Hitting our Stride Development e-Newsletter | summer 2011

Hitting our Stride is the perfect title of our first Development E-Newsletter. The 2010–2011 school year truly saw Mount Vernon’s development programs grow and deepen in their impact on students, faculty and the campus. The year was highlighted by the introduction of “The Big 4”, the new line-up of annual fund-raising initiatives. Under the guidance of the Advancement Committee and supported by so many outstanding and committed volunteers, the development staff worked to provide fund-raising events that are meaningful to our School families and to fund programs that provide new learning opportunities for our students and faculty.

Participation in the Mount Vernon Fund

90% by parents grew to

100+ 150%

As we Hit our Stride, we also hit new highs along the way. Participation in the Mount Vernon Fund by parents grew from 60% to 90%, and every parent of a student in the Three-Year-Old classes through Grade 3 made a gift to the Fund. The Georgia Tax Credit Program grew 150% in participation, allowing the School to provide 19 incoming students in the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools with financial aid and the opportunity for a Mount Vernon education. The Mustang Golf Classic added a fun, new element, the Junior Mustang Golf Challenge, which drew more than 50 students to compete in driving, chipping and putting contests. The astounding success of the Mustang Rally was seen in the faces of the students who took center stage as parade leaders, field game champions and carnival revelers. For the Mustang Rally, the key to surpassing the budgeted goal and providing new technology on both campuses was the support of the more than 100 family sponsors who made a commitment to a first time event. 2 | 2011 Development e-Newsletter

As a development team, our goal is really very simple – to support the growth and learning of the students and faculty of Mount Vernon Presbyterian School. We cannot thank the School community enough – the volunteers and donors whose support makes this goal a reality. As we continue to grow our development programs, let us know how we are doing. Are we demonstrating how your gift impacts the School? Are we sharing how annual giving affects the ability to implement the long-term vision of the School? Are we connecting how your gift supports the School’s mission? Your feedback is important to us.

The Mount Vernon community is a strong one and together we can continue to do great things! Thank you for your continued support.

The Mount Vernon Fund

Support of the Mount Vernon Fund is vital to the School’s mission and bridges the gap between the total cost of operating the School and tuition revenue. Participation in the Mount Vernon Fund is important and every gift, no matter the size, is meaningful and appreciated. Each year the primary goal of the Mount Vernon Fund is to receive the highest percentage of support from our School community.

To support the School’s overall growth, continue to expand curriculum offerings, and develop athletic and arts programs, Mount Vernon focuses on four annual initiatives called The Big 4. These funding strategies also encourage school unity and spirit and positively impact the daily life of our students. Partner level donors celebrated the success of the Mount Vernon Fund at a luncheon at the Cherokee Town Club in May. Shown is Dr. Brett Jacobsen thanking Melody and Todd Rounsaville for their involvement and support.

In 2010-2011, with Margot and Robert Shuford serving as campaign chairs and leading a productive team of grade level representatives, parent participation in the Mount Vernon Fund grew to an impressive 90%, a level that is far above average for the metro-Atlanta area. Through the generous support of all donors, the School also exceeded the budget goal…proving that each and every gift makes a difference. Funds raised are being used on many projects including the completion of the cross country track, the purchase and installation of a new sound system by the Glenn Campus field, investment in new laboratory equipment for science labs, professional development opportunities for faculty and enhanced programmatic offerings for students. For the first time in school history, seven grade levels reached 100% parent participation. The Kindergarten parents, led by representatives Angela and Michael Nagy became the first grade to reach this goal. The parents in 2nd Grade, led by representatives Debbie and Todd House, were the next to reach 100% participation. Representatives Sharon and Jim Griswold encouraged giving from all of the 3rd Grade parents. Heleena and Mike Roush guided the parents in Pre-K and Young 5s to this milestone, and the parents in the Three’s, led by Julie and John Barber, also reached 100% participation. Everyone supporting the Mount Vernon Fund with a philanthropic gift is making an investment in our students and faculty.

