HILL AIR FORCE BASE–Gold medalist Olympians Justin Schoenefeld and Ashley Caldwell are used to doing flips in the air – on snow – not in an F-16 Thunderbird flying high above the ground. The Olympic skiers were guests aboard the planes during a flight demonstration practice run Friday in preparation for the much anticipated Warriors Over the Wasatch Air show Saturday and Sunday at Hill Air Force Base.

“It was so insane,” said Caldwell when she was back on firm ground. “I didn’t know if I’d keep my food down. I can’t believe these guys do this all the time. It was tense.”

“It was crazy,” said Schoenefeld. “It was like an elephant on your chest and your vision goes away for a minute. We were going 4G’s and I thought that was crazy then we went faster and I thought ‘oh gee.’”

It was a real treat, said Lt. Col. Ryan Yingling. “It was unique and fun for us and fun for you guys. It was a blast. We got through everything and went into super sonic airspace and broke the sound barrier.”

They started training on the F-16 early this morning, said Jake Impellizzeri, Thunderbird eight.

“It was information by firehose. I put Ashley through the wringer. We pulled 9G’s and 1.28 Mach. We did loops and rolls and she got some stick time. It was an honor.”

What they do in the Olympics showcases a beacon of excellence, he said. “It’s doing something greater than ourselves.That’s what they represent. It's an inspiration to our team that’s what we try to achieve in the Air Force.”

Caldwell said she’s trained her whole life to reach the Gold medal standard. “The Air Force sets a high bar. I give a high performance in skiing and these guys give a high performance in a different way. It’s two different worlds.”

An aerial doesn’t get any less scary, said Schoenefeld. “When I do a triple backflip I’m nervous every day. When we took off I thought ‘oh we’re about to go fast.’”

It was absolutely incredible, said Caldwell. “My Gold medal went through the speed of sound. This was the highlight of my post Olympic experience. It was a dream come true and now it’s off my bucket list.”

It’s hard to describe the indescribable, she said.

“It’s like if a dragon and a unicorn had a baby strapped to a rocket ship. I’m so excited to be a part of this and I’m grateful for their service.” l

Courtney Wayment, the Davis High and recently graduated BYU distance runner, finished second in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships to win a spot on the U.S. world championship team.

After her collegiate-record performance in the NCAA championships two weeks ago, Wayment knocked another four seconds off her record performance in the NCAA meet – which was eight seconds faster than any collegian has ever run – finishing with a time of 9:12.10.

The world championships will be held on this same track at the University of Oregon in three weeks.

Judge issues temporary restraining order on Utah’s abortion trigger law

Physicians in Utah may continue to provide abortions for patients until at least July 11. On Monday, Third District Court Judge Andrew Stone granted a request from Utah’s Planned Parenthood Association for a 14 day TRO. He said he felt allowing the law to take immediate effect could cause “irreparable harm.

Doctors here are threatened with felonies. The affected women are deprived of safe, local medical treatments to terminate pregnancies.”

Doctors can continue to provide abortions in the Beehive State for the next two weeks, a state judge decided Monday.

Stone granted the order at the request from Planned Parenthood Association of Utah.

Incumbents dominate in Davis GOP Primaries U.S. Senate

By Tom Haraldsen tom.h@davisjournal.com This year’s primary elections in Davis County were completely between candidates in the Republican Party, which has dominated the county’s political offices for years. As of early Wednesday morning, here were the vote totals in Davis County for candidates in a number of races:

As expected, incumbent Mike Lee fought off the challenges of two Davis County residents, Becky Edwards of Bountiful and Ally Isom of Kaysville. Lee garnered 24,859 votes to 16,045 for Edwards and 4,517 for Isom in Davis County. Lee took 60 percent of the votes statewide.

U.S. House District 1

Incumbent Blake Moore, seeking a second term of office, defeated Andrew Badger

and Tina Cannon in this primary, getting 14,769 votes. Badger was second at 6,712 and Cannon third at 3,363.

U.S. House District 2

Incumbent Chris Stewart moved into November’s general election with a win over challenger Erin Rider. Stewart finished with 13,781 votes to 6,329 for Rider.

A former high school football coach in Washington who was disciplined for holding a postgame prayer at midfield with his team saw his action protected by a Supreme Court ruling on Monday. By a 6-3 decision, the Court said Bremerton High School Joseph Kennedy’s prayers are protected by the Constitution’s guarantees of free speech and religious exercise, and the school board’s discipline of the coach was unwarranted.

Utah’s abortion amendments to go into effect

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com SALT LAKE CITY—There has been a lot of controversy both before and after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last week. In Utah the decision prompted the abortion trigger law that allowed S.B. 174 Abortion Prohibition Amendments to take effect on Friday.

However, Third District Court Judge Andrew Stone issued a temporary restraining order on Monday as requested by Planned Parenthood to block S.B. 174 while its lawsuit goes through the courts. It is good for 14 days.

S.B 174 was passed during the 2020 Legislative session prohibiting all elective abortions in Utah except in rare circumstances such as rape, incest or medical emergency. The bill was contingent on the court’s ruling.

“It’s always been a real challenge with Roe v. Wade,” said Senate President Stuart Adams. “Ever since it was decided upon we’ve seen different cases that have been heard around the country. It makes it difficult but Utah is not alone. We’re a part-time legislature so we decided in that legislative session we should have something in place so that if it happens we’d be ready to go.”

