Old-fashioned methods may be best for making a high-quality cake base, but when decorating Jana happily employs some modern technology. She says decorating is her favourite part of the process, giving her a chance to express her creativity, and specialist software helps generate unique aesthetics for custom orders.

While Jana isn’t making traditional Greek fare as part of her business (yet), she incorporates some of her early cooking experiences into her cake-making philosophy. “Homemade from scratch” is central to her entrepreneurial endeavours.

“You can get store-bought things from anywhere, but it’s hard to come across authentic homemade cakes nowadays. So I think it adds a touch of high quality and takes everyone back to their grandma’s kitchen,” Jana says.

t all started as a kid in the kitchen when Jana Andreou made traditional Greek desserts with her beloved Yiayia. This precious grandmother-granddaughter time planted the seeds for an enduring obsession with baking sweet treats.

In 2021, when she was just 17 and in year 11, Jana’s passion evolved into a business. She called it Keik By Jana – ‘Keik’ being the Greek word for cake and a nod to those treasured days in the kitchen with her Yiayia.

Above: Jana Andreou at her home in Alexandra where she works her cake-making business in around year 12 studies.

“I like the style of buttercream cakes, I feel like it’s a more modern, stylish approach, and I also like working with buttercream way more than fondant.”

The finished cakes end up at all sorts of celebrations outside of Mother’s Day – birthdays, weddings, christenings, and Christmas parties. The batches of cupcakes and cookies also make various occasions that little bit sweeter, including hen’s nights, new-arrival congratulations, Valentine’s Day, and thank-yous. And during summer, Jana makes appearances at the Eildon Market studio and cake shop in Melbourne. I want to put a Greek twist on it as well – I would have the authentic Greek desserts and then have things like cupcakes inspired by baklava. It’s something I want to experiment with.”

I’ve also done Easter-inspired brownies, like crème egg flavoured brownies. We usually sell out when we do markets –people tend to like them.”

Jana, who is now completing year 12, fits her professional cake-making in around her schoolwork. She tries to get her homework done early in the week and then bakes during the lead-up to the weekend. “At the start, I found it a bit difficult, but slowly I’ve made a routine and stay really organised. I average about two cakes a week, as well as numerous cookies and cupcakes. I usually start baking on Thursday, decorating on Friday, then pick-ups are usually on Saturday or Sunday, so it’s a three-day process. Usually, I work quite late on school nights. Mother’s Day is my most popular period, and last year I was up until 5am baking.”

“Last year my art project was making fake cakes, so I did a mock-up cake. I tend to incorporate cakes into a lot of school as well wherever I can.”

On the flipside, studying hospitality in her final year of high school may come in handy for her business aspirations.

Jana has dreams of having her own cake shop someday and weaving more of her cultural heritage into it. “Eventually I want to open my own In summer, Jana sells delicious donuts at the Eildon Market.

Jana makes cakes for all sorts of occasions, including birthdays, christenings, and Mother’s UnderneathDay.the elaborate decorations she designs, Jana offers a wide range of cake flavours. She says vanilla cakes with lemon or passion fruit curd are among the most popular combinations.

Jana admits that she spends a lot of her time thinking about creating beautiful baked goods, to the extent that it has spilled over into her school assignments.

Melbourne’s Pony Parties owner Janet Chambers and one of her pony party stars, the gorgeous Rainbow Cassie.

Janet has been bringing smiles to faces young and old with her pony companions for more than two decades.

Melbourne’s Pony Parties are all about having fun, safely. Janet says they have full public liability insurance and have never had any accidents. By Emily Friedel There is nothing quite like cute, cuddly ponies to make a special occasion extra special. Melbourne’s Pony Parties has provided this “extra” for over two decades, bringing equine enchantment to people of all Ownerages.Janet Chambers was captivated by horses at a very young age, waking up to watch the milkman’s horse go past in the mornings. She had her first pony party experience on her fourth birthday, and it was certainly memorable. Unfortunately, the reality of having her pony party dreams come true proved overwhelming for Janet. “I was over-excited, and I ended up running to my bedroom and crying. I spent the whole party in my room crying, and all my friends had a really great time,” she says with a Luckily, laugh.Janet’s reaction to her hooved party guests didn’t put her off horses or pony parties. Many years later, after finishing school, she got a job and bought a horse instead of a car. Later still, the pony parties found her again.

Above: Pony parties are not just for kids. People of all ages have been delighted by equine party guests like Wombat (aka Mr Naughty) here.

Right: Janet says her ponies are all very calm and tolerant, and quite happy to be lavished with attention.

