Celebrating MWL’s

Long Serving Staff

One year of MWL

What a year it’s been for Team MWL!

Monday 1st July 2024 marked 12 months since we became Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and what a year it has been!

After a lot of hard work, we finally achieved our goal of becoming One Team, One Trust, and since that day Team MWL has continued to build on the Trust’s vision to provide 5 Star Patient Care to all those within our local communities.

As work continues across the organisation to align services and establish MWL as one of the best in the country, there have already been many benefits realised for both patients and staff, and there have been some incredible highlights along the way. Here's just some of them:

Launch of Trust Objectives 24/25

The new 2024/2025 Trust Objectives were launched at the Start of Year Conference by Chief Executive, Ann Marr OBE in April. These objectives enable us to move closer to delivering our 5 Star Vision, and every member of staff has a part to play in helping us to achieve them.

Top Staff Survey Results

In our first national NHS Staff Survey as one organisation, MWL was named best acute Trust to receive care in the North West, with it being ranked amongst the highest in the region for staff engagement and morale.

All Good Things for our Maternity Units

Both maternity units at Whiston and Ormskirk hospitals were rated ‘Good’ in their latest CQC inspections in April. Whiston’s unit maintained its rating across all standards, and Ormskirk’s rating improved from its last inspection in 2017.

A night of stars at the first ever MWL Staff Awards

The very first MWL Staff Awards were held in May, with over 1,300 guests attending the Liverpool Arena to celebrate and honour teams and individuals for their outstanding care and service to patients. And what a night it was – we can’t wait for next year!

We recognised exceptional commitment at the Long Service Awards

With over 2,700 years of service between them, we said a very special thank you to 100 staff members who have dedicated their careers to the Trust. Long Service Awards were presented to staff who hit the milestones of either 25 or 40 years continuous service over the last 12 months. Find out more on pages 8 and 9.

Building a bright future!

During the last 12 months, significant investment in our estates has seen both patients and staff benefit greatly from our ongoing improvement works taking place across MWL. New theatre and diagnostic suites are being built, ward kitchens, bathrooms, flooring and office spaces have been renovated, old wiring and fire doors have been replaced, and parking facilities improved – the list goes on! You can find out more about developments across MWL sites on pages 4 and 5.

One year of MWL

Launching our new Trust values

April 2024 marked the launch of our first ever MWL Trust values.

Over a six-month process of engagement, we asked staff from across the Trust their views on what they think Team MWL stands for. Together we created the new MWL values: 'We are KIND', 'We are OPEN' and 'We are INCLUSIVE'.

A massive thank you to everyone who took part in one of the Big Conversation sessions, whether in person, on Teams, or by sending in your thoughts and suggestions. You have all played a part in creating the essence of MWL.

We believe these values represent Team MWL perfectly, and they will be the foundation of how we work together as a team to deliver our overall Trust vision of 5 Star Patient Care.

We want our patients and their families, no matter which service they visit, to recognise the MWL way

receiving the best care possible, every time.

The new Trust values are now being displayed in all of our wards and departments, alongside our Trust vision posters.

Staff Engagement sessions

Another first for MWL has been the introduction of our fantastic ‘Monday Marketplaces’. We want to do all we can to ensure that MWL is a great place to work, so we created a one stop shop covering Health, Work & Wellbeing, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion, Staff Recognition, HR Support and Learning & Organisational Development.

Whether you are new to the Trust or have been working here for several years, each stall has dedicated staff experts on hand to have a chat or answer any specific questions staff may have - such as what benefits can I access, how do I submit a flexible working request, where can I recognise a colleagues’ achievements or what health & wellbeing offers are available to me.

A big thank you to all staff who have visited the marketplaces across our hospital sites. Here is just some of the excellent feedback we’ve received:

“I thought the event was very interesting. I’ve been able to easily visit the stalls suitable for me and gather lots of information about what’s on offer for staff at the Trust”.

Julie Weldon – Healthcare Assistant

“The marketplaces were useful and informative. I was able to visit the teams I wanted to see and ask the questions I needed help on. I wanted to know about enhancing my skills so being able to speak with the Learning & Organisational Development Team was extremely helpful”.

We’re looking at the best way of taking our marketplace online / on-tour for those who are not based at our hospital sites, with sessions happening throughout the year. So watch this space and keep an eye on our usual Trust channels for further details!

What a start we’ve had - and we haven’t even mentioned the many team and individual awards that Team MWL have won or been nominated for over the past year!

Working within the NHS is not without its challenges, but your hard work is never taken for granted. Thank you for your commitment over the last 12 months Team MWL, here’s to a very bright future for our staff, our patients, and our local communities.

