As a parent, there are few greater gifts in life than watching your child’s curiosity kick in as they explore the world around them and really begin to thrive in their

environment. They gain more experience with new people and places, and before you know it, they are well on their way to meeting their full potential. When you have an Exceptional Family Member, however, this process is often easier said than done. Parents play a very special role in making sure Exceptional Family Members are afforded equal opportunities, but it is a difficult task to take on yourself. Enter Army Community Service (ACS)’s Multidisciplinary Inclusion Action Team (MIAT). The MIAT is made up of parents and/or guardians, a representative from the ACS Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP), an Army Public Health Nurse (APHN), and a Child and Youth Services (CYS) designee. MIAT’s goal is to determine what accommodations are required for children with special needs to be successfully placed in CYS programs. Enrolling your child into group activities, learning centers, organized sports and other events will not only encourage social development, but it will also help promote inclusion within the youth community. And with MIAT’s help, you can rest assured that your Exceptional Family Member will be given the best chance at success in any of these programs. Raising children is hard, but you don’t have to do it alone… Army Community Service is here to help. For more information on the Exceptional Family Member Program, the Multidisciplinary Inclusion Action Team, or any other Army Community Service program, call 655-4227.

The MIAT process beings with a CYS Service DA 7625-1 Health Screening. The completed form is submitted to CYS Parent Central Services and forwarded to the APHN for review and recommendations. A Medical Action Plan (MAP) and / or Special Diet Statement (completed by your child’s physician) outlining your child’s diagnosis and required accommodations may be provided to you. If it is determined that a full MIAT is necessary, a meeting will be scheduled to go over your child’s needs and any recommendations for the best environment for your child’s development. The MIAT will outline any health, developmental, physical, social, emotional, learning, or behavioral issues that may affect your child’s experience in CYS programs and will ensure that CYS staff is properly trained and equipped to allow your child to thrive.
