Downtown Urbana open space Urbana, Illinois Professor Valderrama March - April 2023 Individual Work

At the point of two roads in downtown Urbana, Illinois is a site that is not pleasing to the eye and with the help of plantings inspired by Piet Oudolf it brings visual interest to the area.

Concept Inspiration for design came from a severely cracked strip of concrete on the site which had moss growing in-between the cracks. This quickly became a main concept while also drawing inspiration from the Piet Oudolf plantings at the Laurie Garden and how it on the site of a large parking lot like this site.

Design The design features a luscious planting plan inspired heavily

by Piet Oudolf. The plantings are situated in-between platform that are made from recycled cement from the site and are connected at various points by wooden bridges.

A quiet and dark spot in-between two historic buildings would usually be a great spot to stop for a bit but in this case people would rather not have.

Round Barns sports fields and retention pond addition UIUC Campus Professor Hu - April 2023

With a need for recreational space and a retention pond, the south part of the University of Illinois campus offered a great spot to analyze and design using ArcGIS.

Analysis and Design Using elevation data to find the area most suited for a large retention pond and taking inspiration from the natural phenomenon of braided rivers.

Reflective Motion Ambiguous site Professor Valderrama February - March 2022 Partner Work

With a large amount of creative freedom at the finger-tips as well as concept collages and presidents to work with the foundation of this project is water and Ned Kahn inspired kinetic sculptures that play off sunlight and water motion.

Concept Using images from a site visit to a wooded park that have themes of sunlight reflection and rippling motion it was a clear step to take inspiration from the kinetic sculpture work of Ned Kahn.

Design Going with a radical approach of having the entire ground of the site be 1’ deep water with glass walkways for patrons would give an immersive experience.

Urbana Community Open Space

Urbana, Illinois Professor Sears November-December 2022 Individual Work Practically covered and situated in-between many buildings in downtown Urbana, the Boneyard creek is a great asset that in this project the goals for it are to give the community access to it, as well as use it for storm water management and creating a functional community space.

Concept The three concepts and goals that drove the design were changing elevation to give access down to the Boneyard creek, ease of movement through the site, and increased greenery.

Design The design features stepped access to the boneyard creek inspired by the river walk in Chicago with a walking bridge that connects the disconnected neighborhood to the downtown businesses. There are also additions of open green space for community events and gardens.
