Edinburgh Youth Music Festival was awarded a grant of £500 from Superact and Creative Scotland to organise an 'Our Big Gig' event in Edinburgh. 'Our Big Gig', the UK’s largest community music festival is heading to Scotland in from 11 to 13 July.

Funded by Creative Scotland as part of the Glasgow 2014 culture programme, 'Our Big Gig' will see the country unite to celebrate local music at community events, showcase new and existing talent and give people the opportunity to have a go at making music.

The festival has its two main stages in the spectacular setting in front of Lews Castle in Stornoway, and this year is introducing an acoustic stage for the first time. There will also be concerts in An Lanntair arts centre and in rural parts of Lewis and Harris.

“I am happy playing as many festivals as we can. HebCelt is a first for us so I can't wait to get up there and make a noise. Am Mòd Nàiseanta Rìoghail (The Royal National Mòd), Scotland’s biggest Gaelic Cultural Festival, will take place in Inverness this autumn for the first time since 1997. Now in its 122nd year, the event is the most important festival of the Gaelic language in Scotland. It is a signature event in the Highland Homecoming celebrations.

2014 will also see the biggest Fringe event ever take place alongside the competitions. This will include concerts, book and CD launches, music sessions, poetry, dance and other art forms of every description. Around twelve pubs have signed up to providing traditional Celtic music in their venues, while street theatre will take place across the city. The fringe will encompass Urquhart Castle on the shores of Loch Ness to Fort George and the Culloden Visitor Centre and all areas in between.

Organised by An Comunn Gàidhealach, one of the world’s oldest and most respected national Gaelic organisation, the nine day spectacular will take place from 10-18 October. It will feature competitions in Gaelic Music and Song, Highland Dancing, Sport, Literature and Drama. It will bring thousands of competitors and spectators from throughout Scotland, the UK and from all corners of the globe including USA, Australia and Canada to Inverness. Acts confirmed for the opening concert include Skipinnish and the up-and-coming Scottish folk band, Gria.

John Morrison, chief executive of An Comunn Gàidhealach, said: “We are delighted to be returning to Inverness for the first time in 17 years and to be bringing the biggest Fringe in the event’s history."

Fringe highlights will include the Saturday night Fiddlers’ Rally at Eden court. Hosted in association with Blazin in Beauly under the musical direction of Bruce Macgregor of Blazin’ Fiddles, the concert will feature over one hundred fiddlers including world renowned artistes, plus local groups, it promises to be the most spectacular fiddle event in Scotland.

A special concert to commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War I on Wednesday afternoon will be a showpiece event, with musician Erik Spence, creating a piece of music to go along with the poem Bantrach Cogaidh written by the late Rev John Macleod. Dingwall Gaelic Choir and Lochardil Primary School Choir will contribute.

Other highlights include performances by Skerryvore, singing super group Cruinn and the talented Glenfinnan Ceilidh Band. Lunchtime performances in the historic Inverness Town House by artists including Ewen Henderson, Barluath, and renowned clarsach player Catriona Mackay are not to be missed, while musical performances at the area’s stunning visitor attractions Urquhart Castle, Culloden Battlefield and Fort George will also take place.

Eden Court in Inverness does celebrations very well and has the perfect excuse in September as Blas 2014 marks the 10th anniversary of the Blas festival in the Highlands.

The East End Social and Chemikal Underground are delighted to announce an extended line-up for their The Last Big Weekend festival.

It will be the culmination of over six months spent enlivening the East End of Glasgow – from community workshops to church performances; from gigs in care-homes to day-long street parties – and a late-summer blow-out that's set to celebrate excellent music from round the corner and around the world.

The Last Big Weekend takes place in Glasgow's Richmond Park on Saturday 30 August and Sunday 31 August and is part of the official Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme and Homecoming Scotland 2014.

Sunday’s bill has been curated by legendary club night Optimo and fellow party-specialists Numbers.
