Retiring Sheriff Blaine Breshears reflects on 26 years of service to Morgan County Olivia Rees

A

fter 26 years in law enforcement, Sheriff Blaine Breshears is passing on the torch and retiring at the end of this year. “My job description is unique because it is dictated by state law,” shares Breshears. “Our responsibilities include protecting and enforcing the laws of the state within our county as well as ensuring safety in the community by enforcing these laws. I am not perfect by all means, but I feel I have upheld the constitution and community members’ constitutional rights. I tried to instill into the sheriff’s office employees to be fair, firm, and consistent. I feel integrity is crucial to success, and without it, you don’t have much.” Of a high caliber character, Breshears says, “There is a quote displayed in my office that I have tried to live by, ‘Do

the right thing at the right time for the right reasons.’” After graduating from Morgan High School, he served a mission to Ventura, California, and, shortly after his return, fell in love with a Pentz girl from Croydon named Shasta. The two married, and together they have five amazing children and two beautiful grandchildren. Breshears loves to be with his family fishing, boating, hunting, etc. “I had a good friend whom I looked up to and admired who was a Highway Patrolman, and from an early age, law enforcement piqued my interest. I couldn’t get the thought off of my mind, so I put it to rest by joining the police academy in 1994. I enjoy helping and serving others. I take great pride in our little Morgan community,

Just over 5 miles into her Thursday evening run along the familiar Neuse River Greenway, Raleigh mother of three Susan Karnatz was fatally shot by a 15-year-old boy whose shooting rampage killed five people, wounded two and frightened hundreds more in surrounding neighborhoods. Karnatz died 1.9 miles short of her 7-mile goal for the day she was killed. Now, runners across the globe are finishing the final leg of the run the 49-year-old never got to complete. Organizing under the hashtag #RunforSue, hundreds of runners are sharing photos of their routes to mark the distance she covered or 7 miles (11.2 kilometers) to match her goal – on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to show the Karnatz family how many people she inspired. 23 contact lenses removed from patient’s eye

A woman in Newport Beach, California saw an ophthalmologist about pain and discomfort in her eye. As the doctor examined beneath her eyelid, he was shocked to find a large clump of contact lenses—eventually totaling 23—from her eye. The patient, a senior who had worn contacts for over 30 years, was surprised to realize she had forgotten to remove her previous contacts before placing new ones in her eye for nearly a month. The doctor explained that becoming desensitized to contacts over time is common, but he had never seen anything like this incident.

Link between hair products and uterine cancer

A recent study has established a doubled risk for uterine cancers among users of hair-straightening products. Previous studies had linked the use of such products to an increased risk of a number of types of cancer, but this study suggests a striking doubling of uterine cancer risk for users. The exact nature of the link between cancers and the chemicals used in hair straightening has not yet been determined, though the increased risk is clear.