“In the 90s, I had a friend who had donkeys, and she’d get asked to take them to nativity scenes and things like that. At the time, we had a lot of farm animals, and she’d ask if we could bring our sheep or pony or whatever. She shifted states, and I kept going. The little pony I had for my kids was great, so people kept asking for me to bring him to parties,” Janet says. “In 2002, I decided to get more serious about it and got some more ponies and a website, and off we went,” she Theseadds.days, Janet has six pony pals who are the star attractions at all sorts of events. All the ponies are exceptionally quiet and tolerant, but each also has a distinct personality. There’s Banjo, who is a bigger pony suitable for bigger kids to ride on; he’s the boss of the herd. Wombat is another team member. He’s a 30-year-old miniature pony who also goes by the name Mr Naughty because of his cheeky nature. “If you’ve got a bucket of soapy water, he’ll tip it out. Or if you’re filling up the trough, he’ll pull the plug Andout.”

then there’s Rainbow Cassie, a pinto Shetland pony with an incredibly long mane that begs to be brushed. “She’s absolutely fantastic. She has a temperament.beautifulShe’s happy to just stand there and let kids brush her all day – she likes being brushed. She’s worth her weight in gold. I think she’s done over a thousand parties in the 13 years I’ve had her,” Janet says.

Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2022 – 17

The ponies are always a hit at kids’ parties, with youngsters relishing the opportunity to get to know them, feed them a bowlful of chopped up

For more information on Melbourne’s Pony Parties go to www.ponyparties.com.au or call Janet on 0417 330 948.

18 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2022 carrots, do their hair, or have a “Animalsride. with kids is always going to be a winner. You get all sorts of reactions, but 99% of them are smitten. Every now and then you get one that’s a little bit hesitant to get on. But we usually take a pony to ride and a pony to brush, and that helps because if they’re a little bit shy about getting on, they’re normally ok to brush and get up close and warm up to it a bit. Then by the time you’re ready to leave, they’re ready to get on!” Janet says. While the ponies are almost universally lavished with love and attention by party-going children, Janet’s grandson was one of the rare exceptions. Last year, Janet put on a pony party for his fourth birthday and says his experience was a little bit like her own as a kid. “He sees the ponies all the time. But for his birthday, he had about 15 friends here, and he was a bit overwhelmed – he didn’t really want to go near the ponies. His friends had a lovely time, though,” Janet says, smiling. For kids who might find a pony party overwhelming like Janet or her grandson, there is also the option of a led trail ride through Janet’s 18-acre property in “WeFlowerdale.callthem Forest Rides. We hand lead them, and any age can have a ride. So we get a lot of two and three year olds going for a little ride through the bush. And there’s lots of wildlife here, which is nice – you might come across some kangaroos or a wombat,” Janet says. While ponies and children might “always be a winner”, the joy of hanging out with horses isn’t restricted to those young in years. “We get quite a few mums who you can tell really wanted to have a pony party and never did, so they got one for their kids. And they’ll kind of hang around while the kids are all off doing something else and quietly come up and ask if they can sit on him [Banjo].”

Rainbow Cassie getting her hair done by adoring fans. Photo by Memories 2 Remember.

The ponies have even brought excitement to people of advanced years, popping into nursing homes for events such as Melbourne Cup Day celebrations. “It’s absolutely priceless because you get the older people who reminisce and start telling you about how they used to ride horses to school. Some of the stories people tell you are amazing,” Janet says. The equine entertainers also seem to enjoy their work –being pampered by adoring fans and fed delicious treats is enough to have them fighting for spots in the float. “I took a photo recently, and it was of two ponies in the float ready to go, but all the others were trying to get in. I think they love it because it’s a bit different, they’ve got nice food in the float, and then when you get there, there’s grass to eat and kids will brush you.” So whether you’re old or young, bipedal or quadrupedal, magnificentlymaned or follicly-challenged, there is a very good chance you’ll have a blast at a pony party. And despite her first pony party experience, Janet’s face lights up when she describes her work. “It’s a lot of fun really.”

