In these difficult times, it is nice to recall some of the

Could the Witch’s Yew Tree be European Tree of the Year? happy activities that went on in Cloghroe National School.

First Class students really enjoyed learning new skills in their hurling and camogie training from their GAA coach Timmy. There are definitely some potential future GAA stars amongst them. “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb…” and March definitely came in like a lion in 2020.

Budding engineers in 3rd class were very innovative designing, building and launching rockets during Engineer’s Week 2020.

Dr. Philip Murphy from the Department of Government and Politics visited Cloghroe NS recently. He came to speak to 5th class children about their experience studying the European Union through the programme which Dr. Philip and his colleagues created called “My Big Friendly Guide to the European Union”.

Captain America saves the day! Captain America aka Eoin Murphy saved the day for local woman Susan O’Sullivan last week, as she told us, “So when you have been self isolating with the past week because you have two kids under six with reduced immunity and who are classified as extremely vulnerable and you need to get their prescriptions from the chemist BUT can’t take them to the chemist with you, who do you call? You call Captain America aka Eoin Murphy, absolute legend, true hero and great friend! Up the road he tore with a boom box in one hand and a hurley in the other to ward off the coronavirus from our door.”

Delighted to congratulate the lovely Clare and Robin Lyons on the safe arrival of their beautiful twin nephew and niece Henry and Grace.

People in all corners of the country clapped outside their windows and doors, and made posters and waved flags, to thank our fabulous frontline heroes in the battle against coronavirus.

Gaelscoil Mhuscraí Gaelscoil Mhuscraí had an exciting start to the month of March. We celebrated Seachtain na Gaeilge with a wonderful céilí organised by Múinteoir Deirdre. Different classes joined together to celebrate with lots of dances including Ionsaí na hInse. A great time was had by all! We also celebrated Engineers’ Week at the beginning of the month. Pupils worked together and used their STEM skills to design and make boats, robots and bridges. Maith sibh! March marked World Book Day and in Gaelscoil Mhuscraí we love reading all year round. We took part in some special activities including paired reading between younger and older classes. Pupils also used their imaginations to dress up as characters from their favourite books. Third and fourth class loved their visit to the Lifetime Lab to participate in the the Explorers Education workshop. They learned lots about marine life and the different creatures that live under the sea. They also conducted lots of experiments in small groups, explored maps, examined and handled fossils of marine life and worked in groups to examine marine creatures living there. It was an exciting educational day! In sports news, first and second class commenced their Thursday swimming lessons. Weekly GAA and after-school Sciath na Scol training continued as usual while boys and girls from 5th and 6th classes played their first Sciath na Scol hurling match against Firmount NS. A girls team and a boys team also took part in FAI 5-a-side soccer competitions held at Mayfield United. Both teams acquitted themselves very well!

These are truly extraordinary times with the Covid-19 pandemic sweeping across the world and countries from Norway to Australia imposing lockdowns on its citizens. Ireland’s lockdown began with the closing of schools on 12th March and has become progressively stricter in the weeks since. Given the current social isolation, it is more important than ever to check in on friends and family who may be struggling to cope. Many are feeling anxious and stressed given the current situation and this anxiety may be heightened with the barrage of bad news in all media. The Pieta organisation provide free access to therapists for anyone who is experiencing suicidal thoughts or engaging in self-harm. Pieta also offers a suicide bereavement liaison and therapy service. You can find your local centre at Pieta.ie or you can call 1800 247 247, this number is staffed night and day. “We’re trying to reach out to the community to say we’re still open, that the service still exists for everyone in the community,” says Tom, Pieta’s Funding and Advocacy Manager. “We’re really trying to implore people to continue supporting us as well so that we can keep rolling out our one-to-one counselling, albeit that it will be phone therapy at this stage for the local centres or via our 1800 247 247 number.”

