Are You Financially Prepared for the Holidays? The holiday season is just around the corner. Time for parties, decorating, traveling, spending time with family and friends, and of course, shopping. The most joyful time of the year can bring stress to many, especially when it comes to their finances. Businesses and big retailers target us with their Christmas advertising. They use social media to persuade us to buy their products and spend more each year. Because of all the pressure, it is easy to get carried away and overspend when shopping for gifts. Just keep in mind that any excessive charges in December will eventually turn into bills in January, causing financial problems for months or even years to come. Before you start your shopping, think about your past experiences with the holidays. Have you ever spent more than you wished to or could afford? Has it ever taken you more than 12 months to pay off your holiday expenses? Have you ever done all of your holiday shopping in one expensive last-minute trip to the mall? Here are some tips on how to make this coming holiday season stress-free: Make

a list - List all the people you would like to buy gifts for and also plan for food, decorations and for parties. Develop a Budget - Once you have decided who you want to buy gifts for, plan on how much you can afford to spend on each person. Don’t forget to include decorations, food and parties. Stick to your budget - This takes some discipline, take the list with you when going shopping. Shop with someone who can help you stay on track and avoid overspending. Get started early - Don’t wait until the last minute; good deals are often available before the official holiday shopping season starts. Start planning for next year - Holiday financial planning continues even after the holidays end. Take the time to note which strategies were effective in helping you stick to your holiday budget and start saving for next year’s expenses. Add up what you spent this year and divide that amount by 12; this is what you will need to put into a savings account each month to be ready for next year’s holiday season. The Army Community Service Financial Readiness Program “Budgeting for the Holidays” class provides more tips on how to develop your budget. Accredited Financial Counselors are available to assist you develop a plan and have a memorable and stress-free holiday season. For more information, talk to a financial counselor contact ACS at 655 4ACS.

Dear Tina Dear Tina, I’m trying to figure out what kind of toys to get my kids for Christmas. I have a two year old and a four year old. What do you suggest? Signed, “Mrs. Claus” Dear “Mrs. Claus”, With toys so heavily marketed to us on television and in stores during the holidays, it can be a little overwhelming. Parents can feel pressure to make sure their children have the latest and greatest of everything. Try to stay focused on what is age appropriate for your children in the areas of safety and development. Avoid toys with small parts which can be choking hazards. Often times the packaging will indicate the appropriate age range for the toy. It’s wise to follow that guidance. Many children enjoy opening gifts, however they often want to play with the box instead of the expensive gift inside! It just goes to show that spending a lot of money isn’t necessary to make children happy. Preschool age children benefit from activities which encourage growth in motor skills, like learning to throw, catch, and kick a ball, or jumping over a jump rope (held stationary). Coloring books and crayons help with fine motor development. Social learning is encouraged through pretend play like caring for a doll and playing “dress-up”. Playing easy games together can help with learning to take turns and sharing. Building blocks and puzzles help with problem solving. Reading with your children helps to build communication skills and a love for learning. Remember, whatever toys you choose, spending time playing with your children is what matters the most! Best wishes, Tina