It is the product of decades of carefully selecting plants from around the world or breeding them in house, then rigorously testing their mettle to ensure garden worthiness. The stunning display garden showcases the nursery’s offerings, giving visitors a glimpse of what’s possible with considered plantings. Morant started Antique Perennials 21 years ago after noticing the nursery industry could do with some spicing “I’veup. been in the industry for 35 years, and there was a real need for different plants – whatever retail nursery you went to had the same plants, and it became so monotonous. I used to hear that from customers as well. I’ve been collecting plants the whole time I’ve been in the industry, so I had a garden full of rare and unusual plants. I just started propagating those, and they sold like hot cakes. Mike and I were working at another nursery at the time, and we quit our jobs, leased a halfacre in Kinglake and started, and it’s just snowballed from there,” Matt says. Matt and Michael were drawn to the perennials because of their longevity – lasting indefinitely and bringing the yearly reward of blooms. Extended flowering seasons and adaptability add to the attractiveness of this group of plants. As for the grasses at Antique Perennials, they make a perfect complement. “The grasses are essential. You can’t have a perennial garden without some grasses, just to give it some vertical lines and some movement in the wind,” Matt Sincesays. their grows,”that“WeMediterranean.SouthNorthfar-flungspeciesimportedpairfrombeginningshumblepropagatingMatt’sgarden,thehastrackeddownandhundredsofplantandvarietiesfromplaces,includingAmerica,Europe,Africa,andthegrowalotofthingsnooneelseinAustraliaMattsays.

Until recently, this catalogue was only available to other nurseries, landscapers, and garden designers. But Matt and Michael finally opened their doors to everyone in 2020, giving retail customers direct access to their everexpanding collection and specialist knowledge.

“The display garden is great for educational purposes, to walk around with people and explain how it’s done, how old it is, things like planting densities and maintenance. In October it really starts to kick on. Its peak is December through March, so well into autumn, and it’s just a vista of movement and colour,” Matt Seeingadds.the display garden in action is about more than just the plants – it demonstrates how the perennials and grasses can build a haven for other living “There’sthings. this idea that native fauna needs native flora, but it’s not a given. This garden brings in so much native wildlife,” Michael says. Inspiration from the display garden can be translated immediately into gardening action by tapping into the expertise on hand to choose the right plants for any garden conditions. Matt and Michael know all their plants with the familiarity of old friends, and they emphasise that success with perennials is all about finding the right plant for the right place. “Some plants that we grow here in Kinglake struggle a bit because we’ve got higher rainfall and they want more arid conditions, but they do really well just down the hill in Yea. So that’s how tight the climates can be with what you can grow,” Michael says.

Matt adds: “Ralph Bristow is a garden designer who lives 15 minutes north of Mansfield, and his garden looks like ours even though his climate is completely different. It’s all in the plant selection.”

In their quest for “gardenworthy” plants, Matt and Michael have even gone through the painstaking process of breeding their own varieties. “It takes a long time because you have to be ruthless and make sure you get a plant that’s garden-worthy –something that’s going to be good for someone to grow. So, on average, it takes about four years,” Michael says. “We’ve released some great plants, like the Panicum ‘Blue Steel’ and ‘Iron Maiden’ grasses. We recently released the Helenium ‘Julia Holmes’, named after Mike’s wife, and there’s the Agastache ‘Nadine’ named after my wife. Some of the plants we’ve bred are heading overseas to be sold,” Matt Asidesays.from their aesthetic appeal, the right choice of perennials and grasses can build a resilient, lowmaintenance garden capable of withstanding the seasonal extremes breezetheShire.throughoutexperiencedtheMurrindindiWithcarefulselection, coldermonthsareaforbothplantsand

“We were getting calls from the public constantly, so we decided to open the retail side of things,” Matt says. One of the highlights of being able to go straight to the source is the display garden, which gives customers an example of the magic created by combining flowering perennials and “Peoplegrasses. can see plants that are fully grown too, so they’re not buying nursery stock and having to wonder what it will look like when it’s mature,” Michael says.

Matt describes the display garden as a “vista of movement and colour” during the warmer months.

26 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2022 Careful selection of grasses and perennials can not only create a feast for the eyes, it can build a tough garden capable of surviving Murrindindi Shire’s seasonal extremes. 1052 Whittlesea-Kinglake Rd Kinglake West (opposite primary school) Ph/Fax 03 5786 5031 Mobile 0408 199 www.ferns.com.ausales@fernacres.com.au244 OPEN 7 days a week 9am-5.30pm Group bookings and wholesale enquiries welcome Australia’s largest retail fern nursery set amidst natural bushland. • tree ferns • ground ferns • epiphytic ferns • grass trees • tree carvingsfern • wall baskets • planters and pots craftedindividuallyforyou their caretakers. “All the stuff we grow is from much colder climates than ours, so frost is never a problem. People sometimes don’t want plants that die back over winter, but there’s still structure, seed heads, colour and interest in our garden in winter. And in places like Kinglake, you don’t really want to be gardening in winter, so it’s also nice to have that downtime. Then when we see a bit of spring movement, usually in August, we cut it all back to ground level in a day and weed and mulch –maintenance-wise it’s really minimal,” Matt says.

