Trust’s #saveourvenues campaign said, “It’s an absolute surprise and honour to be invited to be a Patron for the Music Venue Trust. When I looked at who else they have as patrons I was in shock. The past few weeks have been difficult for absolutely everyone on the planet and I was thinking of ways I could do something positive and all I really have to do that with is music. When I came across the MVT and found out what they do for Grassroots venues it was a no brainer to put something together to help them and spread awareness. Every artist starts off in these grassroots venues, including all the other MVT patrons, however big they've got, and without them you have no music business. I’m glad to be part of such a great initiative and will do my bit to ensure that the venues survive and can have us all back playing in front of people before too long.”

Joining KT Tunstall and Be Charlotte are Luke La Volpe, Honeyblood and The Jellyman’s Daughter. All 5 Scottish patrons performed on 19 June in support of over 60 venues across Scotland Stina Tweeddale aka. Honeyblood said, “I honestly don’t know where I would be without the grassroots venue touring circuit in the UK. Not only as an artist but as a music lover, these places are the building blocks of the musical community. A venue is so much more than a room where gigs take place - it’s walls soak up every show that goes on within it, creating a history of live music right before our eyes and ears.” Emily Kelly and Graham Coe of The Jellyman’s Daughter said, “When we first formed The Jellyman’s Daughter we cut our teeth gigging in a wide array of Edinburgh’s amazing venues. Getting these first few gigs under our belt was essential in the development of our sound and learning how to perform live. Sadly so many of those venues have had to shut their doors. In the last few years alone we’ve lost The Electric Circus, Studio 24 and The Picture House (which turned into a Spoons) to name just a few that were once the heart and soul of our wee music scene. Also, when touring internationally, approachable independent venues are vital in providing a platform for us to reach new audiences. If we don’t save these venues, where are up-and-coming bands going to get their start, and how can we nourish and promote fresh new talent? This hugely exciting collaboration will feature a selection of fantastic musicians from Scotland and further afield, and has come together in response to the need to unite the Solas community virtually following the cancellation of this year’s physical festival. Karine Polwart, Raghu Dixit, Sam Lee, Dave Hook (Stanley Odd), Sorren Maclean, Hannah Fisher, Ankna Arockiam, Mischa Macpherson, Finlay Wells and Lies Damned Lies will all lend their voices to the piece. The late Michael Marra’s beautiful song ‘All Will Be Well’ is a hopeful anthem for our times, with the chorus refrain ‘All will be well, you may do as you please, no harm will befall you, while I live and breathe’ sung together by a diverse group of singers from the NHS Trust choir, including Covid-19 survivors. It will be broadcast live to Solas Festival attendees on Facebook and YouTube this Saturday the 20 June at 6.50pm, and the full video made available online to share afterwards. Edinburgh Folk Club :: 'CARRY ON STREAMIN' On 10 June, Edinburgh Folk Club launched Carry on Streamin, its response to the gap in live performance left by the COVID-19 measures, and a fund-raiser to help performers of traditional music in Scotland who have lost their incomes. Carry on Streamin will offer a 20-30 minute YouTube performance, including numbers by featured folk acts and some footage from the archives. Linked to the performance will be a downloadable newsletter with articles, reviews, guitar tablature and news from the folk world around the country and abroad.

The goal of this endeavour is to raise £10 000 for the Paddy Bort Fund. The fund is a legacy of the late “Paddy” (Eberhard) Bort, former Chair of Edinburgh Folk Club, who died suddenly and prematurely on 17 February 2017. A larger than life character, Paddy, who arrived from Germany in 1995, was passionately dedicated to the traditional music of Scotland and Ireland. A lecturer in politics at the University of Edinburgh, he was academic co-ordinator of the Parliamentary Interns programme at the university’s Academy of Government. He campaigned through his writing and through initiatives such as the Scottish Rural Parliament and Nordic Horizons for the improvement in local democracy. For Paddy, this professional activity ran seamlessly into his equally committed campaigning to keep alive the folk tradition, on which he was equally learned. After his death, his colleagues in the Edinburgh Folk Club discovered he had quietly put his hand in his own pocket to promote his passion, so it is apt that the legacy fund should bear his name.

The Paddy Bort Fund is, therefore, an appropriate tribute to a man who left the world of Scottish folk richer than he found it. Since it was set up, the fund has disbursed small sums to help performers who find themselves in unforeseen crisis of the “an elephant sat on my guitar” type. Things have just become a whole lot more serious, however, and the world of folk music is now in crisis, with touring performers losing their always modest incomes, and some of the small and remote venues, which are the life-blood of the traditional music tour, in danger of closing permanently.