Pieta therapists helping people cope Suicidal thoughts and thoughts of self-harm can affect anyone at any time but clearly the current situation can exasperate the strain that a person is under. Jobs lost, reduced working hours, worry about personal finances, worry about loved ones, loneliness for some and the stress caused by lack of personal space for others are just some of the issues arising from these exceptional circumstances. For Pieta, this has led to a high volume of calls from people looking for help. “There is raised anxiety and the calls are coming in hot and heavy at the moment,” adds Tom. “We’ve a text number as well so people can text us if they’re finding it difficult to get through to our 1800 247 247 number. “They simply have to text HELP, and then their name and contact details to 51444 and we’ll engage with them as soon as we possibly can. That text number is supported by a therapist as well.” Pieta has helped almost 60,000 people since it was first established over fifteen years ago. It focusses on those who are in suicidal distress or engaging in self-harm. The team of professional therapists offer coping mechanisms to clients and look to offer a new perspective on any issues that they’re trying to overcome. The free counselling service provides a safe place for those who get in touch and can help get through their crisis.

Pieta services are provided free of charge with no hospital or GP referral required. The organisation is dependent on the public to support these services and Pieta are reaching out to the community to donate whatever they can in order to support the provision of counselling.

fudi&more, a Cork-based eatery with four and a Hidden Blarney gem wants to outlets put the large-scale grocery distribution and food production Spring in Ireland’s your step! facility has back answered call to ensure that crucial front-line medical staff receive the nutrition and care they deserve in the escalating COVID-19 emergency. Following on An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar’s statement that restaurant, delivery and takeout services provide a valuable service to the nation (and that Irish people get 25% of their calories from takeaway meals), Song Ye, owner of fudi&more, who has been operating successfully in the healthy take-away on and offline business for over four years, felt it was his civic duty to roll out a complimentary quick-turnaround take-away food and grocery offering to the already stressed front-line medical teams who are selflessly managing the COVID-19 crisis in our region’s hospitals. ‘My team of international chefs and nutritionists have already gleaned a stellar reputation for their innovative healthy and clean food options, sourced from the Cork local area, and prepared under strict health and safety guidelines as dictated under COVID-19. Safely prepared good food is our number one priority, and while we have enjoyed impressive repeat business to date, we are now very pleased to play our part in getting through this crisis by assisting those hard-working medical teams as they attempt to beat this awful threat that is endangering our society. We are ready to answer their call’ said Song Ye.

fudi&more’s take-away food and extensive grocery stock can be viewed through their app which can be downloaded from their website www.fudiandmore.ie. A click and collect system is also available. Medical front-line staff will be entitled to a €20 voucher per week for one month (€10 for meals and €10 for groceries including delivery). Those wishing to avail of these vouchers should contact fudi&more by emailing info@fudiandmore.ie or telephoning 021 4947888 and will need a scan or photograph of their medical staff ID card or another relevant documentation. These front-line staff should then download the app, register an account and fudi&more will put the vouchers in to their account each week for one month. Grocery orders will be delivered from 8am to 4pm daily, and all orders in the city centre will be delivered as early as the same day or at least the next day. Takeaway orders will be delivered from 4pm to 11pm and once processed, are guaranteed to reach medical teams in the hospitals within 30 minutes, while the general public’s orders will reach them within 45 to 60 minutes. Deliveries of groceries and meals cover all of Cork city including Douglas, Ballincolig,Blackpool,Wilton,Mahon and more. With the closure of restaurants and the increased difficulty for people to go out and buy daily essentials, this service will be particularly useful. This of course will be especially beneficial to self-isolating families, with essential grocery and food items available for safe delivery to their doorsteps, along with the healthy food takeaway options.

The local area voluntary community response team, with Cork City Council, is now up and running. A committed group of volunteers is available at all times to collect shopping and prescriptions, deliver meals, post letters, or simply lend a listening ear. It must be incredibly difficult for those over 70 to be cocooned in their homes and told not to leave, that’s not easy, but it is vitally important. This crisis is only beginning, this is no time to get careless, and we all need to take extra care of ourselves and each other. If we can do ANYTHING to help please call the dedicated community support helpline from 8am to 8pm seven days a week on 1800-222-226. And most importantly please stay at home and stay safe, if not for yourself then for those who love you.