One year of MWL Spotlight on: Improving our estates and facilities

Significant investment has been made in our buildings and environment over the last 12 months, and wherever you work or visit, you’re sure to have seen building works springing up at many sites across MWL.

Its thanks to our fantastic Estates and Facilities Department, and all those involved in the projects, that so many new developments can take place at the same time.

Providing safe, secure and high-quality buildings to improve the experience of patients, visitors and, just as importantly, our staff, is a key priority for the Trust.

So we’re shining a spotlight on some of the most recent projects that are already making a positive difference to life at MWL.

Updates and improvements for Security and Informatics

Many of the improvements across the Trust so far have been carried out behind the scenes. Vital improvements to security systems and external lighting, and wholescale renewal of the IT infrastructure at Southport and Ormskirk hospitals has taken place mostly out of sight, but all are extremely important in ensuring that we have secure environments for our patients and staff.

New Trust Offices unveiled at Southport Hospital

It’s been a long time coming, but the new purpose-built Trust offices have been unveiled at Southport Hospital. The old Corporate Management Offices have been transformed to provide both clinical and non-clinical staff with a modern working environment, including offices, break-out rooms, and private meeting spaces.

Chief Executive, Ann Marr OBE, officially opened the refurbished office suite by thanking the Estates and Facilities Team for all their hard work, vision and skill saying it was extremely impressive how they had managed to create such an amazing space for staff.

New Theatre Suites at Whiston Hospital

Whiston Hospital is now home to two brand new additional theatre suites, making a grand total of 18 theatres within the hospital. This not only allows us to treat more patients each day, it also means that we can perform more complex surgical procedures too. The theatres have been kitted out with all the latest high-tech equipment, with finishing touches being put in place ready for the first operation to be performed in the new suite by the end of Summer 2024.

One year of MWL

Brand new Endoscopy suites at Southport and Ormskirk

Work is continuing at pace to transform Endoscopy services at two of our sites. A new multi-purpose modular building will soon be completed at Ormskirk Hospital. This new clinical space will initially house the Endoscopy Service whilst their current unit is refurbished, with the long-term plan for the space to become the permanent home for the Ophthalmology Service.

Meanwhile, work is well under way at Southport Hospital with the foundations in place and steel work commencing on a new purpose-built Endoscopy Centre. The new facilities will help to develop first-class Gastroenterology services for all those living in the local community.

Improved road access at St Helens and Whiston hospitals

Parking for both patients and staff is always high on the agenda at our hospitals, and this summer work has begun to improve access to our car parks. At St Helens Hospital, a new access road has been built enabling staff directly into the car park behind Horton Lodge, rather than driving through the service yard, and at Whiston Hospital a new slip road will ease traffic congestion at the front entrance to the hospital, with a dedicated entry to the disabled car parking spaces.

Brand new Physiotherapy Outpatients Unit at Ormskirk Hospital

Work is gathering pace, transforming the old Clinical Education Centre at Ormskirk Hospital into a dedicated Physiotherapy Outpatient Unit, transforming how services are provided to our patients. The unit will include 18 treatment spaces and a purpose-built gymnasium.

Solar panels installed at St Helens Hospital

The Trust has an extensive Sustainability Plan that sets out the actions the organisation will take over the coming years to improve its environmental sustainability. As part of the plan, an incredible 524 solar panels have been installed on the roof of St Helens Hospital, helping to make the hospital more energy efficient and reducing its carbon footprint.

Improved kitchen and bathroom facilities at Southport & Ormskirk hospitals

And last, but certainly not least, the kitchens and bathrooms for both patients and staff, within all wards at Southport and Ormskirk hospitals have had a makeover, making for a much better environment for all!

5 Star Care delivered by 5 Star Nurses

It was a landmark moment for our fabulous nursing staff here at MWL this summer, as colleagues came together for the first ever Trust-wide nursing conference at Edge Hill University.

Over 100 nurses attended the event, with several examples of excellence in care and learning shared. The conference also marked the launch of the Trust’s new initiative - 5 Star Nursing - setting out priorities for the nursing workforce over the next 12 months.

5 Star Nursing focuses on quality and safety and how nurses, who account for almost half of our workforce, play a huge role in delivering our vision of 5 Star Patient Care.

To help us achieve the Trust’s vision, the 2024/25 nursing priorities were also announced at the conference:

• We will ensure all risk assessments are completed accurately and in a timely fashion.

• We will accurately re-assess and monitor any patient that is with us for longer than seven days.

• We will minimise the risk of patients catching hospital acquired infections, specifically MRSA, by following IPC guidelines.

• We will keep patients well hydrated at all times.