With the enforced interruption to its weekly meetings, lately moved to the Ukrainian Community Centre in Royal Terrace, the Club is moving on-line with the dual purpose of bringing the music and the news to all who are interested, while raising money through a PayPal link to ensure the continuing health of this key element of national heritage. The title, Carry on Streamin, is a play on “The Carrying Stream” the annual November festival instigated by Paddy Bort in memory of that other legend of the Scottish folk scene, Hamish Henderson. Platform 18 announce online festival with Jackmaster, Domenic Cappello + Fraz:ier
On Saturday 4 July, Glasgow's Platform 18 invite you to join an online stream headlined by Jackmaster b2b Domenic Cappello, Frazi.er, Maria Airam b2b Lunarplatz and founder Ivan Kutz. The stream will be raising funds for the charity Scottish Association for Mental Health, who Platform 18 have worked with from the start, and is a great way to come together and forget whatever woes you may have during these strange times. The stream runs from 4pm until 9pm and plays out on the same day that this year's festival was meant happen with world class headliners Richie Hawtin, Floorplan, Fjaak (live), ANNA and more all playing one visually spectacular main stage in a unique
urban setting. Platform 18 offers something new and fresh for Glaswegian house and techno lovers and has done since 2013. It comes from the mind of a promoter who has been putting on events for over 12 years and gives you an intimate connection with DJs: everything is set up so the raver and DJ are in sync, the selectors can join punters in the crowd for hugs and even high fives during set and they have done many times in the past, which always makes this a very special and standout occasion. 2021 Line Up Announced For Bella Featuring Headliners Nile Rodgers & Chic, Van Morrison, Emeli Sandé, Plus The Fratellis, Passenger, Shed Seven and Much More
Following on from the cancellation of the Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival 2020, ‘Bella’ can confirm today that it has managed to secure 100% of the previously announced 2020 line-up. This includes headliners, legendary multi-Grammy Award winning composer, producer, arranger and guitarist NILE RODGERS & CHIC, along with the Scottish artist with one of the most recognisable voices in pop, soul and R&B, EMELI SANDÉ. They will be joined by the final Garden Stage headliner, another truly legendary figure in the music industry, the iconic singer-songwriter VAN MORRISON. Born in Belfast in 1945 Northern Irish singersongwriter VAN MORRISON has a vast collection of awards to his name including a knighthood, a Brit Award, an OBE, an Ivor Novello, six Grammys, and an entry into The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Over the course of his career his has penned some of the most memorable songs of the 20th century including the classic hits, ‘Brown Eyed Girl’, ‘Moondance’, ‘Jackie Wilson Said’ and ‘Gloria’. He is an artist who is a true legend in every sense of the word and his debut at Belladrum is set to be a standout moment in the festival’s history.
In further line-up announcements, Scottish Indie Rock band THE FRATELLIS will make their Belladrum debut. Their debut album ‘Costello Music’ released in 2006 led a Brit Award for British Breakthrough Act and included the anthemic singles ‘Chelsea Dagger’ and ‘Henrietta’. The band will release their sixth album ‘Half Drunk Under a Full Moon’ later this year. SHED SEVEN will be making a very welcome return to the festival having last appeared way back in 2009! Covid-19 calls a day on Lindisfarne Festival 2020 .... with new dates announced for 2021 In light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it’s with regret and a heavy heart that organisers of the popular Lindisfarne Festival, have made the difficult decision to postpone the 2020 event to next year from 2-5 September 2021. The three- day music and arts extravaganza, which was due to take place for the sixth consecutive year from 3 rd -6 th September had plans to welcome over 5,000 festival goers to Beal Farm in Northumberland. Headline acts including Groove Armada, Craig Charles Funk and Soul Club were scheduled to play alongside a diverse line up of 200+ musicians, comedians and performing artists over its 10 unique stages. Katie O is the stage name of singer and musician Catherine O’Halloran. Catherine has enjoyed an illustrious career to date, performing alongside a host of big names and prestigious orchestras as well as lending her ethereal vocals to numerous albums and movie soundtracks.
Making the bold move to focus on her own music in early 2017, Katie O was born and her debut EP release Chamber is a completely self-composed body of work and is much-anticipated by audiences and fellowmusicians alike. With four self-composed tracks, Chamber deals with themes of isolation and dissatisfaction from a uniquely female perspective. The songs are honest and insightful and explore motherhood, societal expectations and being professionally underestimated. Having grown up in Asia as part of a large musical family, Katie O has always been singer, surrounded by the music of her mother’s Irish folk band. Since moving to Glasgow, she has been a part of many esteemed projects, including Craig Armstrong’s 2015 LP ‘It’s Nearly Tomorrow’ and a number of high-profile movie soundtracks.