So many people are enjoying the wonderful Waterloo walk with its new landscaping, and wonderful hedging which was commissioned by Blarney Castle Estate and laid by the talented Dave Burton. Thanks of course also to the wonderful Waterloo Renewal Group for their hard work which culminated in the extended pavement which was installed last year in conjunction with Cork County Council and Blarney Castle Estate.

Dripsey National School sixth class were a little disappointed last week as they should have celebrated their Confirmation day, so for that reason their creative school committee have decided to release tracks that the children recorded in February TODAY. We were dazzled by the 'Imagination' of 1st and 2nd class when we heard their song, 3rd and 4th class didn’t disappoint with their song 'Different' and, aptly for these unusual times, we loved the message in the song from 5th and 6th class 'Courage Will Overcome Fear.' The school is rightly so proud of these wonderful children! Thanks again to Garry McCarthy from GMCBeats Workshops who facilitated the rap, songwriting and recording workshops through the Creative Schools initiative.

So sad to read Eoin English’s story in The Irish Examiner about the loss of Steven O’Callaghan. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time. “A community has been left reeling following the death of a young man in freak scrambler motorbike accident close to his home in Cork. Steven O’Callaghan, 24, from Riverview Estate in Blarney, suffered fatal injuries on Saturday night when the motorbike he was riding struck a tree on a forest track which runs parallel to the Blarney-Tower road. The young man was thrown into the river Martin, which runs alongside the woodland trail. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The relatively straight woodland trail, which runs from Paud’s Cross and behind the Riverview housing estate, follows the route of the old Muskerry railway line and is used regularly by locals for dog walking, and by fishermen. But it has also been used by those involved in motocross as a scrambler trail for years. Neighbours said they heard the sounds of motorbikes driving up and down the trail for most of Saturday afternoon. Mr O’Callaghan was with a brother and some friends when the accident happened at around 8pm. While garda investigations are ongoing, it appears as if he lost control of the bike on a narrow section of the trail before the bike struck a tree, flinging him off his bike and into the river alongside. His friends raised the alarm and emergency services including gardaí, a HSE ambulance and a rapid response doctor, raced to the scene. But despite their best efforts, Mr O’Callaghan was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was removed to Cork University Hospital (CUH) where a post mortem is expected to be carried out. Gardaí are treating the incident at this stage as a tragic accident and sealed off the scene for a full technical examination by road traffic collision investigators. The bike has also been recovered for a garda inspection. The findings, as well as statements from those who were with Mr O’Callaghan at the time of the incident, will be included in the garda file which will be prepared for the coroner’s court in due course. Local Fine Gael Cllr Damian Boylan said the community has been left reeling by the tragedy - particularly given the restrictions on funerals which have been imposed as a result of the Covid-19 crisis. "Your heart would break for any family that has to go through a tragedy like this but especially at this time, with the restrictions in place, and when you can’t have a normal burial," he said. "Ireland does funerals and burials well. We have a great process that helps people along. "That’s all gone from us now. Our hearts break for this family and for his friends but people will rally to help them when this is over.”

Spring is in the air Despite these daunting times and the entire country doing its part to help flatten the curve, Spring is in the air all around us. While taking some exercise, within the permitted 2km, in the Regional Park in the past few days, we noticed the newly hatched bumble bees taking to the Willow and Gorse. They need as much food as they can get to help them grow for their busy season ahead. Dandelions are another very popular food for bees at this time of year. Cutting the grass in several areas throughout Ballincollig has been put back a few weeks in order to help provide them with this important food.

New planting being put in place at the entrance to the Regional Park by Cork City Council Parks Department.

