All cattle have been vaccinated and boosted with modified live IBR, BVDPI, BRSV, Lepto 5, Vibrio, and 7 way. They have also been treated with Ivormectin. All cattle have tested negative for BVD-PI. All bulls passed a BSE and semen evaluation. Trucking: Bring your trailer to the sale and you will receive a $75 rebate per bull. We will continue to offer free delivery on total bull purchases over $3000 for the first 700 miles. Deliveries over 700 miles will be at cost for only those miles over 700, prorated among bulls still on the load. We can arrange delivery for heifers at a reasonable cost. Everyone, please provide a facility where we may unload and reload several bulls. You may also need to accommodate a semi-truck. If unable to do so at your place, please make arrangements with a neighbor, sale barn, etc. where this may be done. For the first time we summered our 18 month old bulls on native pasture. We saw a marked improvement in herd health despite the hot dry weather. Coverage is good for a period of 5 months following purchase. Cost is 5% of the purchase price paid at settlement. In the event your bull is permanently injured or dies, you receive credit towards purchase of another bull in the amount of the original purchase price minus any salvage. Ex. You purchase a bull for $3000 at the March 28th sale and buy the warranty for $150. He gets injured on May 31st. You sell him and get a credit for $3000 minus what he brought when you sold him. If he died it would have been $3000 credit towards your replacement bull purchase. 3

Red Angus EPD Base Change! In late 2012, in order to take advantage of an unprecedented 11 million animal data base, Red Angus and the American Simmental Association released growth and carcass EPDs on a common base. This partnership gave the beef industry the first EPDs that can be compared across two breeds. Why does this matter? Selection for Growth (BW, WW, YW, Milk) and Carcass (MARB, YG, CW, REA, FAT) EPDs will be greatly simplified for commercial customers who need to compare EPDs between the Red Angus and Simmental breeds. In addition, EPDs of hybrids and composites now have an EPD that can be compared across Red Angus and Simmental for those traits on the common base. What changes will I see? The Red Angus EPDs for growth and carcass look different. That is because a new base was established for both Red Angus and Simmental breeds to use. Although the base is changed and the EPD looks different, the cattle are the same. Percentile rankings can be used while learning to understand the EPDs with the common base. The graph illustrates that even though the average animal is exactly the same, he is now described with a different set of numbers. For example, let’s say you had a dog named One. You gave it to your neighbor. He named it Ten. It is still the same dog, acts the same, probably chases the wrong things the same. Nevertheless, your neighbor is using a different word to describe it. Use Percentile Ranking. It is very important that you take the time to understand each EPD and where it fits within the percentile ranking. That way you can put selection pressure where you need to so that you move your program forward. For that reason, Mushrush Red Angus is once again publishing the percentiles in the catalog. Please note that all the other EPDs published in our catalog are still on the current Red Angus base. This leaves their base unchanged and therefore not comparable to Simmental at this time. Those EPDs include CED, CEM, Stay, HPG, ME. Although the Multi-Breed base allows for a direct comparison of Red Angus and Simmental in the Growth and Carcass traits, the percentile ranks for Red Angus animals will continue to simply compare the genetics of Red Angus animals against other Red Angus. Thus, an animal in the top 10% of the Red Angus breed under the old base will still be in the top 10% of the breed using the multi breed base. 4

Selecting your Genetics After making a visual appraisal to select those bulls that best fit your unique phenotypic requirements we highly recommend you use EPDs to determine which bulls best fit your production goals. It must be remembered that actual weights and measurements cannot be used to compare individuals across contemporary groups, let alone across herds. A contemporary group is simply a group of calves of same sex and age that have been handled identically. All actual weights, including birth weight, can be affected or even manipulated by environment, feed, age of dam, and even at what point they are taken. For example: We could scan our bulls at 18 months and give you actual REA of impressive size.  Does this make these bulls genetically superior? NO. It is generally accepted that cold weather prior to calving will increase birth weights.  Are these cattle genetically predisposed to higher birth weight? NO. In the Flint Hills of Kansas, fall calves winter extremely hard. The grass is at its lowest protein (4%) and the weather can be very harsh. On the other hand, spring born calves hit their stride about the time green grass starts growing. They traditionally will have higher weaning weights when compared to the fall born calves using identical genetics. It is common for our Spring born calves to wean 100 lbs heavier than our fall born calves due to environment.  Does this mean our spring born bulls will sire calves with higher weaning weights than our Fall born bulls? NO. It would be misleading for us, or any seedstock provider to promote individuals using actual data.