There was a lot of thoughtful discussion, he said. “It’s the right policy. We arrived in a very good spot.”

The legislature as a whole passed that bill, Adams said. “It was done when there was less contention than we have now. We feel fortunate that we had the foresight to do that three years ago.”

It’s an emotional issue, he said.

“There’s extreme passion on both sides.

By far the majority (of Utahns) support the Supreme Court and the trigger law.”

Some governors around the nation are pro day-after abortions, he said. “There are such extremes. I believe the majority of Utahns don’t believe in abortions.”

Adams said he has several relatives who have been adopted. “They’ve told me that they wouldn’t be here if their single mom had an abortion. We need to be compassionate, kind and caring to a mom in that position. We need policies and programs to streamline the adoption process for a child, unborn child and families who would like to adopt and can’t.”

The legislature made the right decision with the bill, he said. “There is a lot we can do to help with adoption and help mothers through the process. There are religious groups and others who want to step forward and help.”

There needs to be protection for the vulnerable who don’t have the ability to protect themselves, said Adams. “It is the right thing to do. I think the Supreme Court got it right to give protection and a voice to the most vulnerable.”

“Statistically 8.2 babies are aborted every day in Utah,” Sen. Dan McCay said in a statement regarding the restraining order.

“Sadly, Judge Stone sentenced 115 babies to death. It’s disappointing that a law meant to protect the most vulnerable, the unborn, is delayed by one judge with no support in the law. I’m confident that Utah’s abortion ban will be upheld, and we can work to support life.”

Adams said he thinks the legislature got it right with S.B. 174. “I believe the current legislation reflects the will of the people in Utah.” l

Carlos Smith, brother of D.F. Smith, manager of the Utah Fruit and Vegetable association’s market in Salt Lake and for a number of years superintendent of the Centerville First Ward Sunday school, died east a Salt Lake City hospital of blood poisoning caused by infected hair, after a 10 day illness.

He was born in Centerville to the late President William R. and Mrs. Nellie Smith and was 52 years old. He lived in the town of his birth all of his life.

Thirteen Utah men on July 1 won their wings in the corps of Aerial Axis Busters on the eve of Independence Day. The men graduated from seven advanced flying schools in the Gulf Coast Air Force training center after completing the rigorous 32 week flying schedule of 200 hours aloft and 400 hours in ground school. Among them was Lt. William S. Epperson of Kaysville.

New officers of the Farmington Lions Club were installed at a special dinner meeting at Harry’s Dutch Oven over the weekend. The men taking office included Clarence R. Sorenson, president; Norman K. Bountiful will soon have its city home paid for. The city hall, which has been in use for about 1-1/2 years, will have only $45,000 owing as soon as some financial transactions are completed.

City Manager Bryon Oberg’s written report to the city council showed a balance due on the city hall of $180,000.

The books show a surplus on hand of $135,000. The is being applied to the balance, reducing it to $45,000.

1972

A bid opening was held on June 27 for the purpose of Woods Cross Improvement District No. 1 (curb, gutter and sidewalk). Following review of three bids, it was decided to award the bid to M.C. Green Company for $38,866.80, well under the engineer’s estimate of $51,000. The Improvement District is the first of its kind in the city and will be used for sidewalk near the Five Points Shopping Center and the new Woods Cross High School.

1982

According to a group of Bountiful businessmen, the affect of a downtown mall “can be devastating.” A citizens’ group comprised of businessmen in the area between 200 and 400 North and from 100 East to 100 West have publicly vowed they will not sell their property to make room for a proposed $25 to $50 million mall. Among those on a committee in opposition to the mall proposal were Floyd Williams, owner of Jade Corp at 400 North Main; his son Steve, Bill Shanks of Shanks Floral, and Eberhard Sommer of Sommer’s TV and Service.

1992

The fate of Teenline, Davis School District’s telephone peer counseling service, is up in the air. Originally slated to close June 30, the program has been extended until August 15. And if district officials can find support from state agencies, it will remain open. Davis assistant superintendent Nancy Fleming said the line is expensive. The district figures each call costs $21.

Contract awarded for construction of Washington Park

By Tom Haraldsen tom.h@davisjournal.com BOUNTIFUL—City leaders have officially approved a proposal for construction of the new Washington Park. After months of planning and design, a contract was awarded to Launch Construction for just over $3.9 million for the new park to be built on the site of the old Washington Elementary School.

A voter-approved General Obligation Bond passed in 2020 allocated $2.5 million for park construction. The balance will come from the city RAP (Recreation Arts and Parks) Fund, monies from Davis School District which will share practice fields on the site, and a transfer from the Storm Drain Fund.

City Parks Department Director Brock Hill explained the “Base Bid” scenario the city has developed that would include minimum park facilities as part of its master plan for the site. The Base Bid includes six pickleball courts, a new restroom and storage building, a large pavilion, playground equipment and surfacing, construction of a new 105 stall parking lot along 740 South, two large and one small open grass sports fields, asphalt walking path, site lighting and modifications to the existing parking lot on the east side of the property, which served the now razed school. Landscaping is also part of the Base Bid.

The award also includes anticipated expenses for construction of a skate park, something that is “a very important part of the project” Hill said, which would add $660,000 to the bid from Launch Construction for $3,247,486.48, bringing the cost to just over $3.9 million. Even with estimated savings projected by the city engineering department, the price tag would leave a deficit of about $19,000 which the city would provide through alternative budgeting. Councilwoman Kate Bradshaw asked city officials to look at some possible funding options for that $19,000, including any available grants.

