Many of the artists that started to strongly contribute to contemporary art in the decade of the 1960s appear today as paradigmatic representatives of a series of highly resilient attitudes. Instead of falling into the arms of the spectacle and the culture industry — both seductive and stifling —, they exemplified an insistent and necessary resistance to a world that was accelerating and on fire through producing countless artefacts in the culture and industry fields. Accelerated consumption led, among other things, to alienation and a series of assaults against humanity and nature that stirred the consciences of a group of creators, among which was herman de vries. Since the mid of the last century, de vries has produced a series of works where denial of ego or the role of chance and randomness coexist with issues related to the ecosystem and with all the lessons that can be drawn from nature.

Actually, an important part of his production is related to nature in many ways: materials, colours, forms, processes, times, rhythms, etc., to the extent that it is nature that leaves its mark on the Dutch artist's work.

Because of his respect for nature his work and his attitude communicate an idea of a pristine regression to origin or a kind of systemic symbiosis, and above all, an interest in investigating the laws ordering existence, nature and the universe. This is how the artist has pledged himself in his life and in his work to an investigation of the ties between nature and humanity, the perfection of the former and the lust for perfection and elevation of the latter.

Far from indulging in aestheticism and mannerism, his career is marked by actions and proposals that, rather than an orphic or religious positioning — also present in his work —, show a "scientific" approach.

We see methods, designs, executions, investigations or data collections that bring him closer to science and philosophy through the questioning and inquisitive character of his work, which wards off any kind of empty mysticism. His work is not based on any nostalgia for a lost purity, but on focusing on reality, on our first and most immediate reality: the nature of which we are part.

The artist spends many hours walking across the forest that surrounds his home or the places he visits in his travels. Through the collection and classification of plants, soils and stones, the exhibition of those "findings" or his text editing show the uniqueness and diversity of life and the relationships it has with death. He works with meaning-laden materials that directly express the laws that organize them, the properties that they possess and the experiences that we associate with them. This direct impression, however, does not hide the religious, anthropological, natural, artistic and scientific reflections underlying his work. Rather, they intertwine and reinforce each other so that poetic evocation merges with scientific experience.

In this time where neo-liberalism exploits the Earth through its impatient looting, it is more than relevant to pay attention to seminal artists who, through their work and attitude, have managed to remind us that we are part of the same nature that we selfishly ravage. It is also very relevant to get to know and to review sound and consistent trajectories — such as de vries’s — that have remained independent from fashion trends and markets and that, to a large extent because of their marginal position, have given rise to a body of work that expands our perception of the world ●

Muchos de los artistas que iniciaron con fuerza sus aportaciones al arte contemporáneo en la década de los años 60 se revelan hoy paradigmáticos de una serie de actitudes que, en vez de caer en los brazos tan seductores como asfixiantes del espectáculo y la industria de la cultura, ejemplifican una insistente y necesaria resistencia ante un mundo que se aceleraba y se enardecía produciendo innumerables artefactos en el ámbito de la cultura y de la industria. El consumo acelerado conllevó, entre otras cosas, una serie de alienaciones y agresiones a la humanidad y a la naturaleza que hizo reaccionar a un conjunto de creadores como herman de vries quien, desde mediados del siglo pasado, ha generado un conjunto de obras en el que la negación del ego o el papel del azar y la casualidad conviven con cuestiones relacionadas con el ecosistema y con todas las lecciones que podemos extraer de la naturaleza.

Una parte importante de su producción, de hecho, está relacionada con la naturaleza de muchas maneras: los materiales, los colores, las formas, los procesos, los tiempos, los ritmos, etcétera, hasta el punto de que es ella la que imprime su huella en el trabajo del artista holandés.

El respeto hacia la naturaleza hace que en su obra y en su actitud se encuentre una cierta idea de regresión prístina al origen o una especie de simbiosis sistémica y, también y sobre todo, un interés por investigar las leyes que ordenan la existencia, la naturaleza y el universo. Es así como el artista se ha comprometido en su vida y en su obra con una investigación de los lazos entre la naturaleza y la humanidad, entre la perfección de la primera y el ansia de perfección y elevación de la segunda.

Lejos de esteticismos y poses, su trayectoria está jalonada de acciones y propuestas en las que, más que un posicionamiento órfico o religioso — que también está en su obra —, hay un acercamiento “científico” por cuanto que intuimos métodos, diseños, ejecuciones, investigaciones o recopilaciones de datos que le acercan a la ciencia y la filosofía en lo que sus trabajos tienen de interrogación y ansia de saber que le alejan de misticismos hueros. Su obra no se basa en la nostalgia de una pureza perdida, sino en una focalización de la realidad, de nuestra primera y más inmediata realidad: la naturaleza de la que somos parte.

El artista dedica tiempo a caminar por el bosque que circunda su casa o por los lugares a los que viaja. A través de la recogida y clasificación de plantas, tierras y piedras, la exposición de esos “hallazgos” o la edición de textos muestra la unicidad y la diversidad de la vida y las relaciones que ésta tiene con la muerte. Se trata de materiales cargados de su propia significación que manifiestan directamente las leyes que los organizan , las propiedades que poseen y las experiencias que asociamos a ellos. Esta impresión directa, sin embargo, no oculta las reflexiones religiosas, antropológicas, naturales, artísticas y científicas que alientan su trabajo. Antes bien, se anudan y refuerzan entre sí hasta lograr que la evocación poética se funda con la experiencia científica.

En este tiempo de rapiñas impacientes con las que el neoliberalismo explota la tierra, es más que pertinente atender a artistas seminales que con su trabajo y su actitud han conseguido recordarnos que somos parte de esa misma naturaleza que egoístamente agostamos. También, es muy pertinente conocer y revisar trayectorias sólidas y coherentes que se han mantenido al margen de modas y mercados y que, en gran parte por ello, han conseguido, como también lo ha logrado de vries, levantar un corpus de obra que expande nuestra percepción del mundo ●

prologue In a quiet German town surrounded by farmland and a thick forest stands a peaceful rustic home with a beautiful front garden. Its wooden mailbox by the main door simply reads “de vries,” in reference to the home of herman and susanne de vries.

The generous foyer of this country home opens up to a stairwell lined with a variety of exotic musical instruments. On the first floor, a half-open door allows one to steal a peek at a well-lit bedroom with white walls and white sheets. A study with its adjacent library is filled with carefully catalogued books in floor-toceiling shelves, offering a good portrait of the inhabitants of the house. There are books on botany, natural medicine, ethnobiology, landscaping, Eastern philosophies and religions, poetry; boxes and boxes filled with soil samples, stones or leaves; framed artworks, exhibition posters, files with hand-written poetry . . . On the ground floor is the kitchen where a map tracing hundreds of trails pursued over the years hangs.

The bathroom, with a cabinet filled with small bottles of natural medicine, opens up to a garden where seemingly unlandscaped plants and flowers grow. There, in an independent space, is a studio riddled with more natural elements, wonders for the curious eye . . .

An artist’s studio tells much about a person, and herman de vries’s studio is a very particular space where nature, science, philosophy, and poetry coexist and become art. In his world shaped by scientific procedures as well as Buddhist or Taoist writings, there are many recurring concepts that traverse his practice in the most logical and natural way. Among these concepts is the idea of chance & change. zero chance & change has accompanied herman de vries for decades, in the beginning perhaps unconsciously, since the time when he was a member of the Zero movement and its Netherlandish iteration, the Nul group. Change was what these movements advocated: “A zone of silence and of pure possibilities for a new beginning.”1 Chance was what brought them together—the New Realism from France, the Azimuth from Italy, the Gutai from Japan, or the Nul from The Netherlands (all of whose members would later form the international ZERO2 network)—artists seeking the same ideals for a pragmatic and sober approach toward making art and being an artist.

El amplio vestíbulo de esta casa de campo se abre a una escalera cuyas paredes están atestadas de diversos instrumentos musicales exóticos. En la primera planta, una puerta entreabierta deja ver una habitación luminosa de paredes y sábanas blancas. Una sala, con su biblioteca contigua, llena de libros cuidadosamente catalogados y colocados en estanterías que van desde el suelo hasta el techo, ofrece un fiel retrato de los habitantes de la casa. Hay libros sobre botánica, medicina natural, etnobiología, paisajismo, filosofía y religiones orientales, poesía; cajas y cajas llenas de muestras de tierra, piedras u hojas; obras enmarcadas, carteles de exposiciones, carpetas con poesía escrita a mano. . . En la planta baja, ocupada por la cocina, un mapa muestra los cientos de recorridos realizados a lo largo de los años. El baño, con un armario lleno de frasquitos de medicinas naturales, da a un jardín donde crecen libremente las plantas y las flores. Allí, en un espacio independiente, se encuentra el estudio de herman de vries: está repleto de más elementos naturales, maravillas para el ojo curioso. . .

El estudio de un artista dice mucho sobre quien trabaja en él, y el de herman de vries es un mundo muy particular donde la naturaleza, la ciencia, la filosofía y la poesía coexisten y se convierten en arte. En su mundo, moldeado tanto por procedimientos científicos como por escritos budistas o taoístas, hay muchos conceptos recurrentes que discurren transversalmente por su práctica de la manera más lógica y natural.

Entre ellos está la idea de chance & change* (casualidad/oportunidad y cambio). zero chance & change ha acompañado a herman de vries durante décadas, al principio quizás de manera inconsciente, desde la época en que era miembro del movimiento Zero y de su homólogo holandés Nul. El cambio era lo que propugnaban estos movimientos: “una zona de silencio y de posibilidades puras para un nuevo comienzo”1. La casualidad fue la que unió a los miembros de estos grupos —los nuevos

herman de vries’s life as an artist could be traced back to 1953, at the time still working as a research biologist. The two occupations complemented each other and would evolve into a coherent artistic practice that stemmed from principles based on informal or concrete works. "the change which began in the informal works has had its outcome in a new concept. objective, namely, personal feelings are eliminated [from the work] as far as possible. the normative is no part of the outcome. stupidity: art no longer requires expression through the operation of skilled technique or the working of the intellect because now it can be made by anyone. it can be said that at this point art ceases to be. expression is no longer what is visible. it is internalized and hermetically sealed. zero: everything is unity, everything happens at once. there are no contraries. zero is not a starting point, it is a plane of e x i s t e n c e ." 3 This declaration, published in the review nul=0, reflected the general spirit of the Nul group, which searched for new relations between art and reality, fleeing from colorful expressionism to adopt the absence of a personal signature. They found neutrality through the monochrome (by reducing everything to white, the surface of the painting is left frozen and anonymous), repetition and seriality (the multiplication of identical elements is provoked by the acceptance of an isolated reality, without emphasizing anything), and the direct use of everyday materials and objects (even manufactured objects and materials have to be devoid of personality; the material is “itself” and already possesses its own beauty). Even in its conceptual aspect, Nul advocated that “the creation process is . . . completely unimportant and uninteresting; a machine can do it.

The personal element lies in the idea and no longer in the manufacture.”4

Los inicios de herman de vries como artista se remontan a 1953, cuando ejercía como biólogo investigador. Las dos ocupaciones se complementaban y acabaron materializándose en una práctica artística basada en obras informalistas o concretas. “e l c a m b i o q u e e m p e z ó e n l a s obras informalistas tuvo como resultado un nuevo concepto. lo o b j e t i v o , e s d e c i r, l o s s e n t i m i e n tos personales han sido eliminados [de la obra] en la medida de lo posible. la normativo ya no es par te del resultado. estupidez: el arte ya no necesita expresarse mediante la técnica especializada o el trabajo intelectual porque en la actualidad cualquiera puede llevarlo a cabo. se puede decir que en este punto el arte deja de e x i s t i r. la expresión ya no es lo que es visible. se interioriza y se sella herméticamente. cero: todo está unido, todo sucede a la vez. no hay contrarios. cero no es un punto de partida, e s u n p l a n o d e e x i s t e n c i a ” 3.