Comparing across contemporary groups with actual or adjusted data can be inaccurate and could lead to selection or culling errors. To accurately compare across contemporary groups and across herds, EPDs are your best tools!!!! Using EPDs -A common misconception is that EPDs will tell us which animal of several being compared is ‘best’. EPDs are merely a description of each animal’s genetic makeup. It is up to us to determine which animal is best for us. What is best for my herd and management situation is not necessarily what is best for your environment, herd composition and management style.

By correctly using EPDs we can each determine which animal best fits our programs, or moves them in a direction we want to go. For instance, if your herd is of a heavily muscled continental influence, it may not make sense to put emphasis on the REA EPD when selecting your Red Angus bull. Your calves may be inheriting all the Rib Eye size and cutability they need from the dams. On the other hand, if your cows are lighter muscled, British type cows, you may want to breed towards more cutability and Rib eye size by selecting a Red Angus bull that has a higher REA EPD. In this scenario, however, it may not make economic sense to pay extra for above average marbling ability if the cow herd itself is adequate in this trait. The key to using EPDs is knowing what you have, what you need, and making selections accordingly. A common misconception is that EPDs are absolute. Calves from a high accuracy +80 Yearling Weight bull have the genetic potential to weigh 20 pounds more than calves from a high accuracy +60 pound Yearling weight bull at harvest. Whether they express this added weight depends on if the environment or management, including feed availability, allows them to. In many cases it may not be worth the extra costs to express the extra genetic potential.

Economically Relevant Trait’s for Profitability Did you know that Calving Ease and Fertility are at least three times more important than any other trait? Open cows and dead calves pay no bills. If you have a 20 head cow herd, just one more cow conceiving and one less calf lost at birth is worth $100/head in increased revenue to you at the current market. The average of the bulls in this sale will rank in the top 20% of the breed or above for Calving Ease and Stayability. Calving Ease is measured by Birth Wt. EPD and Calving Ease Direct EPD (CED). A lower BW EPD indicates lower birth weights and a higher CED indicates better calving ease. (CED combines birth weight with a direct observation of calving difficulties). While the benefit of increased calving ease is obvious in reducing calving difficulties, there are other advantages that dictate that calving ease bulls should be used on cows as well as heifers. Birth weight is highly correlated to mature cow size. Use of lower birth weight bulls on cows is the surest way to keep cow size in check and insure moderate sized efficient cows for the future. Stayability – The surest measurement of fertility. In simple terms it is a measure of a bulls daughters’ ability to conceive every year until the age of six. Miss and she will receive a negative observation which affects Stayabiltiy EPD. A higher number is better. Red Angus is the only major breed able to measure fertility in this manner due to the use of THR (Total Herd Reporting).