At the other end of the spectrum, Antique Perennials has plenty of plant choices for scorching, dry summers. “In terms of drought tolerance, the display garden is two-and-a-half years old now, and it got five waters in the first two years. I don’t even know if we watered it in, and we planted it in December. I rarely water my garden at home, and the perennials are tougher than you think – they let you know. You might have those 40-degree days where you come home from work and they’re slightly flat, but they’re not dead. They don’t promote fire either, so they’re good for gardens around the house – they can be a bit of a fire break,” Michael says. In line with Matt’s and Michael’s original aim to make nurseries more interesting, the plants available in the retail section of Antique Perennials change weekly throughout the growing season. “We grow about a thousand different lines, but there’s probably only about 200 out there at a time,” Matt says. The ever-changing plant stock is a fitting foreground to the dynamic character of the display garden, with its vibrant diversity of living things and seasonal transformations. These, together with the growers’ know-how, make a trip to Antique Perennials a unique experience. For gardeners who are looking for something different – in terms of both plants and nursery experiences – it’s well worth dropping in. Antique Perennials is located at 3153 Healesville-Kinglake Rd, Kinglake. Below: Reed bees are among our lesser-known native bees, despite being quite common in some areas.

Thebehaviour.public is generally unaware of the vast diversity and incredible importance of insects in ecosystem. There may be a few reasons for this, including the ‘yuk’ factor that some people feel towards insects, and the role of the media in perpetuating stereotypes about ‘creepy crawlies’ and ‘bugs’. Gardeners, farmers and outdoorsy types are

Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2022 – 33

Photo: USGS Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab from Beltsville, Maryland, USA, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons Q&A with Dr Philip Barton Reed bees (bees of the genus Exoneura) are among the lesser-known native bees you may encounter in the Murrindindi Shire. There are around 80 species of reed bees, and like all native wildlife, these unsung heroes make valuable contributions to the ecosystems they inhabit. However, reed bees remain understudied and underappreciated – words that also sadly apply to countless other members of the insect world. A recent paper published in the journal Biological Conservation warns that this lack of knowledge about our insect companions is to the detriment of humankind. The paper, titled ‘Scientists’ warning to humanity on insect extinctions’, outlines how human beings rely on insects, which provide everything from new medical treatments to climate regulation. In short, our survival depends on theirs. The paper also details the many ways in which human activity is causing insect demise, including through habitat loss, pollution, and invasive species impacts. Worryingly, the authors suggest we can’t fully understand the impact of insect extinctions because we don’t know enough about insects in general. To help raise insect awareness, one of the paper’s co-authors, Dr Philip Barton, shares his reed bee knowledge in this Q&A. Dr Barton is an ecologist and entomologist, and a senior lecturer in environmental science at University.FederationHehasworked on native bee studies involving reed bees, and his insights will help you get better acquainted with these sixlegged locals. 1. Why do reed bees have such a low public profile? Reed bees are quite common in some areas, but we don’t know very much about their biology. There are quite a few groups of native bees that are very poorly studied, including reed bees. They are semi-social bees and don’t form large colonies like honeybees. Rather, they may nest as solitary individuals or in small groups in the stems of plants, so can be quite variable in their nesting

Above: A species of native reed bee, most likely Exoneura robusta, on coriander flowers. Photo Emily Friedel.

The Atlas of Living Australia (www.ala.org.au) is a fantastic public resource and provides information about Australia’s species and where they’ve been found. Exoneura have been reported from all over Victoria, and southern Australia in general. A common species is Exoneura robusta. They don’t like drier areas and don’t occur in the desert regions of Australia. Reed bees live in the stems of plants and so can be found a variety of habitats that contain plants that produce ‘canes’ or other stems that can be hollowed out to form brood chambers for the reed bees. Tree fern stems are another suitable habitat.

Left: Insect hotels are one way to support local reed bees. usually very much more informed and interested in insects. There has been a lot of hard work put into raising awareness of native bees, and I think we’re miles ahead of where we were just a few years ago when most people didn’t even know we have native bees!

Above: Reed bees visit flowers of many different plant species, native and exotic, and pollinate some berry crops. Photo Emily Friedel.

