Greetings on a brisk, late fall day from Mount Vernon Nazarene University! We recently concluded the annual meeting of the MVNU board of trustees and the fall 2002 Homecoming activities. The closing event for the special week was a University Gala featuring the music of a 130+ alumni Collegians Chorale and a message by Dr. William Prince, general superintendent emeritus in the Church of the Nazarene and MVNU’s fourth president. What an evening!
At the annual faculty/staff “Back to School” dinner program at the beginning of the fall semester, I focused on thanksgiving, celebration and gratitude. I asked the academic division chairpersons and the academic dean, the Staff Council, directors in the Enrollment Services and Student Development division, the chaplain and his staff along with the cabinet, to gather near me at the podium in the dining commons.
I asked everyone present to join me as I prayed for each, beginning with a prayer for the faculty. As I moved from group to group in prayer, the Holy Spirit of God hovered over the room with his sweet, hallowed presence. What a powerful moment! Our prayers were truly focused on thanksgiving, adoration and gratitude.
I felt the same way about the recent board meeting. We wanted to focus on thanksgiving and gratitude. Yes, business was processed but on numerous occasions we paused to thank God for his presence with us and his guidance to us as we reflected on campus life and activities during the past few years.
During the board meeting I shared, again, the four priority areas of responsibility around which I want to organize my work:
Spiritual leadership for the campus community and beyond; strategic thinking, planning, and leading; Christian leadership development regionally and worldwide; and major donor cultivation and gifting and endowment development
I wish I could tell you that I have faithfully organized my time around these four priority areas. I cannot. However, I must consistently return to these overarching priorities and responsibilities if I am to be an effective MVNU president. Nothing less than focused, Christian servant leadership, as reflected in the above-mentioned priorities will enable MVNU to emerge as a nationally recognized, academically strong and distinctively Christian institution.
May it be so, Lord. Amen.
MVNU Homecoming 2002
“Welcome Home”
Wind, rain and freezing temperatures welcomed MVNU alumni back to campus in November for the first-ever University Homecoming. Despite the weather, more than 1,200 alumni participated in this exciting weekend. With the theme of “Elegance and Integrity, “ the Homecoming pageant kicked off activities on Thursday, Nov. 14. Senior Wendy Davies was crowned Homecoming queen. Other members of the court included seniors Summer Burton and Kelli Shearron; juniors Lesli Hall, Katherine Stevens and Sarah Jane Zechman; sophomores Heidi Heaney and Lindsay Reed; and freshmen Amy Allen and Bethany LaVigne.
“MVNU has become a powerful university –more than we know – reaching into the hearts of our culture and our world.”
-Dr. William Prince
On Friday night, the traditional Cougar Classic basketball tournament brought in Kentucky Christian College, Grace College and Concordia University. Alumni and friends enjoyed fellowship and fair foods at the After-the-Game Party in the Donoho Recreation Center.
The classes of 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992 and 1997 reminisced at their reunion brunches on Saturday morning. It was just like old times with class photos taken, reunion “yearbooks” to look through and more stories than there was time to tell. This important time gave classmates the time to catch up with one another and get reacquainted with old friends. Many also braved the elements for the annual 5-K and one-mile fun runs in the morning. More basketball action came on Saturday afternoon as the Cougars battled Grace College and came away with the championship on Saturday.
This year’s Homecoming was very special as alumni were able to celebrate the recent transition at the University Gala, a formal dinner on Saturday evening. Honorary alumni presentations were made to Chet Foraker and Roberta Simmons, and former MVNU president Dr. William Prince was the featured speaker. He applauded MVNU for how far it has come in such a short time. He also reminded listeners that there is more here than just teaching, there is a model lifestyle lived out, where we participate in the redemptive work in our world. “MVNU has become a powerful university—more than we know— reaching into the hearts of our culture and our world,” Prince commented. The young and hip Plus One topped off the weekend with a vibrant performance, which included a brand new music format and songs sure to be hits with the release of their next album.
MVNU looks forward to an even greater tradition of University Homecoming celebrations in the future. If your reunion class is coming up next year, be sure to watch your mail for all the details next fall!
