AJ’s Bar makes America (n dishes) great again!

BY PHONE DEPAR MIN If the very best of authentic American-style burgers, tacos and BBQs is your cup of tea, then look no further, AJ’s Bar and Grill is definitely your must visit !

Situated on the second floor of the Queens Park Hotel on the corner of Bo Myat Tun Street and Anawratha road, coming equipped with a cool brownblack décor that somehow still manages to convey a sense of friendliness, AJ’s is sure to make anyone feel at ease.

A platter of utterly delicious looking BBQ Chicken Wings came into the fray; the tenderness of the meat making up for that the chicken wings were a bit on the small side. The chickens went well with the beer. Come during happy hours 4-7 p.m. Monday-Friday for buy one get one free beer.

Next is the very highlight of AJ’s Bar and Grill. It’s BBQ Burger. Screaming “American”, by its very shape and size, AJ’s BBQ Bacon Burger ranks one of the finest in town . Chewy yet soft, crispy and cheesy, you cannot go wrong trying this delectable American Burger.

To top it off, a glass of mango margarita, a delightfully yellowish concoction was deposited onto the table, and it went beautifully with what followedthe Baja Fish Taco. A succinct appearing dish, with the tenderest meat you will likely ever crush with teeth, AJ’s Bar and Grill Fish Taco is one to die for.

It wasn’t all meat and no greens of course, and a plate of Tea Leaf Salad, also known as Lapat Thote, was purveyed. But it is no ordinary Myanmar Lapat Thote, the salad being unmixed but laid to fallow, a novel way of making Tea Leaf Salad, but with both Myanmar and foreign influences. The taste was not much different than the authentic Myanmar one.

With each dish and drink having its own story, and all cooked and assembled to near perfection, AJ’s Bar and Grill is definitely one for true American experience.

Baker Secrets: A little bit of France in Yangon

BY PHONE DEPAR MIN The décor was much like any normal bakery/café place, with the goods being set on display for the customer to choose from. Among Baker Secrets’ myriad number of baked bread are a couple of its most popular signature dishes, such as the Butter Croissant, the Kouign-Amann and the Panna Cotta Bun. The chef informed me that quality was the byword here at Baker Secrets and that they used no margarine only the most pure of butter and levain for the bread.

The Butter Croissant, a more buttery version of the croissant, is incredibly croissant-like. Meaning that the layers of bread can actually be seen- a rarity in these parts and it has the ripe crunchiness that just makes the eater just salivate for more. Coming in at just 1,800Kyats and thus being among the most expensive bread on the plate, the Butter Croissant is definitely worth your money.

The Kouign-Amann for 2,000Kyats is a pastry from the region of Brittany in France, its strangeness being that it is sold nowhere else in Myanmar, is the pure sweet butter along with that crunchiness which seems to be the hallmark of Baker Secrets is simply wonderful to get your teeth into and start munching happily away.

But it’s not all bread. With varying types of cakes available, and here are some choice desserts. The red velvet cake at 27,000Kyats is layers of chocolate, cream cheese, cocoa powder and actual red cake. The Japanese light cheesecake is one of the most popular cakes in Baker Secrets, and priced at just 15,00Kyats for a slice, is very affordable to boot. The Nutty Brownie for 20,000Kyats, filled with hazelnuts and walnuts is a particular favorite amongst locals and foreigners, the exquisite taste of both the chocolate and the nuts coming together to form the Nutty Brownie.

Most importantly, delivery service is available for downtown area.