2. What are some of the features and behaviours of the Exoneura genus? Reed bees are semi-social and do not form large colonies. The females lay eggs in hollowed-out reeds and canes where they rear their larvae. Reed bees appear to be quite good pollinators and visit a number of different exotic and native plants. One study I was involved in found reed bees visited flowers of 18 different plant species, including crabapple and blackberry crops, and native Acacia, Hakea, Leptospermum and Pultenaea. They have special hairy hind legs for carrying pollen. They don’t store any honey in their nests, and simply collect nectar and pollen to feed their Thereyoung.issome nice information here about reed bees produced for Australian Pollinator Week: rita/au/about/meet-our-mascot-australianpollinatorweek.org.https://www.

3. Where are they found in Victoria and what sorts of habitats do they like to live in?

34 – Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2022

7. Is there anything readers can do to support reed bees? Native gardens and bee hotels are great ways to support native bees. Providing a variety of flowers and nectar sources, as well as water, will encourage native bees and other pollinators (flies, butterflies, beetles) to visit your garden. Bee hotels can be constructed from bamboo or drilled out dowelling or old raspberry canes. Try to find flowering plants that are endemic to your area, and plants that flower at different times of the year will also help to provide a continuous supply of nectar. Gardening Australia has some helpful videos about this. I also encourage readers to take a look at, and get involved in, Australian Pollinator Week. The more we know about our bees and other pollinators the better! This year’s Australian Pollinator Week is 12 to 20 November. au/australianpollinatorweek.org.https://www.

5. Are they important in crop pollination? Reed bees are known to pollinate some crops, especially Rubus berries (black berries, raspberries etc.). These plants also make good homes for reed bees as their canes are perfect for nesting in.

Spaying on farms needs to be done very carefully to avoid spray drift into nearby roadsides or surrounding native vegetation where native bees nest.

You can bring native pollinators into your garden by providing a variety of flowers and nectar sources. Photo John Tann from Sydney, Australia, CC BY 2.0 <https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0>, via Wikimedia Commons

Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2022 – 35

4. What role do they play in native ecosystems? Native bees have co-evolved with Australia’s plants and their flowers and formed quite interesting and important partnerships. Reed bees will pollinate native plants, and also play their small part in food webs.

6. Is much known about the health of Victorian reed bee populations? Are there any major threats to them? Some work by colleagues at the Australian National University has looked at reed bees in the Yarra Valley. We found that bees that nest above ground, like reed bees, seem to be more common when there is forest vegetation nearby. Threats to reed bees therefore include clearing of habitat (forest and woodland). All bees and many native insects in general are also threatened by pesticides and insecticides on farms.

Brenda’s drift boat, “The Maefly” with Kate fishing in the distance.

Above: Drift boating with clients Left: Brenda with her USA-born boat pup “Boo”. By Carol Hopkins Imagine this. It’s a warm, still, sunny day. You are drifting down the Goulburn River in a small but sublimely comfortable boat. The only sounds are the gentle splash of oars, the calls of birds and the tinkle of water rushing over stones in the shallows. Suddenly, you spot a platypus, calmly swimming on the surface. Next, there’s a flash of brilliant blue, as an Azure Kingfisher dives to capture a fish. In between, you take your fly-fishing rod and cast out into the river. After several casts, you get a bite and then enjoy the thrill of reeling in a wild brown trout, which you carefully release from the line and watch swim away. Sound good? Well, this is exactly the kind of experience you can expect when you go out with Brenda Galey on her eighthour Drift Boat Trips, which run between Eildon and Alexandra. Brenda runs her trips from spring to autumn, partly because the rivers are closed to fly fishing in the winter months and partly because Brenda spends the winter working as a flyfishing instructor in Montana and Wyoming in the USA. Brenda Galey is a fly-fishing guide with around 35 years’ experience in the sport. She started her guiding business, Galey MsGuided Fly Fishing in Alexandra in 2016. As the first woman in Australia to solely own and operate this type of business, and the

With low sides, it is very easy for clients to enter and exit the boat – a real advantage for those who are less agile. As part of the experience, Brenda will teach you how to read the river, find the fish, choose the right fly based on the insects that are prevalent at the time, and handle the fish you catch in a humane way. While you don’t have to be an expert with casting, it helps to have some basic knowledge, because Brenda is generally too busy rowing the boat to give detailed instruction. And Brenda stresses that casting is extremely important. “If you can’t cast, you can’t catch fish.” However, for those who are not into fly fishing, Brenda also runs eco-tours where people can simply enjoy a relaxing day on the river bird and wildlife Whilespotting.drift boat trips are her most popular offering, Brenda also runs Walk and Wade Trips on the rivers in the Victorian High Country and three-hour Introduction to Fly Fishing courses, which involve one hour of intensive tuition and two hours of practice on a local river. All trips and tuition adhere closely to the Catch And Release and Keep Fish Wet philosophies. To further protect the welfare of the fish, Brenda only uses barbless, or crushed-barb hooks, rubber nets and heavier rods so that the fish can be reeled in quickly and don’t have to struggle for too long.