Launch Construction was one of three companies that bid on the park, but was far lower than the closest competitor. Though the company is new, many of those working with it are familiar to the city. It’s a sister company of Redd Engineering which recently completed the remodel at Bountiful Ridge Golf Course’s cafe. Principals with Launch have also worked on various other city projects, including landscaping at city hall and improvements at the Bountiful City Cemetery.

“We have looked at value engineering efforts to save money as we build this project,” Hill said. “We’ve had discussions with the proposed developer who also said they would work with us in efforts so we can hopefully realize some savings from what’s actually being built. We anticipate saving about $229,000 as we go through

this process with the park.”

One of those options would be looking at seeding rather than sodding for the grass fields, and amending the soil already on the site rather than bringing in 7,000 cubic yards of topsoil.

Hill said some construction could start almost immediately, with the goal of having the park ready to use by next summer and the fields shortly thereafter. l

RDA funding approved for Bountiful projects

FARMINGTON—It was a big day at the Davis County Jail on Monday as the facility opened a new Medical Observation Unit that replaces the current medical wing. The project started in 2020 and cost of construction was set at $8.2 million but came in under budget by nearly $90,000 in spite of the pandemic and supply chain issues. Hogan construction built the facility and Archiplex Group did the design.

“We are here to serve the community and improve the quality of life in the county,” said Davis County Sheriff Kelly V. Sparks.

“There are three reasons for the facility. First is to keep the public safe. It’s a sad reality that there are those that need to be held in a secure facility because they are a danger to society.

The second is to hold them accountable and the third is to make people better. That’s what we’re all about.”

The most important thing about the new unit is the capacity to better care for those in custody, he said. “The medical team has been handicapped. This will give them the ability to watch those who need closer attention for substance issues and withdrawal. We’re efficient with that now but this will improve care for those inmates.”

Some of the new things include two big dorm style rooms, said Sparks. “If there’s an outbreak of a communicable disease they can be quarantined in those rooms. We also have a couple of positive pressure cells for something that is highly contagious involving air droplets, etc. Inmates can be put in those cells.

They have positive ventilation with clean air coming in and potentially contaminated air going outside. It doesn’t circulate in the facility at all.”

The layout of the building gives staff the ability to observe people more effectively, he said. “There are cameras throughout the facility and also line of sight so they can see down the hall at all the cells for suicide watch or other constant care needs.”

The new unit has 33 medical observation beds and two suicide watch beds. “It’s also

got unique modern windows that let in natural light,” Sparks said. “It used to be closed off and dark. Inmates would not see the sky for a long time. Science has proven that they do better, behave better and feel better with natural light.”

The windows are secure and impenetrable, he said. “They can’t be breached but can let in light.”

Sparks said he’s also been concerned about the staff. “They’ve been working in less than ideal conditions. This creates a great workspace. I look forward to that improvement for them.”

“I’m grateful to all of you who supported the project,” said Facilities Manager Mitch Matern. “It started in 2017 as a conceptual design of what we needed out here. In 2019 we got the funds so we were ready to go and moved forward.”

It was also the height of COVID, he said.

“We met a couple of times face to face with Archiplex but then it was over Google Meets.

It’s interesting how that took place.”

hardware. “They told us we wouldn’t get it until late August but Hogan did some magical work to get the steel before it was needed. We also struggled to get workers on it but it all came together into this amazing building and to come in under budget is phenomenal.”

“Clerk/Auditor Curtis Koch has been an amazing partner,” said Sparks. “He was able to find the funding to make this come about without the need to raise taxes or get another bond.”

Although the unit has been completed, there are some things that have to happen before it is put to use. “There are a few furnishings and fixtures we’re waiting for because of supply chain issues,” Sparks said. “We have to take a significant amount of time to test our security systems to make sure everything is safe and secure. It will probably take a month to do all of those things.”

The Medical Observation Unit doesn’t increase the number of inmates, he said. “It just allows us to treat those inmates better medically. Our mission is to make individuals better when they leave than they were when they came to us.” l

BOUNTIFUL—The Bountiful City Council, acting as the city’s Redevelopment Agency, has approved funding for several downtown improvements, including an electronic message sign.

The Administration and Operations Fund used to administer RDA programs, which has an anticipated budget of $904,000 in tax incremental funds, will be coupled with existing funds and interest earnings for a total of $1,425,000.

Improvements for FY 2023 include the downtown sign, infrastructure replacement in the Main Street RDA area, extension of Main Street enhancements including sidewalks, parking improvements downtown, and possible demolition and cleanup of buildings in the RDA zone.

Expenditures will also include personnel, operating costs (materials, supplies, and services) and special projects. A total of $250,000 has been budgeted for special projects for the coming year with revenues coming from a combination of Undesignated Fund Balance and new tax increment revenues.

The electronic message sign, budgeted at $75,000, will include costs for its design and construction along the Main Street gateway. Parking improvements have also been a focus of ongoing upgrades for the downtown area.

No timetable was announced for the individual projects which will be completed during the fiscal year that started on July 1. l

Boy injured after being hit by car

A 7-year-old boy sustained serious injuries when he was struck by a car while riding his bike in Layton Sunday evening. The accident took place in the area of 3700 North and 2550 East. The boy’s condition was not available as of press time.

