MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Half of Getting There is Knowing How to Get There

Currently, our community is thinking together about the most fundamental convictions that will guide us into the future. It seems clear that half of getting to the place we want to be requires knowing how to get there. The following convictions will guide us into the days that lie ahead: Mount Vernon Nazarene University is an intentionally Christian community, framed by the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition, seeking to fulfill its educational mission, as defined by the following core convictions.

• Vital faith that permeates the life of the University.

• Vigorous partnership with the Church of the Nazarene.

• Active engagement with the broader Christian community.

• A quality holistic education, guided by the liberal arts tradition and professional excellence.

• Character as an expression of the moral formation inherent in our educational mission.

• Responsible stewardship of the resources entrusted to the University.

Significant challenges are ahead for those of us who intend to provide an authentically Christian Higher Education.

While some of these are financial, not all of them are about money. Certainly, we need sufficient resources to pay faculty and staff, build buildings, and invest in our students, but our great challenge is to remain steadfast with our most fundamental convictions. Moses once stood before the Hebrews as they prepared to enter the Promised Land. He said, “Keep these words that I am commanding you today

in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk to them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates” (Deuteronomy 6: 6-9). Our core convictions will serve as a reminder of who we are and as such where we are going.

“WHEN THE CHALLENGES TO OUR IDENTITY EMERGE (AND THEY DO ON A REGULAR BASIS) OUR CORE CONVICTIONS GIVE US A SENSE OF DIRECTION.” When the challenges to our identity emerge (and they do on a regular basis) our core convictions give us a sense of direction. MVNU will continue to be a place where a vital faith permeates everything. We are a place where Christian professors endeavor to bring their disciplines into focus through a dynamic encounter with the Christian faith. We do all this in conscious debt to the Church of the Nazarene and in conversation with the riches of the Christian family of denominations. When we understand the richness of our resources, we have the greatest possibility of providing a solid education within a liberal arts context. Actually, the proof of our convictions emerges through the character of those who are formed through our educational mission. All of this reflects our intention to be responsible stewards of the resources entrusted to the University. This is a challenge we eagerly embrace as a community.

Our convictions tell us not only how we will change the world with love of Christ, but to a large extent what we will be when we get there.

ears ago I bought a new vehicle equipped with OnStar. Surely, this is one of the great inventions of our time. While I do not know how it all works, I do know that it is possible to get from point A to point B by simply pushing a blue button. It is one of the most beautiful feelings in the world – “I would like to go to the nearest Panera Bread.” Just like that the turn-by-turn instructions appear and I am on my way. What is true for my vehicle is true for Mount Vernon Nazarene University. We need to know how to get from here to there. In fact, our Core Convictions serve as an “OnStar” for the University.

It is no secret that graduates of Mount Vernon Nazarene University are making a difference in a wide variety of fields and in all corners of the globe. What might be a bit more surprising is how many of them are pursuing their dreams with great success just a few short years removed from graduation.

We caught up with a few of our “young alumni” (most of those we spoke with graduated within the past 10 years) and asked them to tell us a bit about what they’ve been up to. We think their stories are worth sharing if only to remind ourselves that any dream worth having is a dream worth pursuing. And what better time to start than now.

KIMMY (BLAIR) ’05 NOONEN Visual Arts, 2005 Artist and Professor My days at MVNU feel a long way off when I reflect on where God has led me over the past eight years. I have been married to my amazing husband, Nate, for almost 7 years and have spent most of that time living in the wonderful city of Chicago (specifically Logan Square). The Lord has transformed us here in ways we are still realizing.

Shortly after arriving I was granted the opportunity to attend the University of Chicago and received a Masters in Fine Arts (MFA) in 2009. That same year I also felt led to begin a photography business in addition to my fine art practice. I am humbled by its growth and have been able to meet and serve many people throughout the world.

Despite the fact that I had no initial desire to teach, God (as He often does) placed me in an exciting new role at Judson University as an adjunct art professor between 2010-2012.

In July of last year we welcomed on our first child, Charlotte, into the world. I have immensely enjoyed spending the last year focusing on her and learning to be her mother while I simultaneously look ahead for the next steps in God’s plan for our family.