Esta declaración, publicada en la revista nul=0, reflejaba el espíritu general del grupo Nul, que buscaba entablar nuevas relaciones entre el arte y la realidad, huyendo del colorido del expresionismo para adoptar la ausencia de un estilo personal. Encontraron esa neutralidad a través del monocromo (al reducir todo el color al blanco, la superficie del cuadro queda congelada y anónima), la repetición o serialidad (la multiplicación de elementos idénticos surge de la aceptación de una realidad aislada, en la que no se acentúa nada) y el uso directo de materiales y objetos cotidianos (incluso los objetos y materiales manufacturados tienen que carecer de personalidad;

white herman de vries reflected all of these ideas in his early works. In 1956 he created collages using white paper over a white background and in 1959 made his first white painting by mixing sand with white paint. Though the purpose of these white paintings was to hide the identity of the maker, de vries’s interest in Mahayana Buddhism, Tao and Zen are reflected in them and reveal a personal intent: that of emptiness.

By embracing the Tao principle of Wu Wei (no action) and the Zen mushin (no mind), he aimed to create an artwork that was devoid of meaning, finding plenitude in emptiness and eloquence in silence. This did not mean, however, that there was no existence of matter, as the Mahayana formulation states: “Form is emptiness and the very emptiness is form; emptiness does not differ from form, form does not differ from emptiness; whatever is form, that is emptiness; whatever is emptiness, that is form, the same is true of feelings, perceptions, impulses and consciousness.”5 Here, “form” refers to “body” or the outer appearance of things, while “emptiness” is “inherent existence.” As such, existence is not possible without recognizing a form, in the same way that “there is no such thing as silence [. . .] (as it) remains, inescapably, a form of speech.” 6 This notion of silence or emptiness is made visible in wit is overdaad [white is superabundance] (1960), a book that is completely empty if not for the following words on the last page: wit / wit is overdaad / blanc est superabundance / white is superabundance / weiss ist übermässig / wit / wit / wit is overdaad de vries negates the book of its contents; it is an image of silence from which sound can emanate but without which it cannot exist.

Renunciation of content—the void—became de vries’s content and by abandoning language, he created poetry. This idea is of great significance for the artist, who would return to the question of existence and to the empty image in later works such as empty (2016), an empty frame that is the negation of a picture, a source from which an image might emerge.

Yet its emptiness means fullness, for the mere absence of content suggests its many possibilities.

Aunque la intención de estos cuadros blancos era esconder la identidad de su creador, el interés del artista en el budismo Mahayana, el taoísmo y el zen se refleja en ellos y revela una intención personal: la del vacío. Al adoptar el principio taoísta de Wu Wei (no acción) y el zen mushin (no pensamiento), de vries pretendía crear una obra de arte carente de significado, hallando plenitud en el vacío y elocuencia en el silencio. Eso no significaba, sin embargo, que no existiera la materia, ya que como reza la formulación Mahayana: “la forma es vacío y el propio vacío es la forma; el vacío es igual a la forma y la forma es igual al vacío; sea cual sea la forma, eso es el vacío; sea cual sea el vacío, eso es la forma y lo mismo es aplicable a los sentimientos, las percepciones, los impulsos y la consciencia”5. Aquí, la forma se refiere al “cuerpo” o aspecto exterior de las cosas; mientras que el “vacío” es la “existencia inherente”.

Como tal, la existencia no es posible sin que se reconozca una forma, de la misma manera que “el silencio no existe [. . .] (porque) sigue siendo, ineludiblemente, una forma de discurso”6.

Esta noción de silencio o vacuidad se hace visible en wit is overdaad [blanco es superabundancia] (1960), un libro cuyas páginas están completamente en blanco excepto por las siguientes palabras en la última hoja: wit / wit is overdaad / blanc est superabundance / white is superabundance / weiss ist übermässig / wit / wit/ wit is overdaad de vries le niega al libro su contenido; es una imagen del silencio a partir de la cual puede emanar el sonido pero sin la cual no puede existir. La renuncia al contenido —el vacío— se convirtió en el contenido para de vries y, al abandonar el lenguaje, surgió la poesía.

The white paintings of de vries are devoid of intention and expression; as such, they are devoid of meaning. They are not voids but objects in the world of forms. In these objects, no part is more important than the other. They are simply “that,” something concrete and real, neither abstract nor conceptual, and both impersonal and personal. But they are also an act of liberation, an act of a quiet and unmoved understanding that he has learned from the teachings of Zen master Takuan Soho. random objectivations herman de vries reached the point of reducing his paintings to such a degree that they consisted merely of white surfaces. “i wanted to return to form after achieving this emptiness. i made a number of reliefs and collages with a homogenous distribution of elements, the homogenous structures. the form could not be developed further without giving up the absolute openness and freedom that i had just attained.”7 His fascination with the natural world, accompanied by a growing interest in language and philosophy, especially Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, made him realize how “philosophical problems are solved by looking into the workings of our language ‘not by giving new information, but by arranging what we have always known.’”8 de vries applied the same principle when he made works based on his scientific knowledge and, from 1962 to 1975, worked on a large series that “evolves on the basis of a method, in which the integration of artistic creation and scientific systematics is central.”9 The random objectivations series pretended to eradicate everything personal or subjective— principles that his informal works already advocated—using the concept of chance as it is applied in scientific experiments. de vries worked as a biologist at the Institute for Applied Biological Research in Nature in the Dutch city of Arnhem for sixteen years.

In the course of one scientific project aimed at determining aspects such as the distribution of natural elements, mineral deposits, and plant and animal life, he had to make an experiment on an objective situation where environmental influences were reduced to the point that they had no significant effects on the results.

series and for this, he used Table XXXIII of Fisher and Yates’s Statistical Tables for Biological, Agricultural and Medical Research, a collection of ordered numbers that are random10 series. de vries read the numbers given in the table and assigned a value to each digit. A value could be a color, a symbol, or a form (like circles, lines, or even three-dimensional elements). Making a grid on a blank surface, he then arranged the values according to the grid’s number system. This way, he obtained visual information—a term that at the time was used to replace the word “art”—where all subjectivity and emotional or instinctive decision-making were eliminated. This choice of depersonalization was as important as the creative act itself.

For de vries, the modern artist’s task was to close the gap between humans and their present-day surroundings, using knowledge and technological possibilities in diverse ways by applying to visual art that which science has already exploited.

The studies for the random objectivations series were translated onto direct observations of nature, which became models of realities.

With a random program he was able to simulate, for example, the distribution of young and old pine trees by the wind.

also had an influence on the visual experience of that sur face. i called these dots, after wittgenstein (tractatus 2.0131), 'argumentstellen' ('argument sets'). the position of the various points was determined in the same way as with 'de lijnen' ('the lines') (1968). here again the visual result was highly variable. i also made dot grid structures: e.g. on a square grid i placed dots of different, randomly determined sizes. thus i was also able to construct random fields in which the programme was based on observations of the distribution of plant species in vegetation. transitions from one plant species to another ('success i o n ' ) c o u l d a l s o b e s i m u l a t e d ." 1 1 The possibilities that randomness offered were endless and the random programs became more and more complex. Eventually, de vries realized that nature—reality—was the best model of itself and that nature’s natural cycles constituted the physical and independent work of art that he should present: “What the artist sees—observes—belongs just as much to his concept as what he makes.”12 chance From randomness, de vries came to the notion of chance. Thinking that “randomness” (Zufall) was a word used “to describe our inability to identify the knot of causes leading to such and such events. [. . . i] tried to develop and make ‘models’: ‘models of reality built from thought form.’”13 Later, he realized that chance did not exist without change. “the chance of the change is the change of the chance and the change of the chance is the chance of the change,” he wrote in his diary while visiting Teheran in 1970.

In the same year, on his way to Ireland he chanced upon the agricultural district of Eschenau in northern Bavaria, close to the Steigerwald forest. Enchanted by the village’s quiet anonymity and its proximity to the forest, he asked around for houses to rent in the area. de vries never got to settle in Ireland. Since then, he has been living in Eschenau.

In this new, laid-back atmosphere he started to live in accordance with his ideas about the order of nature, which he is part of and where things coexisted without hierarchy. Thus, he decided to write his name in lower case as an expression of his belief in equality and his opposition to any and all hierarchy. chance & change has been one of his mottos ever since. For him, these are two related concepts that have played an important role in his life and work. He adopts them as an artist, scientist, philosopher, and poet. Change creates possibilities of chance. Every moment and every place is a field of chance—whether it be the twelve-meter diameter of the sanctuary (1993), a protected space in Stuttgart untroubled by human intervention, or the tiny lot of 16dm2 (1974) from a meadow where 473 plants can be found. Each chance field has a unique condition that can create different possibilities of change. Nothing is permanent; everything evolves.

The idea of impermanence is related to emptiness expressed in Mahayana Buddhism.

The Sanskrit śūnyatā14, usually symbolized as a perfect circle rendered in a single brushstroke, represents the lack of substantiality or independence of things. Everything, including every sentient being, is always in a state of change— like the three huge burned Acacia tree trunks in burned III (2014–2015), metamorphosed by fire to become shiny, black sculptures. They symbolize “the process of being / the process of destruction (de struction) / the process of becoming,”15 another of de vries’s mottos with its characteristic play of words and meanings. On a scientific level, change creates morphological and behavioral diversity, but it is also what determines any minor development in the life of any organism. On an existential level, it is a poetic becoming: the emergence of something as itself, which the artist exposes and makes visible for us, thus breaking into our consciousness. nature as primary reality herman de vries has subordinated his artistic means to nature’s work of art. He wants to provide minimal interpretations of what reality is and encourages us to perceive and think accordingly. Many of his works are the result of searching, collecting, and showing elements from the real world. The world is reality and extends from the small town

where he lives and his forest to all the faraway places he visits on his travels. de vries feels at one with nature, for every element is necessary for the whole to exist. We breathe the oxygen that plants emit; we give life to them by the air we exhale. They need water to make them grow and we consume their nutrients in order to survive. It is a relation of interdependence, where all parts are equally important for the whole—a natural cycle that he tackles in hear my breath—i am alive (2016) or drinking from the stream (2007). Human existence is based on this; therefore, he considers nature his primary reality, a reality that is subject to a universal law of randomness: “that which may seem ‘natural’ or ‘logical’ is subsumed under a condition of actuality that is beyond the order we may be trying, intellectually, to impose.”16 In autumn 1975, de vries and his wife susanne placed a sheet of paper underneath an apple tree and let its leaves fall, later gluing each leaf to the exact spot where it fell.

1, 2 and 3 hours under my apple tree (1975) is the transition from drawn elements to natural elements; from statistical tables to natural processes. With this work, de vries wants to make visible that which cannot normally be seen: chance and change. chance & change is de vries’s dynamic version of the principle of evolution, taking into account not only the development but the variation of species—a variation that can be appreciated in works such as die steine (stones from the province of león) (2017), different stones gathered from the province of León and carefully exhibited on tall, wooden plinths; humulus lupulus (from carrizo de la ribera, león) (2017), an installation six meters in diameter of lupulus flowers from a recent harvest in León;

or earth from león (2017), sixteen one by two meter parcels of soil that reveal the geological qualities of the land. In these works, de vries uses elements from nature “as is,” without any intervention.

