BATANGAS INTERNATIONAL PASSENGER PORT TERMINAL 2025

Batangas City, Philippines

+ArchitecturalDesign05StudioRepresentative/Exhibitor/Chosen workandIndustryAward,2014

+PublishedatBluPrintMagazine’sSpecialIssue022015: Architecture Educationon Jan 2015

The Batangas International Port is currently in the midst of discrimination against other international ports located both inside and outside the country as its domestic passenger and cargo terminals hardly meet the desired standards of the port. With its domestic passenger terminal being known as the second busiest passenger port in the Philippines and its cargo terminal being declared as an official extension of the Port of Manila, human and port congestion gradually becomes evident, thus, preventing economic growth in the country.

That being the case, this project proposes to create a new Batangas International Passenger Port Terminal that responds to the overutilization of the major ports in the nation, through modular based architecture. Empty intermodal shipping containers shall be integrated to the design of the international passenger terminal as a means of creating spaces that will cater to the passenger’s needs.

Overall, the project will not only be able to resolve the problems of the existing passenger and cargo terminals but it will also serve as a tourism gateway to our country, promoting cultural, economical and sociological aspects of the Philippines, most especially in the city of Batangas by the year 2025.

The project aims to address Manila’s port congestion by proposing a structure that uses container vans as building envelope. Hydraulic machines were integrated into the envelope to convey container vans, resulting into the building’s dynamic and shifting facade.

THE ART OF WASTING: A VERTICAL ART OASIS

Tondo, Manila, Philippines

+ArchitecturalDesign07StudioWork,2015

Addressing Metro Manila’s garbage problem remains unresolved in the Philippines and if not taken care of, there will be no more spaces for dump sites and the city’s residents will soon be walking on streets filled with garbage. Citing records from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, the residents of the area are said to produce about 8,700 tons of garbage daily, making them responsible for one-fourth of the country’s daily output of solid waste, and as the population grows, so is the volume of garbage that needs to be disposed of everyday.

Aside from the waste dilemma, there has been a lack of understanding and appreciation for the art industry in the country. Manila, as the capital of the Philippines, is home to most of the nation’s contemporary art scenes, but due to the fact that it is part of a third world country, not everyone is privileged when it comes to living and/or experiencing art, let alone have the knowledge to know art’s essence.

This project proposes a solution to Manila’s garbage problem while establishing a new typology that combines the treatment of waste and the creation of art for the masses, encouraging awareness of the importance of both. With the need for more compact spaces, the project aims to provide an alternative for landfills and the use of waste treatment facilities. It will also serve as a catalyst for the appreciation for art within the country.

The project will be a haven for local and international art enthusiasts and as well as a beacon that promotes the importance of art to the public with the help of art therapeutic programs that also raises awareness in the waste recycling industry. Aside from that, it will also support and promote emerging artists through exhibitions, collaborative opportunities, and temporary residencies; build sustainable artist networks, and help sustain creative forces in the area.

Students of the BS Architecture Program of De La SalleCollege of Saint Benilde Architectural Design 8 under the studio of Jim Caumeron and Ven Quizon envisions a World Exposition along the Pasig River with the whole project created as a class effort but with each pavilion designed by teams of two (2). The Cambodian Pavilion was designed by Gabriel Brioso and Mariah Concepcion.

The concept of this pavilion was extracted by fragmenting the Angkor Wat, Cambodia’s national symbol which led to exploring the idea of fractals in architecture. The whole building is a dynamic factory that produces textiles from bamboo fiber. The program is a response to the potential of the dying Cambodian art of weaving.

What comes after death?

The afterlife is a realm of uncertainty and of possibilities. Different academic fields such as neurology, psychology, psychiatry, philosophy and the like extensively deconstruct, and in their own ways, define the realm of the afterlife. Its ambiguous yet mysterious nature provides us with the opportunity to further explore intangible and unmappable landscapes that are beyond human comprehension.

Possibilian Landscapes imagines the idea of the afterlife through David Eagleman’s book on his philosophy on Possibilianism, Sum: Forty Tales from the Afterlives. It explores the possibilities of afterlife dimensions as a means of creating new spatial translations in architecture, which would eventually lead to the expounding of the discourse of the relationship between architecture and reality.

*PossibilianLandscapesisanarchitecturalundergraduate thesis submittedto the BS-ArchitectureProgramofDeLa Salle - CollegeofSt.Benilde - ArchitecturalDesign10 underthestudioofAr.VenQuizon.

04

The research work is based on four (4) mutually exclusive stories from David Eagleman’s book and were selected based on the presence of strong spatial cues in each story which would serve as a guide for the visualization process of the thesis.

(1) Giantess,

(2) The Cast

(3) Incentive; and

(4) Ineffable

In each of the explorations, the author attempted to challenge what architecture is in reality through the application of the afterlife ideology and the Possibilian theory in the construction of these afterlife dimensions. Fundamentals were questioned by its preconceived purposes, programs were fragmented and displaced, therefore forming new configurations, narratives and possible typologies in architecture; and the being of architecture was seen in a new light through its translation in a melancholic point of view.

