MVNY Presents All's Well Sisters Dec 7, 2025

Page 1

WELCOME TO THE SECOND CONCERT OF MUSICA VIVA NY’S 2025-26 SEASON!

Musica Viva NY has a proud and longstanding tradition of nurturing young artists—a legacy that includes early-career presentations of Renée Fleming, Samuel Ramey, and the Aeolus Quartet. In recent years, we have continued to champion emerging voices from diverse backgrounds, among them Bangladeshi-American soprano Shabnam Abedi; jazz pianist Joe Block; Mexican mezzo-soprano Guadalupe Peraza and her multicultural project Mexamorphosis; and rising opera artists from Teatro Real’s Crescendo program.

Tonight, we continue this tradition with a distinctive, jazz-inflected twist. We are delighted to present our own soloist Katie McCreary and her ensemble, All’s Well Sisters, in their first professional live performance.

This evening offers a fresh take on vocal harmony—different from our traditional choral sound, yet perfectly in tune with the warmth and wonder of the holiday season. In Katie’s own words:

“Holiday time IS music time. It’s woven into the fabric of the season, and we’re thrilled to be part of that tapestry for the Musica Viva NY Winter Concert. We’ll be performing some standards, a brand-new jazz sextet arrangement of ‘Lo How a Rose,’ and our original piece ‘Blanket of Snow.’ The song is all about how New York never stops—except for those first quiet hours after a heavy snowfall, when even the city that never sleeps gets to snuggle under a ‘Blanket of Snow.’ Sweet, isn’t it?”

As many of you know, Musica Viva NY is preparing for a landmark tour to Spain, with performances at the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Cathedral of Toledo, and the Teatro Principal in Zaragoza. A dedicated group of Musica Viva NY Patrons will accompany us, supporting this ambitious project. We look forward to sharing our music with Spanish audiences, collaborating with local musicians, and deepening our relationship with the Teatro Real, which is presenting the tour.

If tonight’s music inspires you, we warmly invite your support in helping Musica Viva NY continue to grow, flourish, and share joy this holiday season.

Warm regards,

MEET THE ARTISTS

Katie McCreary is a founding member/producer of the All’s Well Sisters and a musical omnivore. She sings a little of everything, from power belting to floating soprano. After this concert, you can catch her in the Chorus of Amahl and the Night Visitors with Joyce DiDonato over at Lincoln Center. Before now, you may have seen Katie at City Center’s Encores or puppeteering off Broadway. You may have heard her at All Souls, Music Viva NY or singing with Musica Sacra where she occasionally solos. Or you may have seen her touring around the country with the Phantom of The Opera occasionally playing the opera diva La Carlotta. Katie has two silly amazing kids and a funny looking dog. She’s also married to John and together, they all live in Harlem. She says “Thank you, especially to those who saw me when I could not.”

Tynan Davis is a dynamic and playful singer who hates labels and loves pushing boundaries. She sings what makes her happy, and hopes it makes you happy too.

In 2019 she won a GRAMMY® for Best Opera Recording with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. She toured North America for the better part of 3 years with The Phantom of the Opera where she met her nowhusband and danced 8 shows a week until she was 7.5 months pregnant.

When not playing with the All’s Well Sisters, you might find her hollering with 2-time GRAMMY® Award winning contemporary vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth or the 6-time GRAMMY® nominated Skylark Ensemble. Tynan is a teacher and clinician who specializes in reintroducing corporate executives to their voices and uses singing to remind them who they were before the world got in the way.

Caitlin Caruso Dobbs (she/her) is a multi-genre singer, actor, coach, and teaching artist. This summer she debuted at The Green Room 42 with her third NYC cabaret, Here We Go Again and is currently a soloist at All Souls NYC, Musica Viva NY, and a member of the NY Philharmonic Chorus. Stage: Bon Appétit (Hoiby), The Joe Hill Revival (Original Cast), Man of La Mancha, Carousel, Little Fish, Into the Woods, Les Miserables, Hairspray. Concert: Gloria Chorus (Sam Smith/Saturday Night Live), Hänsel und Gretel, Requiem for Gaia’s Children (World Premiere), Copland’s “In the Beginning” Soloist (New York Chamber Choir). When not performing she teaches music, theater, cabaret and choral skills privately and directs the annual P.S. 261 After School musical. Education: B.M. NYU Steinhardt. www.caitlincarusodobbs.net

MEET THE ARTISTS

John Evans is a New York-based multi-instrumentalist, arranger, and piano tuner. An “ex-pat” from Dallas, Texas, John learned classical repertoire and music theory on piano, rock and country music on guitar, and jazz improvisation on trumpet. He studied classical piano at the College of Wooster in Ohio and performed in a mélange of other musical groups from marching band to a capella choir. In NY and NJ, John has played in the pit on productions of Cabaret (first on trumpet, then banjo), Chicago, Songs for a New World, and at Casa Mañana in Fort Worth in Rent. In the city, John has performed at The Metropolitan Room, Swing 46, Cornelia Street Cafe, The Shrine, and myriad others, with jazz and rock outfits. His compositions have been used in the St. Paul Film Score Fest, the original short film “Dirt!”, and a staged version of Gertrude Stein’s esoteric Tender Buttons. John is most proud of his arrangements for the All’s Well Sisters! Since 2011, it was his dream to create a Boswell Sisters-inspired group. Here we are!

