PROGRAM NOTES
Program notes by Parker Deems
Stevens: Sonata for Trumpet and Piano
Halsey Stevens was a composer and music professor that spent most of his time teaching at the University of Southern California. He was a scholar and took inspiration from Béla Bartók. This work was composed in 1959 and is one of the most performed with notable recordings from Giuseppe Galante and Wynton Marsalis. The first movement features mixed meter passages and a western feel.
Arutiunian: Aria et Scherzo
Alexander Arutiunian was an Armenian composer who lived in Moscow for a majority of his life. There he composed many of his most popular works and was given many awards including the “People's Artist of the USSR” award. Composed in 1983, this work features a slow quarter note pulsing piano accompaniment that lays below a lyrical melancholy trumpet melody.
Delmas: Choral et Variations
Marc Delmas was a French composer who studied at the Paris Conservatory. He was a prolific composer that won many awards for his works throughout Europe. Choral et Variations is a work that opens with a lyrical and emotional chorale that is developed over four following variations. These variations go through varying style and texture displaying a variety of characters that the trumpet can express.
Purcell: Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D major, Z. 850
Henry Purcell was one the most well-known and celebrated English Baroque composers. Throughout his career he composed for a wide variety of instruments, ensembles, and voices developing the English Baroque style. This work, Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D major, features the regal yet expressive qualities of the trumpet. The first movement is energetic and stately with the third movement feeling like a dance. This edition is the one adapted for trumpet and piano by Austrian composer and musicologist Karl Heinz Fuessl.
Vinther: Rising Hope: A Prayer for Ellen
Megan Vinther is a Seattle-based composer and music educator that writes mainly for jazz band, concert band, and chamber ensembles. She focuses on creating an inclusive music community and increasing visibility for
underrepresented composers. Rising Hope features warm and contemplative melodies that pass from one instrument to another, creating an atmosphere of resilience and hope.
O’Donnell/Salvatori: Deference for Darkness
Martin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori are both American composers that mainly compose for film and video game music. This work, Deference for Darkness, was originally composed for the 2009 release of Halo 3: ODST and is known to be one of the most notable and fan-favorite compositions to come out of the entire game series. It is beloved for the haunting melodies above the sparse piano accompaniment that gives listeners a sense of loneliness, dread, and overcoming insurmountable odds.