He just presents them. Their specificity to the province of León—an area rich in natural heritage, a variety of habitats, faunas, forest ecosystems, geological diversity, and paleobiogeographical history—is a call to become aware of the unity and diversity of the world that surrounds us.

On the other hand, morphological diversity can be appreciated in works such as bamboos I and II (2014), a collection of sixteen different species and sixteen parts of one species of bamboo from Indonesia, both showing aspects of variation; or the sickles (from spain) (2017), based on a tool that forms an extension of the body and connects us with the crops that we grow, harvest, and consume. By placing objects of the same kind together, he reveals the uniqueness of each one.

The same goes for the ground on which we walk. Throughout his life, de vries has collected earth from all parts of the world. the catalogue earth museum is an ongoing compilation of more than 7,000 samples of all kinds of earth (limestone, sandstone, volcanic peat, marl, etc.) that the artist started in 1978. Without any scientific intention, each sample is treated as if it were a scientific specimen: It is dried, placed in plastic bags, boxed, and labeled with the date of collection and place of origin. de vries later transfers it onto paper, rubbing a small sample with his fingers until he obtains a square or rectangular color field, and keeps them in identical boxes or displays them like a huge library of pantone colors. de vries also presents his pressed plants in the most straightforward manner, as if they were frozen in time. While artists of the fifteenth century such as Dürer or da Vinci were obsessed with portraying nature in the most realistic way possible in their drawings, works like de vries’s phalaris arundinacea (1990) is a real sample of six meadow plants, pressed and framed on a neutral background. He presents isolated reality, rather than portraying it, to allow us to appreciate each element where no part is more important than the other, just like our role in nature.

Combining individual parts and presenting them as a whole allows de vries to offer a total experience of diversity, or heterogeneity in homogeneity. He realized this in 1970 on a beach in Seychelles, where he picked up broken corals and noticed how each one was created by the same process but was distinct from the other.

This realization was materialized in collected mahé, seychelles (august 1970), a framed collection of twenty-four seashells of the same species. Yet he also combines heterogeneous objects as a means of showing his work process, a process that has a lot to do with walking.

ambulo ergo sum In response to the French philosopher René Descartes’s famous saying, “Cogito ergo sum” (“I think, therefore I am”), the seventeenth-century philosopher Pierre Gassendi stated, “Ambulo ergo sum” (“I walk, therefore I am”). Whereas Descartes implied that the mind exists independently of the body, Gassendi illustrates that in the act of walking, mind and body are interconnected. de vries takes Gassendi’s motto to heart and adapts it. At the age of 86, he spends at least two hours a day walking through the Steigerwald forest where he gathers soil samples, plants, shells, or objects of human origin. They may be broken, discarded, or returned to nature—in any case, they are materials he encountered spontaneously and that attracted his attention.

Although his scientific background has given him the ability to look at nature systematically, the act of collecting is not determined by a system but by the “poetry of the moment,” the “visual opportunity.” The materials make their way into his journals, which show how his work is at the service of art.

They are reports through which he communicates, “but it is by its very nature subjective and partial . . .

Its purpose is to record a process or a progress in time, in a particular place or on a particular journey, and to use the events as the basis for reflection and speculation . . .”17 His journals thus sum up the idea of movement through time and space, two elements that are necessary for change. journal de la gomera (1996–1997) and im winter auf dem grossen knetzberg – ein journal (2013) are composed of small frames with samples of different objects, natural elements, or photographs of these places that form the visual memory of an experience.

By showing two journals of different origins, he juxtaposes two realities and two moments in time: a gaze at a newly trodden land and the rediscovery of a familiar environment with traces of human interaction. The contents of these frames (the “parts”) are carefully selected, collected, and presented as a “whole,” a personal diary. They are not scientific samples, not ideas about objects, but “facts” or “reality,” “the objects themselves.”

They are the documents of a process of consciousness, as the artist himself explains: “when I said that ‘nature is art’ [. . .] I could say that because I see nature as a conscious process which is experienced through the senses. Therein [lies] my identity, which is what I communicate: my constant awareness of my social function.”18 to be herman de vries’ work is a call to awareness, an awareness that can be achieved through an “empty mind”: “In all things, it is important to forget your ‘mind’ and become one with the work at hand,”19 Takuan Soho advises.

Once again we see the concepts of Wu Wei and mushin in this approach: to be mizu no kokoro, or mind-like-water, becoming one with who we are and what we observe. Through these philosophical ideas, de vries speaks about his relation to nature that is first and foremost experienced with the senses. Thought comes later, because without a preceding experience, thought cannot be formulated.

Thus, more than visual products, his work is an absolute sensory experience that immerses us in the different colors of the earth in the earth museum catalogue (1978-2015), the aroma of humulus lupulus (from carrizo de la ribera, león) (2017), or the sound of the artist’s respiration in hear my breath—i am alive (2016).

Because "it is not only what the artist is doing, making or thinking that are part of his concept, but also what he perceives, what he takes up to himself. he is connec ted to the world by his senses: his eyes, his sense of taste, his e a r s . i t ’s n o t j u s t t h e e n v i r o n m e n t , i t ’s h i s l i f e s p a c e a n d h e is connected to his life space all the time, not least by breathing. he takes air in, he lets it out, he takes it in, he lets it out, like e v e r y b o d y e l s e ." 2 0 epilogue A few minutes’ drive from herman de vries’s house is the Steigerwald forest, which he frequents—to stroll, to meditate, to observe, to feel. In this forest, which is as much his studio as the one at his home, he finds provision for all his needs, for it is a biotope that is inhabited by countless forms of life, witnesses to a never-ending cycle of events and subject to constant modification and change. In this forest he knows every sprout, every plant, every shrub, and every tree. And in the silence of this forest, he has left several messages engraved in the stones, as if giving them a voice.

In a seemingly sacred clearing overshadowed by the large trees that surround it, there is a stone amongst the shrubs with the Latin inscription, sator arepo tenet opera rotas, which forms what is known as the Sator Square 21. The sator is the sower or creator while arepo is opera read backwards, which de vries interprets as “no work” or “no action”, coming back to the idea of Wu Wei. Thus, “the sower doing no thing keeps the work turning” or “what goes around comes around.” Could it also be an interpretation of the śūnyatā symbol like the engraved dot of gold that he left in certain places, a dot in infinite space 22? “This, here,” they seem to call out to us. Elsewhere, there is the sign of infinity, while another stone bears the Hindu sign om.

In a humid spot of the forest, moss has begun to cover a large part of the gold engravings of a stone that reads veritas existentiae, threatening its existence. That is part of its cycle.

chance & change is one of the key concepts in the work of herman de vries. It is a formulation that he has been using since 1970 and that neatly sums up both his thought and his artistic practice. These two simple words allude to two fundamental questions for philosophy and science: What is change? (for a physical object: What is motion?) and what is chance? (for a physical object: What is regularity?). These questions have led to a long history of speculation and research in which human culture has developed and which human knowledge has used as a touchstone, not least because the regularities that were discovered for objects were also applied to living nature and mankind.

The concepts of chance and change have a lot to do with one another – for example, they can be related as cause and effect. However, herman de vries does something remarkable in the form that he gives the formulation: the use of the & sign suggests that they function in relation to one another and may as two aspects of the same thing be inextricably intertwined, as in yin & yang, dark & light, birth & decay. herman de vries began to use the adage chance & change during a period in which his work underwent a fundamental development.

Around 1970 he wanted to give visibility and intelligibility to nature as the free and autonomous system par excellence; in his random objectivations he developed an artistic practice in which systematicity and chance reflected the regularity and freedom of nature respectively.

After a while, however, he grew dissatisfied with this reflection, and nature itself came to assume the place of the work of art. In 1975 he concluded that no single model or representation can be complex enough to do justice to the complexity of nature. From that moment on his motto became: nature = art. The concepts of chance and change, cause and effect are interpretations that we impose on nature; in physical reality they are aspects of a single process.

This step in the thinking of de vries is comparable to the step that Charles Darwin took when he thought through the process of evolution and diversification of the species so far that an external cause or stimulus was no longer needed to understand the logic of the process.

Darwin severed the link between biology and theology, between physics and metaphysics,

just like any other science that frees itself from philosophy1. herman de vries abandoned his original thinking in models and systems in 1975; chance & change became one of his philosophical themes 2. The drawings and reliefs of his random objectivations were replaced by processual works like 1, 2 and 3 hours under my apple tree and 16 dm2 in which systematic research is deployed for a different purpose in the end.

Another important guiding principle for the oeuvre preceded chance & change; it guided the artist from the first years of his activity in the direction of a consistent reduction of his visual language and a minimalisation of his aesthetic resources. The concept was wit, leeg, empty [white, empty] and the word that herman de vries used for it corresponded to the name of a current in European art around 1960: zero, known as 0 or nul in its Dutch variants.

This name was adopted by a group of artists who put on exhibitions, published magazines and organised events in fairly loose association with one another. In the Netherlands they were Jan J. Schoonhoven, herman de vries, Armando, Henk Peeters and Jan Henderikse; they tried to link up with such German artists as Uecker, Piene and Mack, French artists like Klein and Aubertin, and Italian ones such as Fontana, Castellani and Piero Manzoni3. In the Netherlands herman de vries published the magazine 0=nul, first with Henk Peeters and Armando, later on his own. In 1963 he published a text entitled ‘0=nul’ in this magazine. It presented his interpretation of the international currents known in Dutch as nul, zero, nieuwe conceptie, de nieuwe stijl, nieuwe tendenzen and nieuwe zakelijkheid4.

In the case of herman de vries, the orientation towards the concept zero, nul, 0 has a source of inspiration that was not shared by all of the artists mentioned above. His interest in the writings of oriental sages, particularly Chinese Taoism and Japanese Zen Buddhism, had led him around 1960 to a radical reduction of his artistic manner of expression. In this period he concentrated on white works in a variety of media: paintings created by the homogeneous painting of a panel with white paint mixed with fine sand, while his sculptures were essentially white painted ready made objects with an extremely simple form, such as cardboard cylinders turned into columns, or a block of wood of random dimensions that, when painted white, became the physical equivalent of

This means that he takes a step further and places the elements of an opposition on the same ontological footing. With regard to the concept

zero, it is here suggested that it provides practical and philosophical access to an area in which existential oppositions such as here and everywhere are cancelled. This area – a landscape?

– has the character of the elusive now: it is.

Once we realise that the empty circle – with a Japanese word ensõ – is the symbol for the oblivion of satori, of the enlightening insight that all oppositions are illusions, we also understand that the inspiration of Zen Buddhism has been of great importance for herman de vries in the later part of his oeuvre too6.

If we examine the text "0=nul" in more detail, we find such statements as "as far as I am concerned, art ceases to be art here" and "there are no opposites"; the text, which has the character of a manifesto, culminates in the words "zero is not a point of departure, but a level of existence".

Moreover, beneath his text herman de vries placed a quotation from the Zen master Takuan, taken from one of the early sources of his knowledge of Zen Buddhism: Daisetz T. Suzuki, Zen und die Kultur Japans [Zen and Japanese culture]: "in jedem von uns steckt etwas, das unbewegtes begreifen heiszt. unbewegtes begreifen ist das beweglichste ding der welt: es ist bereit, in jede denkbare richtung zu gehen, und hat doch keinen einhaltepunkt. da ist kein gedanke an ich und du mehr - alles ist leere. aus solcher absoluten leere entspringt die wunderbarste entfaltung des tuns".

"In each of us there is something called immovable wisdom. Immovable wisdom is the most movable thing in the world: it is prepared to move in any conceivable direction, and yet has no final destination. There is no longer any idea of I and you – everything is empty. From such absolute emptiness springs the most wonderful unfolding of action".

