Davis School District hires new assistant superintendent By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com

FARMINGTON—Dr. Jacqueline Thompson, a retired educator with the Davis School District, has been appointed as a new assistant superintendent to lead the work outlined by the Department of Justice investigation and subsequent settlement. Thompson will also be involved in overseeing diversity and equity issues. A two year investigation by the DOJ found pervasive and serious racial harassment and discrimination within the district following hundreds of hours of interviews. In a settlement agreement with the DOJ announced

Oct. 21, the district must comply with several requirements over the next five years. One of those requirements is to appoint a director for a new department created to handle complaints of racial discrimination. “We believe Dr. Thompson will be key in moving us in a definitive direction as we move forward in our efforts to do better for all students,” Superintendent Reid Newey said in a statement. “She is a valuable resource and someone who understands better than anyone where we need to go.” Thompson was serving as the Director of Educational Equity when she retired in 2018. In that capacity she was responsible for the District’s Parent Equity Committee, civil

rights issues, multicultural education, Respecting Ethnic and Cultural Heritage (REACH) training, the V(i)llage Program and Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID). Prior to coming to district in 2000, she taught public school in California and Idaho, worked as an Equal Employment Opportunity specialist at Hill Air Force Base and as a gender equity specialist and education specialist in the Utah State Office of Education. Thompson has received numerous awards and national recognitions during her career that include the Spirit of the American Woman Award for Public Education in 1994 and the Please see THOMPSON: pg. 5
