utah.”

One thing Stringham is especially proud of is the growth of the Olympus Aquatics program on the water polo side. For some time, Olympus and Skyline were a combined club team but have since split into their separate programs.

“We have new water polo clinics almost every week throughout the summer,” Stringham said. “Athletes join in starting with the 11-12-year-old range. We teach Splash Ball which teaches them swim safety skills and gets them into our program. Last year, we introduced 100 kids to Splash Ball. We want to get them excited about a safe way to experience our programs. We do weekly Splash Ball sessions throughout the summer.”

The growth of water polo has increased exponentially in Utah on the women’s side too.

“We’ve had a lot of years of growth,” Courtney said.

“Water polo is competitive and physical. It’s important to communicate and play together as a team. We need to play offense on a player and then defense. We need to do well individually and also work together as a team. We used to be combined with Skyline but then the teams were split. Several of my juniors and seniors split. One junior just started playing this year and the other girls are sophomores.”

Several girls have taken coach Courtney’s message to heart and stood out as team leaders.

“It took everyone to accomplish our goal in the tournament,” Courtney said. “Bella Faraone is an excellent goalie.

Elle Graham is an excellent center defender. Ava Ransom is a great driver and plays center driver. Other key contributors for our team include Megan Stringham, Ainsley Marsh, Julia Ransom and Brianna Petty.”

Jaydon Courtney, coach Courtney’s son, is a freshman at Olympus and competes for the boys 16U and 18U teams.

“My mom has been the most helpful person for my mental state that there is,” he said. “She’s there to calm me down and tell me what I can do better. She’s been my rock and helped with problems I’ve had with keeping my head level.

She played collegiate water polo at Slippery Rock University.”

Despite the high expectations that come with being the

son of a former collegiate water polo player, Jaydon Courtney strives to keep a light attitude.

“My main goal for high school is to have the most fun I can,” he said. “We won 16U and will hopefully compete for an 18U championship.”

Fellow Olympus teammate and sophomore Nick Oman feels that he has a unique talent that helps him compete with older players at the 18U level.

“For me speed and stamina is my greatest strength,” Oman said. “I can keep going longer than a bunch of people.

It helps when I’m going against bigger people. I put myself in positions where they can’t manhandle me.”

On the Skyline side, both the boys and girls are also near the top of water polo competition at every age group. Fernandez, the Skyline girls water polo coach, is pleased with how her upstart group performed.

“The majority of our girls had never played the sport until a year and a half ago,” Fernandez said. “In a short amount of time, they just placed third in their first 16U competition. They have put in hard work in such little time. They improved from girls that didn’t know how to play to placing in state.”

One of those girls that has improved quite a bit is Aubrey Hall. She is a senior at Skyline High school and will be playing for the club team at the University of Utah next year. She also hopes to referee water polo games.

“Being a referee gives you a whole new viewpoint of the sport,” Hall said. “One of the greatest water polo players that I met said you can’t blame the entire game on the referees unless you did everything perfectly and still lost.”

Hall is one of the leaders of a young 18U team that will have to work their way up in the upcoming tournament. They had some close losses this year that affected their seeding. On the boys side, the Skyline 16U team won every game except the championship game to Olympus.

“In water polo there is a combination of swimming, wrestling and treading water,” Skyline boys coach Luch said.

“There is strategy involved in trying to get in between the defender and the goal. The sport is a combination of basketball, hockey and lacrosse.”

Skyline has several talented players on the boys roster that have made a difference in their performance against state competition.

“Our biggest name in 18U would probably be Tom Diaz,” Luch said. “He is one of the best players in the state and has collegiate potential.”

Other notable players mentioned by Luch include Theo Swapp, Richard Heckmann, Sam Brooks, Mikey Hackett, Dillon Shaw and Stephen Mecham.l

Salt Lake County receives EPA funds to clean up contaminated sites for development

B

rownfield areas in Salt Lake County can hinder development because, without proper cleanup, redevelopment or reuse they could spread contamination to surrounding areas. Most brownfields are properties with old gas stations, auto repair shops and dry cleaners, or near smelters, railroad lines and mines.