Two Presented with Honorary Alumni Status at Gala
by Trinia Huddleston
Each year at Homecoming, Mount Vernon Nazarene University is proud to honor two well-deserving individuals of the MVNU family with honorary alumni status. This year we honored Chet Foraker and Roberta Simmons.
Chet Foraker graduated from Bluffton College in 1959 with a bachelor of science in biology. He earned his master’s in school administration from Bowling Green in 1963. Foraker taught at Galion and Bucyrus high schools and coached at Bluffton, MVNU (baseball and basketball) and Trevecca Nazarene University. He also served as athletic director at MVNU and TNU.
Foraker worked in the sales departments at Scholastic Books, Zondervan, McMillin, Pneuma Press and DC Health, where he served as vice president of sales and marketing. He currently serves as VP of sales and marketing at Sopris West. He resides in Trophy Club, Texas.
Roberta Simmons graduated from Eastern Nazarene College in 1968 and began working for MVNU that July. During the early years, she was secretary to the academic dean, Dr. Lloyd Taylor, and assisted in the student services and development areas. She left MVNU in 1976 to raise her family.
Upon the opening of MVNU’s new central post office in 1980, Roberta returned as the coordinator of the campus post office. She continues to serve MVNU in this position and commented, “MVNU has been and continues to be a very important part of my life.”
Roberta and her husband Don have two children, JoLee and David, and three grandchildren, Micayla, Skylar and Logan.
MVNU Selects New VP of University Advancement
Mount Vernon Nazarene University President Dr. E. LeBron Fairbanks recently announced the appointment of Rev. Keith Newman as new vice president of University Advancement.
Rev. Newman currently pastors the Mission Valley Church of the Nazarene, San Diego, Calif.—the largest Nazarene congregation on the Southern California District.
Newman has an undergraduate degree from Houston Baptist University, a graduate degree from Southern Nazarene University, and has completed 21 hours toward the doctor of education degree at the University of Houston.
Newman previously served as senior pastor of the Houston First Church of the Nazarene.
During his tenure, attendance increased 250 percent and finances by 350 percent.
Significantly, he also led the congregation through refocusing and relocation processes.
Thirteen acres of property were purchased valued at $3 million. Newman led the congregations through two capital stewardship campaigns to build a new worship center and education building.
While in Houston, Newman joined with Dr. John Bisagno, senior pastor of the 22,000member Houston First Baptist Church, in forming The Shepherd’s Group, a capital stewardship consulting company. He assisted Bisagno in writing the book, “Successful
Church Fund-Raising,” published by Broadman Press. Newman wrote the forward to the book, assisted in writing numerous chapters in the book, and the capital campaign strategy at Houston First Church of the Nazarene is included in the Appendix section of the book.
During this period of time, Newman personally worked with churches from various denominations in reaching capital campaign goals from $250,000 to $2.5 million. He was a founding member of the board of trustees for a new Christian high school in Houston, and was involved with other board members in raising $16 million toward a $25 million goal.
For the past seven years, Newman has directed a number of New Start Assessment Centers for the Nazarene denomination, and has served as the national director for the last three years.
Rev. and Mrs. Newman (Carolyn) have two children, Andrew, age 17, and Alana, age 9. Andrew is a senior in high school and a starter on the high school football team. Rev. and Mrs. Newman were on campus during October Foundation Board meetings and Keith returned for general board meetings in November.
President Fairbanks commented, “Pastor Newman brings a rare combination of incredible talents, gifts and abilities to the MVNU University Advancement position primarily responsible for financial development, strategic marketing and external relations. His mentoring by and association with Dr. John Bisagno in capital campaigning will assist us greatly in the University’s efforts to raise significant funds for capital projects on campus.”
Rev. Newman will conclude his pastor assignment in San Diego by December 31, and anticipates a move to Mount Vernon in early January 2003.
Music Faculty Publish History of Department
Mrs. Virginia Cameron and Dr. David Liles recently undertook the job of compiling a history of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University music department. Part of their goal was to show current students the thread of God's faithful provision in terms of strength, alumni success, faculty, staff and students that has woven the department together into a fabric that brings glory to the Lord.
