NOTE FROM OUR DIRECTOR The Mystery of Edwin Drood is one of the most exquisitely theatrical pieces I’ve had the pleasure of exploring. Based on Dicken’s final, unfinished novel, Rupert Holmes has devilishly devised nearly 50 permutations of the ending of the play as voted on by the audience. As if live theatre wasn’t already rife with enough variables, the cast and orchestra must now contend nimbly with the foibles of the crowd. How terrifying! How fun!

Beyond the unique convention of voting, the musical is an anachronistic romp through the history of musical theatre, with snippets of opera, soft-shoe, kickline and patter song woven throughout. Set in the tradition of a late-Victorian melodramatic musicale, Drood (as it is colloquially known) is positively indulgent in its celebration of all things THEATRE! After a year and a half (and counting) of varying degrees of isolation, the notion of a play that provides such opportunity for the human element of performance was irresistible.

For my part, I’m just lapping up the purity of play. Each night, we are piling into our metaphorical sandbox — cast, music directors, musicians, choreographers, stage managers, designers, technicians and all — and creating moments together. I get emotional when I think about the level of commitment each person puts into a theatre production. But I guess we need that humanity too, yeah?

Anyway, enjoy our play. We’ve worked hard on it so you can relax and enjoy. But don’t relax too much, you might end up part of the show!

CREATIVE TEAM Le s l i e S t a m o o l i s , T h e a t re Program Director, Costume Designer (she/her) Leslie Stamoolis is a designer, technician, and educator who has designed and built costumes in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, California, and Washington. She holds an MFA in Costume Design from University of California, Irvine, and an MA in Theatre from Miami University of Ohio. Recent projects include wig/hair/makeup design for Inland Northwest Opera’s Orfeo ed Euridice; costume design of the world premiere of Variations on a Theme choreographed by Kyle Davis with Gonzaga Dance; and costume design of Ripe Frenzy at Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA. Leslie is an associate professor and Theatre Program Director at Gonzaga University.

Jadd Davis, Director (he/him)

Henry McNulty, Co-Musical Director

Jadd Davis holds an MFA in Theatre and a Grad Certificate in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies from the University of Montana, where he won the coveted Bertha Morton Scholarship for his practical research into vocal technique and expression of self. Based primarily out of Seattle, Jadd led a long and varied career as a professional theatre artist, appearing on most of the major musical stages in the northwest. Jadd is happily married to the love of his life, with whom he has two amazing children!

(he/him) Henry McNulty is a Spokanebased musician, composer, and actor, serving as Music Director at Spokane Civic Theatre since 2017.

Onstage, he has performed at Civic, Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre, The Modern - Spokane, Lake City Playhouse, and elsewhere. Notable roles include Jerry Lee Lewis (Million Dollar Quartet), Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (Young Frankenstein), Smudge (Forever Plaid), and Robert (Boeing Boeing).

Tonya Ballman, Co-Musical Director

(she/her) Tonya Ballman was born and raised in the Spokane area, and holds a BM in Piano Performance from Eastern Washington University. She has worked with the Spokane Civic Theatre since 2017 as a pit musician and assistant music director. She’s pleased to make her music directing debut with The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Tonya is also a film score composer, singer/songwriter, and teacher of contemporary band at the Salish School of Spokane. She would like to thank her Co-MD, Henry McNulty, for his support and mentorship.

(he/him) is delighted to be a part of the Gonzaga Theatre and Dance Department! In addition to teaching at GU, Joseph also serves on the faculties of Artistry in Motion and Expressions School of Performing Arts. Favorite directing/ choreography credits include: Mamma Mia, Curtains!, and Smokey Joe’s Café. His next project will be directing Something Rotten at Whitworth University. B.M. (she/they) Claire is a senior at Gonzaga getting a BA in Theatre Arts with a technical concentration, and serves as Vice President of Theatre Council.

Their past stage management credits include Antigone and Romeo & Juliet at Gonzaga and Twelfth Night at Spokane Ensemble Theatre. They look forward to continuing their stage management career following graduation in the spring. Welcome back to live theatre and enjoy the show!

(he/him) Coming from Ottawa, Illinois, Luke earned his BA in Music Technology and MFA in Theatre Sound Design and Technology, both from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Being a musician and actor himself, he strives to help others put on the best possible performance at all times.

He has worked at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on the UIUC campus, as well as Hope Summer Repertory Theatre and the American Dance Festival. Aside from Audio, Luke enjoys reading, playing board games, and playing ukulele for his chinchilla(s).