The passage is taken from Takuan’s Letter on immovable wisdom, on sword fighting7. The letter deals with the mental attitude of the sword fighter; if he is to be successful, then paradoxically he must not concentrate in his actions on action and effect, action and success, cause and effect, but he must make his mind empty. Without holding back, without reflection, he must allow his capacity to react to benefit from the experience that he has gained in his training and raise his mind to a higher, instinctive plane. His wisdom must be immovable, his actions must be direct.

The letter of Takuan not only gives herman de vries – like other Western artists who have been inspired by the writings of and about the Zen masters – hints about how to arrive at zero in his artistic practice, in other words, to reduce artistic resources and actions to their essence8; it also helps him to find the continuity on the other side of the point where art ceases to be art, where the artist ceases to be artist, artistic innovator, author, social reformer, rebel or philosopher. de vries took the crucial step in 1975, when the trained biologist and experienced researcher on nature decided not to present works of art that he had made himself any more, but to present the works of art of nature. This did not mean that the artist stepped out of his art; on the contrary, he stepped into it. Placing nature’s work of art at the centre, making it visible and the guiding principle of all his decisions, resulted in an ecology in which art, life and thought were interwoven and zero was a living premise.

That is why de vries can call the Steigerwald – he lives at one of the entrances to this large wooded area – "my 200 km2 studio". It is this ecology that led to a text like zero is the gate.

An example is the series of photographs of himself nude in the nature of his biotope, starting in 1975 with the poet in his poetry – schöntal, and which has grown into a series of statements (1975 to the present).

They are simple documentary images of the presence of herman de vries in nature, sometimes accompanied by his assistant Marion Reißner for the feminine aspect. The poem my poetry is the world also makes it clear that the poet, the poem and poetry are one. The poet is part of a poetry that is (re)written, seen, read, eaten and slept by him.

This position calls into question the importance of language as the medium and purpose of poetry.

At the end of the publication vijf manifesten over taal – en een gedicht [five manifestos on language – and a poem] (1975) the manifestos are followed by two empty white pages and then a dried grass that occupies the physical space of the poem and thereby replaces language.

The important triptych 1, 2 and 3 hours under my apple tree from October 1975 finds a way of translating the random drawings and random reliefs of the previous years9 into a tangible, material form in which the artist limits himself to presenting his perception.

Se refiere a un pasaje de Carta sobre la comprensión inmóvil de Takuan, que en España apareció con el título de Misterios de la sabiduría inmóvil del maestro Takuan en Ediciones Paidós Ibérica y traducida por Godofredo González, un texto sobre la lucha con espadas8. La carta trata de la mentalidad del maestro de la espada; si quiere tener éxito, paradójicamente, en sus acciones no debe concentrarse en la acción y el efecto, la actuación y el éxito, la causa y la consecuencia, sino que debe vaciar su espíritu. Sin reprimirse, sin reflexionar, debe permitir que su capacidad de reacción se aproveche de la experiencia que ha adquirido en el entrenamiento y llevar su espíritu a un plano más elevado e instintivo. Su comprensión debe ser inmóvil, sus acciones deben ser inmediatas.

La carta de Takuan le ofrece a herman de vries – como también a otros artistas occidentales inspirados por los escritos de los maestros zen o escritos que trataban de estos mismos maestros – no sólo puntos de referencia para llegar a zero en su práctica artística, es decir: para reducir a su esencia las acciones y los medios artísticos9, sino que también le ayuda a encontrar continuidad en aquel lado del punto donde el arte deja de ser arte, donde el artista deja de ser artista, innovador artístico, autor, innovador social, rebelde o filósofo.

El paso decisivo lo dio de vries en 1975, cuando después de haber estudiado Biología y haberse convertido en un experto naturalista, decidió no seguir presentando por más tiempo obras de arte realizadas por él, sino obras de arte de la naturaleza, lo que no quiere decir que el artista se aparte de su arte; al contrario, se introduce en el mismo. El centrar la atención en la obra de arte de la naturaleza, hacerla visible y convertirla en hilo conductor de todas sus decisiones tiene como resultado una ecología en la que el arte, la vida y el pensamiento se entretejen y en la que zero es un punto de partida vivo. De ahí que de vries convenga en llamar al Steigerwald – vive literalmente en una de las entradas de este vasto bosque – "mi gran taller de 200 km2". De esta ecología proviene un texto como zero is the gate.

The sheet of paper that is inserted in the process of nature records and makes visible; it is no longer a medium, but takes part in the process of perception.

In the work over de typografie van het toeval [on the typography of chance] (1975), the chance that had played such an important part in the creation of the earlier images is no longer elaborated by means of a visual strategy, but physically shown. Beech leaves that have been eaten away are chance & change documents presented together, and this structure is called a typographic structure. herman de vries hereby suggests that the two rows of five leaves are like the verses of a two-line poem. What happens here is indeed what happens in a poem: the elements are comparable with one another within the strophe and interpret one another. At the same time each individual beech leaf is called a document. Every product of nature is a work of art; as a document of itself, this leaf presents the total natural process in all its complexity. Why should we not consider the workings of nature as a single grand poem, as a single comprehensive typographic work of art?

This is not to say that herman de vries does not follow any aesthetic strategies; but arranging leaves in rows or catching them as they fall are strategies of a fundamentally different kind from those that he used in his random objectivations. The latter were derived from the properties of the image and were therefore not tied to a representational intention10. de vries derives his new procedures from natural processes by observing them; he immerses himself in nature with the intention of showing its processes and forms by interfering as little as possible himself.

He could find inspiration for the strategy of collaborating with nature in certain methods that are applied in biology: sampling a landscape,

collecting, drying and describing plants in a herbarium, taking samples for demographic research, and so on. Such scientific strategies provide herman de vries with an objective standpoint, so that he can recede to the background as the author of the work of art and give all the room to the natural object or physical process that he wants to show as a work of art. But that is where the parallel ends – de vries does not analyse or interpret the natural object, nor does he classify it or force it into a system.

He uses systematic principles in his presentations to make the natural elements comparable in terms of their visibility with the aim of activating observation. He shows each element as an individual form, as a document of itself. This making visibility visible is essentially a way of working that continues the spirit of zero.

The work 16 dm2 was done in 197411. It is a climax in the oeuvre and shows how a scientific, systematic approach leads to an aesthetic, cognitive and philosophical experience of the first order.

In a meadow in the landscape around Eschenau where he lives, de vries explores the vegetation of a 40 x 40 cm sod, the size of a paving stone.

All of the 473 plants that he finds in it are charted, removed, dried and mounted on paper. The full presentation of this work takes up 473 times 21 x 30 cm on a wall and can never be taken in at a single glance, in stark contrast to the size of the paving stone.

Esto no quiere decir que herman de vries no maneje estrategias estéticas, sino que la colocación en fila de hojas o la recogida de hojas tal como caen son estrategias de un carácter fundamentalmete distinto del que él empleaba en sus random objectivations. Las últimas se derivaban de las propiedades de la imagen y, por ello, se encontraban aún vinculadas a una intención representativa10. de vries toma sus nuevos métodos de trabajo de los procesos naturales y de la observación de los mismos; él piensa a partir de la naturaleza con la intención de mostrar sus procesos y formas, interviniendo lo menos posible. Para el trabajo con la naturaleza, de vries pudo encontrar inspiración en determinados métodos que se manejan en la biología: el muestreo de un paisaje, la recolección, secado y descripción de plantas en un herbario, la toma de muestras para una investigación sobre la población, etcétera. Semejantes estrategias científicas le proporcionan a herman de vries un punto de vista objetivo para que él, como autor de la obra de arte, pueda pasar al segundo plano y dejarle todo el espacio al objeto natural o al proceso físico que quiere mostrar como obra de arte. Pero ahí termina también el parecido, ya que de vries no analiza o interpreta el objeto natural ni lo clasifica o lo fuerza dentro de un sistema. En sus presentaciones emplea principios sistemáticos para hacer comparables los elementos naturales en lo referente a su visibilidad, con el objetivo de activar la mirada. Muestra cada elemento como figura individual, como documento de sí mismo. Este hacer visible la visibilidad es, en esencia, una manera de trabajar que continúa el espíritu de zero.

La obra 16 dm2 se realizó en 1974 11. Es un punto culminante en el conjunto de su obra y deja claro cómo un enfoque científico y sistemático conduce a una experiencia estética, cognitiva y filosófica de primer orden. En un prado, en el paisaje alrededor de su domicilio en Eschenau, de vries explora la vegetación

the construction of drawings, sculptures and reliefs was based on the scientific tables of random numbers used by herman de vries in his work as a researcher of nature (see: to be, pp. 26-36, 4753). So as a system his random objectivations fall under the concept of an autonomous, concrete art as defined by Theo van Doesburg in 1930.

As for the themes underlying them, de vries’ random objectivations refer to dynamic processes of the reality of nature. When herman de vries later called a grass or a leaf concrete art, he was deliberately undermining Van Doesburg’s definition.

de vries does not select a single example of each type of plant for his presentation either – examples in that sense do not exist for him – but shows every individual plant. This enables him to go beyond the herbarium and to turn his back on isolating, selective thinking. He stimulates a way of seeing and reflecting that absorbs the physical reality of this piece of meadow.

The principle of sampling reality assumes a different significance on the basis of herman de vries’ particular perspective. Individuals are no longer excluded on the basis of a priori concepts; on the contrary, individuals are honoured on the basis of their physical existence. He applied the same principle to human culture. In that same year, 1975, de vries completed a work that derived from his travels in Africa and Asia entitled catalogue incomplète d’exposition complète de luang-prabang, a random sample of my visual chances, 18-1-1975 [incomplete catalogue of the complete exhibition of luang prabang. a random sample of my visual chances, 18-1-1975]. herman de vries has often carried out photographic projects on his travels, based on the idea that in a different context, in a different landscape and in a different culture he is himself different, a different person12.

According to the tables of random numbers that he had used for his random objectivations down to 1975 13, he drew up a protocol on which moments he would take photographs of what he saw in the city of Luang Prabang in Laos on 18 January 1975. These thirty-five documents form what he calls the incomplete catalogue of a complete exhibition, of the total work of art that is produced by the city and its inhabitants. de vries also had a poster printed with the words:

También el vasto earth museum, en el que herman de vries ha trabajado desde 1972, muestra de una manera física lo diverso que es nuestro mundo14. La valoración y visibilidad de la diversidad –una palabra importante, pero que en la actualidad se ha ido desgastando hasta convertirse en un cliché casi sin contenido– es a mi modo de ver una de las actividades más importantes en la obra de herman de vries. de vries pasa por alto los contrastes, las oposiciones y las paradojas debido a su orientación al concepto zero en todo lo que hace; en sus obras –que provienen de su ecología de la vida, el arte y el pensamiento–, suprime la exclusión de lo especial y específico mediante la inclusión, la valoración y la presentación físicas de lo individual.

What is perhaps the actual theme of the exhibition was indicated at the top of the poster: poésie actuelle, which can be interpreted as the poetry of now, of the authenticity of the moment, of a reality that is taking place.

The large-scale earth museum on which herman de vries has been working since 1972 also makes physically visible how diverse the world we live in is14. The appreciation and revelation of diversity – an important word that has today been eroded to become an almost meaningless cliché – is in my opinion one of the most important activities in the oeuvre of herman de vries. Through his orientation towards the concept zero, de vries bypasses oppositions, contradictions, paradoxes in everything. In his works, which arise from his ecology of life, art and thought, he obviates the exclusion of the

particular and specific with the physical inclusion, appreciation and presentation of the individual. There is no hierarchy between a so-called pure earth pigment and an impure earth colour that comes from a random field or dirt track.

