Long a vibrant locus for the arts in Baltimore, Emmanuel Church’s music programming takes another big step forward this year in scope and diversity of offerings and we invite you to join us regularly and often for these programs in the beauty and serenity of Emmanuel’s historic space at the corner of Cathedral and W Read Streets
Our 2024–2025 season comprises two main series: programming that features The Emmanuel Choir Maryland’s premier professional church choir and Tuesdays at Six, a happy-hour series of exceptional chamber music showcasing local musicians of the highest caliber Additionally, we are delighted to continue our relationship with Mount Vernon Virtuosi, one of the region’s most dynamic chamber orchestras, as Ensemble-in-Residence who open their season with Beethoven’s famous Fifth Symphony!
Whether basking in the sublime beauty of Rachmaninoff’s All Night Vigil by candlelight or reveling in the intricate choruses of Zelenka’s Missa Votiva, our Emmanuel Choir series this year has something for everyone In addition to these masterworks, the upcoming season features two not-to-be-missed holiday events in December including the North American premiere of Piers Connor Kennedy’s brand new work Nowel-el-el! for harp & choir; a program showcasing the timeless vocal polyphony of Palestrina 500 years after his birth; and an encore performance of an audience favorite for Baltimore PRIDE: Craig Hella Johnson’s poignant passion oratorio Considering Matthew Shepard Further, we are excited to collaborate with Peabody Children’s Chorus in a program we ’ ve called Prayers for Peace, and to mark the 90th birthday of Arvo Pärt, the world’s most-performed living composer in recent years
Our early-evening Tuesday series offers a rich array of chamber music performed by noteworthy local artists including Grammy winning artists and Pulitzer winning composers In addition to hearing beloved masterworks of Beethoven and Brahms, Mendelssohn and Fauré, our January program welcomes acclaimed folk artists Ken & Brad Kolodner and the December concert features superstar vocalists Colleen Daly & Tynan Davis singing Songs for the Holidays Groundbreaking soprano Ah Young Hong presents stunning works of Peabody faculty composer Michael Hersch in March, and Imani-Grace Cooper marks Valentine’s Day with an evening of sultry vocal jazz
This year, we dramatically expand our concert offerings that transcend usual categorization and start off by welcoming local hip-hop artist Wordsmith for A Concert for the Human Family, a program aligned with former Presiding Bishop Michael Curry’s vision for advancing racial reconciliation and Becoming Beloved Community In October, we host our first-ever choral festival, welcoming singers from across the city & state for a weekend of glorious song And, we are very excited to present two of the world’s leading vocal ensembles this year: VOCES8 sells out concerts around the globe and visits Emmanuel in October; LORELEI is America’s preeminent ensemble for women ’ s voices, and we are honored to have them with us in March And, back by popular demand, we feature Hot Club of Baltimore for Mardi Gras!
Of course, none of these offerings is possible without your attendance, enthusiasm, and support We invite you to mark these dates on your calendar and plan to attend and, this year, we ’ ve made that easier by offering subscriptions, enabling you to save on ticket costs with the added flexibility of ticket exchanges should your plans change. So, please do subscribe. Please also share these events with friends, neighbors, and colleagues and invite them to join you! And, finally, we hope you will consider becoming or renewing your support as a “Friend of Music” by making a tax-deductible financial contribution to strengthen and sustain this important series in the heart of Mt Vernon
Again, welcome to this new year of Music at Emmanuel We look forward to seeing you often this season!

Sixty miles from Johann Sebastian Bach’s home in Leipzig sits the great city of Dresden and it is here, in the splendid Catholic Court, that Czech composer Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679–1745) spent his career. Largely unnoticed during life and mostly forgotten after death, Zelenka’s genius as a composer was nonetheless recognized and celebrated by the likes of Bach and Telemann and his innovative, quirky compositions are notable for their unusual harmonic spice, asymmetrical phrasing, and rhythmic syncopation Indeed, while Bach’s music might generally follow an orderly path, Zelenka’s works are exhilarating in their relative unpredictability In this program, hear Zelenka’s glorious Missa Votiva, Op 18 alongside Bach’s great Easter cantata Christ lag in Todes Banden, BWV 4, performed by The Emmanuel Choir, soloists from within its ranks, and period-instrument chamber orchestra Come discover and fall in love with the work of this “Bohemian Bach”!
At Emmanuel, Christian Lane is marking off a sacred precinct for the most interesting and beautiful music of past, present, and future to be lovingly performed and enthusiastically heard. Attending Music at Emmanuel's 2023 performance of Considering Matthew Shepard transformed what had been a rather narrow view of sacred music into a richer appreciation of the everexpanding power of music to speak to our times with new sounds and innovative ways of storytelling It was one of the most moving performances we have ever experienced We plan to go again this year with many friends!

ABOUTTHEVENUE
Emmanuel Episcopal Church is located in the heart of Baltimore's historic Mt Vernon neighborhood Its tremendous stone tower at the corner of Cathedral and W Read Streets serves as a beacon in this community, and the nave's warm acoustic and gentle ambiance contribute to creating an ideal environment in which to hear choral and chamber music.
In 2022, the church building underwent a $3.2M transformation to make each space in its physical plant fully accessible to all; included in this project was an elevator, increased ramp access, and new restroom facilities
