Survival has always depended on quick responses Driving the new Ford Mondeo should always be fun. But it also needs to be safe. So you will find a rigid chassis and low-friction steering for quick and nimble reaction. And high-performance anti-lock brakes which, together with Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), can significantly reduce stopping distances.

An ultra-strong safety cell with energy-absorbing zones front and rear provides a rugged survival compartment for you and your passengers, while the acclaimed Intelligent Protection System (IPS) keeps constant watch over the vehicle. If danger should threaten, IPS will assess the severity of the incident and respond in a split-second, activating the most appropriate safety system to provide reassuring passenger protection.

Key among these is the new 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine.

Delivering 155 PS, and a huge 400 Nm of torque** from just 1800 rpm, it’s the most potent TDCi diesel engine yet.

If you prefer petrol engines, our latest range includes an exciting new 3.0-litre 204 PS Duratec V6 petrol engine. With enhanced refinement and performance, it is offered in Ghia and Titanium models. An innovative Duratec SCi engine is also available. Featuring direct petrol injection, the 1.8-litre engine combines the low fuel consumption of a diesel with the responsiveness of a petrol engine.

Electronic Stability Programme (ESP)

Traction Control System (TCS)

Available on selected models, Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) incorporating ABS, is designed to help the driver restore stability during sudden movements, boosting car and occupant safety. For example, avoiding an obstruction in the road, a severe lane change manoeuvre, or counteracting adverse driving situations, such as understeer or oversteer.

If a front wheel starts to spin, optional TCS – available as part of the Interactive Vehicle Dynamics package, standard on V6 – diverts power to the other wheel. At speeds above 50 km/h, TCS is designed to automatically reduce engine speed to match road traction, making the ride smoother and safer.

Understeer is caused when the front tyres slip, forcing (arrow) the nose of the car to slide towards the outside of the curve.

As the front slides first in understeer there is more grip available from the rear tyres.

ESP detects this and applies either the left (arrow) or right rear brake.

The application of the brake induces a force (arrow) that acts in the opposite direction to the slide, returning the car to its correct path.

Oversteer is caused when the rear tyres slip, forcing (arrow) the tail of the car to swing wide.

As the rear slides first in oversteer there is more grip available from the front tyres.

New dual-stage airbags are designed to inflate at two different rates depending on crash severity and, in the case of the driver’s airbag, the position of the driver’s seat.

Pyrotechnic front seat belt pretensioners take the slack out of the webbing in the event of an impact, while load-limiting retractors release a small amount of belt to help reduce chest loading.

Mondeo’s BeltMinder system gently reminds the driver to fasten their seat belt.
