Notes from the composer: As I searched for texts for this piece, it quickly became evident that one of the "standard" Christmas texts simply wouldn't work. Frankly, I had become disenchanted with the idea of setting any of them. I decided to reach out to Brian Newhouse (Classical MPR) to commission him to write a new Christmas poem, and what he crafted was exactly what I was looking for. His poem ties together both the joy of the season and the reverence of the Nativity story. There were so many opportunities in this text for expressive composing--I got to work right away! The poem ends with a reference to Mary giving birth to Jesus as angels sing overhead. Around the same time that I was composing this section, I stumbled upon a text by Hildegard von Bingen that I thought would pair well with the end of Brian's poem as a sort of "tag". The final product is the piece before you.

A few performace considerations: Throughout the first half of the piece, there are various triple and duple divisions of the beat. As you sing, consider the character of these rhythms. Triple divisions should have a bit of a bouncy lilt in them, and duple divisions should feel a bit more evenly structured (See Figure A above). There should always be a sense of forward momentum in your sound, even in the slower, more sustained sections.
