The restaurant patios are open for business, and we can all finally shove aside our excuses as to why we don’t want to go outside because of the weather. Beautify your outside space with outdoor flooring

ou’re tired of stepping onto dirt when you walk out your patio doors, and hosing off the patio furniture because it’s covered in mud after it rains is no longer an option. You need outdoor flooring. “Natural square cut flagstone has become more popular for patios and walkways. Clients are looking for something different. Square cut flag is a better choice over random because the joint space between the pieces are minimal making it harder for weed seeds to germinate. Random flagstone is a romantic idea, especially with growing moss or thyme between the joints, but you’ll forever be picking weeds out of them,” explains Michael “Mike” Scott, Owner of Michael Scott Landscaping & Design in Orillia. Stamped concrete is another option if you want to avoid weeding, but it might crack where the saw cuts are. “It looks good, but needs to be sealed to looklocalmagazine.com

maintain the look, or it’ll look tired after a few years and look more like plain concrete,” informs Mike. If you’re envisioning yourself lounging on a deck rather than patio, consider maintenance free options. Composite decking never requires staining or sanding, never decays or attracts insects, and only requires occasional cleaning with soap and water. “We’re definitely doing a lot more composite. It’s way better than wood, which expands, warps, and cracks. Composite comes in about the same price as cedar. When they first came out with composite, it wasn’t a great product. There were a lot of issues from it not being capped,” says Michael Scott, Owner of Simcoe Decks in Barrie.

A harder plastic capping is infused during the manufacturing process that provides composite decking with additional resilience against UV rays, daily living, and elements. In other words, the sun shining through your wine glass shouldn’t melt your newly installed deck. “It all comes down to hiring a proper installer and using a product that’s tested. You want to do your research, so you’re paying for a product that will last,” advises Scott. There’s also PVC decking, which is 100% plastic and could nearly double the cost of your deck. “It’ll never rot or deteriorate, or promote mould. You can use a mild detergent to keep it clean, or just take a garden hose to it, and wash it off,” says Scott. Even though pressure treated wood decks require higher maintenance, they remain one of the most popular choices. “We still like to use cedar for the handrails since there’s less chance of getting a splinter in your hand,” says Mike.

Water is your biggest enemy, so you want to ensure there’s proper air flow and no water seeping into crevices causing decay or mould, advises Scott. easons Centre for Grieving Children is the only organization in our region solely focused on assisting bereaved children and their families. They use a unique peer to peer support model that provides the opportunity for bereaved children and youth to work through their grief. Here is a Q & A with Courtney McFadden, Development Assistant for Seasons Centre for Grieving Children in Barrie. How important is Seasons Centre for Grieving Children for our community?

For a grieving child or teen, one of the greatest frustrations may be a lack of understanding or unsupportive people outside of their own family. They can be subjected to bullying and report feeling misunderstood and alone. Our programs aim to minimize the stigma attached to bereaved children and to provide them with an atmosphere where they can feel comfortable to express themselves with their peers. Tell me about the purpose of the centre and how community members can contribute.

Grief is a normal reaction to a death. The intensity of emotions may vary over time and can be triggered by significant events such as anniversary dates. Emotions can range from angry, confused, guilty, sad, lonely, scared, helpless, shocked, and frustrated. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to grieve in a supportive and understanding environment. One of the goals of our peer support groups is to provide participants with the necessary tools to promote grieving in healthy ways. This builds resiliency in our children. We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t charge a fee for our services nor do we receive government funding. Currently, our funding comes from the generosity of our community, foundations, grants, service clubs, 3rd party events, and corporate and private gifts. How long has the centre been established for?

Seasons Centre for Grieving Children opened its doors December 1995 in Barrie, Ontario. It was started by Christine Parker and Rowley Ramey in response to a much-needed service for children grieving the death of an immediate family member. looklocalmagazine.com

Seasons Centre is modeled after The Dougy Center in Portland, Oregon. Christine took training at The Dougy Center to learn how to start a centre and support grieving children and teens. It has grown from 8 groups in 1996 to 29 groups in 2019. We can accommodate a maximum of 150 participants per week utilizing the current model of evening groups. Seasons Centre for Grieving Children is dedicated in Loving Memory of Samantha and Jessica Ramey.

t’s more important than ever to support our local famers if we want to see more local fruits and vegetables in our grocery stores and food markets.