Volunteers stand down As the entire country is in lockdown for the coming weeks and following the revised Government guidelines, Ballincollig Tidy Towns has suspended all its activities until further notice. We will look forward to getting back out there when the time is right. We have plenty projects in the pipeline for the months ahead. Things will be back to normal when we see the hi vis jackets of our many wonderful volunteers out in the streets again and our workers doing what they do best in the community. But for now, we are restricted to our own homes to ensure that we help stop the spread of the Coronavirus. Time on our hands With extra time on our hands at present we are encouraging families to get outside in their gardens and plant flowers, make flowerbeds, fill window boxes, flowerpots and planters with flowers. We are hoping parents will work with their children and add lots of colour then, if they get friends to plant flowers in their gardens the Estates will all look cheerful and lift people’s spirits. Choose pollinator friendly plants and / or wildflowers. These efforts will be rewarded in the annual estates competition later in the year and will get special mention at the annual awards night, so, come on everyone and get planting. Be sure to send in pictures of your efforts so that we may put them up on the website for everyone to enjoy. It is a great way for us to be together while we have to be apart. New look website Take a look at our revamped website www.ballincolligtidytowns.ie. It is bright and cheery and we are delighted with it. We are spending much of this lockdown adding to the site, especially to the Ballincollig Past page and want to make sure there is plenty for people to browse and enjoy. A book of images going back over the years was given to us recently on loan. The problem we now have is deciding which ones to omit, as they are all amazing, here are just two of the many photos you will find! The annual prize giving ceremony is a notable feature in the life of Ballincollig Community School. This is a photo taken in 1987 at the Eacht Award Ceremony. The Eacht Awards honour students who enrich the life of the school through their participation in class and extracurricular activities and their example to others. Photo includes winners, sponsors, Principal Mr. Dan Murray, Chairman of the Board of Management Dr. Carthach McCarthy and guest speaker Mr. Batt O’Keeffe TD. Ballincollig RFC September 1982

Great to read in The Echo the story of a local nurse who has returned to work on the wards of a city hospital, 28 years after she last donned her uniform to help respond to the COVID-19 outbreak. As The Echo told us, “Katie Murphy had been working as a diabetes nurse facilitator, but this week returned to the ward environment and started a new position in St Finbarr’s Hospital. In a new video released by Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, Ms Murphy explains how she was asked if she would be happy to come and work on the ward, and felt she could contribute to the response. “The staff have been very nice and supportive but obviously I need a lot of training in to get back and upskilled to be working at Registered General Nurse level. “I was sitting just doing my paperwork, I felt there was something more, better I could be doing in the current environment,” she said. The HSE is currently appealing to nurses to come back into the service. In the video, Maura Twohig, Director of Nursing, at St Finbarr’s Hospital said nurses were facing “the fight of their life”. She said that while it’s a frightening time to be a nurse and a health care worker that: “Our communities always need us, but right now they need us like never before."This is the fight of our lives. This is what we trained for. I’m proud of the staff who are standing with me,” she said. The Director of Nursing pointed out how staff had come back from retirement, and from other areas and said they were welcoming nurses back with open arms. “We’ve never needed staff so much to come back into the service because we need front-line staff. "We’ll welcome you with open arms, we’ll help you train in. You’re needed now more than ever,” she said. Cork Kerry Community Healthcare is asking healthcare workers who can join them to contact derek.ogorman or 021-4928750.”

Behind the Castle Walls

It feels like social distancing has always been here, and we have quickly found ways to safely chat with friends, family and even hold a local area task force meeting!