Early this summer, Cameron began the tedious examination of every Enerazan yearbook while Liles began writing text and scanning archive photographs. The journey proved to be more than interesting. There have been low times, as in August of 1977, when the music department building was struck by lightning. The modular building, located where Thorne Library now sits, was completely destroyed by the lightning-induced fire. With pianos, personal libraries, and the piano lab gone, the department spent the next year in the Maplewood/Elmwood apartments rebuilding.
The history points out other significant events such as major administrative changes, the completion of the R.R. Hodges Chapel building which now houses the department, the first European tours, new ensembles, faculty changes and other information. The history also emphasizes the music faculty members as active performers, and includes the names of students who graduated in each year, those who gave recitals and guest artists on campus.
The project titled, "Pressing Onward...” was completed in September 2002. The history costs $10 per copy with proceeds benefiting the Music Scholarship fund. Contact Tressa Daley at (740) 392-6868, ext. 3000 to purchase the history or for more information.
Phonathon 2003 Is On Its Way!
February will be here before we know it and along with it, MVNU’s annual Phonathon program. Last year was a record year for giving and with a goal of $105,000 this year, it is our desire to help as many students financially as possible. We are asking you to partner with us by making an investment that
pays lasting dividends. More than 92 percent of students depend on financial aid to attend MVNU. Monetary generosity and prayerful support from alumni, friends, faculty and staff are crucial for students. It makes all the difference! Watch your mail for a Phonathon brochure for more details on how you can get involved. If you have questions, please call University Advancement at 1-800-367-9294.
MVNU Steps Up Involvement With Local Food For The Hungry Drive
For the past nine years, Mount Vernon Nazarene University has been a partner in fighting hunger throughout its Knox County community. This year, MVNU faculty, staff, students and even alumni have found more ways to be involved.
Efforts focus around the Holiday Basketball Invitational, where admission is six non-perishable food items or $4. The $2,000 raised and 137 boxes of food were distributed to Interchurch Social Services and The Salvation Army through the food drive.
Faculty and staff participate in a competition to see which department can bring in the most food items. This year, the Music department won with 547 items – that’s 77 items per person! Students also donate food and money through the “Food for Fines” program. Students can pay off any fines accrued throughout the year with cans of food.
Students also participate in Hunger Awareness Week, spearheaded by Joe Noonen, assistant to the chaplain for mission and ministry opportunities, and Karen Boyd, professor of social work. Students stage homeless simulations complete with soup kitchen, hold a Social Justice service and candlelight vigil and educate the campus and community of how hunger affects lives.
Each year, community members bake and decorate elaborate gingerbread houses to be auctioned with proceeds going to Food For The Hungry. Last year the houses brought in over $30,000! MVNU alumnae Pam Rose and Peggy Bakewell both decorated houses this year. Family and Consumer Sciences professor Dr. Candace Fox (pictured) created yet another “house” which included a campus montage of the Cougar Den, the Eternal Flame, the reflecting pond and the new University sign.
MVNU is proud to join with its community to fight the common enemy of hunger! If you would like to be involved in this effort next year, please contact University Advancement at 1-800-367-9294.
Friends Reunited
1,500 Miles From Home
By Carl Langley
Ricky Warren came to Mount Vernon Nazarene University to play soccer. Little did he know, two years later he would be reunited with his hometown friend Jefferson “Bumpy” Hinds.
Warren and Hinds both hail from Kingston, Jamaica—a place Ricky compares to Brooklyn. The two met at and attended the same elementary school and grew up together as friends. Their bond continued as they played on the same soccer clubs throughout their high school years, despite attending different high schools.
Warren, a 24-year-old sports management major, is the youngest of six children. He came to know MVNU head soccer coach Paul Furey through his brother, who played soccer for Ohio Dominican University and currently resides in Columbus, Ohio. Furey eventually persuaded Warren to come to Ohio and play soccer for the Cougars.