There is no molinia plant that presents the genus molinia better or worse than any other, there are just individual moliniae, each of which is the unique document of itself. herman de vries hereby debunks the opposition between the particular and the general as an opposition and draws attention to their unity.

Zero, understood as an existential impulse, has been the guiding principle for herman de vries in the creation of an oeuvre that is among the most radical and innovative positions in the art and philosophy of the twentieth century. A recent work, empty, presents once again the "existential level zero" and makes it clear that, if we are insufficiently aware of what individuality means, our awareness of what diversity is also falls short. herman de vries advocates the awareness that life on earth is manifested as an infinite number of individual forms. This is a position with important moral consequences, but that is another chapter ●

sitting in the train from arnhem to frankfurt, i’m looking out across the snowy fields. dark lumps of earth form a regular yet never identical pattern. ponies move across a snow-covered field, frequently changing their position in relation to each other. on the edge of the opposite platform at emmerich station i see an irregularly undulating line resulting from the melting snow, which permeates the concrete. it starts snowing again and the wind blows the now wet snowflakes onto the platform under the open roof, where they momentarily form white dots on the grey stone, then change into dark patches. a long row of wagons filled with cokes moves along the platform. a load of energy on its way to holland. a crow approaches, lands on the edge of the platform and then immediately flies away again. chance and change situations form a complicated chance and change structure. a few observed situations from an endless series: every time, every place, everything. fields and drawings, trees and objects, objects and fields, there are no contradictions. chance is everywhere, it’s the conditions that determine. chance & change, i wrote in my little notebook, 4 july 1970, in tehran, on my way from arnhem to bombay and the seychelles, intending to buy an island over there together with friends, to go and live there. the island was never bought. chance and change — change and chance ●

what has been thought, read, pondered combines with what has been seen, experienced. this is something that is very often made clear in my memories. thus, my book chancefields3 is closely linked to a small meadow in our forests and, there, to a few very specific places: those where, in the course of a walk, i conceived the idea for the book. the same is true for pratyagatmananda saraswati’s vedanta philosophy4: when i think of it a mental image of a very specific stretch of forest comes automatically to my mind. there, as i walked, the concept of “continuum point” must have fixed itself in my cerebral cortex. the path itself — at the time, still without gravel — some specific trees, some specific views, the climbing ivy, the view of the river from above. also there, in another place, a further association with the vedanta philosophy would emerge: the expression “patent wonder”, what is. my formulation “to be all ways to be”5 connects me to a few specific places of kathmandu and the view that i had of the inner courtyard from the window of my hotel. i was able to illustrate my book argumentstellen6 [argument places] with a series of photos of the interior courtyard: taken from the centre of the courtyard, the photographs show the four opposite sides of the same space in completely different ways. the aim was also to find out how to formulate in a differentiated way the conditions that turn this vacuum into a ‘space’ through the different viewpoints of this 'space'7. the sound recordings of a stream 8 talk about the topic “different & identic”: six small waterfalls produce sounds which, although variable and characteristic of each specific waterfall, are at the same time part of the same current — water, which moves constantly, which flows, participates and continues its ceaseless march. is that the individuality of the waterfall — or is it an aspect of the identity of the water? the same question may arise about the fire: is a bonfire something individual or is it a realization of the fire appearing only by chance9?

lo pensado, lo leído, lo reflexionado se unen a lo visto, a lo experimentado. eso es algo que se pone de manifiesto muy a menudo en mis recuerdos. así, mi libro chance-fields3 está íntimamente ligado a una pequeña pradera de nuestros bosques y, allí, a unos lugares muy concretos: a aquellos donde, en el transcurso de un paseo, concebí la idea para el libro. lo mismo me pasa con la vedanta philosophy de pratyagatmananda saraswati4: cuando pienso en ella me viene automáticamente a la cabeza una imagen mental de un tramo muy concreto del bosque. allí, mientras caminaba, se debe haber fijado en la corteza cerebral el concepto de “continuum point”. el propio camino —en aquella época, aún sin gravilla—, determinados árboles, determinadas vistas, la yedra trepadora, la vista del curso del río desde lo alto. también allí, en otro lugar, surgiría otra asociación con su vedanta philosophy, la expresión “patent wonder”: el milagro patente, lo que es. mi formulación “to be all ways to be”5 [ser todas las maneras de ser] me vincula con unos lugares concretos de katmandú y con la vista que tenía del patio interior desde la ventana del hotel. pude ilustrar mi libro argumentstellen6 [lugares argumentales] con una serie de fotos de ese patio interior: tomadas desde el centro de los cuatro lados opuestos del patio, las fotografías muestran el mismo espacio de formas completamente diferentes. se trataba asimismo de averiguar cómo formular de manera diferenciada las condiciones que convierten ese vacío en un “espacio” a partir de las distintas perspectivas de ese “espacio”7. las grabaciones sonoras de un arroyo 8 versan sobre el tema “different & identic”: seis pequeñas cascadas producen sonidos que, aunque van cambiando y son característicos de cada una en particular, forman parte al tiempo de la misma corriente — del agua, que se mueve constantemente, que fluye, participa y prosigue incesante su marcha.

carefully distinguishes between the english word random, translation from the german zufall, which refer us to randomness (that is, an objectifiable form of chance) and the word chance, english and german, which is used to describe the experience of contingency, fortuiteness, fortune, possibility. (note by anne moeglin-delcroix)

these are topics that i came across again in the diamant sutra, a central text of mahayana buddhism: "personal existence, personal existence as non-existence, has been taught by the tathagata; because it is [...] neither existence nor non-existence. therefore, it is called ‘personal existence’.”10 here we can notice again how hard it is for language to address the issue. this is due to the nature of language. language is an analytical tool. it divides the world into this and that; here and there; yes and no. we give names and thus separate the one from the whole, which provides us with a great social force, because we can communicate our experiences (but, at the same time, we pay with the loss of unity). in this way, language deceives us (and even so, i’m using it now). and the author of the diamant sutra was not able to do without language either. it is the vehicle... but you have to be able to get off it while it is moving. in the 1960s, in berne, a female friend11 advised me to read wittgenstein’s tractatus12. at the time it cost me some effort to familiarize myself with wittgenstein’s texts. i took the little book with me to the solitude of the biesbosch natural park. the translation of this place-name is “reed forest”. it was an extensive delta with forests of willows, immense reed beds and a tide with a difference of about 3 m between the ebb and the flow. i lived there in a small cabin along the banks of a flooded polder. one night a strange noise woke me up: thousands of wild geese were landing on the water. in that place, i spent several periods of between a few weeks and a month and a half. during the day i frequently went rowing on a boat and, at night, i began reflecting on the tractatus. soon i established a playful relationship with the book: applying a random program, i distributed each of the letters of the sentence “the world is everything that is the case”13 in a semiotic field — a consequence that arouse from the content of the text itself: this was also the case. according to the result that emerges from its content, the same could be done with “the world divides into facts”14. however, i had to write a note: “and it does not divide!” what fascinated me was the analytic relationship wittgenstein established between language and reality, and the cracks he left in his system were also significant for me: “there is indeed the inexpressible. this shows itself; it is the mystical.”15

¿es esa la individualidad de la cascada — o es un aspecto de la identidad del agua? la misma pregunta se puede plantear sobre el fuego: ¿es una hoguera algo individual o es una realización del fuego que aparece solo por casualidad, by chance9? son temas con los que me reencontré en el diamant sutra, un texto central del budismo mahayana: “[…] la existencia personal, como no-existencia ha sido enseñada por el tathagata; porque no es […] ni existencia ni no-existencia. por tanto, es llamada ‘existencia personal’”10. aquí se nota también cuán difícil le es a la lengua abordar la cuestión. eso se debe a la naturaleza de la lengua. la lengua es un instrumento analítico. divide el mundo en esto y aquello; aquí y allí; sí y no. ponemos nombres y de este modo separamos lo uno del todo. eso nos proporciona una gran fuerza social, porque podemos comunicar nuestras experiencias (pero, al mismo tiempo, lo pagamos con la pérdida de la unidad, unity). de esta manera la lengua nos engaña (y, aun así, la estoy utilizando ahora). y el autor del diamant sutra tampoco ha podido dejar de utilizar la lengua. es el vehículo… pero hay que ser capaz de apearse de ella en marcha. en los años sesenta, en berna, una amiga11 me aconsejó leer el tractatus12 de wittgenstein. en aquel momento me costó cierto esfuerzo familiarizarme con los textos de wittgenstein. me llevé el pequeño libro a la soledad del parque natural de biesbosch. la traducción de este topónimo reza “bosque de juncos”. era un extenso delta con bosques de sauces, inmensos carrizales y una marea con una diferencia de unos 3 m entre el flujo y el reflujo. viví allí en una pequeña cabaña junto a la orilla de un pólder inundado. una noche me despertó un ruido extraño: miles de gansos salvajes se estaban posando en el agua. pasé en aquel lugar varias temporadas de entre unas pocas semanas y un mes y medio. durante el día salía con frecuencia a remar con una barca y, por las noches, reflexionaba sobre el tractatus. no tardé mucho en tener con el libro una relación lúdica: aplicando un programa aleatorio, distribuí cada una de las letras de la frase “el mundo es todo lo que es el caso (lo que acaece)”13 en un campo semiótico —una consecuencia que se puede derivar de este texto: también esto acaecía—. según la consecuencia que se desprende de su contenido, lo mismo se

we can also replace the world “mystical” by the word “reality” (“wirklichkeit”)16, which shows itself and is not understandable, and this reality is the revelation, the only one that we have available at first and last instance. wonderful was also the relationship of wittgenstein with the utility of philosophizing: “he must so to speak throw away the ladder, after he has climbed up on it. he must surmount these propositions; then he sees the world rightly.” “whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent.”17 there is a crack, a hole, a freedom in which art, the figure, have their meaning and function. and also in this respect the tractatus has something to say: “the picture represents what it represents [...].”18 and “what the picture represents is its sense.”19 the pair of words ‘chance & change’ (no chance without change!), with which i’ve worked for so long, is related to a narrow street and a small terrace on the roof of the arya hotel in tehran, where i stayed a couple of days on the way to bombay and the seychelles, where i formulated the pair of words for the first time in my notebook (1970). long journeys have been very important for me. they provided me with the experience of change. the stops in the journey, especially in the journey to bombay and the seychelles, provided me with a direct experience of “argument places”. in istanbul, jozgat, erzerum, tabriz, tehran, meshed, herat, kabul, amritsar, etc. my memory about the past was new — it felt different, i valued it differently — and the future opened up, aroused my curiosity. on that trip, i took a photo from the window of the room of all the hotels where i stayed to document my experience of change. in 1973 look out of any window20 emerged out of this, in the house where i live again now, in eschenau. it didn’t matter where i looked, it was there, it was and is always there, before my eyes, and also the chirping of the numerous sparrows that lived and live in the cracks of the walls of this house have been an essential part of that it 21, the miracle in which i participated, of which i am part. my work always revolved around this: the revelation, not always intellectually understood or embraced, but always there. there is nothing else. then, why talk about god? we don’t need either faith or superstition, they are a diversion.