Brenda is supremely qualified for her role as a fly-fishing guide and is a member of the Australian Professional Fishing Instructors and Guides Association. As well as a licence to operate a commercial vessel in inland waters, she has internationally recognised qualifications in guiding, casting and even swift water rescue. She also has 4WDriving and first aid certification. While all of these courses have been intensive and demanding, Brenda remembers the swift water rescue course as being “terrifying” and describes it as “learning a thousand ways to die in thirty seconds”.

Brenda’s clients come from all over Victoria, interstate and even overseas and about 40% of them are women. “I really want to encourage women to get into fly fishing,” she says.

The Goulburn River: a beautiful spot for fly fishing. only woman to own and use a drift boat, she is definitely a Originallytrailblazer.from a cattle ranch in Nebraska, USA, and keenly interested in fishing since she was a small child, Brenda had never actually heard of fly fishing until she came to Australia in 1992. Once she learnt about it from a colleague while mapping forests and rivers in the Snowy Mountains, she was hooked. She particularly liked the fact that she could catch and release the fish, and this is now a central philosophy of her business. Her drift boat, “The Maefly”, was custom-made for Brenda in the USA and then shipped to Australia. As Brenda explains, “I wanted a boat that was very robust, easy to row and professionally made because I was taking clients down the river, and I wanted them to be both safe and

Because of her own positive experience with the sport, Brenda is now involved in organisations that are using fly fishing to help people who have been diagnosed with cancer. She is on the committee for a Victorian organisation called Mending Casts, which is the umbrella body for Casting For Recovery – a group focusing on women with breast cancer – and Reel Recovery – a group for men who have any form of cancer. These organisations take participants away for a free, three-day retreat where they are able to experience the therapeutic value of fly fishing along with cancer education, peer support and other enjoyable activities.

Brenda also wants to encourage people to see fly fishing not just as a sport but as a total experience, one that can be enjoyed by all members of the family. “You have a lot of people who are single parents, and it’s a great activity to do with your Brendakids.”isalso passionate about the healing power of fly fishing. She should know, because fly fishing played a significant role in helping her overcome post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following the Black Saturday “Flybushfires.fishing helps because it’s peaceful, it’s mindful. You don’t have a tendency to dwell on things when you are fly fishing. It enables you be present in the moment.”

Brenda volunteers as a “river buddy” with Casting for Recovery and for Project Healing Waters, a USA organisation that helps veterans with disabilities or “It’sPTSD.such an incredible experience to be able to help people. It’s really important to me because I’ve been through trauma, and if I can help one other person it means a lot to me.” To find out more about Galey MsGuided Fly Fishing go to the website www.msguidedff. com.au. The catalogue will feature some older genetics coming back to the fore, including a couple of sons by LT “IDriven.lovethe LT Ranch that does a really good job in the United States,” Ian said. “I still had some of the semen, so I thought I’d give it a go and it has worked really well.”

the 30 bulls on sale, Ian says there is strong stud potential in several of the sires. He’s also investing in the future, earlier this year buying the top-priced bull out of Reiland Angus’ autumn sale, Reiland Ricochet R952. “I found him to be a very complete bull in structure and phenotype,” Ian said. “He’s very well put together with an amazing set of numbers to go with Ianhim.”expects to see his first progeny for sale in a few years. “We’re pretty excited about his prospects,” he added. Ian is confident the industry is in good shape and demand will remain strong. “There is a bit of scare around with foot and mouth disease which would be totally devastating if it came here, but putting that aside, bull sales have been on fire with averages up and high demand. “I don’t think the concern about FMD will affect the bull market this season –the industry is still in a great spot and is really strong.”

This year’s catalogue also features a line-up of exciting bulls sired by US sire Woodhill Blueprint from Wisconsin based stud, Woodhill Farms. Blueprint was their top-selling bull in the 2019 Sale and has produced a really great set of bulls at Riddellvue with volume and good type. The 2021 sale set a new stud record with an average price of $9071, and the upcoming sale will follow that success with more progeny of MOGCK Entice on offer. “We had sons of Entice in the last sale and they sold very well. They are a similar-style bull to the Woodhill Blueprint sons and will be popular,” Ian Amongsaid.