At every turn in the road, God is there, making a way that I never saw nor imagined. I continue to learn that I know very little about the best plan for my life and stand amazed by the joy and satisfaction He has provided in spite of my annoying need to be ever-certain in the always-unknown.

Logan Square has a number of strong diverse cultural centers, including St. Hedwig’s, the cultural and civic institution for Chicago's Multiethnic Catholic Community, The Hairpin Arts Center in nearby Avondale, and Chicago's Polish Village.

The University of Chicago was founded in 1890 and currently enrolls 9,850 graduate and professional students.

A Master of Fine Arts from the University of Chicago requires 900 studio hours, 300 hours of graduate seminars, 600 hours of electives, and a final thesis presentation.

It’s hard to believe all that’s happened since graduating from MVNU in 2008.

Married. Started an organization.

Traveled the world. Produced a film. All in a little less than 5 years. Wow. God is good and it’s a blessing to be serving Him full-time.

Shortly after graduating from MVNU, I met my beautiful wife, Shannon, and it truly was a “love at first sight” scenario. We met, talked for 8 months, and were married 3 months after that.

Soon after getting married the Lord gave us a vision for a ministry/mission organization that would reach out to youth worldwide through something as simple as a skateboard or surfboard.

This vision quickly turned into a reality, and what was once a dream is now known as Ride Nature. Ride Nature is an action sports mission’s organization with a mission and purpose to “impact the world through action sports outreach, evangelism, and discipleship.”

We have traveled to nearly a dozen different countries and have distributed literally hundreds of free skateboards and surfboards to children living in poverty. These simple tools have been used over and over again to share the Truth of Jesus Christ.

We have helped build and establish two international skateparks, one in Panama and one in Guatemala, and are currently planning two additional projects later this year. We also just released a fulllength evangelistic film featuring 33 professional athletes as well as worldrenowned author and speaker, Francis Chan. We are currently in the process of working to translate this film into 12 new languages before 2014. The Lord is blessing and using this ministry in such HUGE ways and we’re extremely excited to be a part of all that He has in store for the years to come.

I just recently became an author in January of this year through WestBow Press, a division of Thomas Nelson Publishing. My pen name is B.R. Cline.

exploring what makes a love story truly lasting. It is a romance based on forgiveness, with love and respect for God and for each other in a Song of Songs sort of way. And, yes, it even embraces the topic of sexuality. Thank goodness the theme for chapel during my last semester at MVNU was “Human Sexuality;” I am not sure church has ever been so fun! It also helped me develop my characters, too.

I originally chose to study English in order to become a journalist.

However, during my sophomore year, I had a very specific dream about two very specific characters.

Their story was so intriguing, it wouldn't leave me alone. Five years later it has become a book!

I intend to keep on writing—both fiction and nonfiction—primarily because I am so impressed by the gospel of Christ. Honestly, it is just hard for me not to talk about God. Prayerfully, in my desire to brag on Him as much as possible, I will be part of a great family of fellow believers seeking to make disciples and change the world with the love of our Christ.

My time at MVNU truly was "Life Changing.” I encountered a loving God who not only saved my life, but greatly influenced the lives of my characters as well. I believe God has given me a heart very sensitive to broken relationships, so I wanted to write a love story to combat the brokenness in our world and show people the beauty of honoring God and His way of life.

We both graduated from MVNU in the spring of 2010. That final semester we spent our time student teaching, planning a wedding that would take place on July 30, and gathering paperwork and visa documentation to fly to Seoul, South Korea, in early August. Our passports arrived with our visas stamped on August 1, and we booked our flights for a few days later.

We are now both 24 years old and have been teaching at Global Christian Foreign School for three years. Shelli really enjoys teaching Spanish to middle and high school Korean and international students, and Chris is having a blast teaching science to those same students.

Looking back, this was such a great first step transitioning from undergraduate education to the start of our new lives in another country. Most international schools in South

Korea provide housing and partial furnishing for new teachers, and they are very friendly to couples as well. It has been so obvious to us that God has specifically brought us to this awesome place and provided everything we needed along the way.

