Music Venue Trust Welcomes £2.2 Million Fund From Scottish Government For Grassroots Music Venues Fund will stabilise venues in short term and prevent permanent closures #saveourvenues Scottish grassroots music venues will receive £2.2 million from Scottish Government to stabilise venues and prevent permanent closure. Announced on Friday by Economy Secretary Fiona Hyslop, the fund was agreed with Music Venue Trust and will support grassroots music venues until October.

get supportive messages every day from music fans aching to see us reopen. They say you don't know what you've got ‘til it's gone, but thanks to this great news we are still here!" MVT previously called upon Westminster for an immediate cash injection of £50m for UK GMVs and a cut in VAT on tickets and orchestrated the #saveourvenues campaign which, to date, has raised £2.5m in donations and grants. They were also key players in the ongoing #letthemusicplay campaign with the wider live music community, which has seen a huge outpouring of support from artists and the public.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic MVT have taken numerous, proactive steps to help venues cope Music Venue Trust (MVT), which represents hundreds of grassroots music venues across the with and mitigate the impact of the crisis UK and 74 member venues in Scotland, has been including: working with Scottish Government since venues Offering practical tools and information so the were forced to close due to lockdown in March. GMV sector knew exactly what it had to do, what support was out there and how to get it. “Music Venue Trust is delighted to have agreed this funding with Scottish Government, and we thank them very much for their commitment to grassroots music venues. This funding will stabilise venues in the short term and prevent permanent closures, and we can begin to plan towards reopening every venue safely" Beverley Whitrick, Strategic Director, Music Venue Trust.

Appointed Coordinators across the UK to ensure venues were fully supported to access every lifeline they could, including supporting grant

applications, attracting matched funding, creating opportunities and activating fundraising events. Delivered information, advice and guidance direct to every level of government and to the sector so the size and scale of the problem could be fully understood Directly intervened in potential venue closures, reaching agreements with landlords, services and suppliers to give the sector the chance to make it to 30 June and providing financial support to venues to pull them back from the cliff edge

Grassroots music venues are the ‘research and development’ hub of Scotland's music industry and invaluable community hubs. The internationally established definition of GMVs can be found here. MVT expect venues which fit these criteria to be eligible for the fund which is intended to cover fixed costs which include rent, non-furloughed staff, servicing debts and utilities. Nick Stewart from Sneaky Pete's in Edinburgh said: "This provides a lifeline for venues like Sneaky Pete's whose future hangs in the balance. With no income in the pipeline and no reliable timeline for opening, venues' staff have been distraught, especially as other enterprise or arts funding schemes were inaccessible to them. This will provide wellearned relief for these venues, and not before time. At Sneaky Pete's we can begin to plan our recovery now, so that we can bring back music to our community who have really rallied behind us in an incredible way. We're over the moon that we've been assured we can survive to eventually get back to making more paid performance opportunities for musicians. I think this time has really seen audiences realise how much they value their local music venues. We http://bit.ly/issuu-googleplay

Specifically writing to Fiona Hyslop, as the Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Fair Work and Culture the Taskforce is asking for support for commercial music businesses, who have been seriously impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic through no fault of their own. However, the commercial music industry has unique needs and operates within different parameters from the not-for-profit and subsidised sector and urge the Scottish Government to address these as a matter of priority before it is too late.

Highland arts community launches fund for eighteen young creatives New creative fund aims to support & inspire emerging artists at this time when the arts are under threat Application closing date 27 July @ https://hyah.co.uk/ The current Covid19 situation has put a huge strain on the arts world across the globe and fearing that there would be a talent drain as emerging artists are put off a promising career in the arts, the Highland arts community has come together to provide significant funding for young people to support them with their creative ambitions. Highlands Youth Arts Hub (HYAH), a consortium of arts organisations led by Fèis Rois, has launched ‘Creative In Your Community’, a brand new arts fund which offers 18 young artists from across the Highlands the chance to secure £1000 to support them with a project which will maintain and develop their creativity and inspiration whilst also engaging with their local community. Each of the 18 artists will also receive three days of mentoring from well-known, successful industry professionals, including; renowned Gaelic singer, Julie Fowlis, filmmaker Thomas Hogben, performance maker Robbie Synge, award-winning visual artist Joanne B Kaar, theatre maker Jenna Watt and Highland writer, Anne MacLeod.

