READER 1

THE HISTORY OF LIFE on earth has been a history of interacon between living things and their surroundings To a large extent, the physical form and the habits of the earth’s vegetaon and its animal life have been molded by the environment. Considering the whole span of earthly me, the opposite effect, in which life actually modifies its surroundings, has been relavely slight. Only within the moment of me represented by the present century has one species—man—acquired significant power to alter the nature of his world

READER 2

There was a strange stillness.

Song number 1,2, and 3 can be perfor med as individual works. It is also possible to perfor m the whole work without the read par ts in between

1. What I am I must become

READER 3

AS MAN PROCEEDS toward his announced goal of the conquest of nature, he has wrien a depressing record of destrucon, directed not only against the earth he inhabits but against the life that shares it with him

*

READER 4

TO HAVE RISKED so much in our efforts to mold nature to our sasfacon and yet to have failed in achieving our goal would indeed be the final irony. Yet this, it seems, is our s ituaon. The truth, seldom menoned but there for anyone to see, is that nature is not so easily molded

READER 5

There was a strange sllness. On the mornings that had once throbbed with the dawn chorus of robins, catbirds, doves, jays, wrens, and scores of other bird voices there was now no sound; only silence lay over the fields and woods and marsh. * = Bar 1-2 in number 2 "My feet "

READER 6

WE STAND NOW where two roads diverge.

*

The road we have long been travelling is decepvely easy, a smooth superhighway on which we progress with great speed, but at its end lies disaster.

The other fork of the road the one ‘less traveled by ’ offers our last, our only chance to reach a desnaon that assures the preser vaon of our earth.

READER 7

There was a strange sllness. On the mornings that had once throbbed with the dawn chorus of robins, catbirds, doves, jays, wrens, and scores of other bird voices there was now no sound; only silence lay over the fields and woods and marsh. The apple trees were coming into bloom but no bees droned among the blossoms, so there was no pollinaon and there would be no fruit.
