Dear Tina, I have two children, a 6 year old, a 3 year old, and a new baby coming very soon. I am starting to feel worried about how I’m going to manage everything when my son is back in school and has practice after school and homework. I’m not sure how to fit a new baby into our busy lives without letting my other kids down. It’s been pretty easy this summer, but I feel like chaos is coming. Do you have any tips? Sincerely, Anxious Andi

Dear Anxious Andi, Sometimes it’s hard to imagine how things will all work out, but somehow they usually do. What I would suggest can be summed up, for the most part, in two words: routine and collaboration. If you haven’t had a chance to build a support system of friends here yet, I would make that a priority ASAP. You can usually find other parents who are more than willing to take turns driving the kids to school and other activities. Also, establishing good routines for the whole family is extremely helpful. Have a regular morning routine, homework time, meal times, bath time, and bedtime routines and divide the responsibilities with your husband. If you aren’t already, you will become an expert at multitasking, but you will need some time to focus on your new little one as well. It’s a good idea to start practicing your home routines before school starts and baby arrives, to make the transition smoother. Talk with the kids about how life is about to change, and try to include some one-on-one time for each of the kids in your regular routine. You may also want to make sure all three children are registered in Child and Youth Services (CYS), so that you may utilize the variety of child care options if the need arises. You can reach them at (808) 655-5314. Also, please feel free to call us here at the New Parent Support Program at (808) 655-4227 for more support and assistance, and join us for Play Mornings, for 0-3 year olds, every Wednesday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 a. m., here at ACS. Best Wishes, Tina