Winner of The SAY Award 2019, Auntie Flo said: “The Scottish music scene is world renowned and The SAY Award does a great job of highlighting its breadth of talent. Winning The SAY Award was proof that artists who are properly independent, that work across diverse cultural boundaries and between different scenes and genres can be rewarded for their efforts. I hope my winning it inspires an even more diverse range of submissions this year.” Sacred Paws, winners of The SAY Award in 2017, said: "Winning an award is definitely not something we ever imagined for ourselves! We felt extremely validated and uplifted by the Scottish music community through The SAY award. It really helped us feel less like outsiders in the music industry as well as encouraging us to find confidence in ourselves and in our music." Offering one of the most lucrative prize funds in the UK, The SAY Award winner will collect a £20,000 cash prize, whilst nine runners up are each awarded £1,000, making the award a truly remarkable cornerstone of the Scottish music industry, celebrating music of all genres on one bold and unifying platform. Year on year, The SAY Award supports the Scottish art industry by commissioning an emerging designer to create bespoke prizes for the 10 Shortlisted artists, offering a creative complement to the award’s musical counterpart. Each year, the physical awards accentuate the enduring links between music, art and design in a country overflowing with talent.

Founded in appreciation of the album as an artform, The SAY Award has illuminated the Scottish music scene since its inauguration in 2012, recognising the commitment, credibility and ambition required to create and release an album by the entire ecosystem of musicians, songwriters, producers, sound engineers, labels and more. Recognising an album as greater than the sum of its parts, the award regards albums as stand alone artworks in their own right and as culturally significant and artistic achievements. Creative Scotland’s Jamie Houston said: "Scotland's dynamic music scene is brimming over with talent in every genre from those at the top of their game and a new generation of musicians painting a glowing picture for the future. "The SAY Award provides a important spotlight for that talent, and in a year when so much is changing, there has never been more important time to celebrate and support the depth and breadth of music-making here. "I'd encourage everyone to buy albums, discover great new music and vote for your favourites from indie, hip-hop, jazz, classical, trad and everything in-between.” Sweetdram co-founder Daniel Fisher says: “We started 54EP to bring creative communities together, and despite this strange turn the world has taken, we’ve managed to find a way to push that objective forward. Although we’re obviously gutted not to be able to launch 54EP in its intended format as a live music venue, we’re very excited to convert it into a vast affordable space for artists to create and perform without compromising their health or safety. New music as an outlet is more critical now than ever – so hopefully this will go a small way to helping the grassroots music scene in Scotland thrive in spite of what's going on." Sweetdram co-founder Andrew MacLeod Smith says: “Music is massively important to us – we’ve got the meatiest sound system and biggest vinyl collection at any distillery in Scotland, probably the world – so having the opportunity to partner with The SAY Award for the second year running is particularly special. As independent flavour-driven distillers who make spirits that sit in the spaces between conventional categories, we appreciate how difficult it can be to strike the right balance between creative conviction and commercial imperative. Thanks to the great work being continuously carried out by the team at The SAY Award, and the SMIA in general, we hope that Scottish musicians can find increasing ways to stay loyal to themselves artistically and still afford the rent, especially during these strange times. Of course it’s a shame we can’t all celebrate in person this year, but we’re hugely excited for the virtual party the team have cooked up: a much-needed and well-deserved audial distraction for everyone who has suffered through the past few months.” Sarah Mitchell, Director of Membership and Communications at PPL says: “PPL is proud to support The SAY Award, which provides a platform for the musical talents and styles that Scotland is home to. Last year’s genre-blending winner, ‘Radio Highlife’ by Auntie Flo, epitomised this, with its diverse range of influences reflecting the creativity of its maker and the country that produced it. As submissions for this year’s award open, we look forward to listening to the best of Scottish music and wish every entrant the best of luck.” Rowan Campbell, the General Manager of Summerhall says: “As a champion of Scottish music and creativity, Summerhall is pleased to support The 2020 SAY Award in this re-imagined way. It feels to us that there has never been a more important time to support and empower artists, performers and musicians to keep doing what they do best, create and inspire us all, until we can get back to what we all love, LIVE MUSIC.” Andrew Parsons, MD Ticketmaster UK, said: “Having partnered with The SAY Award since 2017, we’re really excited to be on board again this year - now more than ever it’s essential we come together to support the industry. We’ve witnessed Scottish artists make incredible strides over the last 12 months, the pool of talent is remarkable, and I have no doubt we’re going to see a very impressive Shortlist.” Previous winners of The SAY Award include Auntie Flo ‘Radio Highlife’ (2019), Young Fathers ‘Cocoa Sugar’ (2018), Sacred Paws ‘Strike A Match’ (2017), Anna Meredith ‘Varmints’ (2016), Kathryn Joseph ‘Bones You Have Thrown Me And Blood I’ve Spilled’ (2015), Young Fathers ‘Tape Two’ (2014), RM Hubbert ‘Thirteen Lost & Found’ (2013) and the inaugural winner Bill Wells and Aidan Moffat ‘Everything’s Getting Older’ (2012).

Skerryvore :: album - 'Live Across Scotland' Released :: out now @ www.skerryvore.com/skerrystore/

Multi-award-winning band Skerryvore released their blistering new album, 'Live Across Scotland' on 10 July to celebrate their 15th anniversary.