Explanation of EPDs and data used in catalog

1A - Purebred 100% Red Angus with no disqualifying characteristics. 1B - 87% to and including less than 100% Red Angus with no qualifying characteristics. Category II - Animals with equal to or greater than 87% up to including 100% Red Angus blood content having one or more disqualifying features. In this offering it is white in front of the navel or scurs. Cat. III - 50 - 87% Red Angus. BW - actual birth weight of a calf. Compare only within contemporary groups. Dam MPPA- Most Probable Producing Ability. An estimate of a cow’s future productivity based on her past productivity. AWW - Adjusted Weaning Weight. Weaning Weight is highly affected by management and environment. As we have more than one management group from two environments in this sale, the AWW’s are not comparable. A better comparison is the WW EPD. Wean Ratios have been added so you can compare within contemporary groups. AYW - Adjusted yearling weight is the animals’ yearling weight adjusted to 365 days and age of dam. Yearling ratios have been added too so that you can compare within each contemporary group. E.P.D.’s - Expected Progeny Difference is the expected difference in pounds, in performance of an animals progeny when those progeny are compared to progeny of an animal with an EPD of zero for the trait in question. EPD values are relative. They do not indicate absolute levels of performance. Rather, they can be used to compare expected progeny performance of different animals. They CANNOT be compared across breeds without a special conversion formula. (i.e., black and red Angus) CED - Calving ease direct is the expected differences of calving ease measured as the probability difference (between sires) of daughter that calve unassisted. A higher number indicates more calving ease. B.W. EPD - The number of pounds heavier or lighter at birth that this bull/female can be expected to produce compared to the average BW of progeny from all bulls/females in the breed. WW EPD - The number of pounds heavier or lighter at 205 days of age that this bull/female can produce compared to the average 205 AWW of progeny from all bulls/females in the breed. YW EPD - The number of pounds heavier or lighter at 365 days of age that this bull/female can produce compared to the average AYW of progeny from all bulls/females in the breed. Milk EPD - The number of pounds heavier or lighter at 205 days expected from the bull’s daughters’ calves that cannot be attributed to WW EPD alone. ME - Maintenance Energy predicts the differences in energy requirements of mature daughters of an individual and is expressed in Mega-calories per month. Differences in Maintenance Energy requirements can easily translate into differences in feed required to maintain body weight. For example daughters of a bull with an ME EPD of 8 are expected to need 3 more mega calories per month to maintain condition when compared to daughters of a bull with an ME of 5. The lower the number the more efficient you would expect progeny to be. HPG - Heifer Pregnancy EPD is the expected difference in probability of a sire’s daughter conceiving to calve as a two year old. A higher number is always desirable. CEM –Calving Ease Total Maternal EPD measures the probability of a given animals daughters calving unassisted at two years of age. Stayability - The expected difference in probability of daughters staying in the herd to at least the age of six years. Marbling - A subjective numeric value assigned to varying levels of intramuscular fat. Breed average or higher EPD is desirable. YG – Predicts differences of carcass yield grade score and is expressed in USDA Yield Grad score (1-5). RibEye Area - Area of the longissimus muscle measured in square inches at the 12/13th rib interface on the beef forequarter. Larger REA is obtained by selecting positive REA EPDs. CW – Predicts differences in hot carcass weight and is expressed in pounds. Scrotal - The actual scrotal circumference in centimeters taken during the breeding soundness examination prior to the sale. Frame Score - height adjusted to Moderate (Mod) Moderate + (Mod.+), or Moderate - (Mod.-) see p. 8 for explanation. Dam’s YOB – is simply the year the dam was born % Rank in breed – denoted by a percentage beneath the EPD of each trait. 7

Additional Catalog Information Frame Score: Beginning with our sale in 2011, we no longer assign a numerical number to frame score. Frame score is the least consistent of any objectively measured trait. It is highly variable due to facilities, equipment used, and the way the animal is standing at the time. We have circled animals around to be re-measured and can seldom duplicate a measurement. In addition, measurements can vary widely due to environmental differences. Our fall bulls will post an adjusted yearling frame score average almost a whole frame score less than our Spring bulls, and yet mature to the same size. This is due to the slower rate of growth of the fall bulls while on the cow. We now report frame score as Moderate (Mod.) Moderate minus (Mod.-), or Moderate plus (Mod. +). Moderate is our most frequent observation and will correspond to around a frame score 5 mature size. Bulls marked with this Logo qualify as sires for the Missouri Show Me Select Heifer program. Just because a bull is labeled good for heifers doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean he would not be an excellent choice for cows too. Many of the bulls are above average for growth and muscle with the added benefit of no grief calving, while keeping mature cow size in check.