• We will complete our training so that we are well equipped to care for our patients needs.

• We will ensure our patient’s communication needs are met, and where needed, the relevant teams are notified and involved.

Everything you need to know about 5 Star Nursing is on our one-stop-shop staff intranet page – head over there now to find out more.

Aspiring to achieve ‘5 Star Ward’ status

To help achieve these priorities, we’ve launched our new 5 Star Ward Accreditation Programme. This programme will ensure that all of the staff on our clinical wards, not just our nursing workforce, will work towards providing the same high standards right throughout MWL.

Every ward will be regularly assessed on a set of quality standards, and a star rating will be assigned, ranging from 5, 4 and 3 stars. These ratings will be assessed with full support and guidance given by the Senior Leadership Team, detailing areas of improvements which will support the quality of care we deliver.

Celebrating our long serving staff

In the remarkable settings of the prestigious West Tower and Knowsley Hall, the 2024 Long Service Awards were held in June, celebrating the amazing achievement of staff who have dedicated their working lives of over 25 and 40 years’ continuous service to the Trust.

Ann Marr OBE, Chief Executive, and Richard Fraser, Chairman, hosted the ceremonies to pay tribute to those long-serving members of staff who started their careers at the Trust back in 1984 for those marking 40 years, and 1999 for those marking 25 years.

Those receiving their award were given a choice of venue and date in which to celebrate, and on each occasion, Ann welcomed guests congratulating everyone on their extraordinary achievement and thanked each and every member of staff for their exceptional loyalty to the NHS.

It was then time for the presentations, as staff were invited on stage to receive their award, with Richard Fraser, Trust Chairman, and Gill Brown, Deputy Chair, closing each ceremony. They echoed Ann’s thanks to staff for their remarkable commitment to the Trust and to the patients we care for.

Employee of the Month

Here at MWL, we always like to recognise the many achievements of our staff and give thanks to all those who make a difference to our patients and their colleagues.

Each month, we take it a step further and recognise someone who has made an extraordinary difference to those around them by naming them Employee of the Month, which let’s face it, with over 9,000 staff here at MWL is no mean feat! Nominations are received from right across the Trust, for clinical and non-clinical staff, patient-facing and behind the scenes, celebrating those who have excelled in their role.

Know someone who has made a difference – nominate them now!

You can get involved by nominating someone who has demonstrated our Trust values, provided excellence in care or someone who helps you each day and makes MWL a great place to work.

Head over to the staff intranet to find out more information about previous winners and find lots of top tips to help you nominate your star. One of your colleagues could be recognised and celebrated for their outstanding achievements just like Maria, Alyson, Lesley and Victoria! Don’t miss out, submit your nomination today.

April 2024

Dr Maria Konstantopoulou, Consultant and Clinical Director of Dermatology, Ormskirk Hospital

Nominated by: Dr Arsalan Sheikh, Specialty Doctor

Working at the Trust for over 5 years, most recently Maria has been key in driving a new Teledermatology pilot scheme across Southport and Ormskirk hospitals. This advancement in technology allows for patients to be assessed remotely, reducing the number of times patients are required to attend hospital and improving waiting times. Maria is described as hard working, passionate about the service and the standards of care she provides to her patients.

May 2024

Alyson Swift – Cellular Pathology Personal Medical Secretary, Whiston Hospital

Nominated by: April West, Pathology Admin Team Leader Alyson has worked at MWL for 34 years and is described by colleagues in Pathology as the ‘go to person’ who goes above and beyond in her role and is always willing to help. They say her knowledge and experience in the specialty of Cellular Pathology and systems is invaluable. One consultant mentioned how much Alyson supported her when she first came to the Trust as a trainee many years ago, and how Alyson continues to do so in the consultant’s new role today. She has no doubt that the entire team in Cellular Pathology benefits directly and indirectly from Alyson’s skill set.

June 2024

Lesley Brant – Patient Advice Liaison Support (PALS) Officer, Southport Hospital

Nominated by: Members of the Corporate Nursing and Governance Team

Lesley has worked at the Trust for over 4 years, supporting the needs of the organisation as a point of contact for patients, families and carers who require assistance in answering questions and resolving concerns. Described as responsive and caring by colleagues, during the peak of winter pressures, Lesley became the dedicated PALS representative based in Southport Hospital’s Accident & Emergency Department. Her role was invaluable as she engaged with patients during some of the busiest times, offering guidance and resolving issues in a timely manner.

