JANAURY 2021
MAYOR’S MESSAGE January 17th marks the 5-year anniversary of the tragic shooting death of Officer Douglas S. Barney. Doug’s life was taken on a quiet Sunday morning while responding to a routine traffic incident. This tragedy continues to remind us of the real dangers our Police Officers face in service to our community. We honor Doug with a “HOLLADAY BACKS THE BLUE” weeklong event this year. It is our opportunity to thank the Holladay Unified Police Precinct for their continued dedication to the citizens of Holladay. On Monday, January 11th we will post banners of our officers throughout the Holladay Village. Activities have been organized in support of the event and will run through January 17th (see associated ad). When you see one of our officers on patrol or out in the community, do not hesitate to give them a wave, or simply let them know how much we appreciate their service. For those that knew Doug, there would be no better way to honor his memory. To say 2020 was a challenging year would be an understatement. But as the saying goes, “it’s always darkest before the dawn”. With the vaccine rolling out, there is a growing sense of optimism in the community. As much as we all appreciate the role technology has played in helping us navigate the pandemic, we look forward to the days when a meal can be shared with friends and family, school activities are back to normal, we can attend live concerts/plays/movies, and gather with family, friends and colleagues face-to-face. A remnant of these challenging times may be a new-found appreciation for each other. In the meantime, let’s not let our guard down. Continue to wear your mask, social distance, wash your hands … Though there is light at the end of the tunnel, we must continue to protect one another until we get the green light from our health care professionals. Finally, a note of personal thanks to those that have sacrificed the most during the pandemic. Not everyone had the luxury of pivoting to a remote work environment. Those tasked with delivering the day-to-day services so essential to our community; health care professionals, teachers, police officers, fire fighters, food service workers, and everyone else that fits in to this category--- THANK YOU! You were and continue to be the heroes among us. Perhaps another positive remnant of this pandemic will be abandoning our urge to look outside of our own community for the leadership and inspiration we crave. What we hoped would come from Washington was alive and well in our own back yard. As long as this continues to be the case, our future remains bright. I wish you and your family an abundance of good health, happiness and prosperity in the New Year!!! – Rob Dahle, Mayor