Retired Captain with the Kaysville Fire Department passes away Clearfield Police investigating string of auto burglaries

The Clearfield Police are asking for the public’s help to identify this suspect involved in a string of auto burglaries east of Main Street and South of Antelope Drive on the Clearfield/Layton border.

The Kaysville Fire Department announced on Tuesday that retired Captain Steve Gunnell passed away from complications related to COVID-19.

Captain Gunnell served with the Kaysville Fire Department for 33 years, retiring in 2019. Hl also worked for the Ogden Fire Department, where he retired as a captain in 2014, according to the KFD Facebook page.

“Steve was a great asset to our community and a beloved friend of his fellow firefighters,” the post read. “In retirement Steve worked at the Davis County vaccine clinic, helping to vaccinate thousands of residents against COVID-19. We thank Captain Gunnell for his decades of service to the people of Davis and Weber counties. We share our love and condolences with Steve’s children, grandchildren, and girlfriend as they mourn this great loss.”

Injured hiker rescued from south Deuel Creek

Davis County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue were called out last week to a report of a hiker with an ankle injury up south Deuel Creek.

Teams were dispatched and worked hand-in-hand with South Davis Metro Fire to skillfully return the person to the trailhead, according to a SAR social media post. “Thanks to all the people involved for a successful rescue.”

Good Samaritans’ actions helped crews find injured woman

A woman in her 40s who was hiking the Deuel Creek trail in Centerville last week suffered a potential leg fracture. Good Samaritans were able to hike down and call for help, authorities said.

Search and Rescue immediately deployed and located the female. The woman was hoisted with the assistance of Lifeflight and South Davis Metro fire. She was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

She was rescued quickly due to accurate information given to dispatch, according to a SAR social media post.

‘Big Fish’ makes a splash at CenterPoint

CENTERVILLE—Edward Bloom is a dreamer. He tells tall tales of his epic adventures to anyone who will listen – especially his son. Bloom's wife finds it endearing, but his son Will gets impatient with his father, wondering what’s real and what’s not. That leads him on a journey to discover what drives his father’s passion even as he becomes a father himself in CenterPoint Legacy Theatre’s production of “Big Fish.”

The story unfolds with Edward (David Simon, MWF) talking of mermaids and fish leaping out of the water, putting himself in the center of the action. Fish come flying from a make believe pond below the stage as a beautiful mermaid sits on a rock. It’s all part of his fantasy world as characters come to life.

Scenes go back and forth between reality and make-believe as Edward shares his tales with Will as a boy in his bedroom and then as a man about to get married. There are also flashbacks to Edward as a teen in his hometown of Ashton where he is crowned king of the prom and dating the prettiest girl in

town.

Edward and his buddies hear of a witch that tells fortunes and they go in search of her only to be disappointed with what she has to say. However, she shows Edward his future and that knowledge guides his actions throughout the show. Janae Klumpp Gibb (MWF) playing the part of the witch, has an amazing voice as she sings to young Edward.

Along the way, Edward meets a magical cast of characters, including Karl the giant who is lonely because all the town folk are scared of him. Edward befriends him and brings him out of his cave and into the world where he gets a job in a traveling circus. Dylan Watson (MWF) as Karl is impressive on stilts, dancing and walking around the stage with ease.

The show is a mix of dancing, singing and colorful sets that recreate Edward’s storytelling. There are some unique special effects that make the story come alive.

However, Will is firmly rooted in reality and as he finds out he will soon have a son himself, he sets out to find the truth about his father. The quest puts the pair at odds and they become estranged. When Edward falls ill, his

wife reaches out to Will and he starts to see the world through his father’s eyes.

“Big Fish” is a delightful tale of optimism, hope, love and family as told by a passionate dreamer who believes life should be lived to the fullest.

‘MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU’ A TON OF FUN

B

y this point in your life, you know exactly how you feel about the Minions.

This is the fifth movie for the little yellow creatures, not including the short films and endless number of members. If you hate them, no Minions movie in the world will change your mind. If you watched “Despicable Me 3” and are still fond of them, your patience is infinite.

It turns out, however, that the Minions still have a few surprises left. “Minions: The Rise of Gru” is an unexpectedly charming entry into the series, balancing the silliness with real sweetness. Budding young supervillain Gru is back, and his early team up with the Minions delivers both mayhem and heart. All together, they make one of the best movies this series has seen since the original.

The movie follows 11-year-old Gru’s early attempts to establish himself as a supervillain. Part

of this is several run-ins with the Villainous Six, an adult supervillain group who he wants to impress. The Minions try to help, which often makes things worse and leads to a run-in with a kung fu master voiced by Michelle Yeoh.

Gru is a welcome return to the series, particularly as a supervillain. He’s nowhere close to actually being evil – most of his hijinks are a kid’s fantasy of naughtiness – but the mayhem is a ton of fun. It matches perfectly with the barely leashed chaos of the Minions, giving it just enough focus to be more interesting.

He also brings the movie just the right amount of sweetness. Young Gru may yearn to commit crime, but he’s also desperately lonely. His desire to connect, and the lessons he learns balancing friendship and villainy, make for a surprisingly lovely message.

The movie’s structure is more coherent than “Minions,” splitting into three different plot threads that come back together at the end of the movie. Though it can get a little distracted at times, the larger goal of

helping Gru is always evident. The Minions are great for laughs, but Gru is the heart of the movie.