Every bull on sale has been naturally reared. “I don’t like to push my bulls too hard,” Ian said. “I’d rather they grow naturally, and I just top them up a bit to get them to a sale weight with a bit of “Comecondition.October 5, things will be looking pretty good with a great lot of bulls with good temperament that are ready to work.”

The auction starts at Whanregarwen near Alexandra at 1pm and will also be online via AuctionsPlus. For the latest news & sale updates, please visit www.riddellvue.com.au or Riddellvue Angus Facebook & Instagram Page.

Murrindindi Guide – SPRING 2022 – 51

The on-property sale near Alexandra on Wednesday October 5 will feature 30 18-month-old bulls and Stud Principal Ian Bates says buyers can expect a great draft of naturally reared Thisbulls.year’s spring sale has been delayed by a month and Ian believes the deferral will be vindicated by the quality of bulls on offer. “I’m pretty excited about the line-up; it’s a very even lot of bulls,” he says. “We put the sale back a month because it was a tough season and it’s pretty hard to get bulls ready for a spring sale in our district. We came through the winter pretty well, but I thought I’d give myself a month’s grace and give the bulls a bit more time, and it’s going to work. The bulls are looking great now and come sale day they will be even better.”

Riddellvue Angus is dipping into the past, looking to the future, and bringing the very best American genetics to its 2022 Annual Spring Angus Bull Sale.

Ian had previously travelled to the US five times to look at sires. “There are pretty good ranches over there for sourcing cattle. It has been hard since COVID to get there but you can still get advice from people you trust on what US bulls to use that will be good for Australian conditions.”

The Goulburn Valley Suicide Awareness Walk was founded in 2021 by Jacky Gilbee and a committee of dedicated and passionate volunteers who wanted to create a grassroots mental health initiative to help support their community with an opportunity to come together and support others left behind after a suicide. Over 100 people took part last year and we expect to triple that number this year.

Registration for the walk is at 8:30am at Yea Railway Station. Jacky will kick the event off with a talk on how the walk began.

The two amazing guest speakers this year will be Neil from 4 Child Safe, who will speak about the shock of losing a loved one, and Emma from Wellways, who will talk about what’s available to assist us moving forward.

Last year’s speakers were highly commended for both speaking with genuine understanding and empathy about their own experience of suicide of a loved one as well providing information about various new organisations, mental health outreach programs and several support Theagencies.walk begins around 10am after the guest speakers and honour, read by Cindy McLeish, MP. It continues to the 2 Twin Rail Trail Bridges closest to Melba Highway where a 50-metre banner is displayed for all to see, and concludes back at the Railway Park where Rotary will be hosting a sausage sizzle to help fundraise for local community support. It’s a longer but leisurely walk this year and we encourage everyone to bring a buddy along even if that is a doggy buddy who we know bring us so much support and love. Please contact us if you would like to donate, offer sponsorship or volunteer to help out on the day as well as register your participation through our website gvsag.org.au. Also be sure to follow us on Facebook: Goulburn Valley Suicide Awareness Group “GVSAG”. We hope to see lots of you on the second Sunday in September!

ave the date, readers! Coming up soon on the Sunday 11 September will be the annual Goulburn Valley Suicide Awareness Walk. The moto of this year’s walk is ‘Pause, Reflect and Remember’. Our participants walk to honour the memory of those friends and family members who we have lost to suicide.

There, he saw astonishingly beautiful and intricate embroidery on the altar frontal (a decorated cloth marking religious seasons and occasions), which had been created in the late 19th century by women from The Embroiderers Guild. “When I saw this altar frontal I was really blown away,” Paul says. “I thought, this is really amazing stuff.”

Paul Dalzell working on his latest piece. by Carol Hopkins While it would be fair to say embroiderythathas generally been considered women’s work, a former Priest in Charge at St John’s Anglican Church in Alexandra, Paul Dalzell, has been defying this tradition for around 40 years. Over this time, he has been using needle and thread to create an impressive collection of embroidered artworks, many reflecting the events and issues of the moment.