Since being here we’ve had multiple oncein-a-lifetime opportunities. Some of those include mission trips to Cambodia in 2011, and Myanmar (formerly Burma) in 2012.

We’ve taken tours of the DMZ and even visited the home that Kim Jung Il, former North Korean leader, grew up in! God also brought us to a great faith community, New Philadelphia Church, where we currently serve and worship.

We are so grateful to the MVNU community for teaching us and preparing us for a lifetime of adventure!

JEREMY SLONE Texas Children’s Cancer Center is the #1 pediatric cancer facility in Texas.

Texas Children’s Cancer Center has the largest stem cell and bone marrow transplant unit in the Southwest.

The International Program was created in 2008 and partners with agencies around the world to treat cancer in underdeveloped countries.

Botswana is a country in Southern Africa that has a population of just 2 million, one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world.

Botswana is plagued by drought and desertification and the life expectancy at birth is only 55 years.

My time at Mount Vernon Nazarene University certainly played a significant role in the direction my life has taken.

It was at MVNU that I was first exposed to the idea of "servant leadership." Pursuing higher education was viewed not as just a stepping stone to financial or professional success but as an opportunity to help others. That is my interpretation of the school motto: "To seek to learn is to seek to serve.”

I am a member of the International Program at the Texas Children’s Cancer Center. I am primarily based at the Princess Marina Hospital in Gaborone, Botswana, where I provide clinical care to hematology and oncology patients and continue to research the disparities in outcomes seen in children residing in developing countries. Princess Marina Hospital is the largest hospital in Botswana, and I am currently the only pediatric hematologistoncologist in the country. We made the move to Botswana in August of 2012 and are committed to serving at least three years here.

Throughout my life, God has placed me in unique and sometimes very challenging situations that have helped prepare me for what He intended for my life. Following God's path may not be easy but I cannot imagine a more fantastic journey!

Maysville was an important stop along the Underground Railroad. Author Harriet Beecher Stowe visited the area in 1833.

RYAN BRETH MVNU prepared me well for my next step in academics, when I went on to Kent State University and earned my licensure as a Physical Therapist Assistant. There were many people who applied to the program and without my experience and previous courses at MVNU, I would not have been accepted.

While in the program I was grateful for the many MVNU professors who helped prepare me for the tough classes ahead. My wife, Lauren (Brooks, ’11), and I met at MVNU in 2007 and got married in September of 2012. We currently live in the Columbus, Ohio, area.

I am a full time Physical Therapist Assistant at a skilled nursing facility while doing some home health and outpatient orthopedic work on the side. Lauren and I also

We planted CrossPoint Community Church in May of 2010 with some close friends in Maysville, Kentucky.

The focus of the church is on reaching those who are not being reached by other communities of faith and to do it in a way that benefits the community and the other churches in the area.

Recently we undertook a series of projects that focused on feeding the hungry under the banner “Love Does.” The people of CrossPoint were responsible for donating over 2,000 items of food to local food

pantries. Additionally, we helped serve a local church with their community garden.

This summer we will be attempting to feed the many children in our area who do not have consistent meals after school.

CrossPoint Community Church officially organized in May of 2013. We currently have four staff members, including MVNU alumnus Andrew Scholz and his wife Vanessa. You can learn more about our ministry at www.crosspointonline.net.

I cannot imagine my life without MVNU in it as it literally shaped me into who I am today. I honestly feel like I had the most incredible college experience ever along with great character-building friends, faculty, and staff all around me. My friends, wife, and I are always saying that we would literally “drop everything to spend another year on campus” at Mount Vernon Nazarene University once again. I can only hope that current students allow themselves to have the kind of experience that I had there, where they will become a more complete man or woman of God, learn more about their future profession, and have a lot of fun doing it.

I started medical school at Ohio State in August 2011, and God has been faithful in opening doors for me and creating opportunities to serve throughout this experience.”

One of my favorite opportunities as a medical student has been working with the New Life Clinic. This ministry provides free primary care services, principally to the homeless population in Columbus. Medical students are encouraged to participate as much as possible. Not only do we get to talk to patients about their health conditions and practice physical examination skills, we also get to talk with them about Jesus and pray with them.