Jen Hodge is a GRAMMY®-nominated bass player, currently living in New York City and originally hailing from British Columbia, Canada. A versatile and passionate musician, Jen is in high demand for her rock-solid bass playing, her consummate professionalism, and for the warm, infectious spirit she brings to the bandstand. Jen is a fixture of NYC’s hot jazz community, frequently featuring in the house band for the long-running Mona’s Tuesday Night Hot Jazz jam session hosted by multi-instrumentalist Dennis Lichtman, and performing with such artists as Bria Skonberg, The Hot Sardines, Jon-Erik Kellso & The EarRegulars, Cynthia Sayer, and Danny Jonokuchi & The Revisionists.

Justin Hart Is a drummer/percussionist based in Cleveland, OH. Grateful to be a long-time friend of the group. “Thanks, all, for the beautiful music!” Hi, Katie here. Justin is too nice to tell you all how great he is. Here’s some of the things he’s done: he’s performed multiple times as a vacation sub for the touring production of Moulin Rouge, and he’s basically the “go to” drummer in Cleveland. When I asked him if he’s played more than 100 productions he said, “I don’t know! Maybe?” I have confirmed that he played 21 shows in 2016, so likely the answer is “yes.” When I asked what his favorites were, he said, “How could I know that?” However, he’s played five separate productions of Grease because “society is irreparable”. Justin has a biting wit and wicked sense of humor and we love him and would be lost without him.

MEET THE ARTISTS

Pianist, composer, and educator Willerm Delisfort is a messenger of life using music as his tool. From Jazz to Gospel to R&B, Willerm’s versatility has created a high demand for him with prominent artists, including Von and George Freeman, and Bobby Broom. Willerm was born in Little Haiti, Miami and attended Florida A&M University, where he founded his band, Willerm Delisfort Project. Later, he attended Northern Illinois University and studied with the great Willie Pickens and Ronald Carter. Willerm, as a leader, has released two albums: Freedom Riders (2009) and Black Element(s) (2023).

Shawn Bartels, tenor, has been a soloist with Musica Viva NY since 1996. Roles include Almaviva (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Nanki-Poo (Mikado), Vain Man/ Snake (Little Prince), Quint (Turn of the Screw), Ottavio (Don Giovanni) and Nicolas in Britten’s Saint Nicolas. Mr. Bartels sang Uriel (Creation) with Robert Shaw, in Jonathan Miller’s staging of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and as a soloist at Carnegie Hall. Shawn has appeared with the Victoria Bach Festival, the Society of Musical Arts and the New Orchestra of Washington. He received his BM in Vocal Performance from the University of Northern Colorado and his MM in Vocal Performance from FSU.

Nathan Siler is a New York–based multidisciplinary artist, singer, and music producer. He recently performed as “Der Narr” and in a vocal quartet at Carnegie Hall in Richard Strauss’s *Guntram* with the American Symphony Orchestra. He regularly sings with the New York Philharmonic, Virtuoso Singers, and Musica Viva NY. Beyond performing, he works as a producer, recording engineer, and composer, with recent commissions including orchestral arrangements for the GRAMMY® winning Sugar Free Allstars, as well as adaptations of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” and Led Zeppelin’s “Rain Song”. Follow him on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok @plafondaudiovisual.

Nicholas Hay, bass, has an active performance career as an ensemble singer with many choral organizations in the U.S. He started singing at a young age and joined the American Boychoir, previously one of the country’s premier music schools and a training ground for professional musicians. He has appeared with Opera Philadelphia, Baltimore Opera Company, Dell’Arte Opera Ensemble, Amore Opera, New York Lyric Opera Theatre, the Peabody Opera Theatre, Chelsea Opera, and the Opera Festival of New Jersey. An active choral singer and chamber musician, he sings regularly with the All Souls Choir in New York City, Musica Viva NY, New York Virtuoso Singers, The Crossing, Bard Festival Chorale, and other choral ensembles.

PROGRAM NOTES

Iwant to take you back to an uncomfortable, unsure time: the world was shutting down. We waited in line to get tested. We washed our groceries in a bleach solution. We were isolated and afraid. On April 5th, 2020, Queen Elizabeth II gave a four-minute address to the British people. She concluded her speech with words of hope: “we will meet again.” Suddenly, the old World War II ballad was everywhere. I asked John, a Boswell super fan, to arrange the Vera Lynn song “We Will Meet Again” in the 1930s style of the Boswell Sisters.

