THE MESABI east to west Hibbing Hibbing is the largest of the Mesabi communities, and is the former home of music legend Bob Dylan, basketball great Kevin McHale, and baseball player Roger Maris. Birthplace of the renown transportation company Greyhound Bus Lines, Hibbing is also the location of one of the world’s largest open pit mines – the Hull Rust Mine View, accessible from the Mesabi Trail. Visit Hibbing’s outstanding parks, including Carey Lake with a public beach, boat launch, fishing piers and hiking trails, and be sure to explore historic downtown.

Chisholm Chisholm (pronounced Chiz-olm) is a community of around 5,000 that’s built, in part, around the lovely Longyear Lake. This historic hotspot hosts the Minnesota Museum of Mining, and the Museum of the Iron Range: Minnesota Discovery Center. A memorial to all branches of military veterans can be found here, along with the famous Bridge of Peace and the iconic Iron Man Statue. Chisholm is known as the site of festive events like the Chilly Open, Doc “Moonlight” Graham Days, and the St. Louis County Fair.

Buhl Just down the road from Chisholm, Buhl’s (pronounced Bewl’s) claim to fame is the “finest water in America,” bottled water from deep aquifers in this hard rock region. A small campground is just stone’s throw from the scenic and clean Stubler Beach, accessible on the Mesabi Trail.

Mountain Iron Mountain Iron, birthplace of the Mesabi Iron Range iron ore industry, thanks to the Merritt family. Today, Mountain Iron flourishes with retail and new housing. West Two Rivers Campground is a municipal site with a beach, fishing docks, playground, pavilion and disc golf course. Celebrate this city’s achievements at the annual Merritt Days celebration, held every August, with fun, games and music for everyone.

Virginia The Queen City of Virginia sits at the intersection of Highways 53 and 169, and as a result, is a retail and entertainment hub, with a variety of shopping, dining, and a great municipal golf course. Learn about this city’s logging and lumbering history at the Heritage Museum near historic Olcott Park and the Olcott Park Greenhouse. Virginia’s main drag is home to the Lyric Center for the Arts, a former opera house being lovingly restored to showcase area art and artists of all stripes.

Soon, this city will be the site of the state’s tallest bridge.

Eveleth Eveleth is the home of hockey, as evidenced by the country’s largest hockey stick right in the middle of downtown, and the US Hockey Hall of Fame Museum along Hwy 53. This mecca to the sport is a must-see for all visitors, hockey fans or not! Also not-to-be-missed is Eveleth’s legendary Fourth of July celebration, the tallest manmade point in the area, Leonidas Overlook, and, for campers, Veteran’s Park Campground with swimming beach, fishing areas and wooded slots. The Mesabi Trail connects the city with the campground.

Aurora The friendly town of Aurora is just a hop, skip and jump from Giants Ridge. Stop for a bite at the cafe, restaurant or drive-in on main street. ATV trails connect Aurora to Biwabik and neighboring Hoyt Lakes, and offer a scenic wooded route to explore. Snowmobile trails lead from town to just about anywhere in the northeast part of the state; dedicated clubs take care of their trails! Look for events at the Sportsmans Club, with rifle and archery ranges. Each year, enjoy Patriotic Days in July, and Pumpkinfest the second Saturday in October, with food, games, wagon rides and pumpkins for all.

Hoyt Lakes The entry point for the Superior National Forest Scenic Byway, Hoyt Lakes is home to the lovely Fisherman’s Point campground and recreation area on Whitewater Lake, plus a beach on the adjacent Colby Lake. With hunter walking trails. ATV and snowmobile trails, fishing, and the fabulous Hoyt Lakes Water Carnival every year, the city is a fun place to be in any season! Take in sweeping views at Skibo Vista, and make plans for a motorcycle ride to Lake Superior on that Byway (Forest Highway 11). See the Iron Rangers junior league hockey team play while you’re there!

Gilbert Site of a scuba hot-spot in the clear-watered Lake Ore-Be-Gone, the city of Gilbert has another claim to fame at the edge-of-town Iron Range Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area (AKA The OHV Park). This is a riders’ paradise for ATVs, Jeeps and OHMs, with scramble areas, mud pits, and trails of all difficulty levels. The Mesabi Trail runs alongside the reclaimed mine lake and the popular Sherwood Forest Campground, headquarters for the annual ScubaPalooza and Ride for a Cure Jeep event. A number of great restaurants and bars line the main drag.

