Dedication On behalf of the Class of 2015, we would like to dedicate this yearbook to Gail Sheffield, a member of our MUSM family whom we lost this year to cancer.

Gail Sheffield served as the Preceptorship Coordinator for the Department of Community Medicine, a position which she held since 2007, after transferring from the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Gail Sheffield’s contributions to the University were innumerable; however, the most significant contribution was her dedication to the Department of Community Medicine, the School of Medicine, and the University as a whole.

Because of the groundwork Gail laid, the Department of Community Medicine has a strong and reliable network of community preceptors who willingly give hands-on training to more than three hundred medical students. Gail was a true ambassador for MUSM. She fostered relationships with volunteer faculty by taking the time to speak with the preceptors, their office staff, and the students who visited them each year. Gail made it her mission to get to know the people she worked with on more than just a superficial level and she did so with respect and professionalism. And with the students, sometimes a bit of nurture.

In addition to her role as Preceptorship Coordinator, students often sought out “Ms. Gail” just so we could talk to her. Gail never turned away someone who needed to bend her ear, even when she had a mountain of paperwork to process. Yet somehow, Gail, after serving as a confidant, shoulder to cry on, sounding board, or pseudo mother-figure, managed to accomplish the impossible by conquering that mountain of paperwork even while fighting her battle with cancer. Gail was encouraging, supportive, and she will continue to be an inspiration to many.

About the Mercer University School of Medicine: Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM) was founded in 1982 with the mission of educating students to meet the health care needs of rural and medically underserved areas in Georgia. MUSM maintains extensive working relationships with many hospitals, private practices and volunteer organizations around the state of Georgia near our four campus locations - Macon, Atlanta, Savannah and Columbus.
