he Herriman girls soccer team had its season come to an unexpected end in the second round of the state playoffs after a 3-4 overtime loss to Fremont. Despite the early exit, it was an overall successful year for the Mustangs under first-year head coach Ryan Rumfallo. The season got off to a bit of a rocky start as the team went 2-3 to begin the year. “We had a pretty tough preseason. Being new this year, I had to learn a lot about the girls and how they play,” Rumfallo said. It also took some time for Rumfallo to install a new system into the team, one that emphasizes maximizing goal-scoring chances by shooting early and often. The new mindset was adopted by the team, Rumfallo said, led by the leadership of team captains Kylie Sanderson, Sawyer Service and Emma Carver. “Finishing has always been one of our weaker spots,” Carver told the Herriman Journal earlier this season. “[Coach Rumfallo] has really pushed us to believe that we can score, that we can put it in the back of the net, which I think has helped us a lot.” It sure did help the Mustangs, as they went on to lose just one game the rest of the season and outscored their Region 3 opponents 24-4. Senior forward Katrina Estrada led the team with 11 goals followed by Emma Carver with four, plus a team-high four assists.