we create this over and over again, and when we do not create it, we die. what we experience is more important than what we think. poetry is an experience of the world, poetry is alive. the job of an artist is not only to represent, but also to discover. our own work as a process of learning in which others can participate. some years ago my experiences with lsd and mescaline were very helpful to me. liberated from all types of conditioning, i was free (0, zero22). and freedom is always at the root of understanding (einsicht). that is how many visual studies came about, first as schematic models (1970-75) carried out with the help of random programs, then with the reality series of photos and then with “reality as document itself”. i came to this idea talking with my wife, susanne, because, ultimately, reality is the most complete “model” and through it i could leave behind other models and schemas. the parts of reality represent the whole. also my “concrete poetry” became concrete in the true sense of the word. one of those photographic series was a random sample of the seeings of my beings (197275). in it i formulated and researched the fact that not only what one thinks and makes belongs to the concept (for lack of a better word), but also what one sees, what is perceived. the series consisted of pairs of photos: first susanne would take a photo of me at a moment, randomly chosen, not known by me, at which she would say: “stop”, so that i kept my eyes on what i had been looking at. then she would pass me the camera and i’d photograph what i saw. in this way a small representation of my world was born, of the world that belonged to my existence. a world which is always different and which causes that i am also always different. as an individual i am part of the world in which i am, that i am. the place where i am is my “argument place”. i exchange myself with my world, regardless of where i am, of what i am. what i am is also described in my book ich bin was ich bin – flora incorporata23, a list of all species of plants (484 species) that i remembered having used or eaten: as food, as a drug, as medicine, as a spice. these plants formed me as i am now, they have transformed, have gathered in this “my” body. the living organism as a processing unit. natural-relations24.

from benjamin lee whorf25 i learned that different visions of the world give rise to different linguistic forms — and also that these different linguistic forms determine the different visions of the world. language deceives, is a ‘splendid network’26, one is a prisoner in it. once i did an experiment. for four weeks i did not pronounce a single word. after that, for a long time i didn’t have much to say, i just needed a few words. in my memory that period has been associated with the garden of the place where i lived in those days: the rosettes of plantago media, which at that time were sprouting from the ground at my feet, are part of it. a young redstart, which had just emerged from a hollow post and stayed still for a moment on it, saw the world for the first time and then went back inside. van gogh said in a letter: “it is the small captains who dominate life” (referring to the cicadas of the provence). if we throw away wittgenstein's ladder27, then we can only remain silent. “the world divides into facts” 28, but it does not divide! it is only language that divides it. in the “flower sutra” we can read that buddha was once asked to give a sermon, to which he replied by simply showing a flower29. i was introduced to the upanishads very early, it was in 1953 when a student of forestry30 which was my neighbour lent me a little book with some fragments translated into dutch. even today there is a large number of upanishadic translations in my library. i studied them thoroughly, although never in a systematic way. i was more of a “random reader”. i would open the book at any page and read a paragraph, allowing its contents to act on me, so that i could reflect on their implications and connect it to the rest of my thoughts. or i would simply forget the content because it was not applicable or understandable for me. yes, i was essentially a “random reader”. and it is very difficult to be something else: among the infinite variety of written and printed thoughts and studies, our orientation in the world is anyway the product of chance31. incidentally, according to my observations, chance is not a phenomenon governed by natural law, but merely an auxiliary word. it designates situations in which we are no longer able to identify the network of causal chains that have led to these situations.

the word zufall comes from the mystique of the upper medium german: “zuoval”, what happens to us inexplicably. my relationship with buddhism, zen buddhism, started very early, the first time around 1957. what impressed me from suzuki 32 was, among other things, his detailed summary of the treaty of takuan about fencing, which emphasized the “quiet understanding”. i connected it with the concept of “being aware” and the freedom of thought associated with that state, from which everything can be developed. alan watts’ book33 taught me, among other things, to see the world as “yathabhutam”, i.e. “as it is”: through direct experience, immediacy, sensitive perception, without any limitation due to names, words or tags. the overcoming of the border between the “i” and the experienced. something i also discovered in meister eckhart’s sermon “warum man sich sogar gottes ledig machen soll” [why one should liberate onself of everything, even of god]34. one always discovers something new. my latest discoveries were ludwig tieck, from the german romanticism, and giordano bruno. it is always a joyful experience to come upon kindred thoughts. i also realized that much had already been conceived and formulated before and that it frequently is thought and formulated again. in the case of tieck it was a poem — ... alles, alles ist verbunden - [everything, everything is connected], what aroused my interest in german romanticism35. in bruno i read: “here, then, the way all things are in the universe and the universe is in all things, we in it, it in us, and everything converges into a perfect unity”. now i will read more of bruno — although perhaps it suffices with this single sentence36. so, i wrote in the 1970s: every thing is all ways significant for all which, in turn, is related to the mantra that i wrote and published in kathmandu:

to be all ways to be (a text whose words are interchangeable)37. i found something similar in leonardo da vinci: “as well as a stone that is thrown into the water becomes the centre and the cause of many circles, so the sound that forms in the air expands in circles. so all the bodies that are found in the bright air spread, in circles, and fill with endless pictures of themselves the surrounding area, and, thus, everything is shown in all and all is shown in each of its parts”, a finding which leonardo came up with through precise observation38. i never looked to the philosophers for a system or doctrine, all i wanted from them was impressions, crucial comments. of course i’m still trying to establish relationships, but a set of relationships is far from being a system. i will take great care not to develop a system, it would be like building a prison! in 2001 i published my philosophische bemerkungen [philosophical remarks] 39. first there were the questions: what - why - where from - where to; then came the words that could be called “keywords” or “coordinates”: this - all - to be - ways - here; to these, “field” and “stream” could be added later, and then some pairs of words that have no sense taken independently: one & many, you & me, chance & change, different & identic, yes & no; and finally, what i really find important among all this: this & no thing. on the 3rd of march 1957, in the first years of my artistic career, i wrote down in my notebook: “art is the philosophical observation in figurative form. i.e., it is also the desire for wisdom (which is not the same as wisdom)”40 . in those years i was teased for maintaining this point of view. if i am asked now what art is, i say that it is a contribution to consciousness or to the processes that lead to it. although there are other definitions41. it is fine that it is so: art is a free field. no progress is possible without freedom. on the 19th of september 1957, i wrote: “at its best, art is an expression of life in unity with the whole. at this stage, life has to also be art.”42 appendix true philosophy is immediate actual. so, any communication of it can go from and to the actuality of it, which is not symbols. so, liberated of thinking with symbols, philosophy is life and actuality.

Here then may be lived a life of the senses so pure, so untouched by any mode of apprehension but their own, that the body may be said to think. Each sense heightened to its most exquisite awareness is in itself total experience.

This is the innocence we have lost, living in one sense at a time to live all the way through.

So there I lie on the plateau, under me the central core of fire from which was thrust this grumbling grinding mass of plutonic rock, over me blue air, and between the fire of the rock and the fire of the sun, scree, soil and water, moss, grass, flower and tree, insect, bird and beast, wind, rain and snow – the total mountain. Slowly I have found my way in. If I had other senses, there are other things I should know. It is nonsense to suppose, when I have perceived the exquisite division of running water, or a flower, that my separate senses can make, that there would be nothing more to perceive were we but endowed with other modes of perception. How could we imagine flavour, or perfume, without the senses of taste and smell? They are completely unimaginable. There must be many exciting properties of matter that we cannot know because we have no way to know them. Yet, with what we have, what wealth! I add to it each time I go to the mountain – the eye sees what it didn’t see before, or sees in a new way what it had already seen. So the ear, the other senses. It is an experience that grows; undistinguished days add their part, and now and then, unpredictable and unforgettable, come the hours when heaven and earth fall away and one sees a new creation. The many details – a stroke here, a stroke there – come for a moment into perfect focus, and one can read at last the word that has been from the beginning.

These moments come unpredictably, yet governed, it would seem, by a law whose working is dimly understood. They come to me most often, as I have indicated, waking out of outdoor sleep, gazing tranced at the running of water and listening to its song, and most of all after hours of steady walking, with the long rhythm of motion sustained until motion is felt, not merely known by the brain, as the ‘still centre’ of being. In some such way I suppose the controlled breathing of the Yogi must operate.

Walking thus, hour after hour, the senses keyed, one walks the flesh transparent. But no metaphor, transparent, or light as air, is adequate.

La acreciento cada vez que voy a la montaña (el ojo ve lo que no había visto antes, o ve de una forma nueva lo que ya había visto). Lo mismo sucede con el oído, con los demás sentidos. Es una experiencia que crece; los días indistintos van añadiendo su parte y, de vez en cuando, de forma impredecible e inolvidable, llegan las horas en las que el cielo y la tierra se evaporan y uno ve una nueva creación. Los numerosos detalles —una pincelada aquí, una pincelada allá— se ven por un momento con perfecta nitidez y uno puede leer por fin la palabra que ha sido desde el principio.

The body is not made negligible, but paramount. Flesh is not annihilated but fulfilled. One is not bodiless, but essential body.

It is therefore when the body is keyed to its highest potential and controlled to a profound harmony deepening into something that resembles trance, that I discover most nearly what it is to be. I have walked out of the body and into the mountain. I am manifestation of its total life, as is the starry saxifrage or the white-winged ptarmigan.

So I have found what I set out to find. I set out on my journey in pure love. It began in childhood, when the stormy violet of a gully on the back of Sgoran Dubh, at which I used to gaze from a shoulder of the Monadhliaths, haunted my dreams. That gully, with its floating, its almost tangible ultramarine, thirled me for life to the mountain. Climbing Cairngorms was then for me a legendary task, which heroes, not men, accomplished. Certainly not children. It was still legendary on the October day, blue, cold and brilliant after heavy snow, when I climbed Creag Dhubh above Loch an Eilein, alone and expectant. I climbed like a child stealing apples, with a fearful look behind. The Cairngorms were forbidden country – this was the nearest I had come to them; I was delectably excited. But how near to them I was coming I could not guess, as I toiled up the last slope and came out above Glen Einich.

Then I gulped the frosty air – I could not contain myself, I jumped up and down, I laughed and shouted. There was the whole plateau, glittering white, within reach of my fingers, an immaculate vision, sun-struck, lifting against a sky of dazzling blue. I drank and drank. I have not yet done drinking that draught. From that hour I belonged to the Cairngorms, though – for several reasons – it was a number of years until I climbed them.

So my journey into an experience began.

It was a journey always for fun, with no motive beyond that I wanted it. But at first I was seeking only sensuous gratification – the sensation of height, the sensation of movement, the sensation of speed, the sensation of distance, the sensation of effort, the sensation of ease: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, the pride of life.

I was not interested in the mountain for itself, but for its effects upon me, as puss caresses not the man but herself against the man’s trouser leg. But as I grew older, and less self-sufficient, I began to discover the mountain in itself.

Es, por tanto, cuando el cuerpo se abre a su máxima potencialidad y es conducido hacia una profunda armonía, internándose en algo semejante a un trance, cuando descubro de manera más clara lo que es ser. He salido de mi cuerpo y he entrado en la montaña. Soy una manifestación de su vida total, como la saxífraga estrellada o la perdiz de las nieves.

Así he encontrado lo que salí a buscar.

Salí de viaje hacia el puro amor. Un viaje que comenzó en la infancia, cuando el tempestuoso violeta de una torrentera que había en la ladera trasera de Sgorn Dubh, que yo solía admirar desde la cornisa de las Monadhliaths, me perseguía en sueños. Esa torrentera, con su flotante y casi tangible ultramarino, me unió de por vida a la montaña. En aquel momento, escalar las Cairngorms me parecía una tarea legendaria, que lograban los héroes, no los hombres. Desde luego, no los niños ni las niñas. Everything became good to me, its contours, its colours, its waters and rock, flowers and birds.

This process has taken many years, and is not yet complete. Knowing another is endless. And I have discovered that man’s experience of them enlarges rock, flower and bird. The thing to be known grows with the knowing.

