Mazzaferro: With Malice Toward None

Joe Mazzaferro is the associate director of jazz studies and associate professor of practice in jazz at University of the Pacific. As a trumpeter, educator, and composer, Mazzaferro is active in the Northern California jazz scene and in demand as a guest artist and clinician across the United States. Mazzaferro’s debut release In Terms of . . . (2017)— which features saxophonist Jeff Clayton along with special guests, drummer Carl Allen and pianist Donald Brown—received high praise from critics and was described as “vintage hard bop with maturity” (George Harris, Jazz Weekly).

He is a graduate of University of the Pacific (Bachelor of Music degree in music education) and the University of Tennessee (Master of Music degree in jazz and studio music).

Mazzaferro has gained critical acclaim as a composer and arranger and has arranged works for pianist Edward Simon, drummer Carl Allen, trumpeter Terell Stafford, and vocalist Jazzmeia Horn. In 2019 he contributed arrangements to Smoke Session Record’s release Bird at 100, commemorating the centennial of Charlie Parker’s birth, which featured alto saxophonists Vincent Herring, Bobby Watson, and Gary Bartz. Mazzaferro’s July 2020 big-band release Talk About It! Live @ The CLARA features exclusively his arrangements and compositions.

Note by the composer

Originally composed in August 2017, With Malice toward None serves as musical response to the events that took place in Charlottesville, VA on August 12 in the same year, where an assailant drove their car into a peaceful protest, killing 1 person and injuring over 30. The chaos and turmoil that ensued demonstrates the continuous racial divide in the United States of America. The title of this work is inspired by a quote from President Abraham Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address (March 4, 1865)

“With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation's wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan - to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and a lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.”

CONDUCTOR BIOGRAPHY

Nicolas Waldvogel has conducted University Symphony Orchestra and taught conducting and music history at University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music since 2001. He has guest conducted the Orchestra de la Suisse Romande, Switzerland, and the State Philharmonic “Dinu Lipatti," Romania. He was a conducting fellow at the Tanglewood Festival, where he studied with Gustav Meier, Seiji Ozawa, and John Nelson. He also assisted Horst Stein in a production of Wagner’s Der Ring der Nibelungen at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin.

Waldvogel has performed with Yo-Yo Ma, with Anonymous 4, and with Alan Gilbert. His credits include a performance of Ives’s immense Fourth Symphony, Verdi’s La traviata, Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Richard Einhorn’s Voices of Light, Bruckner's Ninth Symphony, and the complete symphonies by Jean Sibelius. He is the author of the “Symphony” article in Oxford Bibliographies Online.

Waldvogel holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and a Master of Arts degree in music from Harvard University, a Master of Music degree in conducting and a Graduate Performance Diploma in conducting from the Peabody Institute, and a PhD in music history from Yale University.

DIRECTOR BIOGRAPHY

Patrick Langham joined University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music in the fall of 2003 as associate professor and director of jazz studies. He holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees both with a concentration in jazz studies from the University of Tennessee–Knoxville. Langham has taught at the University of South Carolina–Spartanburg and Tusculum College in Knoxville.

As a saxophonist, Langham has performed with distinguished jazz artists and at numerous jazz festivals throughout the Southern United States. As a director, he has developed and taught courses in jazz history, theory, improvisation, and performance, and has created and operated a jazz camp at USC–Spartanburg. Langham directs the Pacific Jazz Ensemble and jazz combos; teaches courses in improvisation, jazz history, and theory; and teaches in the Pacific Jazz Ambassadors program, Summer Jazz Colony, and Pacific Music Camp.

UNIVERSITY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

University Symphony Orchestra (USO) performs an inclusive range of contemporary and historically significant symphonic works, performs annually with Pacific Opera Theatre in fully staged productions, and partners frequently with Pacific Singers in choral-orchestral works. Pacific faculty, students, and guest artists perform with the USO as concerto and aria soloists and as guest conductors. The Conservatory of Music faculty serve as coaches as the USO prepares each concert cycle. Participation is open to all Pacific students by audition.

Pacific Jazz Ensemble is an award-winning big band in the tradition of Duke Ellington and Count Basie. Their repertoire includes classic big band literature and embraces the music of contemporary composers and arrangers.
