“Sundial”isamusicalmeditationonthepassingoftime.Thestructureofthispieceisintendedtomimicthe passingofhoursinaday,from6:00AMto6:00PM,sunrisetosunset.Eachhourisassignedamusicalmotive,and thetwochoirstaketurnsintroducingthesemotives.Thepiecemovesthrougheachkeyareainthecircleoffifths, toimitatethecyclicalnatureofourlives.ThetextforthispieceisacollectionofLatinmottoswhichwere engravedonsundials.Thepracticeofengravingmottosintosundialsbeganinaroundthe16thcenturyand invitespassersbytoreflectonthepassingoftimeandthebrevityoflife.
