HARRIS RESIDENCE EKDNYC Tribeca, New York City

The Harris Residence project entailed combining two apartments, a 1br/ 2bath and a 2br/2bath into a 2br/2Â˝bath. The original space was divided with a diagonal wall which added some disfunction to the space. We began with the space planning phase, when it was decided to move the Master Bedroom to the other side of the combined apartment. This was done to take advantage of the awkward space along the diagnal hallway wall and put the Master Bedroom on the quieter side of the apartment. The clientâ€™s aesthetic sense could be defined as mid-century modern with an emphasis on natural materials and a weathered patina. This led us to preserve much of the distressed wood flooring and original tin ceiling, where some patching was needed in the areas where the demising wall was located. We incorporated a matching bamboo floor into the newly designed spaces like the Office and the Master Bedroom. We also used a end-grain mesquite block and poured concrete floors to define circulation and the kitchen. These touches with a modern high-gloss kitchen in light cream makes for a space that communicates with the contemporary while preserving some of the character of the original space and materials.

Below are images of the Master Bathroom, which was designed around the clawfoot bathtub. The steam shower was designed using all black marble tiles (mini-brick on the walls, 2â€? hexagons on the floor and a marble slab for the integrated bench). A custom designed vanity with marble top ties the design together.

The von Zelowitz Residence project entailed combining two apartments, a 1br/1bath and a 2br/2bath into a 4br/3bath. For this expanding family, we decided to divide the space into public and private, where there was a clear distinction made between sleeping quarters and living space. We decided to expand one of the original kitchens to make a grander kitchen with custom cabinetry and a 3â€? butcher block counter top and bar that opens into the dining and living rooms. The expansive living space gives this New York City apartment the feel of a suburban home.

Below are images of the Kitchen with its 3â€? end-grain walnut butcher block counter top. All custom cabinets made it possible to create exactly what the family needed. A herring-bone pattern in the white subway tile backsplash helps create some visual texture.

After designing a dining room table for the Balik family, they commissioned me to make a coffee table and dining table extension table. They also hired me to design the renovation of their two bathrooms. Below are some images of the new Master Bathroom, inspired by the seashore. One wall of the new Master Bathroom is an image printed on glass of the shore.