This past summer I was blessed to get to travel to Swaziland and work with The Luke Commission in their service to provide health care to the Swazi people who are most in need. What I took away from this experience was the understanding that God can use

One year from now, I will decide which field of medicine I will enter after graduating from medical school (surgery, primary care, etc.).

Although I am unsure now of what that decision will be, I know that God will be faithful in directing my path as He has done so far throughout my journey. I plan on staying involved in providing service to the underprivileged, regardless of what area of medicine I enter.

I have been working for the Salvation Army in Cincinnati, Ohio, for the past four years. I work in the youth department in two areas. First, I run a creative arts ministry where students develop routines in dance, drama, mime and other art forms.

The second half of my job is as a Program Director at Camp SWONEKY (Southwest Ohio Northern Kentucky).

Camp SWONEKY brings in more than 1000 children from Ohio and Kentucky each year. A majority of our campers are from the inner city (Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus and Lexington) and so we have a unique opportunity to teach them about God, our world and our role in it.

I am also the volunteer Youth Pastor at Journey Church of the Nazarene in Franklin, Ohio, where I’ve served for the past 4 years. My education at Mount Vernon Nazarene University definitely helped confirm my calling. I feel equipped and prepared for the ministry because of my training at MVNU. I am currently working on my Masters in Education and will be certified to teach Secondary English in the fall of 2014.

MVNU certainly played a large role in shaping and molding me into the person I am today.

Twelve years ago, if someone told me that I would serve as a missionary in Africa and a pastor in Oklahoma, I would not have believed it. I knew I had a call to ministry, but I never thought I could be a pastor, and certainly not a missionary.

After graduating from MVNU I was married, and completed my Master of Divinity before serving as a volunteer missionary in Swaziland. Brent and I served for one year as coordinators for Bethany First Church of the Nazarene and The Swaziland Partnership, linking American and Swazi partners in the fight against HIV/AIDS. When we returned from Swaziland in 2010, the church asked me to join their pastoral staff, and we moved to Oklahoma. In 2011, I was

ordained as an elder in the Church of the Nazarene.

The Church of the Nazarene has been present in Swaziland for over 100 years.

In my position I am able to do what I am passionate about – helping believers become Christlike disciples who are in love with Jesus and fully engaged in the world around them. And I can do this alongside an incredible team of pastors whom I love.

Swaziland has a population of just over 1 million people.

I am very aware that God is able to do “immeasurably more than we could ever ask or even imagine” (Ephesians 3:20)!

He has used wonderful people to make the “immeasurably more” happen in my life – many of whom belong to a special place called Mount Vernon Nazarene University.

With a total area of 6,700 square miles, Swaziland is slightly smaller than New Jersey.

60% of Swazis live on the equivalent of less than $1.25 per day.

Swaziland has the highest HIV infection rate in the world at 42%.

Funding for the Marking 20 Graduate Endowed Scholarship is being acquired to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Graduate and Professional degree programs at Mount Vernon Nazarene University. MVNU offered its first nontraditional degree completion program for working adults in 1993. In 1995, the Polaris site in Columbus was opened.

Over the past 20 years, MVNU's degree programs for working adults have undergone a number of changes, both in name as well as in the number and variety of programs offered. MVNU's GPS program, formerly known as EXCELL and later as Adult and Graduate Studies (AGS), now offers a variety of degree

Dr.

Cochran has taught at Mount Vernon Nazarene University for 14 years since arriving from Concord College in Athens, West Virginia. Prior to accepting this new assignment, he was serving as the Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities.

A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Cochran and his wife, Mary, have raised three boys, mostly in Mount Vernon. He enjoys running and soccer (“these days watching; in former times playing and coaching”), reading and watching old movies.

What are you passionate about?

“A few things. First, being personally responsive to God’s call to find my life through service in His coming kingdom. Second, Christian higher education, especially as it represents one way of responding to that call of service. Third, there’s my wife’s wonderful coffee cake, which she makes for me on special occasions. I could go on.”