I believe that I now understand in some small measure why the Buddhist goes on pilgrimage to a mountain. The journey is itself part of the technique by which the god is sought. It is a journey into Being; for as I penetrate more deeply into the mountain’s life, I penetrate also into my own. For an hour I am beyond desire.

It is not ecstasy, that leap out of the self that makes man like god. I am not out of myself, but in myself. I am. To know Being, this is the final grace accorded from the mountain ●

Something activates in my body and in my guts when, after many years, I go back to one of the villages of my personal imaginary. The village is now desolate, almost ghostly, a place from which birds have fled and where only a few dogs survive by barking to scare death off.

I come into one of the stone houses that is in danger of collapsing, the wooden door is ajar, the hinges creak like magpies. Inexplicably the interior is almost intact. On the wall, a deer head with beautiful antlers welcomes me. A lopsided painting in which a childlike brush outlined some yellow cornfields is still hanging there; the fields are populated with great bustards under a blue sky scattered with clouds and pigeons. Next to it, a moth-eaten wool jacket hangs from a wild boar’s hoof, a surreal coat rack. It smells of wet wood and old pipes. It is a stale, unpleasant smell that I barely recognize.

If I was asked to describe the land of my roots I would look for scents capable of taking the spirit to a happy world that no longer exists: freshly-cut firewood, bonfire smoke, jasmine and lilac flowers, mint, dung of cow, quinces, fog on the freshly-washed clothes that are hanging in the garden... but in my evocations,

Entro en una de las casas de piedra que amenaza ruina, la puerta de madera está entreabierta, crujen los goznes como urracas.

Inexplicablemente el interior apenas ha sido arrasado. Desde la pared, una cabeza de ciervo con hermosas astas me da la bienvenida.

Todavía pende un cuadro ladeado en el que un pincel infantil esbozó unas mieses amarillas pobladas de avutardas bajo el cielo azul sembrado de nubes y palomas. Al lado, una chaqueta de lana apolillada cuelga de una pezuña de jabalí, en un perchero surrealista. Huele a madera mojada y a cañerías. Es un olor añejo, desagradable, que apenas reconozco.

Si tuviera que describir la tierra de mis raíces buscaría aromas capaces de transportar el espíritu a un mundo feliz que ya no existe: leña recién cortada, humo de hoguera, jazmín y lilas, hierbabuena, boñiga de vaca, membrillos, niebla sobre la ropa recién lavada

as soon as they have emerged, those aromas vanish as dust does after crossing a fleeting halo of light.

So I close my eyes, go into the empty streets and take a deep breath of that air now smelling of spring and green grass before it dissipates, to embark on a path of no return through the beloved landscapes that bind my memory to oblivion. I’ll let memories and words of another time flow like a spring.

That smell of humidity of the shady forest in autumn belongs to our lost paradises, and it is strange how the beech forest can fall suddenly silent, while my feet sink into the moss and dry leaves, and my heart cracks with them.

Winter, on the other hand, smells of fireplace and cured beef drying in the kitchen, to benches with worn blankets and crochet cushions. I sit down next to the trivet and it seems I can hear the neighbour talking to my grandfather: “This year only a few snowflakes fell and there haven’t been many frosts either. However, here the ground is still cold and the daffodils will take long to sprout.”

I don’t know if a homeland is that place to which we return with our heart when life is hard on us. I don’t know if my homeland is this region of arid lands and fertile lands, vineyards and cellars dug underground, of vegetable gardens and farmlands of corn, cereal and legume, among which one cereal stands out: the plantations of hops, the green gold that grows with its branches braided over a tutor, three by three, climbing higher and higher in order to thrive.

I walk on dry lands that when rain starts let off a unique smell, petrichor, which produces a passing melancholy. Sunflowers have vanished from the fields a long time ago, replaced by photovoltaic solar panels that, while turning their faces in search for the light like them, do not need water.

I dream of the green commons above, on the mountain, where there are unending fresh, moist meadows. I walk the old paths of transhumance, where nowadays the storks, which no longer migrate south, make a halt. I stop at the hut that still serves as a shelter to the shepherds: the door is closed.

There is no scenery without gaze. But to grasp and understand a landscape, we should do more than looking, we have to put our five senses in it to feel beyond everything.

y tendida en la huerta… Pero en mis evocaciones, nada más aflorar, esos aromas se desvanecen como polvo en un halo de luz fugaz.

Así que cierro los ojos, salgo a la calle vacía y tomo aliento de ese aire que ahora huele a primavera y a hierba verde, antes de que se disipe, para emprender un camino sin retorno a través de los paisajes amados que atan mi memoria al olvido. Como un manantial, dejaré que fluyan recuerdos y palabras de otro tiempo.

Pertenece a los paraísos perdidos ese olor a humedad del bosque umbrío en otoño, y es extraño cómo el hayedo puede callar de pronto, mientras los pies se hunden entre el musgo y las hojas secas, y mi corazón cruje con ellas.

El invierno, en cambio, huele a chimenea y a cecina curada en la cocina, a escaño con mantas gastadas y cojines de ganchillo. Me siento junto a la trébede y parece que escucho al vecino hablando con mi abuelo: “Este año apenas cayeron unos pocos falampos y tampoco ha helado mucho. Pero aquí la tierra sigue siendo fría y los capilotes tardarán en salir”.

Yo no sé si una patria es ese el lugar al que volvemos con el corazón cuando la vida nos achucha. Yo no sé si mi patria está en esta región de tierras áridas y tierras fértiles, de viñas y bodegas excavadas bajo el suelo, de huertos y labrantíos de maíz, cereal y legumbre, entre los que sobresalen las plantaciones de lúpulo, el oro verde que crece con sus ramas trenzadas sobre una guía, de tres en tres, para medrar trepando hacia arriba.

Paseo por tierras secas que cuando empieza a llover desprenden un singular olor, petricor, del que se desprenden melancolías pasajeras. Hace tiempo que los girasoles han desaparecido de los campos, sustituidos por paneles solares fotovoltaicos que, si bien giran como ellos, buscando la luz, no necesitan agua.

Sueño con verdes prados comunales más arriba, en la montaña, donde se suceden las brañas frescas y húmedas. Recorro los antiguos caminos de la trashumancia, en los que ahora se detienen las cigüeñas que ya no emigran al sur. Me paro en la choza que todavía sirve de refugio a los pastores: tiene la puerta cerrada.

No hay paisaje sin mirada. Pero, para aprehender y entender un paisaje, hay que hacer algo más que mirar, hay que poner en él los cinco sentidos, hasta sentir más allá de todo.

When we walk we step on the ground, and yet... how far we are of the earth, and not to mention of the mulch inhabited by earthworms, of the anthills and the tunnels drilled by tiny beings that go quite unnoticed by us.

It is not about seeking the invisible, but about perceiving what is there, but we don’t see: the reality of nature on which the deep roots of our memories sit.

The pilgrims crossing the various counties of this region from east to west, from Tierra de Campos to Galicia, in the wake of the Milky Way, know it very well. Also those coming from north or south. Their tired feet. The pebbles in their pockets. Pilgrims carry them, from their places of origin, to throw them at a dangerous crossroads, and above all to leave one, only one, as an offering, along with the mysterious Cruz de Ferro, in the desolate Foncebadón port.

According to ancient traditions, this stone, bestowed with a soul, guarantees walkers some protection during their journey before heading for one of the most arid and hard parts of the road leading to Finisterre: the one that leads, finally, to the rich and lush lands of El Bierzo.

A stone is a stone, but it is also a document of its own becoming, a testimony to its own existence. I think of the stalactites and stalagmites in the Cave of Valporquero, and of the magical shapes created for centuries by the water in this underground place. I think of the petroglyphs of the Maragatos country, of the massive stones carved with dimples, maze and strange signs hiding in the foothills of the Teleno mountain.

What is at the top exerts an influence on what is below. The different animal and plant species affect the mineral matter of the inhabited ground and vice versa (“... the high mountain shrubland closely depends on the substrate: in limestone areas there are junipers, savin junipers and bearberries, and in the siliceous land, blueberry and heather...”).

Cuando caminamos pisamos el suelo, y sin embargo… qué lejos estamos de la tierra, y no digamos ya del mantillo, del humus habitado por lombrices, de los hormigueros y los túneles horadados por diminutos seres que pasan absolutamente desapercibidos para nosotros.

No se trata de buscar lo invisible, sino de percibir lo que está ahí, pero no vemos: la realidad de la naturaleza sobre la que se asientan las raíces profundas de nuestra memoria.

Lo intuyen de alguna manera los peregrinos que atraviesan las distintas comarcas de esta región de este a oeste, desde Tierra de Campos hasta Galicia, siguiendo la estela de la Vía Láctea. También los que vienen desde el norte o por el sur. Sus pies cansados. Sus piedrecitas en los bolsillos. Los peregrinos las llevan, desde sus lugares de origen, para arrojarlas en alguna encrucijada peligrosa, y sobre todo para dejar una, solo una, como una ofrenda, junto a la enigmática Cruz de Ferro, en el desolado puerto de Foncebadón. Según las antiguas tradiciones, esa piedrecita, dotada de alma, garantiza al caminante cierta protección durante su travesía, antes de enfilar por uno de los tramos más áridos y duros del camino que conduce a Finisterre, el que desemboca, al fin, en las ricas y frondosas tierras del Bierzo.

Una piedra es una piedra, pero también es documento de su propio devenir, testimonio de su propia existencia. Pienso en las estalactitas y estalagmitas de la Cueva de Valporquero, y en las formas mágicas creadas por el agua en este enclave subterráneo durante siglos. Pienso en los petroglifos de País de Maragatos, en las enormes piedras labradas con cazoletas, laberintos y extraños signos que se esconden en las faldas del monte Teleno.

Lo que está arriba influye sobre lo que está debajo. Las distintas especies animales y vegetales actúan sobre la materia mineral del terreno habitado, y viceversa (“…el matorral de

Perhaps the roosters of the Candana and La Vecilla, Valdepiélago, Campohermoso, those that are endemic of this particular area of León (a narrow strip of three kilometers on the banks of the river Curueño), have those feathers — greatly appreciated by anglers — because of the minerals and substances from a unique undersoil...

Yes, perhaps the aquifer and ore richness from these lands (gold, coal, slate, iron, talc, tungsten... but also uranium, antimony, arsenic, zinc, cobalt, copper, manganese, mercury, nickel, lead, fluorite, quartzite, marble...) somehow penetrates, is inoculated into the bodies, into the breath, the roots, the sap, the blood, the language... into everything that grows in them.

Because we are also the earth beneath our feet, the water we drink, the air we inhale; we are chemistry, but also energy, emotion and thought capable of transforming the world. At the same time, as humans we are part of a living world that, more and more, we hardly recognize.

The sun sets slowly under the blossoming almond trees, the breeze causes a fine rain of petals, the river flows happily across the fields, while the freshly cut daffodils, which, in the lands of Babia, are called gritsandanas, faint... everything dissolves into a premonition.

I tell myself I am somewhere else…

Just like a painting, music, or a dream, a text can open living spaces for those who travel and explore its inside.

I’m still looking in my memory for something akin to a suspended time, I dive now in a place of heather hills and crags of rock (the locals named them according to their suggested shapes: three nuns, the crow, the goblin, the giraffe...) where life runs quietly. When I go down to the river, along the road dotted with sheep droppings, I hear women washing clothes on wooden boards. I remember the fields filled with poppies and lavender, the tours up the hill with the never-fulfilled promise of watching wild horses before reaching the waterfall, or the night walks to admire the full moon illuminating the gorges of limestone rock between which the river Torío flows, lighting a place that seems enchanted, into which the waters have been carving, for centuries, huge canyons and deep ravines...

