Hello UC Sports Fans, UC’s commitment “to educate each student for a life of productive work, enlightened living, and community involvement” is a mission that brings to each student countless opportunities and real responsibilities. Athletics plays a vital role in the life of the University and in accomplishing our mission. Teamwork, fitness, community involvement, and leadership are some of the many life-long learning opportunities acquired through athletics. The University’s women’s soccer team provides growth experiences for student athletes and visibility for the university. It is an important part of our strong tradition of athletic success. We have championship teams competing in the new Mountain East Conference. We are fully committed to the philosophy of balance between athletics and academics that is the hallmark of the NCAA Division II. Accordingly, UC athletics combines the zeal to have the most successful teams with the expectation that each student athlete will represent the University superbly every day and everywhere. The University of Charleston is committed to providing the best possible experiences for our students and also providing exciting spectator and involvement opportunities for residents of the greater Charleston community. I wish you and all of our talented student athletes the very best.

Sincerely, Dr. Edwin H. Welch President

In its first 125 years, the University of Charleston has grown from a small seminary college to a nationally-recognized university comprised of four locations. UC was founded by the Southern Methodist denomination in 1888 as Barboursville Seminary in Barboursville, W.Va., and became a college in 1889. In 1901, it was renamed Morris Harvey College in honor of a prominent donor. During the Great Depression, the college moved to Charleston to take advantage of the larger metropolitan area. As a result of the merger between the Methodist church North and South, the college disaffiliated from the denomination and Morris Harvey College became independent in 1942. From 1935 to 1947, the college was located in downtown Charleston, holding classes in several separate buildings. During these years, the college grew steadily, in part because of a merger with Kanawha Junior College and an affiliation with the Mason College of Fine Arts and Music. Recognizing the need for a unified campus, in 1947 construction of the present facilities began on the south bank of the Kanawha River. The Board of Trustees changed the name from Morris Harvey College to the University of Charleston on December 13, 1978. On August 1, 2012 the University announced it entered into an agreement to establish new locations in Beckley and Martinsburg, W.Va., to replace Mountain State University, which was slated to go out of business in a few months. By January 1, 2013 UC-Beckley, UC-Martinsburg and UCOnline joined UC-Charleston as part of the University of Charleston. In a matter of four months, UC grew to 32 academic programs, over 360 employees and approximately 2,000 students. The University serves the community as a focal point for numerous intellectual, scientific, cultural, athletic, and civic events. These interactions between the University and the community are vital to the achievement of the University's mission.

The mission of the University of Charleston is to educate each student for a life of productive work, enlightened living, and community involvement.

He studied International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science and Higher Education Administration at the Harvard Institute for Educational Management. His Ph.D. is in Social Ethics and he is an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church. Dr. Welch served in the Executive Office of the President at The White House from 1961 until 1971 in the administrations of Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. Dr. Welch has been President of the University of Charleston since 1989. He has led the institution through a period of unprecedented fundraising, expansion of full-time student enrollment, redefining the institution’s mission, transforming its academic program, adding graduate programs in pharmacy, physician’s assistant and business, constructing 7 of the 11 buildings on campus, and acquiring national recognition for UC’s leadership in outcomes-based learning and student assessment. He led the creation of a central administrative computing corporation (i.e., ICE) which serves seven colleges and universities. Dr. Welch takes great pride in the ongoing transformation of the University of Charleston into a leader in private higher education.

Dr. Bren Stevens Director of Athletics Phone: 304-357-4911 Email: brenstevensucwv.edu

A native of Massachusetts, Stevens was recruited to what was then known as Morris Harvey College to play volleyball in 1976. As a player, she won both WVIAC and Mid-West Regional First-Team honors. After stints teaching in high school in Boston and in Kanawha County, Stevens was recruited to coach the University of Charleston volleyball squad in 1992. She has held multiple roles at UC, progressing from coaching volleyball and swimming to physical education instructor in 1996, assistant professor of sports administration in 2000, and associate athletic director in 2005. Stevens meanwhile earned a master’s degree in exercise physiology and a doctorate in education administration, putting those skills to work in the classroom and as senior woman administrator in the UC athletic department.

Stevens coached the Golden Eagles volleyball team for 19 seasons and holds a career record of 506-210. Her teams have made the NCAA volleyball tournament seven times, won the conference title in 1997, 2001 and 2006, and won the conference championship in 2004, 2005 and 2007. Bren was named WVIAC Coach of the Year three times (1995, 1997, and 2001), and was inducted into the University of Charleston Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. In 2011, Dr. Stevens earned her 500th career win, during UC’s match with Alderson-Broaddus, which puts Stevens 13th on the NCAA Division II list of most wins for active coaches.

Bradley, a former first baseman/catcher for rival West Virginia Wesleyan, has been with the UC baseball program since 1999, with the exception of the 2003-04 season. That year he was the head coach at Garrett Community College, which reached the regional finals. According to Bradley, four players from that team went on to play professionally and one is still in the New York Mets system.

Beckley, W.Va. - Charleston opened up WVIAC Tournament play as they battled the number 1 seed Seton Hill Griffins at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley, WV. The Golden Eagles jumped on Seton HIll early 15-5 and held on for an upset win over the #9 ranked Griffins 16-14 to advance in the winners bracket. UC improves to 20-27 overall. Charleston took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. After a leadoff double by Ryan Foster, the Golden Eagles used three Griffin errors to score four runs getting RBI's from Corey Hill, Tyler Itnyre & Sage Iacovone. Seton Hill got two runs back in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 4-2. The Griffins took the lead in the second on a three-run HR by Nick Sell. UC took the lead back in the fourth at 8-5 with four more unearned runs, taking advantage of the Seton Hill miscues to give Charleston the three-run cushion midway through the 9-inning game. Charleston continued to pound Griffin pitching in the fifth scoring 5 runs to increase their lead to 13-5. Foster would start the scoring with a 2-run double followed by RBI singles from Robert Collin and John Schraer. UC would hand the ball over to Tyler Itnyre to bring home the Charleston victory as he pitched the final 2 1/3 innings giving up only two hits, allowing no runs to secure the huge upset over the #9 nationally ranked Griffins for the Golden Eagles. Starter Josh Weinberg picked up the win for Charleston, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing 8 earned runs while Itnyre earned the save. UC was led in offense by Collin who drove in four on a 2-for-6 effort with both hits being doubles.