18 Month Fall Born Bulls This is an outstanding set of age advantage bulls that we will put up against others anywhere. Each bull has undergone a complete breeding soundness exam, including semen evaluation, prior to the sale. They have had a complete vaccination program including a booster in February with Pfizer™ Bovi-shield Gold + VL5 and are ready to turn out without further vaccinations this season. In addition, every sale animal has tested negative for BVD-PI. The carcass EPDs listed in the catalog are the P+ and include data from each bulls’ own ultrasound which was done November 8, 2012. Scrotal measurements are actual measurements taken at semen evaluation on January 25 and 28, 2013. Frame score is the most variable of all objectively measured traits, and the one that has given us the most grief over the years. Because of the lack of consistency when measuring animals several times, we no longer assign a numerical value to frame score. See page 8 for a description of our frame size postings. This set of bulls was developed on 260 acres of native range this summer while being supplemented with Purina Accu Ration just enough to express differences in growth rate. This winter we moved them to one of our large rock traps at the sale facility. Their limited energy diet and lots of exercise make for hard, fit, athletic bulls ready for heavy service. This set of bulls is a prime example of why when comparing across contemporary groups it is important to use only EPDs. Our fall born bulls routinely wean over 100# lighter than their Spring born counterparts due to environmental differences.

2012 Spring Born Bulls Every bull has had a complete breeding soundness exam and vaccination history and tested negative for BVD PI. The carcass EPD’s in the catalog are parental, calculated before ultrasound data was taken. A supplement sheet will be available at the sale (and before online) that illustrates recalculated Carcass EPD’s and ultrasound ratios along with scrotal measurements which are being taken after the catalog goes to print. The bulls were developed and tested this winter running out in one of our rocky hilly traps at our sale facility. We feed these bulls only enough to make sure they are big and stout enough to breed your mature cows and adequately express any genetic differences that might exist for growth and carcass. Commercial First Calf Heifer pairs – We retained a sample right out of our commercial bred heifer program to showcase the quality of the heifers we handle. The heifers are calving at catalog printing (in a major snowstorm) so the exact number of pairs will be determined at a later date. We expect 20 pairs offered in small groups sorted by sire and sex. Sale Terms and Conditions

Bidding: Each animal on which there are two or more bids will be sold to the highest bidder. Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalog. Terms: Terms of the sale are cash unless prior credit arrangements have been made with the sellers. Purchasers Risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Care will be provided by the seller free for 48 hours for those hauling their own. Trucking: Trucking will be provided at purchasers risk for free on bull purchases over $3000 for the first 700 miles, or free care until May 1. Heifers by arrangement. See front inside cover for details. Certificate of Registry: A certificate of registry and transfer will be furnished for each animal sold as a registered animal, after settlement has been made. Health: All cattle will have official health certificates to allow shipment anywhere in the U.S. Breeders guarantee: All bulls sold are guaranteed for fertility, structural soundness and disposition for a period of six months following the sale. Each bull has passed a breeding soundness exam including semen test. Any bull showing difficulties in one of these areas may, if in healthy condition, be returned to the site of the sale at buyers expense. The seller, at his option, may either refund the purchase price to the buyer or provide credit towards purchase of a replacement animal. All claims regarding breeding difficulties must be accompanied by a letter from a licensed veterinarian to that effect, such statement also indicating that the difficulty is not the result of injury or illness following the delivery. Buyers wishing for protection against injury or death of their bull/s may purchase the optional Bull Warranty. (see page 3) Liability: Every precaution will be taken for the safety and comfort of those who attend the auction. All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk, and the owner, auctioneer, clerks, and other employees assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents which may occur. Genetic Defects: We have examined all pedigrees and performed DNA testing on individuals or pedigrees deemed susceptible to possessing a known genetic defect. We fully guarantee all animals in this sale to be free of any genetic defect monitored by the Red Angus Association of American on the date of the sale. If the buyer can prove otherwise with a parent verified DNA test, we will replace the animal in question in accordance with our Breeders guarantee. Contract: The above terms and conditions shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal sold. Implied warranty: The warranties and guarantees on this page of Sale Terms and Conditions are in lieu of all other warranties, and the remedies given are the sole remedies of the buyer. Except for the provisions stated on this page, there are no warranties of any kind on the animals in this sale as to the merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.