March Madness

I was thinking of writing this blog without any reference at all to our current situation, but it may be better to address the elephant in the room right at the start. Covid 19 has impacted our lives in ways that would have been unimaginable only a few weeks ago. What started as somebody else’s problem half the world away suddenly arrived in our own homes and families. It has certainly made me re-evaluate my priorities, and the one thing I hope is that we come out of this as a better, kinder society that has had chance to reflect. The gardens are currently closed to the public, but work continues behind the scenes, and we look forward to welcoming you all back soon. Here in the gardens we are experiencing the full flush of spring. There is new life all around and spring flowers are emerging in every corner. It lifts the soul to witness the rebirth of dormant buds as trees first leaves break out in search of the sun. Our giant Rhododendron arboreum ‘Cornish Red’ is in full flower at the moment in our Himalayan valley and is truly a sight to behold. Work never stops and this is a very busy period for us. We are mulching beds, finishing planting, weeding, seasonal pruning and of course grass cutting. In the walled garden we are busy with seed sowing, potting on and planting out fruit and vegetables. We just divided our rhubarb and made a much larger rhubarb bed. We are also extending our strawberry beds with a view to making a lot more ice cream for the summer. Jobs for the next few weeks include sowing sweet corn, runner beans and outdoor salad crops, carrots, parsnips and beetroot. Plant out onions, shallots and potatoes if you haven’t already. Plant indoor tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and tie in and pinch out new growth on the grape vines, hand pollinate indoor peaches to ensure a good quality crop, sow herbs, check for greenfly both indoors and out. A good tip for dealing with greenfly is mix some washing up liquid and water vigorously in a jug to make a lot of foam, then apply this directly to the infested areas to completely cover the aphids. It works very well! Our return trip to Vietnam last November has proved to be extremely rewarding and we have around 100 new plant species growing in our glasshouses. There are even several possible new discoveries in amongst them. As these plants are established in the grounds and gardens, they will provide a conservation lifeline for the future. Many of the species are endangered in their native range and it is increasingly likely that ex-situ conservation may be the only hope to ensure their survival. The wildlife on the estate is always something that visitors comment on. For somewhere so close to the city, we are very fortunate to have most of Ireland’s native animals still present. A quiet visitor to the river, lake or woodland walks can be rewarded with the site of an otter, kingfisher, red squirrel or even one of our elusive woodpeckers that have recently taken up residence. Visitors to the garden are venturing further and exploring new areas. Many locals, coming in for the first time, are amazed at what they find here. I going to go out on a limb now and state that over the last ten years we have created what is one of this country’s finest gardens. Once we reopen our gates, I would encourage you all to come Specialising in dermatology and see for yourselves.

Helping your child manage coronavirus worries

During this unknown and precarious time it is important to ensure we all address our worries or anxiety. The Pieta Clinical team have prepared tips on how to help your child manage theirs.

Normalise. Let your child know it is understandable to feel worried in times of uncertainty.

Empathise. Explore the anxious thoughts your child is having and

acknowledge how upset these thoughts must be making them feel. Inform. Share information from reliable sources in an age appropriate manner. Sensitively correct any misconceptions your child has. Define. Help your child by exploring the differences between hypothetical ‘what if’ worries and practical worries that can be problem solved. Problem solve. Help your child to step by step problem solve practical worries. If your child is worried about not being able to see their grandparent help them create a list of their options to deal with this problem. Postpone. Help your child let go of hypothetical ‘what if’ worries by moving their attention onto something they enjoy. Discuss postponing ‘what if’ worries about the future and dealing with worries based on the information we have now. If your child is worried about not returning to school this academic year, encourage them to postpone this worry until more information is available. When they know the facts, they can return to the worry and problem solve it. Triggers. Pay attention to what keeps your child focused on their worries and try to reduce this. This might mean limiting how often you watch news updates or reducing how much time you spend discussing the Coronavirus. Responsibility. Let your child know that the government and scientists are working very hard together to find solutions to our current difficulties. Help your child let go of any worries that aren’t their responsibility to sort out. Positives. Help your child focus on the good aspects of spending more time at home. Routine. In times of uncertainty creating a sense of normality through structure and predictability can have a hugely positive impact on a child’s anxiety levels.