I stop in the middle of a broken roman bridge over the river. I hear the sound of the bells announcing the arrival of the flock with

Quizá los gallos de la Cándana, La Vecilla, Valdepiélago y Campohermoso, esos que solo se dan en esa zona concreta de León (una estrecha franja de tres kilómetros en la ribera del Curueño), tienen esas plumas tan apreciadas por los pescadores a causa de los minerales y sustancias de un subsuelo único…

Sí, quizá la riqueza acuífera y mineral de estas tierras (oro, carbón, pizarra, hierro, talco, wolframio… pero también uranio, antimonio, arsénico, cinc, cobalto, cobre, manganeso, mercurio, níquel, plomo, fluorita, cuarcita, mármol…) de alguna forma penetra, se inocula en los cuerpos, en la respiración, en las raíces, la savia, la sangre, la lengua… de cuanto crece en ellas.

Porque también nosotros somos la tierra que pisamos, el agua que bebemos, el aire que inhalamos; somos química, pero también energía, emoción y pensamiento capaces de transformar el mundo. Eso sí, como humanos nos inscribimos en un mundo vivo que, cada vez más, apenas (re)conocemos.

Atardece lentamente bajo los almendros en flor, la brisa provoca una fina lluvia de pétalos, el río corre alegre atravesando los campos, los narcisos recién cortados, que en las tierras de Babia llaman gritsándanas, se desmayan…

Todo se funde en un presentimiento.

Me digo a mí misma que estoy en otra parte…

Al igual que una pintura, una música, o un sueño, un texto puede abrir espacios habitables por los que transitar y explorar los adentros.

Sigo buscando en mi memoria algo parecido a un tiempo detenido, me sumerjo ahora en un paraje de montes de brezo y peñascos de roca viva (los lugareños los nombran por sus formas sugeridas: las tres monjas, el cuervo, el duende, la jirafa…) donde la vida discurre tranquila. Cuando bajo al río, por el camino sembrado de cagaritas, escucho a las mujeres que lavan la ropa sobre tablas de madera. Recuerdo los campos cuajados de amapolas y de lavanda, las excursiones monte arriba con la promesa nunca cumplida de atisbar caballos salvajes antes de llegar a la gran cascada, o los paseos nocturnos para contemplar la luna llena iluminando las hoces de roca caliza entre las que fluye el Torío,

And a feeling of ancestral nostalgia overtakes me.

The land that I love is dying. Its villages are dying. He who can, leaves it never to return.

And those who stay — we gradually forget.

Also the words that named every thing (action, object, being...) are slowly disappearing from the common language.

The real

The house was huge, brown and gre y. B e h i n d i t l ay a b e a u t i f u l field with some trees. A stream that came out of the farm and was lost in the nearby meadows crossed it. There were no flowers, but there were cows and sheep and dogs. It was a farmers’ house, and everything that happened there was harsh. Animals mooed, bleated and barked. Once upon a time, as Joseph Roth wrote, “everything that grew up, required a long time to grow. And everything that disappeared needed a long time to be forgotten. Everything that had been left traces and, then, one lived off memories, as we now live off the ability to forget quickly and decisively.”3 Actually I hardly know anything about the earth, I say to myself. The truth is that I have no village, orchard or garden. I have been living as a hermit in the inhospitable city for years.

alumbrando un paraje que parece encantado, en el que las aguas han ido labrando, durante siglos, enormes gargantas y profundos desfiladeros…

Me detengo en medio de un puente romano roto sobre el río. Escucho el sonido de los cencerros anunciando la llegada del rebaño con el pastor, que a veces trae un corderito recién nacido en el morral. Cuando llega la noche, cansada de corretear por los prados, me acurruco en la cama con la ventana abierta, amecida por el rumoroso sonido del agua unos metros más allá, por el cri-cri de los grillos, el croar de las ranas y la respiración de una lechuza.

Y me invade una sensación de nostalgia ancestral.

La tierra que yo amo se muere. Sus pueblos se mueren. El que puede se va para no volver. Y los que nos quedamos, poco a poco olvidamos.

También las palabras que nombraban cada cosa (acción, objeto, ser…) van desapareciendo de la lengua común.

Lo real

“La casa era enorme, de color pardo y gris. Detrás de ella se extendía un hermoso prado con algunos árboles. Lo atravesaba un riachuelo que salía de la finca y se perdía en los prados cercanos. No había flores, pero había vacas y ovejas y perros. Era una casa de labradores, y todo lo que allí sucedía era áspero.

Los animales mugían, balaban y ladraban. Su presencia y su comportamiento eran importantes en l a v i d a c o t i d i a n a ” 2.

Antaño, como escribió Joseph Roth3, "todo cuanto crecía necesitaba mucho tiempo para crecer, y también era necesario mucho tiempo para olvidar todo lo que desaparecía. Pero todo lo que había existido dejaba sus huellas y en aquel tiempo se vivía de los recuerdos de la misma forma que hoy se vive de la capacidad para olvidar rápida y profundamente".

meeting or giving the alarm... only exist in my imagination.

So what’s the use of setting up our temporary camp here?

And yet I have travelled across this region from east to west and from south to north. In its different counties I have met good people whose hands were as generous or as stingy as the earth that provided them with a livelihood. Thus, I went back home with grapes and wine, with peppers, chestnuts, figs, cherries and leaves… even if, in fact, the most common thing was to go back with nothing but emotional warmth and a pad full of notes about experiences, feelings and overheards words.

I have walked among stones and nettles as far as to the old metal workshop in Valle del Silencio, I have clapped my hands over my ears in the slate quarry of La Cabrera, deranged by the screeching of the saws and the water, and i have also crossed hectares of burnt mountains and fir forests. I have seen how surface mining destroyed territories and landscapes, devastating sceneries one after the other. I have gone down the mines, coal tombs where silical dust inevitably enters the bronchial tree. There, from the damp depths, miners began a battle for the survival of their source of income which clashed against a heap of political nonsense and and made-up interests. And the mines were shut down.

I’ve also been in places where the boundaries between the real and the fantastic are diluted. As when the level of the waters of the swamp falls and the belfry of the submerged village emerges with an unreal appearance.

Or when you wake up in a round palloza in Cantexeira and you feel transported to another world.

I don’t want to forget how the abstract illusion that in the moors is known as “the mirage of sloth” could appear suddenly before our incredulous eyes in the hottest days of the year, at siesta time. I can’t nor want to forget where beauty is, lost in the snow of Los Ancares, nor how I discovered the still intact footprints of the past inhabitants of the mountains (bears, bearded vultures, grouse...) before the chamois start their heat, during the bellowing of the deer in early autumn.

In my emotional part, which has to do with having lived, I keep sensations of the wild

En realidad apenas sé nada de la tierra, me digo. Lo cierto es que no tengo pueblo, ni huerto, ni jardín. Hace años que vivo como una ermitaña en la ciudad inhóspita.

La yedra que trepa por los cipreses, el sonido del agua en el molino, el fuerte olor a vaca en el sendero que conduce a los pastos, el tañido de una campana tocando a concejo o a rebato… solo existen en mi imaginación. ¿Qué sentido tiene acampar aquí?

Sin embargo, durante años recorrí esta región de este a oeste y de sur a norte. En sus distintas comarcas conocí a buenas gentes cuyas manos eran tan generosas, o tan cicateras, como la propia tierra que las proveía de sustento. Así, he vuelto a casa con uvas y vino, con pimientos, puerros, castañas, higos, cerezas y hojas de morera… Aunque lo normal, en realidad, era volver sin nada más que calor emocional y una libreta llena de notas sobre experiencias, sensaciones y frases oídas.

He caminado entre piedras y ortigas hasta llegar a la antigua fragua del Valle del Silencio, me he tapado los oídos en las canteras de pizarra de La Cabrera, trastornada por el chirriar de las sierras y el agua, y también he recorrido hectáreas de montes y pinares calcinados.

He visto cómo las explotaciones a cielo abierto arrasaban territorios y paisajes, sumando escenarios devastados. He bajado a las minas, sepulcros de carbón donde el polvo de sílice se incrusta sin remedio en el árbol bronquial.

Allí, desde las profundidades encharcadas, los mineros iniciaron hace lustros una batalla por la supervivencia de su modo de vida que chocó contra un cúmulo de despropósitos políticos e intereses creados. Y las minas se cerraron.

También he estado en lugares donde las fronteras entre lo real y la entelequia se diluyen. Como cuando baja el nivel de las aguas del pantano y emerge irreal el campanario del pueblo sumergido. O cuando te despiertas en una palloza de Cantexeira o Balboa y te sientes transportada a otro mundo.

No quiero olvidar cómo en los días más calurosos del año, a la hora de la siesta, podía surgir de pronto, ante los ojos incrédulos, esa ilusión abstracta que en el Páramo se conoce como “el espejismo de la galbana”. No puedo ni quiero olvidar dónde está la belleza, perdida entre la nieve en Los Ancares, ni cómo descubrí más lejos aún, y todavía intactas, las huellas

nature when it absorbs you, embraces you, threatens you. They are in contrast with other perceptions of large uninhabited areas, with the silence of immensity.

“Colour is an unprecedented journey to sensory layers within ourselves,” wrote the Galician artist Antón Patiño5 in a long text devoted to Rothko, the painter of the huge meditative and emotional landscapes.

And he continues: “To feel colour is maybe one of human elementary functions, as decisive as breathing or walking. Only when some eye-catching colour startles us do we perceive a special sting. (…) Colour is a ‘wall’, but a wall that reverberates and seems to breathe in an intangible way. (…) It is the ‘relations’ between colours that matter. The music of colours. Luminous radiations that generate rhythms.”

I think about the colours of the cold lands of León (red, black, beige, white, grey, sad lands…) with their variety of browns, ocres, duns, yellows, siennas… I think of the music and the rhythm. In the breathing of the earth.

In the will-o’-wisp of the phosphorus of the bones that are still being buried in mountains and kerbs.

I think that the land still keeps too many secrets of our history. And that, after exhuming those bodies (to cure the wounds of the living),

Y continúa: “Sentir el color forma parte quizás de funciones elementales tan decisivas como respirar o caminar. Solo cuando algún color llamativo nos sobresalta percibimos una punzada especial. (…) El color es un “muro”, pero un muro que reverbera y parece respirar de forma inmaterial. (…) Son las “relaciones” entre colores lo que cuenta. La música de los colores. Radiaciones luminosas que generan ritmos”.

Pienso en los colores de las frías tierras de León (rojas, negras, tostadas, blancas, grises, tristes…) con su gran variedad de marrones, ocres, pardos, amarillos, sienas… Pienso en la música y el ritmo. En la respiración de la tierra.

There is no more solid land than that of common sense... but there are other lands beyond, and what we lose: thoughts, ways of life, a time that passes with a different pace, customs, skills… lies in them. Also words lie in them: those that named all those things that no longer exist, and those that once named what still remains.

In the face of the past, the charm of a new imaginary land emerges, the desire to explore unknown places that perhaps are also nonexisting...

No hay otra tierra firme más que la del sentido común… Pero hay otras tierras, más allá, y en ellas está lo que perdemos: pensamiento, formas de vida, un tiempo con otro transcurrir, costumbres, destrezas… y palabras: las que nombraban todas esas cosas que ya no existen, y las que antaño nombraron lo que aún sigue existiendo.

Frente al pasado emerge el encanto de una nueva tierra imaginaria, el deseo de explorar lugares desconocidos que quizá tampoco existan…