Embarrass Deep in the pines along the Embarrass River lies a Finnish community of the same name. Embarrass is home to a people who treasure their heritage and the nature that surrounds them. Learn about their history on a Finnish Homestead Tour, and visit the Nelimark Homestead Museum for Finnish treats and to hear a few words spoken in that language. On a starry night here, you’ll understand why immigrant farmers made their home here more than a century ago. Enjoy this city’s hospitality at the annual Embarrass Region Fair, and the Ice Candle and Holiday Gathering.

Biwabik Biwabik is the Bavarian-themed town that greets visitors to Giants Ridge Resort with two award-winning golf courses and acclaimed ski area, plus trails, lakes, lodging and dining. With the Mesabi Trail connecting the community to Giants Ridge and Vermilion Trail Campground on Embarrass Lake, this scenic city is a destination any time of year. Visit during the Fourth of July for the popular Calthumpian Parade, and come back the first Saturday in December for Weihnachtsfest, with fireworks, delightful music and food, and sledding.

Museums of the Mesabi Lyric Center for the Arts and First Stage Gallery The Lyric is a 1912 opera house designed by Ellerby, Round and Sullivan.

Hibbing Historical Society Museum Permanent and changing exhibits tell the story of Hibbing’s past, from its’ settlement in the 1890s to its’ famous move 1919-1921. Other exhibits examine highlights of each decade, local industry and more.

Heritage Museum Located in Olcott Park, and operated by the Virginia Area Historical Society, this museum includes the former park superintendent’s residence, a Finnish log house, and a 1930s tourist cabin, full of exhibits.

Minnesota Discovery Center Minnesota’s museum of the Iron Range celebrates the land, the work, the people and the mines of northeastern MN through exhibits, events and activities. Ride a vintage trolley to a mining ghost town; play miningthemed mini-golf. Research library is a premier destination for those seeking genealogy and historical information.

Minnesota Museum of Mining

US Hockey Hall of Fame Museum

This indoor/outdoor museum tells the stories of the men and women who made a life on the Iron Range, especially the Chisholm area, through displays, vintage equipment and more.

Hours/Admission: Memorial Day to Labor Day, Mon-Sat 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1-4 p.m. Admission ranges from $4 to $6; children under 5 admitted free.

This national shrine to American hockey honors the legends of the sport, and preserves and interprets America’s hockey history through professional exhibits and displays.

Nelimark Homestead Museum Find the oldest unaltered buildings in Embarrass, plus two saunas, a farm home, and playhouse. Don’t miss the exhibits, a guided nature walk Thursdays at 3 p.m., and Friday “Finn talk” with treats.

Soudan Underground Mine State Park Experience the life of a miner as you travel 3/4 –mile underground to the last and deepest area of this historic mine. Knowledgeable guides make this 1.5-hour tour a “must-do” in northern Minnesota!

Tours Hibbing Taconite Tour Hibbing Taconite, a working mine, on designated days in summer only or by special request for groups. Typically offered on Thursdays in late June, July and through early August, this tour is not to be missed.

Road Side Stops The Big Stick (and puck!)

See America’s largest hockey stick and puck on Grant Street in Eveleth.

Located in Hockey Plaza, the stick is surrounded on two sides by hockey history displays.

Bob Dylan’s Childhood Home Located on the corner of Seventh Ave East (Bob Dylan Drive) and 25th Street in Hibbing, this modest home housed the Zimmerman family throughout Bob’s formative years. Not open to the public.

Honk the Moose

Iron Man Presiding over Hwy 169 in Chisholm, the miner, Iron Man, stands 36-feet tall on top of his 45-foot base, and is one of the largest free-standing statues in the country.

Longyear Drill Site Located three miles north of Hoyt Lakes on County Road 110, this 1890 drill site is commemorated for being the first to advance iron ore exploration with the use of a diamond drill bit. Short nature walk leads to site.