News from Times Past with Brian Gabriel, Blarney & District Historical Society Death of Stoker 1st Class Thomas Dennehy and Battlecruiser H.M.S. Repulse 1941 On Dec 10th, 1941, just days after the Japanese attack on the U S base at Pearl Harbour, two British battleships, the modern Prince of Wales and First World War era battlecruiser Repulse were called to Singapore to assemble for possible operations against the Japanese. Amongst the crew of the Repulse was a young man, Thomas Dennehy of the Old Blarney Rd. He was the youngest son of Patrick and Mary Dennehy. He had six older brothers and one sister. Every day as Thomas walked up and down to school in Strawberry Hill, all he wanted was to join the British Navy. He made several attempts to join up but was turned down because of his age. He was a very good-looking young man with dark hair and brown eyes, a promising athlete. Thomas worked for a while for a cobbler near the North Gate Bridge. Finally, at age 19, he was accepted and began a few months training as a Stoker 2nd class at the Royal Naval Barracks, Devonport. His niece, Eileen Dwyer, who was five years old when he left, remembers him leaving the house with his kitbag over his shoulder. When his mother discovered he had forgotten his clothes brush, she sent her up the road after him with the brush and a tanner (sixpence) for the bus. Eileen caught up with him at the corner of the cottage acre, where the water pump was set back from the road. It had been Thomas’s job every morning to fill the two white enamel buckets with water for domestic use. He took the brush from her and gave her the tanner for herself. Amongst his mother’s papers I found a letter she received shortly after he enlisted, written by his Training Commander dated January 18th, 1939 just after Thomas’s 20th birthday. This letter told her that her son Thomas had chosen a magnificent career, with early facilities for improving his position, and that if he should indicate he was homesick in his letters home, she should give him cheerful encouragement and advise him to go and see his Division Officer. By December 8th, 1941, he was promoted to Stoker 1st class and serving onboard HMS Repulse a Renown-class battlecruiser of the Royal Navy, launched during the First World War. Repulse had an overall length of 794 feet 2.5 inches (242.1 m), a beam of 89 feet 11.5 inches (27.4 m) and a maximum speed of almost 32 Knots (35 m.p.h.). The construction, in 1916, cost £2,829,087 (£ 155,720,000 in 2019). It was travelling together with HMS Prince of Wales and their escorting destroyers under the East Indies Command, which was supposed to deter Japanese aggression against British possessions in the Far East. Comprising Force Z, they departed from Singapore to destroy Japanese troop convoys and protect the British army’s seaward flanks from Japanese landings and expansion into British possessions, particularly Malaya (current-day Malaysia) and Singapore, and to reinforce the British colonial garrisons in the Far East. However, the fleet was without any air support, which had been declined by Admiral Sir Tom Phillips, commander of Force Z. They were spotted by the Japanese during the afternoon of Dec 9th who shadowed them until dark. This led Admiral Sir Tom Phillips to cancel the operation and Force Z turned back having tried to deceive the Japanese that they were heading to Singora, a city in Songkhla Province of southern Thailand, near the border with Malaya. At approximately 1 a.m. on Dec 10th Admiral Phillips received a signal of enemy landings at Kuantan, Pahang, Malaya and correspondingly altered course so that he would arrive shortly after dawn. The crew of a Mitsubishi G3M “Nell” reconnaissance bomber spotted the British at 10:15 a.m. and radioed in several reports. They were ordered to broadcast a directional signal that the other Japanese bombers could follow. The first attack began at 11.13am when bombs (551 lb) were dropped from 11,500 feet. The battlecruiser was hit by several bombs, one of which exploded on the armoured deck. This inflicted several casualties and damaged the ship’s Supermarine Walrus seaplane which was pushed overboard to remove a fire hazard. Repulse was skilfully handled by her captain Bill Tennant, their anti-aircraft fire damaged five of the Japanese bombers, two so badly they had to return to Saigon. They managed to avoid 19 torpedoes; however, Repulse was caught by a synchronised pincer attack by 17 Mitsubishi G4M torpedo bombers and hit by four or five torpedoes in rapid succession. The gunners on the Repulse shot down two planes and heavily damaged eight more, but the torpedo damage to the ship proved fatal.