The humor is about what you’d expect for a Minions movie, though the jokes seem to land slightly more often than usual. I laughed out loud at a handful of gags, particularly a surreal set on an airplane, and smiled at more of them. There were far too many Minion butts throughout the movie, but that’s a familiar hazard for this series. After all, kids will always enjoy a good butt joke.

In the end, the movie is still designed for kids (or adults with a healthy dose of kid still in them.) But there are good kids’ movies and not-so-good kids’ movies, and it’s important to distinguish the two.

“Minions: The Rise of Gru” has an anarchic charm that puts it surprisingly on the good side.

Who knows – it might even make you feel like a kid yourself.

Is there life on Mars? NASA sends rover to collect information about the red planet

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com HILL AIR FORCE BASE—There’s always been some mystery surrounding Mars – like little green men and Martians.

But NASA is dispelling the myths with its Mars Perseverance rover and history-making Ingenuity helicopter. NASA had full-scale models of both in STEM city at the air show last weekend at Hill Air Force Base. The models are part of the rover tour that will next be on display at the Clark Planetarium from July 8 – Nov. 10.

“The Perseverance rover landed on Mars a year ago,” said Scott Hulme, NASA Mars Public Outreach Specialist. “It’s been collecting scientific rock samples on Mars that we’ll bring back in the future.”

It landed in February of last year, he said.

“It carried a demo helicopter rotorcraft to the planet. It was a Wright brothers moment when it lifted off and took to the skies. It was a test flight to see what it can do on Mars. It can go 29 times and scout routes for the rover to travel.”

It’s dropped to the surface underneath

the rover, said Hulme. “It’s helped us know whether it is even possible to fly on Mars.

They are automated flights that pilots and engineers have programmed on Earth to fly on their own and report back. It’s the first helicopter sent to another planet.”

Material collected is stored in tubes, said Brian Clement, Mars Sample Return Program Planetary Protection Systems Engineer with NASA. “There are three types of material collected: rocks, regolith, which is loose dust and debris from rock. That's the name for soil on Mars and gas inside rocks.”

Clement said they’re learning a tremendous amount about Mars. “Its history and biosignature, past and present life and the evolution of the solar system as a whole using the best scientific equipment on Earth to maximize what we understand.”

The proposed landing site for the samples is on the base’s Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR), 100 miles southwest of Hill. “It’s the location samples have been returned to before (not from Mars),” said Hulme. The UTTR has airspace control and features a broad area of similar soil and predictable resources for a successful landing where samples are safe and

look back to the past shows some of the events and prizes being offered at the Independence Day celebration in Bountiful in 1932.

“Independence Day, July 4th, will be fittingly celebrated by the citizens of Bountiful,” the Davis County Clipper reported. “The program will begin with the break of day and continue until evening. There will be sports for all ages and appropriate prizes will be given to all successful candidates that participate in the events. The celebration is under the direction of the officers and teachers of the First Ward Sunday school. Children’s parade at 10:30.”

There were a lot of contests that year, including prizes for best boy patriotic character, best girl patriotic character, most novel group, best girl with doll buggy, best boy with toy, and best boy or girl with pet. Assistant superintendent brought out of retirement to oversee diversity and equity retires again

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—After only six months since coming back to the Davis School District, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jackie Thompson is retiring. The district made the announcement Tuesday afternoon that they would be looking for someone to fill her role.

This isn’t the first unexpected retirement from district administration. Reid Newey surprised the Board of Education and district staff in January when he announced his retirement after five years as superintendent. Newey led the district through some tough challenges with the pandemic and a Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation that found there was widespread racial discrimination throughout the district. Dr. Dan Linford was recently appointed as the new superintendent.

Thompson came back to the district in December 2021 as assistant superintendent after originally retiring in 2017. Her responsibilities included working on diversity and equity issues and overseeing what was needed to meet the requirements set by the DOJ agreement.

Since taking the post, Thompson has led efforts to: • Create an Office of Equal Opportunity, name a director, establish three district-level coordinators and hire five school-level coordinators to receive, investigate and resolve complaints of racial harassment and discrimination.

• Hire a third-party consultant, the “Safeguarding Group,” to assist the district with equity work.

• Partner with Hill Air Force Base Installation Commander of the 75th Air Base Wing Col. Jenise Carroll, Utah First Lady Abby Cox and Davis County Commissioner Bob Stevenson in community-wide efforts to increase inclusion and end discrimination and racism.

• Join with interfaith leaders across the

Wasatch Front to eliminate racial harassment in Utah.

• Strengthen the district’s partnership with the NAACP and community leaders.

• Establish a “No More, Not Here” campaign throughout the Davis School District schools in an effort to end racism, bullying and harassment of any kind.

• Assist in the creation of discrimination and harassment complaint procedures in existing school board policy.

• Facilitate the creation of central reporting and management system through which all complaints of harassment and discrimination would be filed and recorded with the Office of Equal Opportunity.

Thompson has received numerous awards throughout her career, among them an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Utah at commencement May 5.

“Dr. Thompson came out of retirement to help the district. And whenever Jackie does something, she puts her whole heart and soul into that effort, and she did exactly that during the six months she was here,” said Chris Williams, Director of Communication & Operations for the district. “She just felt it was time to return home, be with her family and do things that those who choose to retire enjoy doing.”