GRADUATION THESIS MANIFESTO:

The study attempts to challenge what architecture is in reality through the application of the afterlife ideology and the Possibilian theory in the construction of these afterlife dimensions. Fundamentals were questioned by its preconceived purposes, programs were fragmented and displaced, therefore forming new configurations, narratives and possible typologies in architecture; and the being of architecture was seen in a new light through its translation in a melancholic point of view.

In a Possibilian’s perspective, architecture should be all these things at once.

There is a need for architecture to be integrated in the realm of ambiguity for it to be able to evolve in the sphere of certainty.

Architecture in reality [only] succeeds through the presence of unreality.

(3) Ineffable

The design for HB's interior is geared towards the idea of constructing a space entirely driven by floating modules and modular construction methods. Each module would highlight a work of art/jewelry which then redirects the focus on the item itself and its presence rather than the actual space.

(Individualcontribution:

Conceptualization,schematicanddesign process,pavilionconstructionand installation)

The Baguio City Creative Hub is a project that commemorates Baguio's designation as a UNESCO “Creative City” in the field of crafts and folk arts. The creative council, consisting of representatives from various sectors in the local creative economy and government, saw that there was a need to communicate and showcase the City's best creative outputs to the public to further promote Baguio’s creative community to a larger audience. Contrary to the City's recognition in one of the many fields mentioned in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, this project aims to showcase more of what it was expected to deliver by attempting to promote creativity that goes beyond artistry-one that encourages the importance of the totality of the design industry.

The team’s design process for the creative hub started with a few questions that we thought was deemed relevant in the construction of the narrative: How do we showcase the City’s identity particularly in the creative industry? How do we create an architectural manifestation of the Cordilleran culture and tradition with the contemporary context in mind? How will the synthesis of both timelines affect the place, people, and the identity and creative direction of the City?

UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES OPEN UNIVERSITY MASTERPLAN

Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines

+90DesignStudiocollaborationwork,2019 (Individualcontribution:Conceptualization, planning,schematicanddesign;andassistancewith thegraphicalrepresentationsoftheproposedplan)

The University of the Philippines Open University Campus (UPOU) is located at the edge of the university district of Los Banos and is directly accessible via Los Banos’ National Highway, which is adjacent to existing small scale commercial establishments. The campus is bordered by Maitim Creek and its location provides a vista of Mt. Makiling.

The proposal aims to integrate an abundant mix of activities and land uses into the existing campus masterplan, including community infrastructures which would take advantage of UPOU’s unique position within the UP system by rearranging structures, realigning visions, weaving into the campus the public realm, reintroducing natural landscapes, and redefining the open university as a destination for all and a place that welcomes the public domain.

08
UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES UPOU LOS BAÑOS MASTERPLAN

The proposal for the masterplan includes three (3) major zones or precincts that would provide the university with the needed facilities.

+ The public zone, which are spaces that when combined, create a progressive and productive environment for both the public and the UPLB community to enjoy. It upgrades the existing Community Hub and proposes additional spaces including a conference and exhibition Area and a retail center which will encourage tourism and support the university’s financial and economical needs. The proposed entrance setback, which can be used as a covered and open plaza will also provide areas where people can enjoy diverse activities based on their liking. Different types of urban forests will also be scattered within the bounds of the university including a Bamboo and Flowering forest, which will help improve the existing natural habitat and provide areas of contemplation and relaxation for the community.

+ The research and recreational zone, which will form an integral part of the Open University as it will house all research facilities, including a Materials Recovery Facility and a Wastewater treatment plant. A hotel and sports center that will support the activities that are to be held at the Convention Center will also be integrated as a single structure with the proposed New Media Center to create an almost crescent form that embraces the south side of the campus.

+ The central zone, which will serve as an overlap of the Academic and the Public zone. The central zone is a semi-public zone that will cater an array of activity areas such as amphitheater, parks and playgrounds, recreation, and retail. Surrounding the central zone are the densified developments of academe, hospitality, and research; thus, providing amenities and congregation spaces at the center will serve as social and gathering spaces, as well to becoming a stress escape for the tiring and busy environment of the academe.

BAGUIO CITY HALL ANNEX BUILDING PROPOSAL

Baguio City, Philippines

+90DesignStudiocollaborationwork,2019 (ProjectLead),SchematicDesignPhase

The proposal for the City Hall Annex building focuses on the interweaving of public spaces with legislative offices as means of establishing a landmark that will not only stand as a monumental establishment but will also symbolize the city’s unwavering efforts to provide spaces for the people.

The annex will be provided with a public spine, which will travel from the street level lobby area to the roof deck and will host multiple public gathering and collaborative environments including libraries, coffee shops, waiting areas, and other social spaces for all walks of life to enjoy. Furthermore, it will also replace the existing fire station building, introduce a 400-capacity parking area, and provide a Session Hall located near the street level for visual transparency despite differences in privacy levels. A public plaza and a stepped podium will also be provided on street level to encourage constant interaction between locals and the public servants; and to host events during special occasions.

