Morgan community goes pink for volleyball game By Verlene Johnson

O

n Sept. 27, Morgan High School traded its traditional Trojan maroon and white attire for pink. With the halls, gym and fans decked out in pink they are ready for the 12th annual Sheri Wright Pink Night, sponsored by the MHS volleyball team. Sherie was an educator with a great love for volleyball. She could be found in the gym at any given practice and never missed a game. Not only did she want to see success on the court but also in the classroom where she treasured education. Wright lost her battle with cancer on March 10, 2012. Through a silent auction, with items donated by members of the community, a baked good table, donation buckets and a live quilt auction, members both within and outside of the community helped to raise $17,000 which will be donated to cancer research. Before the game started five members of the community who have or are currently battling cancer were honored. Taking center court with their families were Jace Hansen, Tiffany Netz, and Danielle Bagnell. Sam Digman, who was too sick to attend was represented by his parents. Jace Hansen, a seventh grader at Mountain Green Middle School, was diagnosed with stage three Osteosarcoma and bone cancer in his right femur in May of 2021. He completed six rounds of chemotherapy at Primary Children’s Hospital. After two rounds of chemo, he underwent a 10-hour surgery where the majority of his right femur was removed replacing the bone with a metal rod and receiving a full knee replacement. After an additional surgery this past summer to remove a nodule on his right lung, Jace is currently in remission. “Jace is the toughest kid,” commented his family. “He never complained about having to go through this. Jace is a war-

NEWS BREAK Couric urges women to get mammograms

TV host Katie Couric said she’s been diagnosed with breast cancer, and underwent surgery and radiation treatment this summer to treat the tumor. Couric, who memorably was tested for colon cancer on the Today show in 2000, announced her diagnosis in an essay on her website, saying she hoped it would encourage other women to be tested. “My left breast does feel like I’ve been sunbathing topless, but other than that, I’ve felt fine,” she wrote. Couric’s first husband, Jay Monahan, died of colon cancer in 1998 at age 41 and her sister Emily was 54 when she died of pancreatic cancer in 2001. Given her family history, Couric wrote, “why would I be spared? My reaction went from ‘why me?’ to ‘why not me?’”

Facebook parent company shuts down two fake accounts

Facebook parent company Meta announced it had detected and shut down two separate networks of fake accounts engaged in covert influence operations run from China and Russia. The Chinese network was small and received barely any attention, but it did include some accounts that posed as Americans on both sides of the political spectrum, according to a Meta report. Meta publicly detailed the takedown as it remains on high alert for foreign interference in the U.S. midterm elections, a Meta spokesperson told CNN. Ben Nimmo, Meta’s global threat intelligence lead, told CNN it was the first time the company had seen Chinese accounts targeting Americans in this way. The company has shared details of the Chinese accounts with the FBI, a Meta spokesperson said.

The House has passed legislation introduced by GOP Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Democratic Rep. Zoe Lofgren of California to make it harder to overturn a certified presidential election in the future by proposing changes to the Electoral Count Act. Cheney and Lofgren say the recommendations could help prevent a future attack on the U.S. Capitol and argue this legislation is critical, pointing to candidates currently running for offices at the state and federal level who could impact future elections. The vote was 229-203. All four of Utah’s congressional representatives voted against the bill. Supporters of the plan must now decide how to reconcile the differences that exist between the House and Senate’s version of the proposed changes to the Electoral Count Act.