“We love Dr. Thompson and appreciate everything she has done for us,” said Davis School District Superintendent Dr. Dan Linford in a statement. “First, her true love and kindness for all people is a standard we all wish to emulate. Second, the dedication, hard work and care she models for all of our staff and students has been inspiring. And lastly, she has truly helped build a foundation for us to successfully move forward and accomplish the work that’s before us.”

“We thank her from the bottom of our hearts for everything she did for us,” Williams said. “She’s a fantastic person and we wish her the very, very best.” l

Farmington hosts first ever Marathon Kids AAU Pickleball Tournament in statewide Davis County program runs

By Alec Cipollini a.cipollini@mycityjournals.com FARMINGTON—With pickleball taking the nation by storm as one of the fastest growing sports in the country, young players from all skill levels competed in the West Coast Junior Olympics AAU Tournament at the Farmington City Outdoor Pickleball Courts on June 23-25.

The Amateur Athletic Union, or AAU, partnered with the West Coast Junior Olympics as they brought young athletes with different skill levels from across the United States to play pickleball in Utah.

AAU Pickleball Executive Director Mike Nielsen said that this was the second tournament that they have hosted in pickleball, the first being in Houston, Texas, last year, but he wanted the sport to be included in the Olympics as well with the rapid growth and interest.

“I wanted AAU to get into pickleball because we are known for sports like basketball and 40 other sports,” Nielsen said.

“Since it is a sport that has seen growth in popularity over the past few years with over 5 million players nationwide, I thought that it deserves to be in the Junior Olympics and AAU so young competitors could face each other.”

The tournament consisted of 174 total participants ages 8-18, with 115 who played in more than one of the many tournaments that were offered. There were singles, doubles and mixed doubles where a boy and girl would partner up and face other groups.

Round robin play was in effect as Nielsen said that everyone would play against each other and see who could go the furthest in each bracket.

“Everyone played against each other based on their skill level,” Nielsen said.

“We wanted an equal playing field where everyone is playing against each other with the same skills and nobody being substantially better than the other.”

Tournament organizer and Farmington Parks and Recreation member Linda Weeks said that since the tournament wasn’t fully recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee, she could run the competition her way and she wanted it based on skill level instead of age.

“We had started off at a 2.0 which is the equivalent of a beginner and went up by 0.5 all the way to a 5.0, which was the more advanced players,” Weeks said. “It is important for us as a part of the Utah Parks and Recreation Association to always have a round robin so that these kids can get more playing time than just playing a couple of games and being done.”

The tournament games went up to 15 points each and whoever reached the total won.

Players like sisters and Kaysville natives Emma Monson and Mary Monson competed against each other in the mixed doubles finals of the 4.0 tournament and Mary came out victorious with a 15-4 over her sibling.

After the tournaments were over for each level and format of play, medals were handed out to the first, second and third place participants or teams from the West

Weeks says the tournament was a success and everyone enjoyed playing with each other while demonstrating good sportsmanship.

“Overall, I thought it was a huge success,” Weeks said. “Players followed the rules and every game that we had was competitive. We want them to continue to play pickleball and the kids and families really enjoyed the event over the past few days.”

Farmington City donated money toward the tournament and Weeks handed out $500 in scholarships to players as an incentive to keep playing.

“With some donations that I got from Farmington City, I was able to give out some money for scholarships to those kids that never played in a tournament format

before,” Weeks said. “I think when they hear about tournaments, it brings pressure and makes them feel like they are not that good to compete. I wish it was labeled as an event so kids can have fun and have no pressure or stress when playing pickleball.”

As the success and growth of AAU pickleball has grown from around 50 players in Houston last year to 174 this year in Farmington, Nielsen said he would like to bring the tournament back to Davis County again in the future.

“I think we would love to bring back the tournament next year,” Nielsen said.

“We have grown exponentially and want to continue the growth of youth pickleball.

This tournament was great and hopefully we can have an even better one in the near future.”l

he USU Extension Marathon Kids program is offering a virtual physical activity program for the Summer of 2022.

Their goal is for youth and their families across Utah to be active and gain confidence through completing the distance of a marathon, one mile at a time.

Marathon Kids is a national program with the mission to get all kids moving.

Research shows when children take part in Marathon Kids, they have a better chance of getting the recommended amount of daily physical activity. That’s good news for their bodies and minds. When kids feel healthy, they perform better in school, think more clearly, and improve their attitude/behavior.

This program is free and all kids of any fitness level or age can take part.

You can run, walk, or do any kind of heart-pumping activity. Every mile or minute counts. If you aren’t able to officially measure your running or walking distance, you can base your mileage on time. Every five minutes of heart-pumping activity or exercise you do is equivalent to a quarter of a mile.

Youth can sign up at https://extension. usu.edu/healthwellness/marathon-kids. You can also join the Facebook Group “USU Extension Marathon Kids.” This group is designed to motivate caregivers as they encourage their children, students, or families to be active as well as a space to celebrate meeting activity goals.

There are two ways to track your miles (using the Marathon Kids digital platform or using the Marathon Kids Tracking sheets). After signing up, parents and older participants gain access to the free digital platform to track miles or minutes of activity. The paper trackers can be fun for younger children to see their progress every day as they get closer to completing a marathon.