On one particular visit, Warren played a videotape of a soccer match in Jamaica for Coach Furey. Furey noticed a small forward with strong skills, and Ricky mentioned it was his friend Bumpy. Later that year, after losing one of the men’s soccer players, Ricky reminded the coach of his friend. On a visit home, Warren presented Hinds with an MVNU brochure and encouraged him to enroll the following year. The idea of playing soccer together again excited them both!
This year, together again, they have made quite a pair—both on and off the soccer field. Warren and Hinds are very happy with their decision to attend MVNU and are elated to continue playing organized soccer together. They traveled long roads to be at Mount Vernon, but both agree it has all been worth it!
Warren hopes to play soccer professionally after college while pursuing a sports management career. Hinds, a 23-year-old freshman, has not declared a major yet, but said he would love to have a career in electrical engineering.
Alumni at MVNU: Why We’re (Still)
Here
Compiled by Sara Bumpus and Sarah Sproul
This group is only a small representation of the many alumni who either never left MVNU or who have returned to find there’s more to love and even more to give.
Marelle Clagg
I graduated from MVNU in 1998 and returned as coordinator of Church Relations in June of 2001. The Lord has given me a heart for young people and a passion for Christian education. Working directly with the Music & Ministry groups and the Church Relations Ambassadors, I coordinate special church events. I feel at home at MVNU; the faculty, staff and students desire to build God's kingdom. Colossians 3:17 says "Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it in the name of the Lord Jesus." That common goal makes me feel a part of something special; moreover, I love the students! They are so full of life and potential. I stay here because I believe I have something to give. I want to see God's best for these students and this institution that has meant so much to me.
Tim Myatt
I have had the rare privilege of experiencing MVNU as student, faculty, and staff. My ten years as a software engineer in the commercial sector prepared me well for my current assignment as director of Network Computing. Although my times of growth were necessary, my heart was always part of the MVNU experience. The challenge of being a technology leader in this place and at this time is staggering. The load is lightened by a qualified and dedicated team of computer professionals and an administration supportive of technology initiatives. The primary question then is, "How can we use technology to be true to our mission and obedient to Christ?" That the Lord who promised to be with us "to the very end of the age" has chosen me to be a part of the answer in this place and at this time is an honor. May I be faithful.
Ramon McGee, newly hired Multicultural Affairs director, has put together a program through which individuals or departments on campus can “adopt” a multicultural or missionary student. Departments provide encouragement and support in various ways throughout the year. Both Warren and Hinds participate in this program. If this year proves successful, we hope to open the program up to any interested student. If any MVNU alumni or friends are interested in adopting a student, please contact McGee at (740) 392-6868, ext. 4550.

I graduated from MVNU in 1981 and began working here that fall. I am currently in my 22nd year at MVNU. I now teach in the math department. It is rewarding to work with students who struggled with math in the past. I have always felt very much at home at MVNU. As a student, I felt a common bond with other students, faculty and staff that I had not experienced before. This gave me the confidence to believe in myself. I continue to experience these bonds while in my faculty position. There is a lot of support in my teaching as well as my spiritual life. I have often been encouraged by my students' testimonies as well as hearing from my colleagues what God is doing in their lives. God has blessed me with the opportunity to be at MVNU; He has always been faithful!
Bevin Shiverdecker
After graduating from MVNU in May of 1981, I secured a teaching position in the social studies classroom in Inez, Ky. One Sunday morning ten years later, I knelt at an altar and prayed, “God, if Inez is where you want me, I’ll joyfully stay and teach. If I am needed somewhere else, make it clear to me.” The next week, I received a letter about an opening for a secondary education professor at MVNU. A classroom teacher is what I have always wanted to be. I have never doubted that calling. God is with me every day I walk into the classroom and every day that I travel to area schools to observe field students and student teachers. I am blessed.
MVNU Fall Sports Teams Have Banner Seasons
Over the past three months, the fall sports teams at Mount Vernon Nazarene University have posted outstanding seasons. For the first time in school history, all three won National Christian College Athletic Association East Region titles in the same year, and all three competed in the NCCAA National Tournament.