Having collaborated with musical royalty AR Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire) where Catherine added her vocals to the Oscar winning movie ‘The Golden Age’ starring Cate Blanchett, Catherine has gone on to sing on movies such as Oliver Stone’s As a classically trained vocalist she has also worked as a vocal coach and appears ‘World Trade Centre’ and ‘In Time’ starring Justin Timberlake. Catherine also features on the 2016 album ‘It’s Nearly Tomorrow’ by the Scottish composer Craig on BBC Scotland as part of the new TV show ‘Love Song’. Armstrong (The Great Gatsby, Moulin Rouge). Katie O says on her inspiration for the EP: “I wrote all four of these songs just after having my children. With no family nearby and a partner who works away, it was a weird time of feeling isolated but yet having a totally chaotic mind. I was trying to make sense of my purpose in the world. “The EP is about the feeling of not being seen or heard - being underestimated professionally in ‘Wind and Stars’ and personally in ‘After the Party’. Then the rage that accompanies dissatisfaction with where you are in life shines through in ‘Chamber’. “However, the song ‘Moments/Just Like These’ celebrates the fleeting, but incredibly important moments, when you have the space to be heard and can reflect on the most amazing things; the sunset, the sky, the kick inside…” Three years in the making, Chamber features a stellar line-up of accomplished musicians, each with their own wealth of achievements and awards. Playing on the four-track EP are: Dave Philips – Guitar, Andrew Gifford – Double Bass, Aileen Gobbi – fiddle, Steve Forman – percussion and Fraser Stone – drums. The ominous, fuzzed-out tone of a single guitar note. A foreboding piano line. Esther Swift’s haunting, intricate harp. All of these combine to devastating effect on ‘Harpy’, a dark, swirling tale about facing up to what you’ve become with unflinching honesty, and the first single taken from Stonehaven musician Fair Mothers’ new album In Monochrome. “I’m just trying to see the state of me,” says Fair Mothers, aka Kevin Allan, of the song’s autobiographical nature. Featuring cello from acclaimed Scottish composer-arranger Pete Harvey and guest vocals by Glasgow-based US artist Faith Eliott, it’s an intense listen that quickly disintegrates, leaving Swift’s elegant harp work centre stage. There’s a restless, garish fairground quality to the song. A sense of defiance too. “So old man in the mirror / What you got left?” Allan asks, a sentiment that fits
perfectly with In Monochrome’s themes of family, love, and maintaining those relationships which mean the most to us. The accompanying video, directed by Scottish BAFTA-winning filmmaker and musician Adam Stafford, is equally as stark and dramatic. Drained of all false colour, shot in black and white in the countryside of Ayrshire, it depicts a mysterious stranger and a violent killing that, much like the song, poses as many questions as answers. “Adam initially had in mind an Nosferatu Vampire, self-medicating with ‘magic bullets’ (pills) each morning as he tries to see himself in his bathroom mirror,” says Allan. “This turned into a murderous road trip, which Adam inferred from the lyrics. It was his translation completely; I had to go back to the song to see how he had done it, and it was there.” It’s the perfect appetiser for the brooding variety inside In Monochrome, the follow up to February’s Separate Lives and the culmination of a series of sessions at Edinburgh’s Happiness Hotel studio with producer and Song, By Toad label boss Matthew Young. It continues Allan’s fertile collaborations – alongside Swift, Harvey, and Eliott, In Monochrome also features Canadian artist Dana Gavanski, and even a brief cameo from Lost Map’s Johnny Lynch, aka Pictish Trail. “Most of my songs need another voice – a woman's voice – and I'm incredibly grateful to have worked with Katheryn Joseph in the past, and now with Dana and especially with Faith,” says Allan of his approach to working with others. And while Separate Lives exposed a sense of deep isolation, In Monochrome reflects the search for a way out, for those connections that bring true technicolour and a range of feeling; good and bad and everything in between. “I have such a strong sense that it’s getting very late for us, or maybe just getting late for me,” adds Allan. “And that it has to start with knowing myself. Because it’s principally me that’s lying to me. Christ knows why that is.” Released in August 2020 via Song, By Toad, 'In Monochrome' will be preceded by ‘Harpy’, out on 19 June. The closing chapter of two years of work, it’s Allan’s richest, most emotionally resonant collection of songs yet. And while selfdeprecation runs deep, he’s answered Harpy’s protagonist eloquently – he has plenty left, and a unique, heart wrenching way of saying it.