Hamill has 24 years of experience in higher education, almost all of which have been spent at private, faith-based institutions. He has held numerous positions over that time as a faculty member and in a variety of administrative roles, including Department Chair, Assistant Dean, Associate Dean, Assistant Vice President, and Vice President at institutions such as Brescia University, Spring Arbor University, and Indiana Wesleyan University. Prior to entering higher education, he worked as a staff accountant, tax attorney, internal auditor, and general practice attorney.

Dr. Hamill and his wife, Ruth, have been married for 30 years and have two grown children. When he finds a few moments of free time, he enjoys running, bicycling, golfing, and playing the drums.

What is one thing people may not know about you?

“I played my last college football game in Giants Stadium.”

Rev. Peterson served the Church of the Nazarene as a youth pastor, young adult pastor and senior pastor before becoming Chaplain at MVNU. In his new role as Vice President for University Relations, he has responsibility for Development, Marketing, Church Relations, Alumni, Chapel and Information Technology.

Why did you pursue a career in higher education?

“I enjoy the opportunity to work, serve and journey with university students. Their lives are filled with hope and belief that God can do something great with them. There is deep certainty that what you are doing is making a difference.”

He and his wife, Katie, have been married for 22 years and have two sons: Cody, who is a sophomore at SNU, and Zachary, who is a senior at Mount Vernon High School. In his free time, Rev. Peterson enjoys running, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

What is one thing people might not know about Admissions and Enrollment?

“I think people should know that what often convinces a student they should attend MVNU is the interaction the prospective student has with the various staff and faculty on campus. When a prospective student has someone take an interest in them, welcome them to campus, and help them find answers to their questions, they really see the true character of the caring Christian people that work on this campus. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that community?”

Prior to arriving at MVNU in April of 2012, Dr. Schroeder worked as a coordinator of education and outreach at the Detroit Science Center, taught astronomy and directed the planetarium and observatory at Olivet Nazarene University, and served as the Vice President for Enrollment Management at Malone University.

In his current role, Dr. Schroeder oversees GPS Enrollment and Academic Services as well as Undergraduate Admission and Student Financial Services. His primary responsibility is to promote MVNU to all prospective students, to help them determine how to finance their education, and to help MVNU develop new programs.

He and his wife, Karen, were married in 1998, and they have one son, Reed.

“My hobby has always been astronomy.

I still love to pull out my telescope on a clear night. My favorite objects to observe are Saturn, Jupiter and the Moon.”

Rev. Noonen has been a familiar face on MVNU’s campus since 1995, when he became Assistant to the Chaplain for Mission and Ministry Opportunities under then-Chaplain Gary Sivewright.

Over the next 20+ years, he helped to expand MVNU’s missional reach in Mount Vernon, the educational region, across the United States and around the world. He has also been an influence on thousands of students who have discovered callings, passions and gifts in ministry, service and vocation at MVNU. Rev. Noonen and his wife, Raeschell, have five children and six grandchildren. He remains passionate about understanding what is going on in the world

today, prayerfully considering how we can connect to that world as a campus community, and inviting others to enter the suffering and despair of others as ambassadors of hope and healing.

What is one thing that most people might not know about you?

“I won the Wyoming Junior Golf Tournament in Cheyenne, Wyoming, as a freshman in high school on the first hole of a sudden death playoff by sinking a putt for a birdie. As I remember it the putt was really long with several breaks. I do sometimes have a tendency to embellish.

And there have been a lot of years between then and now. Suffice it to say, it went in the hole. I got a blue towel and a trophy.”

“I am extremely excited about this opportunity,” said Brock Schroeder, Vice President for Graduate and Professional Studies and Enrollment at MVNU. “With more than 12,000-square-feet of classroom and office space, this new facility will really help us meet the needs of our growing adult learning programs.”

Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Graduate and Professional Studies program is unveiling a brand new location on July 1, 2013. The new site, MVNU Columbus-New Albany, will serve adult and other non-traditional students seeking undergraduate and graduate degrees throughout the greater Columbus area.