The GBNB project is an attempt to rethink existing typologies on BNB spaces through the integration and introduction of collaborative environments beyond the outskirts of Baguio’s city proper. Its design iterations revolve around the exploration of the project’s existing location and its potential as a space that attracts street life and social interaction between guests and locals. Visually, it denounces architectural individuality to highlight the existing morphology of the neighborhood.

University of Baguio, Philippines

+90DesignStudiocollaborationwork,2019, Construction Phase

+Conductsitevisitsandsupervisionwork,produce schematic,architecturalplans,andconstruction drawings

Enhancing accessibility is a central concern at the Baguio Campus of the University of the Philippines, given the diverse elevations of its buildings situated on a winding terrain. The master plan proposes improved spatial and visual connectivity, along with enhanced mobility, achieved through a network of timber walkways and ramps weaving through and creating connections between existing structures. This strategy not only facilitates movement but also creates opportunities for new spaces such as decks, stepped seating, outdoor classrooms and gathering areas, as well as open-air lounges.

The specific contribution centers on the entrance walkway, diverging toward the HKP and KA Buildings, as well as the Campus Canteen. The challenge is to establish a connection among these three focus points, despite the steep terrain and to construct walkways that seamlessly integrate with the existing topography. As a result, these pathways serve not only as thoroughfares but also as resting areas, enhancing both movement and relaxation within the space.

MELANCHOLIC SUBCONSCIOUS

Melancholic Subconscious is an attempt to create two-dimensional and three-dimensional translations of a feeling that is too abstract to be described in words Melancholy.

Albeit their common nature, the artist represented each piece with individually distinctive and mutually exclusive translations of melancholic reactions towards experiences involving personal struggles, transitory events, the presence of human interaction, or the lack thereof; place, and the concept of time.

BETWEEN TWO DOMAINS:

THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE CARTESIAN COGITO

+ Art In The Park 2020 and 2021

+BaguioArtLab(KeepingApartSeries)

https://baguioartlab.wordpress.com/keeping-apart

Abstract:

Too much of today’s social fabric is faced with static noise that govern the mundane existence of day to day life, which leaves most, if not all of us with little to no attention to what lies beyond physical reality. The advent of the globalization of technology and its role in providing convenience to its users has changed our reactions toward new concepts and have contributed to the creation of hyperactive societies. In line with this observation is the coexistence of ideology and dogma two independent yet similar variables in a system that, in a certain way, help shape how we view the world yet support standpoints that could eventually lead to the misunderstanding of absolute truths.

Between Two Domains is a project that reflects the real world in its purest form one that is devoid of the established imaginary realities that govern our conscious minds through a representation of interstitial spaces influenced by Descartes’ cartesian cogito and Hegel’s determinate negation. It does not focus on predicted directions rather places a magnifier on the gray area in which it lies, which, in return, translates the space in which it exists into a solid, certain platform for uncertainty.

Between Two Domains attempts to lay the foundation to a redirected mindset that questions dogma and reestablishes awareness towards the act of demystifying false realities and preconceived ideas. Each piece is directed towards a disbelief to an ideology represented through a spatial visualization of a realm that is devoid of identity and duality a space independent of wordly biases.

“The inbetween is not a place of uncertainty. . .
It is here, in between domains, that we become truly certain.”

The in-between is not a place of uncertainty. It is here, in between domains, that we become truly certain. Between Two Domains is a project that reflects the real world in its purest form one that is devoid of the established imaginary realities that govern our conscious minds through a representation of interstitial spaces constructed through an introspective process defined by contemplative experiences during the pandemic. Between Two Domains attempts to lay the foundation to a redirected mindset that questions dogma and reestablishes awareness towards the act of demystifying false realities and preconceived ideas. Each piece is directed towards a disbelief to an ideology represented through spatial visualization of a realm that is devoid of identity and duality a space independent of worldly biases.

15 THE TRILOGY OF SAINT LAZARUS: THE HOUSE OF MEMORY

(A Zine Set on the Life and Works of National Artist for Literature Cirilo Bautista)

+Contributor;PublishedonDecember2021 in collaborationwith The Center for CampusArtofDeLaSalle - Collegeof SaintBenildeSchoolofDesignandArts

On February 2021, Benilde's Center for Campus Art released a box set of zines created by twenty-one artists, architects, and designers who interpreted National Artist for Literature Cirilo Bautista's 2001 magnum opus, "The Trilogy of Saint Lazarus." Each was assigned chapters from the epic poem, made up of "The Archipelago,” (1970,) “Telex Moon” (1981), and “Sunlight on Broken Stones” (1999.)

The zine that I worked on focuses on the dualities of language and how it can construct a spatial interpretation of a literary piece.

I intended to communicate the essence of ‘Telex Moon’ through voids and absences, font weights, random placements and orientations, perforations, the use or the absence of color, and architectural translations of texts, in a way that would not only express Bautista’s work visually but encourage interaction with the viewers as they flip through and tear certain pages apart.

Excerpts from my submission on the translation of Telex Moon (pages 85-99)