The Mount Vernon Fund

Mount Vernon Fund Committee

“It is because of ALL the people who put 100% effort into their roles at MVPS that we wanted this year to be so successful and set the stage for many future years of a healthy Mount Vernon Fund. We do this because we feel so grateful and blessed that our family gets to be a part of such a special place. The parent participation level is truly a testament to how families at MVPS are also so grateful.”

“In addition to allowing Georgia taxpayers a rare opportunity to decide how a portion of their tax dollars will be used, the Georgia Tax Credit Program allows Mount Vernon to provide financial aid to deserving and qualified students. This not only adds to the bottom line of the school, it frees up additional funds for other kinds of financial aid and school related programs.” Dan Turner, chair for Georgia Tax Credit Program

georgia private school tax credit program The Georgia Private School Tax Credit Program allows eligible private citizens and corporations to redirect a portion of their Georgia state income tax dollars to support financial aid for students transferring to Mount Vernon from public schools. This unique opportunity allows deserving students to realize their dream of an exceptional Mount Vernon education.

In 2009, Mount Vernon welcomed 42 participants to this program. In 2010, the School saw an increase to 127 participants redirecting $240,000 total for financial assistance. Already in 2011, the number of faculty and staff participating in the program has doubled from the previous year and last year 19 Mount Vernon students received support from these funds.

The State of Georgia sets aside $50 million annually in tax credits for individuals and corporations that donate funds to a Student Scholarship Organization (SSO). Through this program, Georgia taxpayers can redirect up to $1,000 if filing individually or up to $2,500 if filing jointly to a private school of their choosing in Georgia. Georgia C-Corporations can contribute up to 75% of their corporate tax liability. Participants receive a dollar-for-dollar credit on their state income taxes. The redirected funds are sent to Mount Vernon to provide financial assistance to applicants and students of the School.

Based on the program’s rapid growth over the past 3 years, the $50 million state-wide cap is expected to be met in 2011 as early as October. Participation in the GTCP is very easy and the opportunity is available to anyone in our School community – parents, grandparents, friends, and employers – who pay Georgia state income taxes. Please continue to share this information with those who would prefer to direct money to Mount Vernon rather than give it to the State of Georgia. If you have any questions about the GTCP, we encourage you to speak to your accountant, contact Amanda Spencer at 404-252-3448, or visit http://www.mountvernonschool.org/ga.tax.credit.html

The 2010 Mustang Golf Classic was held at the renowned Hawk’s Ridge Golf Club thanks in great part to the generosity of Donna and Joe Jillson, grandparents of Luke and Olivia Barnes. All funds raised from the Mustang Golf Classic have been designated toward the construction of a new Field House. A new and exciting addition to this year’s event was the Junior Mustang Golf Challenge for younger children. With adults playing in the tournament, older students serving as helpers or golfing, and the younger students participating in the first Junior Mustang Golf Challenge, the Mustang Golf Classic became an event that could be enjoyed by the whole family. Current PGA golfer, Heath Slocomb, generously donated his time for the second year for the “beat the pro” contest.

The Mount Vernon Fund

Mustang Rally As a new tradition for Mount Vernon, the Mustang Rally has already become a significant part of the school experience. Chaired by Nancy Calhoun and Elizabeth Jones, the allschool event brought everyone together for a day of fun with a focus on family. Involving all students in preschool through 12th grade, Mustang Rally includes a parade, field races, family picnic and carnival games. One of the most significant moments of Mustang Rally and one that defines our School is when preschool students hold hands with or top the shoulders of seniors as they parade together showing the “Alpha & Omega” of the student body.

Through the support of more than 100 family sponsors, 13 corporate sponsors and the entire School community, more than $110,000 was raised to support the technology needs of our students and faculty. And it was all presented in a wonderful family day at the School. Funds raised from the first Mustang Rally are being invested directly in our students and teachers with the purchase and installation of interactive white boards in classrooms, teachers being provided upgraded laptops, and the purchase of necessary network and server upgrades…making a profound difference in the lives of Mount Vernon students in the 21st century.

Everyone could definitely feel the “MVPS Love” at Mustang Rally! I left that afternoon exhausted, but loved my school more than ever! Elizabeth Jones, co-chair of Mustang Rally