28 / Muskerry News

At 12.23 p.m. Repulse listed severely to port and quickly capsized with with the loss of 513 Officers and men. The Prince of Wales was hit by 4 torpedoes and sank at 12.30 p.m. The Repulse sank at 1.20 p.m. The final death toll was 840 men, the Repulse 513 and the Prince of Wales 327. 2,081 lives were saved by the escorting Destroyers, Electra, Vampire and Express and taken back to Singapore. No such luck for Stoker 1st Class 22-year-old Thomas Dennehy, caught down in the engine room and possibly killed by one of the torpedo explosions. The Survivors Association in the years since, have contacted the Japanese pilot who led the attack Lt. Haruki Iki, formerly of the Kanoya Air Corps, who accepted their invitation to England. He told them that in keeping with Japanese tradition, the day after the attack, he flew over the site of the battle. He dropped two wreaths of flowers into the sea to honour combatants from both sides who had died in the battle. One was for his fellow members of the Kanoya Air Group, while the other was for the British sailors whose display of bravery in defence of the ships had gained them the utmost admiration from all pilots in his squadron. Thomas Dennehy’s name is on panel 52, column 3, on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. There are many other brave Irishmen listed on this Naval memorial. He was among six Irishmen from the Republic of Ireland who were killed when H.M.S. Repulse sank. They were: Ahern, Patrick, aged 21 from Carrigaline, Stoker. Coughlan, Jeremiah Daniel, aged 36 from Crosshaven, Petty Officer Stoker. Dennehy, Thomas, Aged 22 from Blarney Rd, Clogheen, Stoker 1st Class. Duffy Patrick, aged 34 from Ballinamore, Leitrim, Stoker 1st class.Murphy, John Anthony, aged 18 from Bray, Wicklow, Able Seaman. O’Donoghue, Aged 25, from Carrigtwohill, Leading Stoker. Thomas was survived by his six brothers and one sister. They were: - Patrick, better known as Patie Dennehy of The Groves, Blarney, a stalwart of the Blarney Athletic and Cycling Club and the Blarney Development Association. Michael Dennehy, who spent his working life mostly in The Finishing Department in the Martin Mahony and Bros., Woollen Mills, Blarney. Brothers Jack and Ritchie, both emigrated and worked in the Ford Motor Company. Jack in Dagenham and Ritchie in Dagenham and Adelaide, Australia. His brother, Bartholomew (Barny), worked in Insurance in Cork City. His brother Jimmy, worked in Construction, also in Cork City. His only sister Mary Dwyer of The Groves, Blarney was a founder member of Blarney I.C.A., (Irish Country-women’s Association) and her son, Teddy, was a prominent member of the Blarney Athletic and Cycling club. His niece Eileen Dwyer who saw him off when she was five, remembers Thomas’s mother, Mary, sitting by the open fire in the cottage three years later, her hands shaking as she held a much wrinkled and tear-stained telegram telling of her missing son, in one hand, with a scroll of honour from King George VI in the other. A memorial was dedicated on 10th December 2011 at The National Memorial Arboretum, the UK’s national site of remembrance at Alrewas, near Lichfield, Staffordshire, United Kingdom. The memorial was dedicated in the presence of the few remaining surviving former crews of the ships. It is currently traditional for every passing Royal Navy ship to perform a remembrance service over the site of the wrecks. Today H.M.S. Repulse and Prince of Wales lie almost completely upside down in 58 and 68 metres depth of water and while both are declared protected war grave sites, it was reported in October 2014, by the Daily Telegraph, that they were both being “extensively damaged” with explosives by scrap-metal dealers. The 4 Medals awarded to Thomas Dennehy for his service in the Royal Navy were: 1939-1945 Star Awarded for service in the Second World War between 3rd Sept 1939 and 2nd Sept 1945. The Pacific Star Awarded for service in the Pacific Theatre between 8th Dec 1941 and 23rd March 1943 The Atlantic Star Medal Awarded to Royal Navy for 6 months in Atlantic between 3rd Sept 1939 and 8th May 1945, provided they had earned the 1939-1945 star. The War MedalAwarded for service during World War II between 3rd Sept 1939 and 2nd Sept 1945.II The above article, Death of Stoker 1st Class Thomas Dennehy and Battlecruiser H.M.S. Well done to SMGS leaving certificate student Liadh O'Neill who went for her first ‘pint’ shortly after her 18th birthday with her dad Rory in the local blood clinic in Cork recently. Rory gave his 51st donation on his 51st birthday at the clinic, and his daughter Liadh gave her first donation, what an amazing and inspiring pair, fantastic milestones for both and a lovely story for us all during these challenging times!

