communities, many of who include women on the Cape Flats but who were never acknowledged by this government,” says Aisha.
Eddie Andrews, the City’s Deputy Mayor and mayco member for spatial planning and environment, said the naming of streets, bridges and public open spaces forms part of their efforts to build an inclusive Cape Town where all feel at home and serves the purpose of creating social cohesion and a shared community across different cultural, social and economic groups.
“We will put pressure on the city until all these names are removed...
The EFF have vowed to force the city to remove all these names Cassiem submitted a motion in the council and said that names such as Verwoerd Drive, Jan Van Riebeeck Avenue , Queen Victoria Road, DF Malan Street and even FW de Klerk Street must all be removed as they remind the country of the painful colonial and apartheid past.
“We will put pressure on the city until all these names are removed and they start showing respect and empathy for black people in SA who suffered during apartheid.
“We call on the municipality to remove and replace these colonial street names and statues with those of forgotten and deserving black ( African, Indian and Coloured) apartheid activists who fought for the struggle for the dignity of its people, within in its different
He said that any person including a councillor, wanting to propose rename a street ,bridge or any public open space must submit a formal application to the City of Cape Town and a preliminary list of alternative proposed names.
Should the council agree with the submission, the city will advertise the proposed rename for public comment for 30 days to allow all residents and interested parties the opportunity to submit their views.
Once the public participation has been concluded, the comments will be assessed , and the new names will be submitted to council for approval.
“Once approved, the old names will be replaced with new signage indicating the new, approved names,” said Andrews.

Trafalgar High school celebrates 110 glorious years!
South Africa’s first high school for people of colour, Trafalgar High School, celebrated its 110 th anniversary in December in the school hall. and Harold Cressy. Cressy was the first person of colour to obtain a BA degree at UCT and became the school’s first principal.
Principal Salwa Southgate said, “ we honour and pay tribute to our past teachers, legends and pupils and all those who made huge sacrifices to make Trafalgar this wonderful institution that it is today. at Trafalgar , delivered the keynote address. He made special mention of two of his teachers, Ernie Lennert and Hassan Bavasah, who helped his thinking as an adult. Both passed on earlier this year. He told the guests that part of Trafalgar’s significant past was its capacity to educate some of the stand-out individuals in not only the school’s history but South Africa’s history. Desai said, “It is remembered for the outstanding students like (writer)Alex
Laguma,(musician) Dollar Brand(Abdullah Ebrahim and many others whose names ring around the country and the world as ex-Trafalgarians.
“To make Trafalgar great again is to try to create that level of concern for future generations and future societies to live in. In our earliest years, we learnt about the Struggle, about the broader struggles of humanity. That made Trafalgar great, that made Trafalgar what it is today-that should be
remembered.
Part of the evening’s celebration included performances by the school’s band and the school’s choir which received a standing ovation for their rendition of The School Song.
The school is in the final stages of gaining national heritage status via an application the Trafalgar Alumni Association lodged with the Government’s South African Heritage Resource Agency (SAHRA) which assesses its merits.

My kids will love this. OMG can I taste more? Customers loved the smell, the crunch, the flavour and the consistency of the products. Customers came back for more tasters and to buy more product. Whilst all of the above was taking place, Mr Parker, CEO of Parker Family Foods, walked around our kiosk with a look of gratitude on his face. It was his vision to launch Instafry –Crave the Crunch – at a venue where customers could first taste the product, enjoy
Mr Parker believes in quality, taste and consistency. This is his recipe. Over and above the quality ingredients, the manufacturing plant boasts a state of the art ‘linear line’ production system. This means that all the quality raw materials move uninterrupted, on a conveyor system from one end to the other end. An engineer visited the manufacturing plant and was impressed by the very modern and highly mechanised setup. The exceptional high standard of food safety and hygiene impressed him even more.
To say Thank You to our community for their loyal support, Mr Parker gave away

Teachers honoured for their service
‘Honouring of our teachers in their Lifetime’ is an initiative by the Movement Against Illegitimate Leaders (Mail) that was first held on March 11, 2017, to recognise those teachers who had contributed to the education of our children. They seldom, if ever get the recognition that they deserve, yet play such a massive role in how we develop as people and how society is shaped. These teachers nurture the young through selfless service, commitment and dedication to their calling. What they give us is priceless they sometimes get taken for granted, but tackle their jobs with dedication ,determination, passion and love. They do what no other profession can- They produce doctors, scientists engineers, pharmacists lawyers and leaders. They are teachers, not any teacher, but those whose hearts and souls are connected to the profession. After the second event, on July 28, 2018,
the COVID-19 pandemic intervened and there was a four-year hiatus. The awards is the brainchild of Movement Against Illegitimate Leaders (Mail) The much awaited event was back this year, with 31 teachers being honoured on Saturday, October 15.
Over 200 people attended the event at the Glass Slipper Hall in Ottery as the teachers were acknowledged for their contributions to education in South Africa. Each teacher received a certificate and a medal from the organisers.
The prestigious Principled Principals’ Award went to Wesley Neumann who was fired by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) from his post at Heathfield High School for taking a stand – in order to protect the learners in his care – against the unreasonable demand to reopen the school during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Neuman received 3 books and R8000 with the award. The award was handed
over to him by Mariam Abrahams, the wife of the late Yusuf Abrahams who received this award at the last event held in July 2018 at the Venue in Imam Haron Road Lansdowne.
Yusuf Abrahams was the deputy Principal at Cathkin High School in Heideveld. The first recipient of this prestigious award was Brian Isaacs of South Peninsula High School.
A posthumous award was given to the late Omar Slamdien for his contribution for fighting for a just social order in South Africa. His eldest daughter, Aziza Slamdien received the award on behalf of the family.
A sterling keynote address was delivered by Frank Van Der Horst former president of South African Council Of Sport (SACOS). Mail member Abdurahman Khan said: “People often get honoured after they had died. We want to honour them while they are still alive.
