While updating this year’s edition of the Annual Musician’s Guide, I noticed something I thought I’d share with you. Although I’ve known it for ages, this year it really hit me: record companies don’t readily give out their contact information. Nothing new, right? Thing is, this is no longer limited to major record companies. There are a few reasons. First off, many companies were created for one band. And they’re not recruiting. Second, no one wants unsolicited demos piling up in the mailroom, nor do they want their email clogged with e-kits and mp3s. Getting the perfect press kit ready is time consuming and expensive. In this day and age, can you really afford to send costly kits to unwelcoming ears? Do you have any idea how many people think they’re the next big hit? The golden age of being discovered and instantly signed to an awesome record deal is dead and gone. If you want to get noticed, you’re going to have to work for it. Laziness doesn’t pay off so do a bit of research before sending out that pile of kits. For example, kits sent to us for review instantly get split between the trash and recycling bins (or go straight to spam). Why? Just open our magazine: we simply don’t do reviews. Had you done a little research, your kit might have fallen on the right desk. And that’s not mine. The fact that it was blindly sent to us leaves it unopened and screams of laziness. I can assure you, no record company wants to deal with a lazy artist/band/manager. The Annual Musician’s Guide is a tool to help you in your musical endeavours. Use it wisely. Have a great summer!
En mettant à jour l’édition 2011 de l’Annuaire du musicien, j’ai remarqué quelque chose que j’aimerais partager avec vous. Même si ça fait longtemps que je le sais, ça m’a vraiment frappé cette année, soit le fait que les maisons de disques ne donnent pas volontiers leurs coordonnées. Vous direz qu’il n’y a rien de nouveau là-dedans. Mais cette fois-ci, ça ne se limite pas qu’aux grandes maisons de disques. Il y a plusieurs raisons qui expliquent cela. Premièrement, beaucoup de compagnies ont été créées pour un seul artiste et ils ne cherchent pas à recruter. Deuxièmement, aucune d’elles ne veut accumuler des piles de démos non sollicités ni voir leurs boîtes de courriels se remplir de dossiers de presse et de mp3. Créer un dossier de presse parfait prend du temps et coûte cher. À notre époque, qui a les moyens d’envoyer son dossier où on ne le regardera même pas ? Vous seriez surpris de savoir combien de gens croient dur comme fer qu’ils seront la prochaine superstar. La belle époque où l’on se faisait « découvrir » et où l’on se faisait offrir un contrat de disque incroyable est révolue. Si vous voulez qu’on vous remarque, vous devrez travailler très fort. La paresse ne paie pas, donc faites un peu de recherche avant d’envoyer vos dossiers de presse. Par exemple, les dossiers qu’on nous envoie pour être critiqués sont immédiatement triés entre la poubelle et le bac de recyclage (ou bien sont redirigés vers les pourriels). Pourquoi ? Feuilletez notre magazine. Nous ne faisons tout simplement pas de critiques. Si vous aviez fait un peu de recherche, votre dossier de presse serait peut-être tombé sur le bon bureau, pas le mien. Le fait qu’il nous a été aveuglément envoyé assure qu’il ne sera jamais ouvert et fait preuve de paresse. Je vous l’assure, aucune maison de disques ne voudra faire affaire avec un artiste, un groupe ou un gérant paresseux. L’Annuaire du musicien est un outil qui vous aidera à faire avancer vos projets musicaux. Utilisez-le judicieusement. Passez un superbe été !
