HARRIS RESIDENCE EKDNYC Tribeca, New York City

Apartment Combination 2,500 sq. ft. $750,000 Space planning, finishes selection, construction oversight, and furniture design.

The Harris Residence project entailed combining two apartments, a 1br/ 2bath and a 2br/2bath into a 2br/2½bath. The original space was divided with a diagonal wall which added some disfunction to the space. We began with the space planning phase, when it was decided to move the Master Bedroom to the other side of the combined apartment. This was done to take advantage of the awkward space along the diagnal hallway wall and put the Master Bedroom on the quieter side of the apartment. The client’s aesthetic sense could be defined as mid-century modern with an emphasis on natural materials and a weathered patina. This led us to preserve much of the distressed wood flooring and original tin ceiling, where some patching was needed in the areas where the demising wall was located. We incorporated a matching bamboo floor into the newly designed spaces like the Office and the Master Bedroom. We also used a end-grain mesquite block and poured concrete floors to define circulation and the kitchen. These touches with a modern high-gloss kitchen in light cream makes for a space that communicates with the contemporary while preserving some of the character of the original space and materials.