Above: an embroidery of Germaine Greer. Left: embroidery of Barack Obama. Learning of his fascination with this embroidered cloth, his girlfriend at the time gave him a set of needles and thread, a piece of linen and a book called “100 Embroidery Stitches” for his birthday. This marked the start of Paul’s engagement with “Itembroidery.gavemepermission to go ahead and have a crack at it,” Paul However, says. although he dabbled in the craft, it wasn’t until 10 years later that Paul got really serious about embroidery. He purchased some postcards featuring the woodcuts of Australian artist Margaret Preston and set about replicating her striking floral images in thread, completing about two a year for many years. As time passed, Paul began expanding his range of subjects. Whenever he saw an image that he liked and thought would make a good embroidery, he added it to an “ideas folder”. Sometimes it was a cartoon in a newspaper, sometimes a photograph in a magazine, and sometimes a card in an art gallery. As a result, Paul’s embroideries came to depict all kinds of subjects, such as religious scenes, landscapes, famous people, artworks, social issues and major Inevents.many ways, Paul’s embroideries are a chronicle of our times. His striking embroidery of Barack Obama was inspired by an image of him produced just before his election as President of the USA. His bushfire embroideries document the fires around Mansfield in 2006 and along the east coast of Australia in 2019. At the time of the “Melbourne Response” to child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, Paul embroidered an image of Cardinal George Pell and gave him a rainbow halo to ironically highlight his conservative stance on Paulhomosexuality.alsolikesto have fun with some of his embroideries, as can be seen in his portrait of Germaine Greer. Using an image from a John Spooner cartoon, Paul then added his own commentary on the famous feminist by using certain colours on her face. The chosen colours were based on the colour theories of German Expressionist painter Alexej von Jawlensky. As Paul explains in his brochure, “She has the feminist colours (green and purple). She has heavenly thoughts (blue). She looked a bit ‘lemon-

A lack of gold thread when replicating artist Gustav Klimt’s painting “The Kiss” led Paul to use gold beads as a substitute. Paul has continued to use coloured beads in his works, and his depiction of the corona virus uses 5,200 beads. Given Paul is a man working in a women’s craft, it’s not surprising to learn he has experienced a little bit of discrimination. He recounts the story of church meetings where, much to Paul’s annoyance, it was considered perfectly acceptable for women to embroider, knit or crochet during the meeting, but when he mischievously took his embroidery to an annual general meeting, he says “there was uproar”.

Paul is happy to help anyone – male or female –who wants to have a go at embroidery. His message is: “Bring a picture that you like, and I’ll show you how to do it. I’ll get you started.” However, he stresses, “It’s important to have an emotional connection with what you are doing, otherwise you’ll never have the patience to spend the time doing it.” If you would like to know more about Paul’s work, or talk to him about a commission, you can contact him by email at dalzoboy@gmail.com.

Paul estimates that each piece takes around 100 hours to complete. Definitely not a craft for the faint-hearted. Unlike most artists, Paul isn’t interested in selling his works because they have a strong, personal significance for “Myhim.embroideries speak to me about things that are important to me and events that have happened to me and that I want to remember,” Paul says. He also notes that they are works that he likes and wants to see on the walls of his home. However, Paul is happy to do commissions and has completed many embroideries for family and friends for special occasions. Amazingly, Paul is entirely self-taught. Although books on embroidery got him started, Paul has used his own initiative to overcome specific challenges in his craft, inventing new stitches and processes as needed.

Marian Rennie Gallery and Little River Wines are very excited to be hosting a solo spring exhibition in the gardens at Acheron to keep the ball rolling . . . so to speak! This exhibition is prior to Sculpture at Acheron 2023 which will be held from Easter to Anzac Day when the garden is in its autumnal glory. The garden will now be open to the public during ‘Losing My Marbles’ exhibition to be enjoyed in its spring glory. The spheres Jeff creates have been an evolution over time. In part influenced by the distinctive handcrafted lampshades that he and his wife Jeanette were known for, and partly by the used horseshoes, that were stored at their property by their son, a farrier by Encouragedtrade.

While Jeff and Jeanette still jointly create art, with some of their lampshade designs becoming large steel sculptures, Jeff continues to handcraft spheres. It has become a passion, and a specialty.

by an artist friend many years ago, Jeff started to make horseshoe balls as a way of utilising the horseshoes and expanding on the design principles and techniques used in creating artistic lampshades.

As an artist, he is instinctive, meticulous and allows design ideas to develop during construction. “I enjoy the creative process of bringing a sphere to life. In their simplest form they start as a metal ball design, and yet finish as a statement. Something with presence and intrigue, yet sometimes whimsical. A focal point to ponder and imagine. Quite magical,” Jeff says. “It starts life as my creative design, but as I try to control the pattern, process and materials, sometimes it defies me. It becomes a battle of wills between me as the creator and it, the sculpture, as it takes control and dictates to me the direction it wants to go.”