“This is the first time that USU Extension has done Marathon Kids and we are super excited to offer it every summer as a statewide virtual event in addition to the opportunity to bring the program to each county in Utah,” Health & Wellness Professional Practice Extension Assistant Professor Emma Parkhurst said.

Parkhurst said her favorite aspect of the program is that any kind of heart-pumping activity counts toward the accumulation of a marathon, making it more inclusive than most traditional physical activity programs.

“All ages and abilities can join the program and successfully complete a marathon, 26.2 miles, worth of activity,” she said.

Parkhurst said she has been super excited about the program since learning about it last year. She said now that they are a week in and she can see participants have already completed over six marathons, she’s beyond thrilled to continue through the summer.

Although the program started on June 20, folks can still sign up any time before the end date of Aug. 20. l

Applications for Utah bird hunts open July 6

hose who wish to hunt for sage-grouse, sandhill crane, swan or sharp-tailed grouse this fall can apply for permits starting on July 6. Qualifying to hunt most bird species in Utah simply requires a regular hunting license, but there are a few bird species that require special permits as well.

Permits for greater sage-grouse, sandhill crane, swan and sharp-tailed grouse are available through the Utah hunt drawing. You can apply for permits from July 6-20 for a chance to hunt these larger, unique birds in the fall. You must apply for permits through the DWR website no later than 11 p.m. MDT on July 20. You should be notified of your drawing results by Aug. 5.

“These permits provide a unique opportunity for hunters to pursue species that aren't widely available everywhere,” Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Upland Game and Waterfowl Coordinator Heather Talley said. “Utah is one of only nine states that allows swan hunting, and sage-grouse can only be found in the western United States. It's a great chance for people to do something different and have an incredible outdoors experience.”

“It’s worth making the effort to get a special permit for these birds,” said Kevin Worthington, a resident in Centerville.

If you hunt American crows, mourning doves, band-tailed pigeons, sandhill cranes, white-winged doves, geese, ducks, coots, rails, snipes or swans, you are required to register in the Migratory Bird Harvest Information (HIP) program. It is free to register and Utah has a simple, online HIP registration process.

If you are 16 or older and you’re going to hunt any waterfowl – including ducks, geese, swans, coots, rails and snipes – you must purchase a federal migratory bird hunting and conservation stamp, often referred to as a “duck stamp.” Those stamps can be purchased at your local post office, from some license agents or by phone at 1-800-782-6724.

OBITUARIES Brenda Betenson Smith June 12, 1961 – June 24, 2022

We lost our wife, mom, grandma, sister, aunt, teacher, and friend. Brenda returned to heaven on June 24. She bravely fought multiple myeloma for the last two years. We are heartbroken by her passing and find comfort in knowing that she is with her son, William, along with her parents.

Born in Kanab, Utah, on June 12, 1961, to Wade and Joanna Betenson. Brenda spent her childhood in Fillmore and Bountiful. She was proud to be a part of the first graduating class of Woods Cross High. She attended Utah State University before meeting and marrying her husband Howard Dean (HD) Smith on Nov. 13, 1981. She graduated with a degree in Elementary Education from the University of Utah in 1984. Howard and Brenda raised their six beloved children in Kaysville.

Brenda was a lifelong teacher. Her first student was her dad, who used to play school with her as a child. She ensured her teaching certification was always current.

Brenda taught at Columbia, Sand Springs, and Creekside Elementary. Fourth grade was her favorite to teach with Utah history and the rock cycle. It broke her heart when she had to resign from teaching due to her cancer diagnosis.

Brenda maintained her sense of humor even during challenging times. While fighting cancer, she sustained her love of learning, gardening, and music. Brenda was a wonderful piano player and teacher. She was a voracious reader.

Brenda was inclusive; she helped everyone feel welcomed and loved. She always reminded her children and grandchildren to be kind. She will be sorely missed. Brenda is survived by her sweetheart of 40 years, her

children: Michelle, Becca, Josh (Hyemin), Alicia (Rebecca), and Amy, her grandchildren Sullivan Mae, Wyatt Seojun, Leo Seowon and Bodhi William, her brothers Greg (Juliann) and Bill (Liz) Betenson, sister Nancy Nina (Nathan) Long, and mother-in-law LuDean Smith. Survived as well by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son William, her parents, and her father-in-law, Bill Smith.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 1 at 11 a.m. at the Kaysville Tabernacle (198 W. Center Street). A viewing will be held prior to the funeral from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Huntsman Cancer Institute, Dr. K, and especially Grace Bissel.

Interment at Kaysville Cemetery.

William Bailey Dunford Oct. 26, 1948 – June 25, 2022

On June 25, 2022, one of the sweetest, kindest, most generous men passed away.

Our husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, Bailey Dunford, completed his battle with Parkinson’s disease with dementia.

Bailey was born to William Eugene and Etta Stowell Dunford on Oct. 26, 1948. He grew up in Holladay, Utah.

At 17 years old, he joined the Navy where he served four years. His time was spent aboard submarines; namely, the USS Queenfish, the USS Sculpin, and the USS Snook. He was always so proud of the fact that he was one of the first Utahns to stand at the North Pole. Bailey served as a “cook” on a submarine.

Bailey graduated from Utah Technical College in Drafting Design Technology and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. He worked for Chytraus Heating & AC, Holbrook Company, and Team Mechanical. In 2000 he and two partners formed North Star HVAC, which became a fast-growing, successful business. Bailey gained many friendships during his time with North Star before retiring in 2014. He was always respected for his honest business ethics.