July 2024

Victoria Sumner – Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist, Whiston Hospital

Nominated by: June Holmes, Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist

Working at the Trust for over 11 years, Victoria always goes the extra mile in everything she does. She is warm and friendly, a true team player, has excellent communication skills and adapts to the various needs of her patients. Recently, Victoria has been involved with the care of a young patient who is sadly in their last weeks of life. She has spent time with them and their family, before and after working hours, to prepare and plan for end of life. Victoria has provided an exceptional level of care and both the patient as well as their family have asked that we outline how amazing she has been during such a difficult time.

Summer @ MWL

The summer is here, and even though the sun doesn’t seem to understand it’s allowed to stay out for longer than a week, there’s still plenty happening here at MWL and in the surrounding areas to get involved with.

Here’s our ‘at a glance guide’ to essential things you can do in and out of work this summer…

It’s appraisal time!

The appraisal window is open until 30th September for all staff employed under Agenda for Change terms and conditions, including Medirest staff.

Make sure you book yours in with your line manager now!

Get out and about and enjoy our local area

We’re blessed in the Merseyside and West Lancashire areas with a wealth of fantastic tourist attractions and beautiful scenery, right here where we live.

So, we thought we’d asked our staff about their favourite places to visit. Here’s what they had to say…

Michelle Bull - Temporary Staffing Team Leader

"Burscough Wharf is a great place for all to enjoy, from children to grandparents. There are live music events, lots of places to choose for food and drink and we love a walk down the canal!".

Louise Kirby - Audit and NICE Support Officer

My favourite view is of Ashhurst Beacon in Skelmersdale, especially on a sunny day! As a family, we also love to visit Mere Sands Wood in Rufford which is part of the Lancashire Wildlife Trust.

And here’s some more top places to visit…

Knowsley Safari Park – lions and tigers and… make sure you watch those windscreen wipers if you’re brave enough to visit the monkey enclosure!

Liverpool museums and art galleries - you can visit the Museum of Liverpool, World Museum, Tate Liverpool, Central Library, and the Walker Art Gallery all free of charge.

Royal Albert Docks, Liverpool - a walk around the docks on a hot summer’s day should definitely be at the top of your to-do list! There are plenty of free events throughout the year to enjoy.

Crosby and Formby Beaches - Escape from the hustle and bustle and take a journey to Crosby Beach, home to the Antony Gormley Iron Men statues or Formby Beach, home to the Pinewoods and red squirrels.

Money saving over the summer

With or without kids, days out and summer fun can be expensive. So, make sure you check out all the latest deals and the many NHS freebies and discounts available.

Say a big MWL hello to our new medical recruits

We're delighted to welcome all of our new doctors starting with us this August.

Alongside our rotating doctors, a record 92 foundation year one doctors will be posted across our hospital sites, our biggest ever yearly intake!

All of our staff are here to support you during your time at MWL and we’re looking forward to working with you to deliver 5 Star Patient Care.

Because You’re Amazing

I want to praise all the outstanding staff at Ormskirk Hospital. I have ongoing care with several departments and have always been provided the best possible treatment. Thank you to the nurses, doctors and consultants who are all very courteous and helpful each time I visit.

I would like to compliment the Eye Clinic at St Helens Hospital. I recently had an operation and the consultant as well as the staff were absolutely brilliant with me. They made me feel comfortable and explained everything they were doing so I wasn't scared. A big thank you to the whole team.

After an unfortunate accident, I ended up in Whiston Hospital’s A&E. Even though it was busy, the staff couldn’t have been more helpful and kind. Thank you for looking after me.

Can I please thank all doctors, nurses and staff for the excellent care my 90-year-old father received over the last two weeks. He was treated with care, compassion and respect despite the obvious pressures, the staff are under. We will always be grateful.

Thank you to Whiston Hospital A&E and Ward 4B for looking after my partner Dave the past 3 days. He’s now minus an appendix but all the better for it.

I had a small surgery at Ormskirk Hospital and was a day case patient on Ward F. I found everyone to be lovely and really welcoming. Ranging from the healthcare assistants, the nurses, right the way through to the surgery staff. Everyone was professional and checked in with me throughout.

Southport Hospital’s A&E department now has a good system in place which moves people through more quickly to where they need to be. After triage, I had tests and bloods taken. Once the results were through, I then saw a doctor, given a diagnosis, medication was administered, and I received further medication to take home. Throughout the whole time I was there, I found all staff to be professional, approachable, knowledgeable and they clearly explained my diagnosis. They were very busy but weren’t rushed in their manner. The day after, I received my follow up clinic appointment for the near future.

The Sanderson Suite at St Helens Hospital has exceptional staff. My experience having a possible skin cancer lump removed was painless and first class in every way. Many thanks to everyone who worked so hard to reassure and help all who were waiting for their procedure.