All’s Well Sisters began as a Covid pandemic project, rehearsing ten feet apart on blankets in Fort Tryon Park, recording vocal tracks separately, and inviting musicians from across the country to record and be creative with us during this fraught time. We even roped our dads into a tune! We would never have guessed that five years later, we’d be here tonight with all of you.

So why these songs? Originally, we wanted to honor the songs that were in the air at the time. We arranged and performed “Here Comes the Sun” because that was what hospitals played when a patient came off a ventilator and went home. “I Put a Spell on You” was a reaction to the Dobbs decision. “Coffee and a Crepe” was because we missed our friend Lily. Our song choices were reactions to real life things.

This project has always been based on friendship and connection. All’s Well Sisters was a project meant to bring people together, even when we were literally 10,000 miles apart—even when we were separated by a pandemic. We love the music we make, but it’s not as important as the people we make it with.

So here we are five years from “We’ll Meet Again.” And we’re so thrilled and thankful that you’ve decided to join us tonight. You’re here for the first full concert we’ve ever given, and how fortunate are we that you’re here!

That’s all!

MUSICA VIVA

Musica Viva NY is a non-profit arts organization that was established nearly fifty years ago. Its mission is to bring world-class music to a wide community through an annual concert series, an active community engagement program, and an ambitious artistic vision. Under the baton of Artistic Director Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez since 2015, Musica Viva NY strives to offer joy, solace and renewal in a complex world by presenting new compositions and classic masterworks in transformative interpretations that ennoble the human spirit.

Musica Viva NY’s superb chamber choir and world class collaborating instrumentalists make their concert home at Manhattan’s historic All Souls NYC. “Musica Viva NY is a treasured institution that makes living in New York a joy” ( Front Row Center).

Musica Viva NY regularly combines its presentation of the classical repertoire with less widely known works, as part of its commitment to perform the works of living American composers, women composers and composers of color, including works that address social, racial or environmental issues.

Dr. Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez is a celebrated conductor and pianist known for his expressive artistry and innovative programming. He serves as Artistic Director of Musica Viva NY, Director of Music at the Unitarian Church of All Souls in Manhattan, Artistic Director of the Victoria Bach Festival in Texas, and cofounder and Artistic Director of the New Orchestra of Washington (NOW).

Praised by The Washington Post for his “incisive clarity” and by The New York Times for delivering “a stirring performance,” Hernandez-Valdez is a passionate advocate for both traditional and contemporary music. He has commissioned and premiered works by a diverse roster of composers including Joan Tower, Arturo Márquez, Joseph Turrin, Gilda Lyons, Richard Einhorn, Seymour Bernstein, Viet Cuong, Juan Pablo Contreras, Trevor Weston, and Elena Ruehr, among others.

Under his leadership, Musica Viva NY has expanded its artistic reach, earning acclaim for compelling performances and, most recently, a landmark Naxos release featuring legendary mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade. With NOW, he has redefined the chamber orchestra experience, presenting bold programs in venues such as the Kennedy Center.

Upcoming engagements include performances of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Bach’s B Minor Mass, Brahms’s Symphony No.1, and the world premiere of Grammy-nominated composer Juan Pablo Contreras’s Symphony No.1. He will also lead Musica Viva NY on a tour of Spain in collaboration with Teatro Real.

Critical acclaim for our album CRIMSON ROSES

We are delighted to announce that our album, CRIMSON ROSES, released by Naxos in November 2024, has been receiving glowing reviews in the musical press, including the following:

BBC Music Magazine February 2025

“This moving album from Naxos celebrates the strength of contemporary American choral composition with three successful, and well-performed works.”

“This recording finds the Musica Viva NY Choir on especially thrilling form.”

Gramophone January 2025

“with warmth, vitality and cohesion under music director Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez . . . the Musica Viva NY Choir bask in the technical challenges, sustaining long lines with finesse and brimming with colour and crisp ensemble in the livelier material.”

Sequenza 21/ December 2024

“This is the tenth anniversary of Hernandez-Valdez’s tenure with Musica Viva NY, and the contemporary pieces that were selected for the recording demonstrate both his dedicated curation and the versatility and talent of the group.”

“The orchestra and choir acquit themselves well in Turrin’s neo-romantic score. Kudos to conductor Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez for leading the piece in a well-paced and thoughtful interpretation.”

Textura December 2024

“Led by its conductor and Artistic Director Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez since 2015, the chamber choir dazzles audiences with seasonal concerts at its historic All Souls NYC home base in Manhattan.”

“Crimson Roses: Contemporary American Choral Music is distinguished by the ensemble’s superb realizations of the three works but also for including a performance by the great mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade. Having someone of her stature—she’s issued over seventy recordings and received countless honours and awards for her life’s work—make a guest appearance on the album is a genuine feather in the cap for the choral ensemble.”

“Cumulatively, the works argue strongly on behalf of Musica Viva NY and Hernandez-Valdez’s assured guiding hand and suggest attendance at one of its All Souls NYC concerts should be part of any city visitor’s itinerary.”