Located at 5150 East Dublin-Granville Road, the expansive facility will replace MVNU’s existing Polaris and Gahanna sites and will be home to eight classrooms, four offices, two conference rooms, two serving kitchens, and an academic support services center. The

entire suite will be equipped with wireless and hardwired network capability. Each teaching station will offer the latest in technology, and one classroom will be equipped with state-of-the-art video conferencing capable of streaming specialized instruction from literally anywhere in the world.

Dr. John Packard will rotate in as chair of the Music Department this summer. MVNU wishes to thank Dr. Bob Tocheff for his service as chair of the department.

Joe Rinehart and Dr. Dean Abbott attended the 2013 National Religious Broadcasters convention with 5 MVNU students in Nashville, Tennessee. Joe and alumnus Jeremy Parsons (’04) hosted an educational session, "Impacting Culture through Mainstream Media." Jeremy shared about his work at the REELZ Channel in Los Angeles.

MVNU Juniors Zach Roys and Chris Runion participated in a 36-hour audio challenge and tied for 1st place. Chris Runion also received the 2013 Radio Award of Excellence for his PSA, "A Letter of Love," produced for CareNet Pregnancy Services of Knox County.

This is the first time MVNU has won this award since 2005.

Dr. Brett Wiley has been appointed Director of the Honors Program.

Dr. Yvonne Schultz has been named Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities following Dr. Barney Cochran's appointment as Vice President for Academic Affairs.

JETTER SCHOOL OF BUSINESS Jim Harriman presented the paper, “Preferred Stocks: An Underutilized Investment Secret” at the RISE13 (Redefining Investment Strategy Education) conference on April 6 at the University of Dayton.

Dr. Kevin Hughes, along with William Adams and Chuck Crain of Campbellsville University, presented a paper, “Improving Student Engagement in an Online Learning Environment,” at the Midwest Scholars Conference in Indianapolis on March 15, 2013.

Jim Parks and Dr. Margaret Britt had an article, “Leadership and Management: The Importance of Learning Ethical Leadership for Academic Programs and Organizations,” published in the December 2012 issue of Leadership and Organizational Management Journal.

Dr. David Skinner received an Outstanding Service Award from the American Society of Business and Behavioral Sciences at its February meeting in Las Vegas in recognition of scholarly excellence, commitment, and distinguished service to business and behavioral sciences, to the Academy, to students, and to colleagues.

The second Boesger Business Ethics Symposium was held Friday, April 12, in the Jetter School of Business. The featured speaker was Melanie (Brown) Miller (’93), who is currently an Associate Vice President for Nationwide Financial, which is a division of Nationwide Insurance, a Fortune 100 company headquartered in Columbus, Ohio.

MVNU’s Enactus/SIFE team was recognized at the regional competition on March 20 in Charlotte, NC. The team has earned the right to move on to the Enactus national competition. This is the 28th time in the last 33 years that MVNU’s Enactus/SIFE team has earned the right to compete at nationals.

SCHOOL OF EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL STUDIES Dr. Amy Biggs presented at the Ohio Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts conference with PEL students and graduates Laurabeth Brown Barnett, Sarah Stacy, Cassie Hill, and Ashley Bartlett on March 23, 2013 in Columbus. The topic was “Inherent Differentiated Instruction in Long Term English/Language Arts Project Planning.”

Lena Crouso collaborated on a study, "India: Affect and Literacy" with Rhoda Sommers and Sarah Hamsher (Malone University). The study proposal has been accepted as a round table discussion for "Concern for Affect in Reading" at the International Reading Association Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Candace Fox was installed as the President for the state affiliate of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences at the annual meeting held March 22 and 23, 2013, at Salt Fork Lodge.

Dr. Sharon Metcalfe presented a paper at the American Educational Research Association annual meeting on April 28, 2013, in San Francisco entitled “The Effect of Strengths Interventions on Pre-Service Teacher Dispositions During the Student Teaching Experience.”

Dr. Damon Osborne, Dr. Dean Goon, and Mickie Strausbaugh and graduate education students Tiffany Jackson and Ryan Thompson presented “Preparing Teachers for Online Teaching: A “Virtual” Field Experience” at the Ohio Confederation of Teacher Education Organizations.

