With its graceful collision of soul and psychedelia and sometimes ’70s funk, it’s a body of work that invites both selfreflection and wildly joyful movement, and ultimately sparks a quiet transcendence. Ecstatic and heavy-hearted, gloriously shambolic and deeply purifying, U kin B the Sun is the outcome of a certain personal transformation that Ford has experienced in recent years. www.facebook.com/frazeyford 16 SEPTEMBER

BRÌGHDE CHAIMBEUL & AIDAN O’ROURKE :: At CCA, Glasgow. Winner of the Horizon Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2019 – Brìghde Chaimbeul is one of Scotland’s fastest rising stars. A native Gaelic speaker, her style is rooted in her indigenous language and culture, but draws inspiration from a variety of piping traditions such as from Cape Breton, Eastern Europe and Ireland. Her debut album ‘The Reeling’ has had an extraordinary response since it’s launch at a sold out Celtic Connections show at the start of 2019. She was joined on the recording by violinist Aidan O’Rourke from experimental folk trio Lau, who also produced the album. Working closely with Aidan O’Rourke, Brìghde has devised a completely new way of arranging for pipe music that emphasises the rich textural drones of the smallpipes; the constancy of sound that creates a trance-like quality in the tunes. She has collaborated with many established artists over the years, including Ross Ainslie, John McSherry, Paul Meehan, Aidan O’Rourke, Carlos Nunez, Martin Green, Allan MacDonald. www.aidanorourke.net www.brichaimbeul.com

Fergus McCreadie Trio Set for Elgin Concert GIGnotes :: The Fergus McCreadie Trio play St. Giles Church, Elgin on

Saturday 29 February. 7:30pm. Tickets cost £15 and are available from IT Central, South Street Elgin and @ www.forteproductions.co.uk

Forte Productions is delighted to announce that Fergus McCreadie and his band will perform in Moray next month and are hoping to pack out Elgin’s St. Giles Church. Fergus McCreadie’s trio have been leading the exciting young wave currently energising the Scottish jazz scene and audiences can expect a great night of top class musicianship and jazz favourites from the multi-award-winning pianist and his band. “There’s a good feeling around jazz right now. There are a lot of good young players coming through, especially at the Royal Conservatoire in Glasgow, and they’re attracting interest from music fans as well as the press. It’s exciting to be part of that.” He added “We’ll be playing music from our first album, which won the Album of the Year title at both the Parliamentary Jazz Awards and the Scottish Jazz Awards last year, as well as tracks from the new album we’ve just recorded. It’s influenced by Scottish folk music as well as the American and Nordic musicians I’ve listened to a lot. We try to make it as

exciting and melodic as possible and we put a lot of passion into it.” “We’re really looking forward to playing in St Giles Church. I know it from working on the Let It Snow Christmas show and it’s a great venue. We like playing in churches. Quite a lot of jazz concerts happen in churches or former churches, like the Queen's Hall in Edinburgh, and we enjoy playing in them.” Fergus McCreadie One of Scotland’s most exciting young talents, Fergus was born in Jamestown, near Strathpeffer and grew up in Dollar. His band has performed at the Glasgow, Edinburgh, Fife, Aberdeen and Islay jazz festivals regularly and has toured in Norway, Sweden, Lithuania and Estonia. The group has also appeared at Oslo and Stockholm jazz festivals and the Ronnie Scott’s International Piano Trio Festival. His trio with David Bowden (bass) and Stephen Henderson (drums) also made the shortlist for the Scottish Album of the Year Award 2019. Tickets are on sale now.

Scottish artist Amy Duncan writes emotive songs, combining intimate vocals, guitar, electric upright bass, synths, and piano creating a distinctive folk-pop sound. You can expect skilful and tasteful use of the instruments and vocal loops to provide multilayered textured arrangements for her affecting lyrics and haunting songs. Amy’s debut album 'Pilgrimage' was released on US label Plain Recordings in 2006 after they discovered her home recordings on My Space. Amy self-released a further 2 albums achieving TV placements on BBC 3 Lip Service and the Netflix version of 'Charmed'. Creative Scotland funding made it possible for Amy to work with producer Calum Malcolm (The Blue Nile) leading to Amy's 4th album 'Cycles of Life' being released on Linn Records (2013). As a result Amy was chosen by Showcase Scotland as one of two Scottish acts to perform at the Eastern Canadian Music Alliance (2014) and was part of the Made In Scotland Showcase at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013 and 2014. Amy went on to record a further two albums with him including 'Undercurrents' (2016) which was released to great praise in 2016 and was featured in Folk Radio UK Top Ten Albums of 2016. The album was described as "a crystalline sound world, with confidently poised delivery and bittersweet delicacy" by The Scotsman and “spacey, introspective, contemplative, acoustic pop with touches of jazz and of classical minimalism” by fRoots. The follow-up release 'Antidote' (2017) received 4**** reviews in both Maverick & R2 Magazine as well as receiving widespread airplay. Amy is currently working with an animator on a series of music videos inspired by her abstract photography, to be released gradually throughout the year, culminating in an album release in summer 2020. For the first time in over a decade, Lau present an entirely acoustic tour. The pioneering Scottish folk trio have always experimented with sound and form; the results have always been complex and thrilling. Already acknowledged as phenomenal live performers Lau arrived at a new creative peak with 2019's Midnight and Closedown (Reveal Records). Now 2020's Unplugged concert tour sees traditional music's most celebrated innovators strip away their banks of electronics, loops and wild effects. The trio of Kris Drever (guitar, vocals), Martin Green (accordion) and Aidan O'Rourke (fiddle) feel drawn to a more raw and plain-speaking aesthetic. The approach is subtler, less about spectacle, more about close listening. In brash and polarised political times, here is the poetry of real instruments and considerate music making. www.facebook.com/LAUband
