This collection offers a special selection of Knut Nystedt’s finest and most influential works for mixed choir a cappella.

The pieces appear in chronological order, accompanied by a biographical overview of Knut Nystedt’s life and work.

Kåre Hanken has written commentaries to each of the pieces and Harald Herresthal has written the biographical overview, with English translations by Beryl Foster.

At the back of the collection there is a list of Knut Nystedt’s most important choral works. We hope that this overview will inspire directors and choirs to discover and perform pieces by Knut Nystedt that are not included in this collection.

In the introductory biography, 23 selected choral works are discussed in chronological order, so that it is possible to follow Nystedt’s stylistic development from 1939 to 2002. In the discussion of the works themselves, choral conductors and others who are interested will find information on the background to the compositions, what Nystedt was thinking when he composed them, and how he wished the music to be performed.

Nystedt’s choral music is published by several companies in Norway and abroad. As Norsk Musikforlag has assumed the responsibility of being Nystedt’s principal publisher, the company will assist in obtaining and disseminating all his works.

Kåre Hanken (1943) was trained as an organist and worked for many years as a church musician in Ålesund. Here he build up a rich choral and concert life and was for a time also director of Ålesund music school, Norway He was secretary general of the Norwegian Choral Association (1991-2009) and was central to a conductors’ education project at the University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He is honorary professor at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth and, sine 2009, Extraordinary Professor at Stellenbosh University, South Africa.

Harald Herreshal (1944) is organist and professor emeritus of the Norwegian Music Academy. He has been organist in several churches in Oslo and has given organ recitals at home and abroad. Herresthal is reagarded as one of Norway’s foremost researchers in Norwegian music. He has published a series of books with Norwegian and foreign publishers and promoted musical knowledge on all levels as performer, author and teacher. Herresthal is an honorary doctor of the University of the Arts, Berlin.