Congratulations to Team A (Jodie Dalton, Emma Desmond and Nicole Kidney) and Team B (Sarah Ahern, Ciara McCarthy and Sally O’Donovan) who represented SMGS in Limerick in the Junk Kouture Regional Finals recently.

Great to hear this about local man Tommy Nagle! “We have some positive news that may lift readers hopes and spirits during this very stressful and anxious time. We live in the area, my father who lives with us became very ill over three weeks ago, showed many flu like symptoms so he self isolated for 14 days, within those 14 days he took to his bed as he became alot worse, bad footing, fever, delirious and then along came the cough. After a week of being in bed it finally attacked his chest, my father had underlying chest issues so he couldn't breath and his chest was getting tighter and tighter. He was admitted to the Mercy Hospital where he tested positive for covid 19. He is 66 yrs old. We feared the worst and so did he, it was touch and go for two days , a very scary time. However he turned a corner with the care and attention of those amazing doctors and nurses at The Mercy Hospital and ultimately beat this horrible virus. He is now home safe and well. So for anyone who is going through this or nervous about getting it, stay at home, stay safe but there are happy endings too!”

An Post is rolling out two new services to support communities during the current COVID-19 crisis.

Love this good news story from The Farm, Grenagh. "One evening last week, this ewe had one lamb at 6pm. At 7pm we discovered she was trying to have a second lamb but was in difficulty and when we investigated we discovered that the lambs front legs were down 'inside' instead of coming out under the lambs chin as it should have been. On investigating further we discovered that a third lamb was on the back of the second lamb and there was no way we could see a positive outcome from this. So we called our vet and within minutes of her arrival in the lambing shed, with great skill, she delivered 2 more lambs from the ewe. The first of which had to be revived but is now doing great along with mammy sheep and the other two lambs. This little Jacob X Ewe also had triplets last year and is a great mammy."

‘Request a Check-In’ is a facility for family members to request a specific ‘An Post Check-In’ by the local postman or postwoman for an older or vulnerable person during the current ‘Cocooning’ period. You can register for the free ‘Request a Check-In’ service by completing the postal address and Eircode of the customer at anpost.com/Community-Support. These details will be sent to the customer’s local postperson who will call to the address. If that person has any specific needs for groceries or a prescription, the postperson will provide them with details of ALONE, the national charity ensuring personal support to older and vulnerable people during the current crisis, or where necessary, will contact ALONE on their behalf. Also launching today is An Post’s Newspaper Delivery service which will provide same-day delivery to households nationwide Monday to Friday. You can find out more about ordering your chosen newspaper through anpost.com or by contacting their chosen national or local newspaper directly by phone. Once you have signed up and arranged payment for their preferred publication, An Post will provide a same-day delivery service for the newspapers. Deliveries will be free of charge for older and vulnerable customers currently ‘cocooning’ during the COVID-19 crisis.

Thank you to our friends in The Lantern House for the very generous gift of 100 face masks for the volunteers delivering food and other services to our community. We really appreciate it.

If you see her give her a socially distanced wave and wish her a very happy birthday, as the one and only Esther Ruby is celebrating a very special birthday this week!

Coachford AFC celebrated their birthday online with some great archive photographs including a cup win, and one of those who started it all and put them on the road to where they are today. Kind, welcoming, community worker, activist, popular, social media lover, charity worker, wife, mum, grandmother and absolute lady. These are just a few of the words you could use to describe Esther, and you would struggle to find another person that loves her village as much as she does. She is a driving force within Blarney Tidy Towns with her enthusiasm, hard work and unwavering dedication. Esther is also known for her charity work with Cork Cancer Care among other charities. Whether it is getting up at the crack of dawn for Darkness into light, attending coffee mornings, helping with collections, and fundraiser events Esther is always there showing her support. Anyone who knows Esther knows that her family is her life and her roles as wife, mum and proud grandmother, as well as sister and aunt, are among the titles she holds most dearly.

Happy birthday Esther with love from us all!
