ACS is here to provide quality support services, various training opportunities and education to our Army community of Soldiers, Families, Civilians and Retirees stationed on Oahu. 310 Brannon Rd, Bldg 690 Schofield Barracks 655-4ACS (4227)

DEMYSTIFYING THE IEP PROCESS An important part of parenting is to ensure your children are receiving a quality education. This can often feel like an overwhelming task when transferring to a new duty station and navigating through an unfamiliar school system.

Poki’i Support (Sibling Support Class)

Sibling support for children ages 6 – 16 years old. Classes are full of fun and upbeat activities and provide an opportunity for siblings to meet friends, express their feelings and discuss experiences of being a sibling of an exceptional family member. June 1 • 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Having a child who needs educational support can make this process even more challenging. Often times, children who are experiencing challenges within the typical learning environment are given an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The ultimate goal of an IEP is to ensure a successful life after high school for a student who has special needs. In order to achieve this goal, Family Members and professionals come together to create a personalized plan that breaks down barriers within the school environment. Although each IEP is unique, an IEP must outline a child’s present level of functional performance in each subject area, list long term and short term goals, describe accommodations needed, and list positive ways to address behavioral concerns. The IEP also describes how progress will be reported. Transition planning must likewise be addressed in the IEP if the child is over 16 years old. The Army Community Service, Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) staff recognize that the Special Education system can be challenging, and we are available to assist Families with navigating the IEP process. EFMP staff can assist parents with requesting an initial evaluation for their child, and can also provide additional support at IEP meetings. EFMP wants to support parents in advocating for their child’s needs and success in the classroom.

For more information on where you can find assistance through the EFMP, visit our website at www.himwr.com or call 808-655-4ACS (4227).

Dear Tina Dear Tina, We are new to Hawaii and never lived near the ocean before. We are trying to go to the beach a lot and make the most of our time here. Our 3 year old son is a little scared of the water. How can I get him over his fear so he can have fun at the beach? Thank you, Sandy Dear Sandy, Thanks for the question and welcome to Hawaii! The beaches are beautiful here, but they can also be quite dangerous. I recommend enrolling your son in swim lessons to start working on water safety. Richardson Aquatic Safety Training Center, (AKA “Richardson Pool”), located at Schofield Barracks, is a great resource for parents and children. They not only offer swimming lessons for children age 3 and up, but provide CPR and first aid education for parents as well. For more information, call (808) 655-9698. Your son will get more comfortable with the water as he learns to swim in a swimming pool. Even so, he still may be hesitant at the beach. Water in motion can be pretty intimidating…and for good reason! Fear in most cases is a built in protection system to avoid danger. It’s a good thing! Allow him time to gradually become more interested at his own pace. He may only want to go in the water if you are holding him closely, for quite some time. That’s okay; provide him the security and reassurance he needs. Keep in mind that even after he begins to gain confidence in the water, as with all young children, he should never be more than an arm’s reach from you. I would also be very careful to choose beaches that don’t have strong currents or waves. Pay attention to posted warning signs and never swim at a beach without a lifeguard. Wishing you a fun and safe summer, Tina