Mountain Iron Park Train lovers will want to stop here for the Baldwin 1910 steam locomotive and other mining equipment located near the site where iron ore was first discovered on the Mesabi. Find this park on Locomotive Street in Mountain Iron.

Eli Wirtanen Farm This historic farmstead is being lovingly preserved by the Friends of the Wirtanan Pioneer Farm. Visit the site to view the farm, main house, and sauna. Call 218-638-2859 for guided tour.

Legend House Museum Created by the Bois Forte Band of Ojibwe on the shores of Lake Vermilion, and winner of a National Media Association award for interpretation. About 50 miles from the central Mesabi Range communities.

Virginia City Park and Mesabi Trail trail head just off of Third Street North (east end) with a view of the inactive Rouchleau group of mines, nearly three miles long, a half-mile wide and 450 feet deep. Open year round. Free admission.

There’s also a huge variety of wildlife, which makes the Mesabi Trail one of the best ways to experience the Range.

Everybody has their own definition of camping. Some love to rough it out in the wilderness, while others would rather have access to as many amenities as possible. Well, we’ve got it all. So whatever your preference, you’ll find the perfect campsite up on the Iron Range.

Area Beache Stubler Beach: This spring-fed mine lake* is a beauty!

Right on the Mesabi Trail, it’s the perfect swimming hole for cooling off. Located in Buhl, this beach is clean, sandy and comes with changing rooms, a pavilion and a great view.

Birch Cove Beach: On scenic Colby Lake in Hoyt Lakes, this beach is equipped with a picnic area, boat launch, playgrounds and a lifeguard on duty daily, mid-June through mid-August.

Carey Lake: Beach with changing house, pavilion, picnic areas, fishing pier and awesome trails. Find this little gem in Hibbing just a few miles off Highway 169.

Vermilion Trail Campground Beach: The lifeguard is on duty at this lovely beach on Embarrass Lake in Biwabik. Rent canoes and kayaks from the campground hosts to experience even more of this charming lake visible on Hwy 135 near the entrance to Giants Ridge.

hes & Lakes West Two Rivers: Mountain Iron is home to this reservoir that once was a water source for Minntac but has been reclaimed as a recreation area with campgrounds, playgrounds, pavilion, boat launch, beach, ball field and disc golf course.

Lake Ore-Be-Gone: Take a dip in the clear mine lake waters of Lake-Ore-Be-Gone in Gilbert. Enjoy the beach, boat launch, and bicycle trails, all onsite along with Sherwood Forest Campground. These waters are so clear, the lake is popular with scuba divers.

Veteran’s Park and Campground: On Ely Lake, just off Highway 53 in Eveleth, find this scenic lake with beach, picnic area, campsites, playground and pavilion.

With over 240 species of birds, including the Great Gray Owl, the Boreal Owl and the Northern Hawk Owl, the Sax-Zim-Bog Wildlife Management Area is in the top 100 birding locations worldwide, and has some of the best wildlife viewing in the Midwest. It’s 200 square miles full of everything from pine forests, to prairies, to white-pine bog, and it is teeming with animals and incredible beauty. There are even several strategically placed bird-feeding stations visible right from the road.

Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area Gilbert is home to Minnesota’s first off-road ATV/OHV park. It’s got 36 miles of awesome trails for everything from dirt bikes to jeeps, all loaded with twists and turns as well as scenic overlooks. The wide variety of terrain means you can catch air at high speed or just sit and do donuts all day in a scramble area. If you’re ever feeling like you can’t push your vehicle to the limit, ride the Range.

The Iron Range is a paradise for snowmobilers. Take your sled clear from one end of the Range to the other and access more than 2,000 miles of groomed and fully signed trails. With few distractions like roads and driveways, you can ride faster and further while riding safer. There are also plenty of places to stay, gas up, grab a bite and be on your way. To top it all off, the 100" average snowfall and amazing scenery makes snowmobiling on the Iron Range one of the most exciting ways to get around.

Rent a sled If you don’t own a snowmobile, it’s still easy to hit the trails. Rapid Rental & Supply in Hibbing and Virginia can bring the sled straight to you. If you’re over 18, are snowmobile certified and have a valid driver’s license, you can rent for just a few hours or all week.