But the Environmental Protection Agency has awarded Salt Lake County nearly $4 million in an effort to clean up these sites and create vibrant communities and business centers.

“We’re grateful for the EPA’s substantial investment in Salt Lake County,” said Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson. “It expands our ability to effectively leverage the revolving loan fund and make a difference.”

The EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund allows the county and its coalition partners (Salt Lake City and Ogden) to issue loans to public or private property owners who meet EPA qualifications for assistance with brownfields.

Funds are expected to help clean at least 10 properties in the next few years, many of which are in former industrial areas that need significant cleanup to be safely redeveloped.

Loans are available to qualified governmental entities, site owners, or developers with lowto zero-interest rates.

“With our community’s history of industrial and mining work, there’s no shortage of properties that could use this EPA money for cleanup efforts,” said Kersten Swinyard, program manager for the Wasatch Brownfields Coalition and Salt Lake County senior economic development manager. “We’ll use this money to accelerate redevelopment on those contaminated properties and make our cities safer and cleaner for everyone.”

In 2021, Centro Civico Mexicano received funds to work with the county to remove asbestos, mercury, hydrocarbons, and other contaminants in the soil. The remediated property now features a community center and 61 apartments for low-income seniors. The cleanup led to more than $25.2 million in leveraged redevelopment funding on the project.

The Wasatch Brownfields Coalition works closely with the EPA and the Utah Department of Environmental Quality throughout the cleanup processes. The EPA has awarded $5,850,000 in total to Salt Lake County throughout its program history.

A one-horse race

W

hen I was in eighth grade, I was elected to the class senate. In ninth grade, I was elected as a cheerleader. Did I deserve these titles?

Probably not. But I’d bribed fellow students with copious amounts of candy because that’s the American way.

After a series of decidedly terrible life choices, my scholastic career drove off the rails and I never ran for election again. When I turned 18, I registered to vote and I’ve cast a vote in every election since. I also respond to Twitter polls, fill out Amazon reviews and take surveys at the bottom of yard-long Kohl’s receipts.

Now that I’m a semi-functioning adult, it’s up to me to choose the right people to lead us into the future. Since the future is nuclear bomb-shaped, we won’t need leaders much longer, but elections are important, at least until that mushroom cloud rises over the mountains.

Here’s why voting is funny. You’ll get a kick out of this. When I vote for new leadership or more progressive ideas, the person/issue I’m voting for rarely wins. Why? Because I live in conservative Utah.

So, for now, I’m here in Utah, voting for things that matter to me and to many other people, without a Popsicle’s chance in hell of it working out.

In fact, we started an election night drinking game. For every winner who isn’t a conservative white male, we take a shot of tequila. We’ve been sober for decades. Because here’s the truth: My vote rarely counts in Utah.

Oh, our esteemed leaders say my vote counts, but they know it’s a lie.

With their abstract-painting, gerrymandered districts they’ve effectively shut down my voice. I feel all I can do is

en’s rights, access to health care, gun control and education. That’s a difference I see between male and female roles: men want power, women want to lead.

After being mansplained to since birth, I understand my female brain can’t comprehend the problems involved with running the state. Like, how can our leaders make money if we don’t let them relocate a prison across the valley so they can develop prime property? How can the state generate revenue on alcohol without ridiculous licensing fees and policies? How can we possibly treat educators, minorities, or uteruses with respect, without creating laws to rein them in?

And then they have the gall to say, vote in the leaders you want. How? Tell me how and I’ll do it! Phew. I must be off my anti-hysterical meds.

If I learned anything from running for office in junior high, it’s that voters will follow the candy. But as a female voter in Utah, I’m tired of the sugary-sweet, syrupy condescension.
