• Genealogy Center providing professional research.

• Museum Design Store providing this catalog filled with items of tasteful Danish and panScandinavian design.

AbouT THE DESIgNEr: Kay Bojesen's world-famous wooden figures are classic gifts for children and adults alike. Each character is hand-crafted in Denmark by expert craftsmen and furniture makers, and have movable parts. When you give or receive a Kay Bojesen you can take pride in its Scandinavian authenticity. Kay Bojesen's premise in his work was a conviction that his objects should have life, blood and a heart. People should want to pick them up, and they should radiate humanity, warmth and vibrancy. The monkey was produced in accordance with Bojesen's motto that lines should smile. In the early 1950s, it was so popular that it was exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Creating animals that matched his beliefs, he felt his animals should never be an exact replica of nature. Kay Bojesen has created treasured and beloved characters that appeal to the child within us all. Their easy expressions have brought joy to many the world over. Explore and experience the warmth of Kay Bojesen!

oN THE CovEr: Give a gift that will last a lifetime. Kay Bojesen's iconic Monkey was born in 1951. A little Monkey with the great personality which has come to signify a gift from a very special person. For christenings, birthdays, school graduations and weddings. A classic and a dear friend for life – from being a popular toy in the playroom to a much-loved design icon in a future home. The monkey comes in sizes: Mini or Small, found on page 5.

Danish-American artist Cynthia McKeen has been working in acrylics, watercolor, ink, paper and photography for over 40 years. Under the name of proongily, she spent a number of years in store, graphic, interior and exhibit design before changing to the die cut and custom paper cutting business in the late 80's. McKeen's influence comes from her dear Danish grandmother who taught her the intricate art of paper cutting or papirklip. Her paper work has sold in museum stores across the country, and her work in a variety of mediums has been shown in the United States and Japan.

the dagmar cross necklace

For those of Danish heritage, the Dagmar cross is a popular gift for christenings (baptisms), confirmations, and weddings. Several hundred years before Denmark officially became a Christian country in 900 AD, missionaries came to preach about Christianity. They often brought crosses which they wore to show their new faith. The crosses were made of gold, silver or bronze. Many were placed in churches or buried with their owners. Of the few that survive today, one of the most elaborate and beautiful is known as the Dagmar Cross.

The ancient origin makes this cross truly a treasure for all Christians. 2

decor, games, books by charley harper

Charley Harper (1922-2007), with his masterly use of simple geometric shapes, patterns, and vivid colors, distilled the essence of each bird, bug, otter, raccoon, or elephant he painted to its most important details. He called his style of painting "minimal realism". Harper's approach to depicting the natural world is both sophisticated and fun. His works - especially those of cardinals and ladybugshave become icons of wildlife art.

1. Wild Plum Thicket Runner, 3-D die cut with intricate detail, #1177 • $50.00

"If I were taken to the state of Iowa blindfolded and there my blinds removed, I could tell where I was by the numerous native plums in hedge rows and in other places. I have never seen the plum more numerous anywhere. Its sweet-scented blossoms, changing from pure white to different shades of cream or pink, or even rose, are charming indeed. The native plum loves the company and speaks most eloquently when in a group. In river bottoms its blossoms appear like clouds of snow drifting through the shady bottomlands. In the woodlands its blossoms appear like fleeting notes in a mighty symphony." Siftings, by Jens Jensen

Between 1850 and 1920, approximately 300,000 Danes immigrated to America to start new lives. Some of them dreamt of a new beginning with freedom, wealth, and happiness. Others fled from unhappy events or a past with crime. This three part documentary tells some of those stories.

About the life of an early 20th century Danish immigrant named Hans Hansen (1876-1953), as told by his son, 96-year-old Walter Hansen. Hans emigrated from Denmark to the United States in 1899 and built a farm out of the native timber he found alongside a marginal piece of land on the Cedar River near West Branch, Iowa. Within Walter’s soft-spoken account emerges the dynamic of a father-son relationship forged under the harsh conditions of the early Midwestern settlement. The film’s powerful soundtrack includes works performed by Victor Borge and the Danish String Quartet. This film, by John Richard and produced by the Museum of Danish America, is the featured work played in the Museum's Multimedia Room. The film received seven film festival awards.