In women’s volleyball, the Lady Cougars have currently posted a 36-12 overall record – the team’s tenth straight season with at least 36 wins. MVNU finished second in the American Mideast Conference South Division with a 12-4 mark, taking third place in the AMC Tournament. In October, the team made its twelfth straight appearance in the NCCAA National Tournament, and MVNU finished as the national runner-up for the first time despite being the seventh seed in the 10team event. At press time, the Lady Cougars are preparing for the NAIA Region IX Tournament, where the winner of the fourteam event receives an automatic berth in the NAIA National Tournament.
The MVNU women’s soccer team has also had another exciting season as the Lady Cougars compiled a 13-6-1 overall record and finished third in the AMC South Division with a 5-1-1 conference mark. One of the highlights for the team was handing Tiffin University, the eventual NAIA Region IX Tournament champion, its only conference loss during the regular season. MVNU also won the NCCAA East Region title with a 5-1 win at Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College, and the Lady Cougars are headed to their second straight NCCAA National Tournament as of press time.

overall record despite an injury-plagued season and a tough conference schedule. The team finished the regular season with five straight wins and then notched its sixth consecutive win with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Nyack (N.Y.) College for the NCCAA East Region title. At press time, the Cougars are headed to the NCCAA National Tournament for the fourth time in the past five years.
Individually, several fall athletes have had recordsetting seasons or reached milestones. In volleyball, junior Carrie McClelland and senior Katie Zipf became the 14th and 15th players in school history to reach the 1,000-kill mark for their careers. Meanwhile, sophomore Katey Percival was named to the NCCAA All-American Second Team.
In women’s soccer, freshman Kristen Votapek has broken or tied six different records, compiling 24 goals and eight assists so far. On the men’s side, senior Trevor Knowles has posted a 1.02 goals against average to become the Cougars’ all-time leader in that category.
The fall season was also a record year for MVNU in the classroom as eight junior or senior student-athletes were named to the NAIA and NCCAA Academic AllAmerican Teams for having a 3.50 grade point average or higher. Jessica Harding received the honor in women’s volleyball, Dave Barry, Danny Lueking and Casey Swanson were recognized in men’s soccer, and Cheryl Balogh, Kelly Evans, Lisa Hinman and Krista Reynolds were honored in women’s soccer.

A Solid Investment With Eternal Dividends

Mark and Shawna Hudson
Mark and Shawna (Sayre) Hudson, 1996 graduates of Mount Vernon Nazarene University, know what it is like to experience Christ on the MVNU campus. Because they believe Christ continues to work across campus today, they have begun giving prayerfully to MVNU. Mark holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and works for Federal Mutual Insurance Company as a marketing representative. He commented, “The MVNU business department helped me set the ground work and opened the door to this wonderful career.” Shawna also graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business, and is now a homemaker full time and a Mary Kay representative part time. The Hudsons, along with their two children, Courtney and Conner, attend Elk River Church of the Nazarene in Charleston, W.Va., where they are involved in various children’s ministries. For Mark and Shawna, MVNU was the experience of a lifetime. “It’s where we found ourselves, found each other and, more importantly, found a closer relationship with our Savior. Our experiences at Mount Vernon taught us how to learn, how to study the Word, how to pray, how to worship, how to fellowship, how to use our degrees and how to give.” The Hudsons have been back to campus and know that these things haven’t changed. “Right now, at MVNU, students are being shaped by God to do his will,” Mark explained. The Hudsons say they will never be able to repay MVNU for what its faculty and staff have done in their lives.“We give through prayer and financial support so that future students will have the opportunity to have a life-changing experience; we give because MVNU has given so much to our family.” Mark and Shawna know that there are many positive programs across America that merit their gifts. However, as alumni, they have seen how MVNU invested in them, and realize the value of investing in return. “In the world’s financial market there are many uncertainties. It’s good to know that MVNU is a solid investment—one that is altogether different: it is an investment that will pay eternal dividends.” If you are interested in making a life-changing investment, contact University Advancement at 1-800-367-9294.