2007 for this live album. Before lockdown, the eight-piece band had been due to host their very own one-day festival branded ‘XV’ against the iconic backdrop of Inveraray Castle, Argyll, to mark the milestone year.

Capturing the energy and atmosphere of the band’s live performance, Skerryvore’s first ever live album features 15 tracks recorded at muchloved Scottish venues during the band’s recent 2019/20 winter tour.

Martin Gillespie of Skerryvore said: “We’ve been planning to record a live album for years so our recent winter tour that took in venues across Scotland that we love playing in just felt like the perfect opportunity.

Skerryvore’s signature trad-rock fusion is captured in full swing at towns the length and breadth of Scotland, all the way from Aberdeen’s Tivoli Theatre and The Ironworks, Inverness to Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall, Stramash in Edinburgh and The Albert Halls, Stirling.

“This album is our first fully live album recording and we wanted it to really capture the sound and atmosphere of our live shows. The album feels like a fitting way to mark our 15th anniversary and is all the more special now as we find ourselves, like so many others, missing live gigs and festivals. Live Across Scotland hopefully gives fans a taste of the live show atmosphere in the meantime.”

The album also features tracks recorded at unforgettable shows in a host of smaller locations including Portree, Fort William, Forfar, Darvel, Selkirk, Dunoon and Killin. Live Across Scotland captures the electricity and undiluted joy of a Skerryvore gig. Their powerful sound makes it easy to see why they have a Alan Scobie (keyboards). loyal fanbase worldwide and have been twice awarded ‘Live Act of the Year’ at the Scots Trad Together they fuse their traditional west coast Music Awards. roots with pop, folk and country influences to create their own high-energy brand of Formed by brothers Daniel Gillespie (accordion) contemporary Scottish music. and Martin Gillespie (pipes, whistles and accordion) along with Fraser West (drums) and Over the last 15 years the band has performed Alec Dalglish (guitar and vocals) on the Isle of in more than 25 countries worldwide including Tiree in 2005, Skerryvore’s line-up includes across the UK, Europe, USA, Canada and Craig Espie (fiddle) and Jodie Bremaneson Australia – but they chose their most recent (bass), Scott Wood (pipes and whistles) and Scottish tour to record tracks dating back to

Dave Milligan :: album - 'Momento' Released :: 28 August @ www.davemilligan.bandcamp.com

Best known in the jazz world as the pianist and arranger behind the award-winning trumpeter Colin Steele’s success over the past twentyfive years and for his own acclaimed trio (described by The Guardian as “cracking”), Dave Milligan is a musician of remarkable versatility. As well as working with a prodigious list of jazz musicians, including Art Farmer, Scott Hamilton, Peter King, Joe Temperley and Charlie Mariano, he has featured with ace session guitarist Larry Carlton, percussionist Trilok Gurtu and Nashville gospel-soul legends the McCrary Sisters and has a parallel career in traditional music with international fiddle band String Sisters, Scottish folk orchestra The Unusual Suspects and ongoing projects with harpist-singer Corrina Hewat. He also collaborated, as musical supervisor, with Mark Knopfler on the stage musical version of Local Hero. The music on Momento resulted from meeting Italian bass and drums team Danilo Gallo and U. T. Gandhi on an international project with Colin Steele at Edinburgh Jazz Festival. Milligan enjoyed playing with the Italians so much that, when a Creative Scotland artists bursary allowed him to travel to Cavalicco in the Italian province of Udine, he booked three days in ArteSuono recording studio with engineer Stefano Amerio and invited Gallo and Gandhi to join him.

It Was About You has something of the folk ballad about its construction, a song without words. The retreat march by Pipe Major John MacLellan that the father of the Scottish folk revival, Hamish Henderson adopted for his stirring Freedom Come All-Ye anthem is carried here on a skipping, effusive jazz groove with notably agile, expansive and percussive piano playing from Milligan. :: photo by Brian Vass

Over the two days, the trio recorded everything they played and with the expert recording of Amerio, who has worked on over forty albums for the prestigious ECM Records label, they finished up with twenty tracks, some completely improvised, some Milligan originals and some improvisations based on folk songs.

By contrast, Sandy’s 70th, the album’s one solo piano piece, is a tender waltz, a birthday tribute to Milligan’s father with echoes of Erik Satie. Made in the Border closes the album with a smart, assertive melody initially taken up by Gallo but passed on to Milligan, who was indeed “made in the Borders” (near Hawick) and who adds conspicuous urgency in his closing jabbed piano chords.

“Something changed for me over those few days in Italy – not so much in terms of my musical Momento features seven of those tracks, vocabulary or technique, but in terms of where beginning with the slowly unfolding and the music comes from in performance, and deceptively titled Going Nowhere.