Barrie Hill Farms has provided our community with fresh fruits and vegetables since 1977, but the expense and imported competition has proven a challenge for the farm as they continue to offer more products in an attempt to keep the farm growing. “In 2013, I purchased a neighbouring farm. Before, I didn’t have enough land to grow crops such as sweet corn, so it’s because of the extra land we added more crops. We started an apple orchard between 2015-2017. We used to close the farm after Labour Day. When we open in spring, there’s always something to pick straight through the summer until fall,” says Morris Gervais, Owner and Farmer of Barrie Hill Farms in Springwater. It’s been a lot of work for the farm to establish their apple orchard, but they successfully harvested a small crop from 2017. Now they offer pick-your-own Ontario apples from the end of August through late October to early November. “I’ve been planting a bit every year. It’s very expensive to establish a high-density orchard. The whole apple farming industry is changing, so purchasing trees is difficult. It was my firsttime planting apples, and I had to learn how to handle apples. We’ve been doing blueberries and strawberries for years, so it’s a new venture for us as people find out about us growing apples. The trees are getting bigger each year,” explains Gervais. looklocalmagazine.com

You can also pick-your-own asparagus, peas, blueberries, strawberries, sweet corn, tomatoes, raspberries, and pumpkins at Barrie Hill Farms. “People will always want to come out and pick fresh, but it might shrink because we won’t be able to sell wholesale because it is going to imported food,” says Gervais. It’s tough for the farm to keep up with the demands of farming because of changing weather patterns, and the cost of labour. “I’m having to

reduce the number of crops I grow. If you can’ be efficient at doing it, then you have to stop doing it,” worries Gervais. The most important piece to the continued success of farms such as Barrie Hill Farms is supporting local farmers by buying directly from them, or by purchasing their products at local food markets. “Know your farmer, and know where you’re getting your food. The sad reality is you’ll have to pay a little more. Most farmers I know are just trying to hang on. If the market shrinks, there may not be a future for my kids,” says Gervais. Gervais says they’re continually working on ways to encourage people to visit the farm. “Every year we host the blueberry pancake festival. It started as a fundraiser for cancer care at RVH. ne of the best things about summer aside from longer daylight hours and lots of sunshine is the arrival of fresh local fruits and vegetables. Soon we can start picking our own produce such as strawberries at local farms. Barrie Hill Farms has been growing strawberries for over 40 years, and they’re getting ready for another juicy year of strawberry picking. “The normal everyday strawberry everyone is used to is a long-day strawberry. So, the plants I planted through winter will flower because of daylight hours. After June 21st they stop flowering. They’ll be ready for harvest by the end of June early July,” informs Morris Gervais, Owner of Barrie Hill Farms in Barrie. This season might get a late start considering spring is just sauntering in at a snail’s pace. “It’s going to be late for sure. Near the end of June. It’s still to be determined by the weather,” explains

Wendell McArthur, father of Glen McArthur who runs the McArthur’s Berry Farm in OroMedonte. The McArthur farm has been in the strawberry business for 43 years. Thanks to the arrival of the day-neutral strawberry to Ontario in the last 10-12 years, we’ll be able to pick strawberries right through until fall, says Gervais. “We have a continuous supply of fruit right until hard frost comes. Once we open for strawberries at the end of June, we can have strawberries right through until the end of October.” The day-neutral strawberries are cousin to the long-day strawberries and are often grown in California and Florida. They flower whenever it’s warm, so it doesn’t matter about the daylight. “As long as it’s warm, it flowers. After it flowers, it has strawberries. They’ll flower in July, and by early August, they’ll bloom. It’ll push out a flower by September and produce fruit by the end of September,” describes Gervais.

1 Put ice cubes into a blender or food processor and blend until crushed. 2 Add strawberries and almond milk and blend until smooth. 3 Top with Chia Seeds and Mint if desired. I used unsweetened almond milk and very ripe and sweet strawberries to get a decent sweet tasting smoothie. I like it that way.
