2023 Morgan County Annual 4-H Achievement Night

Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter dies at 96

By Nicole Reed Morgan County 4-H Program Coordinator II

After recently being placed on hospice care, Rosalynn Carter passed away on Sunday at the age of 96. Carter, who is generally credited with elevating the position of first lady into a visible and professional one, was an advocate for a number of issues during her time in the White House, as well as the five decades afterward. While associated with numerous causes, Carter was most noted for her passionate commitment to raising awareness of mental healthcare issues. She and former president Jimmy Carter were married for 77 years.

n October, we love to recognize the accomplishments of our 4-H members and leaders. It is also a great way to celebrate the end of one 4-H year and the beginning of another. On Oct. 16, we held our annual 4-H Achievement Night. During this celebration, we recognized the following people: • Horse Council Members • Livestock Council Members • The 4-H Extension Staff • Teen and Junior Teen Council Officers • TRY (Teens Reaching Youth) Team Members • Livestock Ambassadors • Horse Ambassadors • 1st Year 4-Hers • 10 Year 4-Hers • 4-H Leader Years of Service Awards • 4-H Volunteer Awards All of these awards are a great honor, but the most prestigious awards of the whole night were our 4-H Volunteer Awards: Salute to 4-H Volunteers, Salute to 4-H Youth Volunteers, 4-H Mentor of the Year, Clover Key Award, Doorknob Award, and 4-H Family of the Year. The Salute to 4-H Volunteers Award recognizes a volunteer who has provided outstanding service to 4-H. This year’s award recipient was Mike & Keri Kinghorn. Mike & Keri have been involved in the 4-H Program for the past five years. Mike is one of our Sheep Superintendents and Keri is the Vice President of Operations on the Morgan County Junior Livestock Council. They are one of our local sheep producers and help to provide some of our youth with lambs for their 4-H and FFA projects every year. Mike and Keri have brought new perspectives to the council and have played a large role in helping us continue to grow our livestock program. They provide a lot of help and support to many families throughout the county. Thank you, Mike and Keri, for your service and dedication to our wonderful youth and their families. We appreciate all that you do for our 4-H program!

Storms expected to cause travel delays

While the winter weather has already begun to affect road traffic, storm systems on the east coast are anticipated to create headaches for flights across the country early in the week, and begin affecting the west by the Thanksgiving holiday. Weather forecasters predict snow and freezing rain in the pacific northwest through Idaho by Wednesday, although how much of it will hit southeastern Idaho remains to be seen. As always, anyone with plans to travel by air over the holiday is advised to leave plenty of travel time to make their connections, and expect some amount of delay.

Morgan City annexes 54 acres near sewer lagoons By Linda Petersen

M

organ City Council has approved the first annexation into the city in a long time. On Nov. 14 the city council voted unanimously to allow the annexation of 54.36 acres of property located at approximately 555 West Old Highway Road, 936 North 700 East, 1075 North 700 East, and 1050 North 600 West, Morgan. The annexation was requested by Lisa and Shaun Preece, Waylon Michaela Preece, Blake and Eugenia Rowser, Arlene Christensen, and Deanne Johnson. It changes zoning on the site to comply with what the city's master plan shows. The applicants also requested zoning of R-1-10 for the properties which would allow Shaun and Lisa Preece to put their existing home on a quarter acre and build a home and shop on the remainder

of their property. That evening the city council also approved an annexation agreement (similar to a development agreement) which outlines the conditions the petitioners need to meet. “Both the city and the owners of the property need to understand in detail exactly what needs to happen once the property is annexed, and so for that purpose we put together what's called an annexation agreement,” City Attorney Gary Crane said. “There are standards regarding the utilities, details regarding the roads, the other things that will need to be done as time goes on as this property is developed.” Those standards include a requirement that the owners install an 8-inch sewer line on the west side of the subdivided property. The remaining parcels will need to connect to the sewer system as they are developed. Owners of

any parcel that is subdivided will need to submit a subdivision application that complies with the city’s standards. They will also need to provide storm drain facilities and lines with related easements at the time of development approval to accommodate future development. They will need to construct 600 West north of the UDOT and railroad right of way if they want to develop or subdivide any of the agricultural parcels on the north side of those rights of way. The owner will need to provide access to the agricultural parcel. Obtaining access and providing utilities to that parcel will be entirely the owners’ responsibility. No homes will be allowed on the lots that front 700 East. The owners will be required to pay for and connect to secondary water when it becomes available. The property already receives water and power from Morgan City.l

Italy’s largest trial of mafia members in at least three decades ended recently, and resulted in conviction and sentencing of around 200 crime gang members for a total of 2,200 years in prison. The trial began in 2021, and had to held in a purpose-built bunker in Lamezia Terme out of safety concerns. Over 400 lawyers acted for the defense, and a total of at least 900 witnesses were called. Five life sentences and three thirty year sentences were handed out among the defendants, who included those with nicknames such as “The Wolf,” “Fatso,” and “Lamb Thigh,” among others. Politicians, police officers, and local officials were among those sentenced in the massive trial.

Missing Hiker in Big Bend National Park found safe

The National Park Service announced that a search that began on November 9 had been located in the park. Christy Perry, a 25 year old hiker, had been found conscious and talking in a remote area of the park. After locating Perry, rescue crews navigated steep terrain to bring her to safety. She was transported to a local hospital for medical attention. One of the takeaways from the incident was to be sure that those who are travelling provide an itinerary to someone else who is aware of where they are supposed to be. For her part, Perry was not known to be missing for several days as a result of not having related her plans to any family or friends.