Bailey married Jill Croxford on April 19, 1986. They had two daughters, Kelsee Leah and Kassidee Bailee. In 1995 they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple.

Bailey is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and always had a strong testimony of his Savior.

His callings mostly consisted of serving with the youth and they all loved him and maintained friendships with many of them for years.

Bailey served three missions for the Church; one six-month mission with Jill to the Farmington, New Mexico mission; a two-year mission, also with Jill, in an Ogden inner city ward; and two years in the Bishops’ Storehouse. Serving the Lord as a missionary was always so important to Bailey.

Some of Bailey’s favorite things in the world were hunting and fishing. He loved his trips to Alaska and especially loved going to Africa. But above all else, his favorite place was Saint Charles, Idaho and spending his time at the cabin.

Anyone who knows Bailey can attest to his great sense of humor and his ability to tease and be teased. He always had nicknames for people he was closest to.

His daughter Kelsee was called “Kelso Kid.” Kassidee was “Little Kiss.” To know Bailey was to love Bailey. He referred to his girls as his “Pitbulls.”

Although it is devastating to lose such a great man, knowing we’ll be with him again gives us much comfort. His mother and her “Father” and other loved pre-deceased family members have been reunit-

Bailey is survived by his wife of 36 years, Jill; his son Rick Dunford (Shauna); his son Shawn; his daughter Kelsee (Colin) Wardell; his daughter Kassidee (William) Shoemaker; his brother Rick Dunford (Beth); his sister Beckie (John) Adamson; his grandchildren Josh (Megan 2), Isaac, Megan Dunford; Brecken Shoemaker; and Lochlan Wardell. His in-laws and nieces and nephews loved and respected him.

The family wants to thank the George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home for their sweet and loving compassionate care of Bailey. The staff there truly are angels who watched over him the past four months.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 1, 2022 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5378 W. Old Hwy. Rd., Mountain Green, Utah. Friends and family may visit Friday, 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., at the church prior to services. Interment will be at the Bloomington, Idaho City Cemetery.

Q: Who plays the sheriff in “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”? The one who gets the iconic “Who you gonna call” line? I know I recognize him from somewhere.

A: Why you recognize Bokeem Woodbine depends on how long you feel like you’ve known him.

If your screen relationship with Woodbine feels new, you likely know him from the ensemble cast of the buzzy new

sci-fi adaptation “Halo” on Paramount+.

He plays a privateer and former member of the Spartan program who was on the run and now lives on the fringes of society.

If you feel like you’ve known Woodbine at least a few years, though, you probably know him as Mike Milligan from the second season of FX’s “Fargo.” That’s the season set in the late ‘70s, depicting a gang war between the local Gerhardt crime family and a larger one moving in from Kansas City.

Woodbine’s characteris a sort of enforcer for the Kansas City mob who brings a little brain with his brawn and ends up more deeply entangled with the local goings-on than he intended.

While it might be hard to pinpoint exactly from where audiences may know him, it is hard to deny that the majority of TV and movie viewers recognize John Cho. The actor, who has consistently been building his fame over the past two decades, is now due to star in Prime’s drama/ adventure “Don’t Make Me Go,” premiering Friday, July 15.

In his leading male role as Max Park, Cho showcases the awkward charm for which he has become known; this time as the single father of teenage Wally (Mia Isaac, “Lovestruck,” 2019).

When Max learns he has a brain tumor, he packs his and his daughter’s bags to head out on the road in search of Wally’s mom, who left the family years earlier. Along the way, he tries to teach his daughter everything that she might need to know over the course of her life without him.

Cho was born June 16, 1972, in Seoul, South Korea, but moved to the United States with his family at the age of 6. While his youth was fairly run of the mill — he attended Herbert Hoover High School in Glendale, California, before studying English literature at UC Berkeley — he left his teaching job in the 1990s to pursue a career in acting.

His first on-screen role (Cho also acted for famed Asian American theater company East West Players) was as Joey in the 1997 film “Yellow.” It wasn’t long, however, until this role and a string of small parts in shows such as “The Jeff Foxworthy Show,” “Felicity,” “V.I.P.” and the immensely popular supernatural dramedy “Charmed” led him to bigger fame. Of course, a small part in a little film called “American Pie” (1999) didn’t hurt, either.

Cho scored his major breakout role in 2004’s “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle,” a so-called “stoner comedy” about two friends.

It’s bioluminescence (by-oh-loo-muh-NEHS-sense)— which means the making of light by living creatures.

This deep-sea creature fishes for food. It has a long, skinny fin on top of its head that works like a fishing rod. A little bulb filled with glowing bioluminescent bacteria sits at the end of the rod.

Most of the world’s glowing animals live in the sea.

These glowing creatures live down in the inky dark, deepest parts of the sea where sunlight can not reach. Glowing body parts attract prey and scare away predators. Some fish confuse their enemies by blinking on and off while zigzagging through the water.

Others attract mates and communicate using their flashing lights.

When it wants to eat, the angler fish dangles the glowing bait in front of its mouth. A curious fish swims up for a closer look and—snap! the angler fish’s huge jaws snatch it up!

Angler fish are small, but they can be big eaters. Once, a 3-1/2 inch angler was found with a nearly 7-inch lantern fish in its stretchable stomach!