Ardyth Stull was elected and installed as the Treasurer for the state affiliate of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences at the annual meeting held at Salt Fork Lodge on March 22 and 23, 2013.

SCHOOL OF NATURAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCES Dr. Paul Madtes has been accepted as a participant in the Seminar on Intelligent Design in the Natural Sciences as part of the Center for Science and Culture's Summer Seminars 2013 (Discovery Institute in Seattle, Washington). This event, which will take place July 12-20, 2013, is intended to provide extensive training in the Intelligent Design model for understanding science. Dr. Madtes has also accepted an invitation to be part of the plenary panel presentation for the Nazarenes Exploring Evolution conference on the campus of Point Loma Nazarene University. This event will take place January 23-25, 2014. His role will be to present the Intelligent Design model for the members of the conference.

Dr. Madtes was elected to serve a 3-year term as a CAAHP Board of Directors Memberat-Large. The Board is responsible for various activities and materials for advisors throughout the year, as well as planning the next regional meeting in 2015.

Dr. Dan Mosher co-authored an article entitled “The Utility of Isolated Crinoid Ossicles and Fragmentary Crinoid Remains in Taphonomic and Paleoenvironmental Analysis: An Example from the Upper

Pennsylvanian of Oklahoma, United States.”

The article was published in the July 2012 issue of PALAIOS.

SCHOOL OF NURSING AND HEALTH SCIENCES The University has received approval from the Ohio Board of Regents and the Higher Learning Commission to offer the RN program in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. This will give the University the opportunity to serve the community in a new way and possibly enhance enrollment.

Over spring break, MVNU nursing students and faculty went to Haiti to serve the physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of the people through Heart to Heart International.

SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY AND PHILOSOPHY Dr. Terrell Sanders announced his retirement at the end of the 201213 academic year. Dr. Sanders was granted Emeritus status by the Board of Trustees at its May meeting.

Dr. Jeanne Serrão, Dr. Matt Price, and Dr. Eric Vail attended the most recent meeting of the Wesleyan Theological Society on March 21-23, in Seattle. Dr. Serrão presented a paper on "Paul, Hagios, and Women: A Socio-Linguistic Analysis" and Dr. Price presented "Ordination and Power Relations: A Cultural Analysis from the Ritual Theory of Practice." Four students (Nick Berkiel, Jordan Kennedy, Mark Hansher and Hunter Hickman) also attended the meetings.

STAFF UPDATES Debbie McLarnan was honored at the Red Cross Heroes breakfast on March 5, 2013 for her accomplishments in bringing Project Lifesaver to Knox County. She was also recently honored as Advocate of the Year by the Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging.

ESTHER JETTER PRESCHOOL The Esther Jetter Preschool continues to spread the love of Christ to the community through the work they do with children. They recently held an Art Show with an attendance of over 230 parents, grandparents, and friends. In May, they offered a family picnic with over 200 in attendance.

GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL STUDIES Mount Vernon Nazarene University celebrated the 20th Anniversary of its Graduate and Professional Studies program with an open-house reception at MVNU's Polaris site on April 22. MVNU offered its first non-traditional degree completion program for working adults in 1993. In 1995, the Polaris site was opened. Graduates, students, former faculty, and area business leaders were invited to attend. "We are excited to celebrate this tremendous milestone," said Dr. Brock Schroeder. "There are so many graduates of our non-traditional programs living and working in the greater Columbus area, we wanted to do something special for them while at the same time honoring the important contributions so many have made over the past two decades."

Dr. Eric Vail has had a chapter accepted in a book on theologies of creation which will be published

by Routledge.

Mount Vernon Nazarene University was honored by the Knox County Chamber of Commerce with the Heart Award in recognition of the construction of the Buchwald Plaza. This particular award honors a Chamber member that supports the architectural aesthetics of the community. The citation from Josh Mandel, State Treasurer of Ohio reads in part: “Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s construction of Buchwald Plaza will provide a gathering place in Mount Vernon’s downtown and will strengthen the partnership between Mount Vernon Nazarene University and the Mount Vernon and Knox County communities.”

