DAVIS PEOPLE: Mike Murphy changed the Davis County music scene By Peri Kinder - peri.k@davisjournal.com

S

ome things are just easy. For Davis County resident Mike Murphy, that thing is music. Murphy was six years old, sitting on his grandma’s porch swing in New Mexico, when his older sister started singing “Old Rugged Cross.” He joined in, adding harmony to her melody. His mom was incredulous, and asked where he’d learned to harmonize. His answer was, “I just hear it.” He’s been hearing music all his life. Murphy started playing the trumpet at 10, eventually earning a degree in music education from Texas Tech University, with an emphasis on trumpet. When he was 12 he picked up a friend’s guitar and in less than 30 minutes he was playing better than anyone in the room. “I really think it’s a gift,” he said. “I’ve worked with a lot of people that became really good musicians, but it came hard for them. Who knows what I would have become if I’d applied myself.” As a performer, he found another talent. “I discovered I had a voice. It made a difference when I found out I could actually sing and girls liked it.
