A Widow’s Song for J.

Your body says this. The thin hair on your head says this. The varicose veins in your legs say this. Your skinny limbs, the brown spots on your leg s. In Nepal, a little girl is given the nut from a bellfruit tree and married to a Hindu god so she will never be a widow, never sleep in the thin embrace of remembrance.

If you should die, where is the place that I will call home? It has taken me so long to believe in refuge, to trust the sincerity of need and ardor. If I sleep in your arms, let your arms be a promise; my breath weaves a rope that pulls around us, binds us. There was never a ceremony when I was a boy,

no promises made to a spirit that I would never be alone; when I am old, be old with me.