After several years of planning, nearly 18 months of construction, and what seems like a lifetime of waiting, Ariel Arena, MVNU’s brand-new athletic training facility is nearly complete! Located adjacent to the Prince Student Union, Ariel Arena will be the new home of Cougar Basketball and Volleyball and offer the entire MVNU community state-of-the-art cardio fitness and weight training facilities.

“I’m really excited about what Ariel Arena is going to mean to this community,” said Denny Taylor, MVNU’s Director of Facilities Management. At the heart of the 68,000square-foot structure is the beautiful center court with horseshoe seating for up to 2,100 spectators. When configured

for concerts and special events, the space will accommodate 3,000 individuals, immediately making it one of the largest event spaces available in Knox County.

Under the direction of Craig Ritchey of Simonson Construction, between 50100 men and women have been on site each day pouring concrete, laying brick, installing energy-efficient electronics, as well as installing the plumbing, lighting, flooring, walls, and a host of finishing touches.

With an anticipated completion date of October 1, the new facility will be formally unveiled on November 8, during the MVNU Homecoming celebration.

More than 100,000 man-hours have already been spent on the construction phase alone.

Approximately 300 parking spaces are being added around the arena.

The center court will be made of high-end hardwood maple.

The MVNU Cougar logo will be prominently displayed through the windows on the southeast corner of the building.

The Grapevine 1970s Barry Landis (’73) has been named a partner in Working Title Agency, a leading faith-based entertainment firm. Kimberly is the Director of the program that won the Student Engagement and Leadership (SEaL) award. The award was given in recognition of SEaL’s innovative and effective approach in meeting the changing needs of students. Kimberly began working at CSCC in April 2012.

Aaron Behr’s (’07) debut published short story is part of a collection just released by Columbus Creative Cooperative, available online at Barnes and Noble. Triskaidekan: 13 Stories for 2013 features all Ohio authors, including Behr. Behr graduated with a major in English and a minor in Radio Broadcasting.

Honorary Alumna Daniel J. Bunn (’74) went to be with the Lord on January 3, 2013.

He was a missionary with New Tribes Mission in Bolivia for 25 years. Daniel leaves behind his beloved wife Karen; his son Peter and daughterin-law Sara, along with grandson Jesse; his son Andrew and daughter-in-law Robin, along with grandson Noah; and his daughter Erika. He also leaves behind his sister Lois and her husband Harry; his sisters Ella and Claudia; as well as his beloved mother, Mary Elaine.

Timothy C. Spickler (’84) age 52, died Saturday, June 2, 2012, at Genesys Hospice Care Center in Goodrich. On May 4, 1985, he married Karen Sue Case (’84) in Tipp City, Ohio. Timothy graduated from Owosso High School in 1979 and received a B.A. in Business/Economics from Mount Vernon Nazarene University in 1984, where he also played baseball. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, and fishing. He worked in Purchasing and then Sales and Marketing with Export Corp. of Brighton, Mich. In recognition of 31 years of service equipping students in the field of Early and Middle Childhood Education, the University Alumni Association bestowed upon Marilyn Greer the title of Honorary Alumna.

Her dedicated service and commitment to literacy is dually noted by the hundreds of alumni she served and led as an educator and friend.

This award is presented to MVNU faculty, staff, or friends who have been influential in the life of the University and/or the Association and have demonstrated a continuing interest in MVNU. It was first awarded to Dr. Floyd Flemming, D.S. of the East Ohio District, in 1976.

Marilyn received the President’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 1990. At Homecoming in 2008, MVNU debuted the Marilyn Greer Children’s Literature Collection in the Thorne Library Learning Center.

Congratulations on this honor, Miss Marilyn, and thank you for your years of providing excellence in teaching as an example for future teachers. You have touched the future with your compassion, your competence, your commitment!

Hodges Chapel Auditorium for the Inauguration of Dr. Henry W. Spaulding II as the seventh president of Mount Vernon Nazarene University.

On the afternoon of November 8, we will celebrate the Grand Opening of Ariel Arena, MVNU’s brand new athletic arena.
